• What is the right way to implement communication between java objects?

  I'm working on an academic project which simulates a rather large queuing procedure in java. The core of the simulator rests within one package where there exist 8 classes, each one implementing a single concept. Every class in the project follows SRP. These classes encapsulate the behavior of the simulator and inter-connect every other class in the project. The problem that has arisen is that most of these 8 classes are, as is logical i think, tightly coupled and each one has to have working knowledge of every other class in this package in order to be able to call methods from it when needed. The application needs only one instance of each class so it might be better to create static fields for each class in a new class and use that to make calls -instead of preserving a reference in each class for every other class in the package (which I'm certain that is incorrect)-, but is this considered a correct design solution? or is there a design pattern maybe that better suits my needs?

• How do I write a Guice Provider that doesn't explicitly create objects?

  Say I have a ClassWithManyDependencies. I want to write a Guice Provider for this class, in order to create a fresh instance of the class several times in my program (another class will depend on this Provider and use it at several points to create new instances). One way to achieve this is by having the Provider depend on all the dependencies of ClassWithManyDependencies. This is quite ugly. Is there a better way to achieve this? Note - I certainly don't want the Provider to depend on the injector. Another option I considered is having ClassWithManyDependencies and ClassWithManyDependenciesProvider extend the same base class, but it's butt ugly.

  I have a table MRU, that has 3 columns. (VALUE varchar(255); TYPE varchar(20); DT_ADD datetime) This is a table simply storing an entry and recording the date time it was recorded. What I wanted to do is: delete the oldest entry whenever I add a new entry that exceeds a certain number. here is my query: delete from MRU where type = 'FILENAME' ORDER BY DT_ADD limit 1; The query returns an error. • Can hash tables really be O(1)

  It seems to be common knowledge that hash tables can achieve O(1) but that has never made sense to me. Can someone please explain it? A. The value is an int smaller than the size of the hash table, so the value is its own hash, so there is no hash table but if there was it would be O(1) and still be inefficient. B. You have to calculate the hash, so the order is O(n) for the size of the data being looked up. The lookup might be O(1) after you do O(n) work, but that still comes out to O(n) in my eyes. And unless you have a perfect hash or a large hash table there are probably several items per bucket so it devolves into a small linear search at some point anyway. I think hash tables are awesome, but I do not get the O(1) designation unless it is just supposed to be theoretical.

• Multiple column Union Query without duplicates

  I'm trying to write a Union Query with multiple columns from two different talbes (duh), but for some reason the second column of the second Select statement isn't showing up in the output. I don't know if that painted the picture properly but here is my code: Select empno, job From EMP Where job = 'MANAGER' Union Select empno, empstate From EMPADDRESS Where empstate = 'NY' Order By empno The output looks like: EMPNO JOB 4600 NY 5300 MANAGER 5300 NY 7566 MANAGER 7698 MANAGER 7782 MANAGER 7782 NY 7934 NY 9873 NY Instead of 5300 and 7782 appearing twice, I thought empstate would appear next to job in the output. For all other empno's I thought the values in the fields would be (null). Am I not understanding Unions correctly, or is this how they are supposed to work? Thanks for any help in advance.

  I've been looking for a blend mode to (well ...) blend two RGB pixels in order to build colors in the samw way that a painter builds them (i.e: subtractive). Here are quick examples of the type of results that I'm expecting: CYAN + MAGENTA = BLUE CYAN + YELLOW = GREEN MAGENTA + YELLOW = RED RED + YELLOW = ORANGE RED + BLUE = PURPLE YELLOW + BLUE = GREEN I'm looking for a formula, like: dest_red = first_red + second_red; dest_green = first_green + second_green; dest_blue = first_blue + second_blue; I've tried with the commonly used 'multiply' formula but it doesn't work; I've tried with custom made formulas but I'm still not able to 'crack' how it should work.   Hello, I am using nHibernate for db persistence. I have a one-to-many relationship defined between 2 tables. When I query and try to get data, I am getting the correct number of rows from the "many" table, but the rows are duplicates of the first row returned. table1 (one), table2 (many). I create a criteria query to get a certain record from table1. I then expect to get all associated records from table2. ie, table1 holds orders, table2 holds items. I query table1 to get an order which has 4 items. I expect to see each of those 4 items from table2, but all I am seeing is the 1st item repeated 4 times. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening?

  I have a query like below that has groups (COL1) and that group's values (COL2). select col1, col2 from (select 'A' col1, 1 col2 from dual union all select 'A' col1, 2 col2 from dual union all select 'B' col1, 1 col2 from dual union all select 'B' col1, 2 col2 from dual union all select 'C' col1, 1 col2 from dual union all select 'C' col1, 2 col2 from dual ) order by col1, col2; The output of this query looks like: COL1 COL2 ---- ---- A 1 A 2 B 1 B 2 C 1 C 2 What I need is a query that will return an ordered number increasing for each different group (COL1). It seems like there would be a simple way to accomplish this (maybe with analytics) but for some reason it is escaping me. • Optimal diff between object lists in Java

  I have a List of Java objects on my server which is sent to the client through some serialization mechanism. Once in a while the List of objects gets updated on the server, that is, some objects get added, some get deleted and others just change their place in the List. I want to update the List on the client side as well, but send the least possible data. Especially, I don't want to resend Objects which are already available on the client. Is there a library available which will produce some sort of diff from the two lists, so that I can only send the difference and the new Objects accross the wire? I have found several Java implementation of the unix diff command, but this algorithm is unpractical for order changes. ie. [A,B,C] - [C,B,A] could be sent as only place changes [1-3] [3-1], while diff will want to resend the whole A and C objects (as far as I understand).

Since one is integer and the other is string I have a problem. Can I add an edit link to each of the boxes so I don't have to edit the whole page in order to modify one of the boxes? The boxes contain only text, not other templates. Thanks! • jQuery finding 'nth-child' value

  Hi, I have a ul set up as navigation, which I'll be animating on hover. As all the nav items are different widths, I'll be storing their default widths in an Array, so that on hover out, these widths can be passed back in to the animate method. What I need is a way to find what 'nth-child' the element is in order to retrieve the correct width from the array. Something like: var count = $(this).count(); //obviously this isn't right! So that then I can do: $(this).animate({'width':array(count)}, 400); Any suggestions would help me a lot - and if there's a better way to do this kind of thing I'd gladly accept pointers!

If operator<< assumes as a second parameter a pointer to the function that takes and returns ostream &, then please explain my why it is necessary? What would be wrong if the function does not take and return ostream & but it was void instead of ostream &? Also it is interesting why “dec”, “hex” manipulators take effect until I don’t change between them, but user defined manipulators should be always used in order to take effect for each streaming?

  I have a table of names and ages that I want the user to be able to sort. When the page initally loads, sortList lists the rows in order from oldest to youngest, and then secondarily from A to Z. I want the same thing (a SECONDARY alphabetical sort) when the user actually clicks on the age <th>, but sortForce is making the alphabetical sort primary. Is there an alternative? $('#super_results table').tablesorter({ sortForce: [[0,0]], sortList: [[1,1],[0,0]] }); Or am I misunderstanding sortForce? Documentation here.

• Reading in MIPS external file so another file can use it?

  Hey all, I'm working on this final thing for my MIPS project and it's deceptively easy. I need to get a procedure (called feed) and let its main driver program use it by reading it in. I know that I'm supposed to use the call code 14 and .globl sym (I think) in order to feed it into the file and have it read it. I just need a basic tutorial or something, as I CANNOT find it on the Internet or in my book (just lists the call code, real helpful). Here's what I know: I need to use read, but I also need a file descriptor (don't know where to get it). I need to put the buffer in $a1 and the length in $a2. Well, that's about it. If there's any decent tutorial you could whip up or if there is one online that I don't see let me know please :). I just need a push in the right direction, I'm sure it can't be too difficult, just can't find any info on it!

  Hi there, I am implementing a CMS, the case is that the "Web-Editable" is in a different domain thus, I would be able just get the page using HttpRequest in order to copy and show it in the CMS server to make it able to change it (DOM just visual purpose) and save the changes to the CSS and JavaScript folder on the "Web-Editable" using FTP. I am not allow to download all the information included on the "Web-Editable" trough the FTP, and there are other dinamic images as well comming from a private database. The question is, anyone knows how to make a httprequest "cascade" to get all the 1st level information you see when you visit a Web? Thank you in advance, Efrain

• Which NoSQL db to use with C?

  Hello all, I'm working on an application that I'm going to write with C and i am considering to use a nosql db for storing timeseries data with at most 8 or 9 fields. But in every 5 minutes there will huge write operations such as 2-10 million rows and then there will be reads(but performance is not as crucial in read as in the write operation). I'm considering to use a NoSQL db here in order to store the data but couldn't decide on which one to use. Couchdb seems to have a stable driver called pillowtalk for C; but Mongo's driver doesn't look as promising as pillowtalk. I'm also open to other suggestions. What is your recommendation?
