• Web Platform Installer bundles for Visual Studio 2010 SP1 - and how you can build your own WebPI bundles

  Visual Studio SP1 is  now available via the Web Platform Installer, which means you've got three options: Download the 1.5 GB ISO image Run the 750KB Web Installer (which figures out what you need to download) Install via Web PI Note: I covered some tips for installing VS2010 SP1 last week - including some that apply to all of these, such as removing options you don't use prior to installing the service pack to decrease the installation time and download size. Two Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Web PI packages There are actually two WebPI packages for VS2010 SP1. There's the standard Visual Studio 2010 SP1 package [Web PI link], which includes (quoting ScottGu's post): VS2010 2010 SP1 ASP.NET MVC 3 (runtime + tools support) IIS 7.5 Express SQL Server Compact Edition 4.0 (runtime + tools support) Web Deployment 2.0 The notes on that package sum it up pretty well: Looking for the latest everything? Look no further. This will get you Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 and the RTM releases of ASP.NET MVC 3, IIS 7.5 Express, SQL Server Compact 4.0 with tooling, and Web Deploy 2.0. It's the value meal of Microsoft products. Tell your friends! Note: This bundle includes the Visual Studio 2010 SP1 web installer, which will dynamically determine the appropriate service pack components to download and install. This is typically in the range of 200-500 MB and will take 30-60 minutes to install, depending on your machine configuration. There is also a Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Core package [Web PI link], which only includes only the SP without any of the other goodies (MVC3, IIS Express, etc.). If you're doing any web development, I'd highly recommend the main pack since it the other installs are small, simple installs, but if you're working in another space, you might want the core package. Installing via the Web Platform Installer I generally like to go with the Web PI when possible since it simplifies most software installations due to things like: Smart dependency management - installing apps or tools which have software dependencies will automatically figure out which dependencies you don't have and add them to the list (which you can review before install) Simultaneous download and install - if your install includes more than one package, it will automatically pull the dependencies first and begin installing them while downloading the others Lists the latest downloads - no need to search around, as they're all listed based on a live feed Includes open source applications - a lot of popular open source applications are included as well as Microsoft software and tools No worries about reinstallation - WebPI installations detect what you've got installed, so for instance if you've got MVC 3 installed you don't need to worry about the VS2010 SP1 package install messing anything up In addition to the links I included above, you can install the WebPI from http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx, and if you have Web PI installed you can just tap the Windows key and type "Web Platform" to bring it up in the Start search list. You'll see Visual Studio SP1 listed in the spotlight list as shown below. That's the standard package, which includes MVC 3 / IIS 7.5 Express / SQL Compact / Web Deploy. If you just want the core install, you can use the search box in the upper right corner, typing in "Visual Studio SP1" as shown. Core Install: Use Web PI or the Visual Studio Web Installer? I think the big advantage of using Web PI to install VS 2010 SP1 is that it includes the other new bits. If you're going to install the SP1 core, I don't think there's as much advantage to using Web PI, as the Web PI Core install just downloads the Visual Studio Web Installer anyways. I think Web PI makes it a little easier to find the download, but not a lot. The Visual Studio Web Installer checks dependencies, so there's no big advantage there. If you do happen to hit any problems installing Visual Studio SP1 via Web PI, I'd recommend running the Visual Studio Web Installer, then running the Web PI VS 2010 SP1 package to get all the other goodies. I talked to one person who hit some random snag, recommended that, and it worked out. Custom Web Platform Installer bundles You can create links that will launch the Web Platform Installer with a custom list of tools. You can see an example of this by clicking through on the install button at http://asp.net/downloads (cancelling the installation dialog). You'll see this in the address bar: http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appsxml=&appid=MVC3;ASPNET;NETFramework4;SQLExpress;VWD Notice that the appid querystring parameter includes a semicolon delimited list, and you can make your own custom Web PI links with your own desired app list. I can think of a lot of cases where that would be handy: linking to a recommended software configuration from a software project or product, setting up a recommended / documented / supported install list for a software development team or IT shop, etc. For instance, here's a link that installs just VS2010 SP1 Core and the SQL CE tools: http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appsxml=&appid=VS2010SP1Core;SQLCETools Note: If you've already got all or some of the products installed, the display will reflect that. On my dev box which has the full SP1 package, here's what the above link gives me: Here's another example - on a fresh box I created a link to install MVC 3 and the Web Farm Framework (http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appsxml=&appid=MVC3;WebFarmFramework) and got the following items added to the cart: But where do I get the App ID's? Aha, that's the trick. You can link to a list of cool packages, but you need to know the App ID's to link to them.   I wanted to get some advice on moving a system to "the cloud" ... specifically, I'm looking to move into some of Windows Azure's managed services, as right now I'm managing a VM. Basically, the system operates on some data stored in a github git repository. I'll describe the current architecture: Current system (all hosted on a single server): GitHub - configured with a webhook pointing at ... ASP.NET MVC application - to accept the webhook from git. It pushes a message onto ... Azure service bus Queue - which is drained by ... Windows Service - pulls the message from the queue and ... Fetches the latest data from the git repository (using GitLib2Sharp) onto the local disk and finally ... Operates on the data in git to produce a static HTML website hosted/served by IIS. The system works really well, actually ... but I would like to get out of the business of managing the VM, and move to using some combination of Azure web and worker roles. But because the system relies so heavily on the git repository on the local filesystem, I'm finding it difficult to figure out how to architect in the cloud. I know you can get file system access, so in theory I could just fetch the repository if there's nothing on disk ... but the performance/responsiveness of the system sort of depends on the repository being available and only having to fetch diffs, which is relatively quick. As opposed to periodically having to fetch the entire (somewhat large) git repository if the web or worker role was recycled, or something. So I would love some advice on how you would architect such a system :) Ultimately, the only real requirement is to be able to serve HTML content that's been produced from the contents of a git repository (in a relatively responsive manner, from a publishing perspective) ... please feel free to ask any clarifying questions if there's something I omitted.   Hi, There are plenty similar questions, but maybe responses to this one will save a developer's life :) I want to migrate to Java. The reasons are very clear: all the .NET vacancies are client and windows oriented (Silverlight developer, ASP.NET developer, WPF developer etc.) and none of them are any interest to me. I worked with .NET since it's beginning as our company decided to invest in .NET having C++ stack and all the natual problems, so I was just blindly following and actually enjoyed it as the products were mostly server oriented with mixed C++/C# code. Today I have beforementioned problem - can't find an inspiring job. I'd rather kill myself than start working on a Silverlight or WPF project. Searching Java vacancies shows promising results, however they all require a huge java-related technology stack and experience. The question is is there any chance to find a job quickly and without dramatic salary drop (I know that Java guys are usually better paid, so there must be a kind of a credit) and if not, how must time and effort does it take to migrate (my .NET knowledge mostly includes server-oriented technologies like NHibernate, WCF, threading, sockets, ASP.NET web services, Enterprise Library, NInject etc etc etc, and (still) some C++ leftovers). • Why won't IIS serve my website? - 404 Page Not Found

  Built a brand new server, with a fresh copy of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x86 Edition. Installed the .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0, 3.5, and 4.0 Added the "Domain Controller" and "Application Server" roles. Created a new website, pointed it to a local directory: C:\Inetpub\angryoctopus.net\ Added the appropriate headers: angryoctopus.net, www.angryoctopus.net, TCP port 80, all IPs Moved the website content into the local directory. Configured the default document in IIS: Default.aspx Enabled ASP.NET for this website, and set it to the correct version: 2.0.50727 Configured the zone angryoctopus.net in DNS. Tested DNS lookup here to ensure DNS was functional. Opened website in VS 2008 and re-built (and debugged) to ensure the content was functional. I can clearly see that IIS is responding normally, by browsing directly to my server's IP address. Since this does not use the angryoctopus HTTP header, the default website is displayed instead: the "Under Construction" page. And yet, after all of this, angryoctopus.net still returns 404. Does anybody know what could be wrong? What troubleshooting steps have I forgotten? Is there a command-line diagnostic that might provide more information?

  Last week, I had the opportunity to help implement and integrate a strong password policy into the legacy web application developed using ASP technology. The solution I proposed was to use jQuery to display the password strength meter to help users create strong passwords. One of my colleagues asked if we would have to modify multiple pages and files if the client decided to alter the password policy. The answer is no. Thanks to jQuery, the client-side script and code behind can share the same information. The password policy information is stored in an XML file and the client-side script and code behind are reading from this to perform the password strength validation.

I've read loads of tutorials and some books which explain how you can use attributes to require authorisation (and membership in a role) like this: [Authorize(Roles="Admin")] public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } I've made classes that implement IIdentity and IPrincipal, I create a userPrincipal object once the user has successfully logged in and I add it to a session variable. When the user goes to another page I want it to set the HttpContext.Current.User to the object that I stored in the session, something like this: if (Session["User"] != null) { HttpContext.Current.User = Session["User"] as MyUser; } My question is: Where abouts do I put the code directly above? I tried Application_AuthenticateRequest but it tells me Session state is not available in this context. Many thanks.

  Hello, I am upgrading a project from EntLib 4.1 to EntLib 5. I've skimmed through the Migration Guide, changed all the references and updated all the config files to point to EntLib 5. All worked fine accept Oracle database access. I was originally using t.IsAssignableFrom(typeof(IEnumerable)) to detect if a Property I was traversing supported the IEnumerable Interface. (And thus I could cast the object to it safely) However this code was not evaluating to True when the object is a BindingList<T>. Next I tried to use t.IsSubclassOf(typeof(IEnumerable)) and didn't have any luck either. (Already Working) Once inside this function, given the object the property resides on, and the PropertyInfo related, get the value of the property, cast it to an IEnumerable (assuming it's possible) and then iterate through each child and call ReflectObject(...) on the child with the count variable.

  I want to use @PreAuthorize annotation on service methods with Spring Security. One of requirements is to use role-hierarchy. But by default it is not enabled. I found that in SecurityExpressionRoot class ("the base class for expression root objects") there is a property roleHierarchy. The class actually does use this property for methods like hasRole() and hasAnyRole(). I suppose that if I supply it with my own RoleHierarchy bean I will be able to use @PreAuthorize annotations with hierarchical roles. How can I inject my hierarchy bean into SecurityExpressionRoot?

  When invoking a query on the data service I get this error message inside the XML feed: <m:error> <m:code></m:code> <m:message xml:lang="nl-NL">Internal Server Error. The type 'MyType' is not a complex type or an entity type.</m:message> </m:error> When I use the example described here in the article "How to: Create a Data Service Using the Reflection Provider (WCF Data Services)" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd728281(v=VS.100).aspx it works as expected. I have created the service in a .NET 4.0 web project. My data context class returns a query object that is derived from the LINQExtender (http://linqextender.codeplex.com/). When I execute the query object in a unit test, it works as expected. My entity type is defined as: [DataServiceKey("Id")] public class Accommodation { [UniqueIdentifier] [OriginalFieldName("EntityId")] public string Id { get; set; } [OriginalFieldName("AccoName")] public string Name { get; set; } } (the UniqueIdentifier and OriginalFieldName attributes are used by LINQExtender) Does anybody know if this is a bug in WCF data services or am I doing something wrong?

  I am generating an XML file from a VB.NET app. The document was generating fine before I tried to add nillable elements. I am now testing putting in just one nil element as: <blah xsi:nil="true"></blah> Once this element is in place and I try to view the XML file in IE it is unable to display.   I'm writing a web crawler for a specific site. The application is a VB.Net Windows Forms application that is not using multiple threads - each web request is consecutive. However, after ten successful page retrievals every successive request times out. It seems strange that it always happens after ten consecutive requests. Notes: In the constructor for the class in which this method resides I have the following: ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 100 If I set KeepAlive to true, the timeouts begin after five requests. All the requests are for pages in the same domain. EDIT I added a delay between each web request of between two and seven seconds so that I do not appear to be "hammering" the site or attempting a DOS attack. However, the problem still occurs.

• How to estimate size of data to transfer when using DbCommand.ExecuteXXX?

  I want to show the user detailed progress information when performing potentially lengthy database operations. Specifically, when inserting/updating data that may be on the order of hundreds of KB or MB. Currently, I'm using in-memory DataTables and DataRows which are then synced with the database via TableAdapter.Update calls. This works fine and dandy, but the single call leaves little opportunity to glean any kind of progress info to show to the user. I have no idea how much data is passing through the network to the remote DB or its progress. Basically, all I know is when Update returns and it is assumed complete (barring any errors or exceptions). But this means all I can show is 0% and then a pause and then 100%. I can count the number of rows, even going so far to cound how many are actually Modified or Added, and I could even maybe calculate per DataRow its estimated size based on the datatype of each column, using sizeof for value types like int and checking length for things like strings or byte arrays. With that, I could probably determine, before updating, an estimated total transfer size, but I'm still stuck without any progress info once Update is called on the TableAdapter. Am I stuck just using an indeterminate progress bar or mouse waiting cursor? Would I need to radically change our data access layer to be able to hook into this kind of information? Even if I can't get it down to the precise KB transferred (like a web browser file download progress bar), could I at least know when each DataRow/DataTable finishes or something? How do you best show this kind of progress info using ADO.NET?
