Temp file that exists only in RAM?

I'm trying to write an encrpytion using the OTP method. In keeping with the security theories I need the plain text documents to be stored only in memory and never ever written to a physical drive. The tmpnam command appears to be what I need, but from what I can see it saves the file on the disk and not the RAM. Using C++ is there any (platform independent) method that allows a file to exist only in RAM? I would like to avoid using a RAM disk method if possible. Thanks Edit: Thanks, its more just a learning thing for me, I'm new to encryption and just working through different methods, I don't actually plan on using many of them (esspecially OTP due to doubling the original file size because of the "pad"). If I'm totally honest, I'm a Linux user so ditching Windows wouldn't be too bad, I'm looking into using RAM disks for now as FUSE seems a bit overkill for a "learning" thing.

Java Swing: how to add an image to a JPanel ?

I have a JPanel to which I'd like to add JPEG and PNG images that I generate on the fly. All the examples I've seen so far in the Swing Tutorials, specially in the Swing examples use ImageIcons. I'm generating these images as byte arrays, and they are usually larger than the common icon they use in the examples, at 640x480. Is there any (performance or other) problem in using the ImageIcon class to display an image that size in a JPanel ? What's the usual way of doing it ? How to add an image to a JPanel without using the ImageIcon class ? Edit: A more careful examination of the tutorials and the API shows that you cannot add an ImageIcon directly to a JPanel. Instead, they achieve the same effect by setting the image as an icon of a JLabel. This just doesn't fill right...

Is there a faster alternative to using textures in XNA?

I am writing a map editing program for a 2D game using XNA. To create a Texture2D for all of the tiles that a map requires takes too long. Are there any alternatives to using textures for drawing with XNA? I attempted to create just one texture per tile set instead of a texture for every tile in a tile set, but there is a limit to the size of textures and I could not fit all the tiles of a tile set into one texture. Currently the program contains all the would-be textures in memory as Bitmap objects. Is there a way to simply draw a Bitmap object to the screen in XNA? I have searched but I cannot find any information on this. This approach would avoid having to create textures altogether, however any tinting or effects I would have to do to the bitmap directly. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Is adding indexes to a SQL Server ever a bad idea?

We have a mid-size SQL Server based application that has no indexes defined. Not even on the the identity columns. I suggested to our moderately expensive application consultant that perhaps we might get better performance (particularly as our database grows) by creating some indexes on appropriate fields, and he said: "Indexes will significantly impact other areas of the application and customers should not create them under any circumstances." Anybody ever heard of anything like this? Are there ever circumstances where one should not create any indexes? I can see nothing special about this app - it's got int identity columns, then lots of string columns, bunch of relational tables but nothing special or weird that I can see. Thanks!

ListView adapter data change without ListView being notified

I've written a ListActivity that has a custom list adapter. The list is being updated from a ContentProvider when onCreate is run. I also have a service that gets started when I run the app and it first updates the ContentProvider, then sends a Broadcast that the content has been updated. My ListActivity recieves the broadcast and tries to update my ListView. My problem is, I'm getting intermittent errors about the ListView adapter data changing without the ListView being notified. I call the notifyDataSetChanged() method on my list adapter right after I update it. What it seems like is happening is the list is still in the process of being updated after first call in onCreate when it recieves the broadcast from the service to update, so it tries to update my ListView before it's finished updating from it's first run. Does this make sense? Here is some of my code. Could the assign function for containers possibly overflow?

I ran into this question today and thought I should post it for the community's reference and/or opinions. The standard C++ containers vector, deque, list, and string provide an assign member function. There are two versions; I'm primarily interested in the one accepting an iterator range. The Josuttis book is a little ambiguous with its description. From p. 237... Assigns all elements of the range [beg,end); this is, is replaces all existing elements with copies of the elements of [beg,end). It doesn't say what happens if the size of the assignee container is different from the range being assigned. Does it truncate? Does it automagically expand? Is it undefined behavior?

Building a case for solr

Our product consists of multiple applications, All using Lucene. 2 of the applications I am involved with have Lucene indexes of about 3 GB and 12GB. Another team is building an application, for which they estimate the LUCENE INDEX size to be close to 1 Terabyte. New documents are added to the indexes every 15 days approx. We do not have any apparent performance issues with the current applications. So my question is SHould we be using Solr now? When should one stop using Lucene and graduate to Solr? Any disadvantages/problems for using Solr? The client applications are made in ASP.Net, but I assume they will be able to use a solr server using solrnet

How to interpret trackpad pinch gestures to zoom IKImageBrowserView

I have an IKImageBrowserView that I want to be able to pinch-zoom using a multi-touch trackpad on a recent Mac laptop. The Cocoa Event Handling Guide, in the section Handling Gesture Events says: The magnification accessor method returns a floating-point (CGFloat) value representing a factor of magnification ..and goes on to show code that adjusts the size of the view by multiplying height and width by magnification + 1.0. This doesn't seem to be the right approach for zooming IKImageBrowserView, whose zoomValue property is clamped between 0.0 and 1.0. So, does anyone know how to interpret the event in -[NSResponder magnifyWithEvent:] to zoom IKImageBrowserView?

It works with dd/mm/yyyy format and handles leap years. I'm looking for a more concise regex statement.

What are some tips for troubleshooting builds of complicated software?

Sometimes I want to build Python or GCC from scratch just for fun, but I can't parse the errors I get, or don't understand statements like "libtool link error # XYZ". What are some tricks that unix/systems gurus use to compile software of this size from scratch? Of course I already do things like read config.log (if there is one), google around, and post in newsgroups. I'm looking for things that either make the process go smoother or get me more information about the error to help me understand and fix it. It's a little tough to get this information sometimes, because some compile bugs can be quite obscure. What can I do at that point?

Flex datagrid multiple rows single file

Hi, I have a flex datagrid with 3 columns. The first column contains the image name(unique key). The other two columns have username and size details. I want to split the username into lastname, firstname, address and some other stuff. Can we have multiple rows in the grid for one image? Tried multi-line, it works but we need to keep adding spaces and its cumbersome. Since each row in the flex datagrid is represented by one index in the XMLList which is enumerated, is there a way to have more than one row assigned to one image and shown in the grid? something like this.. aio_write on linux with rtkaio is sometimes long

I'm using async io on linux with rtkaio library. In my tests everything works perfectly, but, in my real application i see that aio_write which is supposed to return very fast, is very slow. It can take more than 100 milis to write a 128KB to a O_DIRECT padded file. Both my test and the application use same I/O size, i check on the same file system (GFS). I added counting and i see that there are about 50% of async io operations that are short (shorter then 2 milis) and 50% that are long (longer than 2 milis). I also checked that the test and the application both use the same rtkaio library. I'm pretty lost, anyone any ideas where should i look? php gdlib angle problem

I'm using php gd lib 5.2.13 and tried to make a picture with imagettftext ($image, $color and $font are defined of course). imagettftext($image, 12, 90, 10, 20, $black, $font, "This.is_a test 123"); //image, font size, angle, x value, y value, color, font, text As you can see I want the angle to be 90°. The problem is that the text is not beeing rotated properly, e.g. the dots are at the top (and not at the bottom) of the text. I read that this is a common issue and has been fixed in php gdlib 5.3, But since I have 5.2.13 running on a webhost (...) is there a solution to rotate it properly with using gdlib 5.2.13? Thanks!

Image coding library

Is there any good library for lossless image encoding/decoding that has compression rate more or less similar to PNG but decoding to raw RGB bitmap data would be much faster than PNG? Also alpha transparency is needed, but not essential because, alpha channel could be taken from separate image. Original problem lies in slowness of reading and decoding PNG files on iPhone using standard libraries. Obvious and the simples solution would have been storing raw RGB bitmap data, but then size of unpacked ipa is too large - 4 times larger than PNG files. So, I am trying to find some compromise solution.

How the kernel gives seg. fault for a scenario like this?

I have a doubt in accessing some invalid data. How will the OS cause segmentation fault for a scenario like this? Suppose a date segment has some 100 bytes. This will be mapped and a page table entry will be created. But the page size is 4K. Consider the data segment is aligned with this page boundary. So at first consider accessing a valid data within the 100 bytes. So now the page table entry is in TLB. Next if you try to access some invalid data between the 100 and 4K, the entry is there in page table and will it be allowed to access the invalid data??? Thanks, Bala

[OpenGL] I'm having an issue to use GLshort for representing Vertex, and Normal.

As my project gets close to optimization stage, I notice that reducing Vertex Metadata could vastly improve the performance of 3D rendering. Eventually, I've dearly searched around and have found following advices from stackoverflow. Using GL_SHORT instead of GL_FLOAT in an OpenGL ES vertex array How do you represent a normal or texture coordinate using GLshorts? Advice on speeding up OpenGL ES 1.1 on the iPhone Simple experiments show that switching from "FLOAT" to "SHORT" for vertex and normal isn't tough, but what troubles me is when you're to scale back verticies to their original size (with glScalef), normals are multiplied by the reciprocal of the scale. Then how do you use "short" for both vertex and normal at the same time? I've been trying this and that for about a full day, but I could only go for "float vertex w/ byte normal" or "short vertex w/ float normal" so far. Your help would be truly appreciated.

Is it possible for a Perl subroutine to force its caller to return?

If I have Perl module like package X; and an object like my $x = X->new (); Inside X.pm, I write an error handler for $x called handle_error, and I call it sub check_size { if ($x->{size} > 1000) { $x->handle_error (); return; } } Is there any way to make handle_error force the return from its caller routine? In other words, in this example, can I make handle_error do return in check_size without actually writing return there?
