  • pointer and reference question (linked lists)

    - by sil3nt
    Hi there, I have the following code struct Node { int accnumber; float balance; Node *next; }; Node *A, *B; int main() { A = NULL; B = NULL; AddNode(A, 123, 99.87); AddNode(B, 789, 52.64); etc… } void AddNode(Node * & listpointer, int a, float b) { // add a new node to the FRONT of the list Node *temp; temp = new Node; temp->accnumber = a; temp->balance = b; temp->next = listpointer; listpointer = temp; } in this here void AddNode(Node * & listpointer, int a, float b) { what does *& listpointer mean exactly.

  • Manipulating and comparing floating points in java

    - by Praneeth
    In Java the floating point arithmetic is not represented precisely. For example following snippet of code float a = 1.2; float b= 3.0; float c = a * b; if(c == 3.6){ System.out.println("c is 3.6"); } else { System.out.println("c is not 3.6"); } actually prints "c is not 3.6". I'm not interested in precision beyond 3 decimals (#.###). How can I deal with this problem to multiply floats and compare them reliably? Thanks much

  • Compare rows between 2 tables

    - by arthur
    I am new to SQL and I need to build a database for a grocery store(not real, just a course assignment) i have two fields from two different tables - supplied price - the price that the store buys from the supplier and price that is given to the customers How can I make a constraint that insures that supplied price is lower then the price that is given to the customers? The relevant tables that I have are: CREATE TABLE Supplied_Products( [Supplier ID] Int NOT NULL Foreign Key References Suppliers, [Product ID] Int NOT NULL Foreign Key References Products, Price Float NOT NULL, CHECK (Price0), Constraint PK_Supplied_Products PRIMARY KEY([Supplier ID] ,[Product ID]) ) CREATE TABLE Products( [Product-ID] Int NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, [Product Name] Varchar(20) NOT NULL, Price Float NOT NULL, [Category-Name] Varchar(20) NOT NULL Foreign Key References Categories, [Weight] Float NOT NULL, [Is Refrigirated] Varchar(1) DEFAULT 'N' CHECK ([Is Refrigirated] in('Y','N')),/* Is Refrigirated can be only Y-yes or N-no*/ CHECK (Price 0) )

  • Mapping an Array to a Single Row

    - by João Bragança
    I have the following classes: public class InventoryItem { private Usage[] usages = new Usage[12]; virtual public Usage[] Usages { get { return usages; }} virtual public string Name{get;set;} } public class Usage { virtual public double Quantity{get;set;} virtual public string SomethingElse{get;set;} } I know that Usages.Length will always be 12. I think it would be best to store it in the DB like so: Name nvarchar(64), Usage_Quantity_0 float, Usage_SomethingElse_0 nvarchar(16), Usage_Quantity_1 float, Usage_SomethingElse_1 nvarchar(16), ... Usage_Quantity_11 float, Usage_SomethingElse_11 nvarchar(16), How can I get this done?

  • Bind texture with pinned mapped memory in CUDA

    - by sjchoi
    I was trying to bind a host memory that was mapped for zero-copy to a texture, but it looks like it isn't possible. Here is a code sample: float* a; float* d_a; cudaSetDeviceFlags(cudaDeviceMapHost); cudaHostAlloc( (void **)&a, bytes, cudaHostAllocMapped); cudaHostGetDevicePointer((void **)&d_a, (void *)a, 0); texture<float, 2, cudaReadModeElementType> tex; cudaBindTexture2D( 0, &tex, d_a, &channelDesc, width, height, pitch); Is it recommended that you used pinned memory and just copy it over to device memory that is bind to texture?

  • How do you make an in-place construction of a struct casted to array compile in Visual C++ 2008?

    - by Irwin1138
    I'm working with quite a big codebase which compiles fine in linux but vc++ 2008 spits errors. The problem code goes like this: Declaration: typedef float vec_t; typedef vec_t vec2_t[2]; The codebase is littered with in-place construction like this one: (vec2_t){0, divs} Or more complex: (vec2_t){ 1/(float)Vid_GetScreenW(), 1/(float)Vid_GetScreenH()} As far as I know, this code constructs a struct, then converts it to an array and passes the address to the function. I personally never used in-place construction like this so I have no clue how to make this one work. I don't maintain the linux build, only the windows one. And I can't get it to compile. Is there some switch, some macro to make vc++ compile it? Maybe there is a similar nifty way to construct those arrays and pass them to the functions in-place that compiles just fine in vc++?

  • Why are there so many floats in the Android API?

    - by Brian
    The default floating point type in Java is the double. If you hard code a constant like 2.5 into your program, Java makes it a double automatically. When you do an operation on floats or ints that could potentially benefit from more precision, the type is 'promoted' to a double. But in the Android API, everything seems to be a float from sound volumes to rectangle coordinates. There's a structure called RectF used in most drawing; the F is for float. It's really a pain for programmers who are casting promoted doubles back to (float) pretty often. Don't we all agree that Java code is messy and verbose enough as it is? Usually math coprocessors and accelerators prefer double in Java because it corresponds to one of the internal types. Is there something about Android's Dalvik VM that prefers floats for some reason? Or are all the floats just a result of perversion in API design?

  • Function for averages of tuples in a dictionary

    - by Billy Mann
    I have a string, dictionary in the form: ('the head', {'exploded': (3.5, 1.0), 'the': (5.0, 1.0), "puppy's": (9.0, 1.0), 'head': (6.0, 1.0)}) Each parentheses is a tuple which corresponds to (score, standard deviation). I'm taking the average of just the first integer in each tuple. I've tried this: def score(string, d): for word in d: (score, std) = d[word] d[word]=float(score),float(std) if word in string: word = string.lower() number = len(string) return sum([v[0] for v in d.values()]) / float(len(d)) if len(string) == 0: return 0 When I run: print score('the head', {'exploded': (3.5, 1.0), 'the': (5.0, 1.0), "puppy's": (9.0, 1.0), 'head': (6.0, 1.0)}) I should get 5.5 but instead I'm getting 5.875. Can't figure out what in my function is not allowing me to get the correct answer.

  • fprintf() within a subprogram

    Im stuck when trying to write to my file within my subprogram. void new_page(float *a, float *b, float *c, int *d){ fprintf(results,"\nPage Totals: %f\t%f\t%f\t%d", *a,*b,*c,*d); } I get a warning saying "Warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in function 'fprinf' [enabled by default]" "error: 'results' undeclared (first use in this function)" in main fprintf works fine, its just when it comes to the subprogram/function it wont work. from my understanding it thinks that results is undeclared, so do i have to pass the name or location of the file to make it work?

  • paintComponent method is not displaying anything on the panel

    - by Captain Gh0st
    I have been trying to debug this for hours. The program is supposed to be a grapher that graphs coordinates, but i cannot get anything to display not even a random line, but if i put a print statement there it works. It is a problem with the paintComponent Method. When I out print statement before g.drawLine then it prints, but it doesn't draw any lines even if i put a random line with coordinates (1,3), (2,4). import java.awt.*; import java.util.*; import javax.swing.*; public abstract class XYGrapher { abstract public Coordinate xyStart(); abstract public double xRange(); abstract public double yRange(); abstract public Coordinate getPoint(int pointNum); public class Paint extends JPanel { public void paintGraph(Graphics g, int xPixel1, int yPixel1, int xPixel2, int yPixel2) { super.paintComponent(g); g.setColor(Color.black); g.drawLine(xPixel1, yPixel1, xPixel2, yPixel2); } public void paintXAxis(Graphics g, int xPixel, int pixelsWide, int pixelsHigh) { super.paintComponent(g); g.setColor(Color.green); g.drawLine(xPixel, 0, xPixel, pixelsHigh); } public void paintYAxis(Graphics g, int yPixel, int pixelsWide, int pixelsHigh) { super.paintComponent(g); g.setColor(Color.green); g.drawLine(0, yPixel, pixelsWide, yPixel); } } public void drawGraph(int xPixelStart, int yPixelStart, int pixelsWide, int pixelsHigh) { JFrame frame = new JFrame(); Paint panel = new Paint(); panel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(pixelsWide, pixelsHigh)); panel.setMinimumSize(new Dimension(pixelsWide, pixelsHigh)); panel.setMaximumSize(new Dimension(pixelsWide, pixelsHigh)); frame.setLocation(frame.getToolkit().getScreenSize().width / 2 - pixelsWide / 2, frame.getToolkit().getScreenSize().height / 2 - pixelsHigh / 2); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setResizable(false); frame.add(panel); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); double xRange = xRange(); double yRange = yRange(); Coordinate xyStart = xyStart(); int xPixel = xPixelStart - (int) (xyStart.getX() * (pixelsWide / xRange)); int yPixel = yPixelStart + (int) ((xyStart.getY() + yRange) * (pixelsHigh / yRange)); System.out.println(xPixel + " " + yPixel); if(yPixel > 0 && (yPixel < pixelsHigh)) { System.out.println("y"); panel.paintYAxis(panel.getGraphics(), yPixel, pixelsWide, pixelsHigh); } if(xPixel > 0 && (xPixel < pixelsHigh)) { System.out.println("x"); panel.paintXAxis(panel.getGraphics(), xPixel, pixelsWide, pixelsHigh); } for(int i = 0; i>=0; i++) { Coordinate point1 = getPoint(i); Coordinate point2 = getPoint(i+1); if(point2 == null) { break; } else { if(point1.drawFrom() && point2.drawTo()) { int xPixel1 = (int) (xPixelStart + (point1.getX() - xyStart.getX()) * (pixelsWide / xRange)); int yPixel1 = (int) (yPixelStart + (xyStart.getY() + yRange-point1.getY()) * (pixelsHigh / yRange)); int xPixel2 = (int) (xPixelStart + (point2.getX() - xyStart.getX()) * (pixelsWide / xRange)); int yPixel2 = (int) (yPixelStart + (xyStart.getY() + yRange - point2.getY()) * (pixelsHigh / yRange)); panel.paintGraph(panel.getGraphics(), xPixel1, yPixel1, xPixel2, yPixel2); } } } frame.pack(); } } This is how i am testing it is supposed to be a square, but nothing shows up. public class GrapherTester extends XYGrapher { public Coordinate xyStart() { return new Coordinate(-2,2); } public double xRange() { return 4; } public double yRange() { return 4; } public Coordinate getPoint(int pointNum) { switch(pointNum) { case 0: return new Coordinate(-1,-1); case 1: return new Coordinate(1,-1); case 2: return new Coordinate(1,1); case 3: return new Coordinate(-1,1); case 4: return new Coordinate(-1,-1); } return null; } public static void main(String[] args) { new GrapherTester().drawGraph(100, 100, 500, 500); } } Coordinate class so if any of you want to run and try it out. That is all you would need. public class Coordinate { float x; float y; boolean drawTo; boolean drawFrom; Coordinate(double x, double y) { this.x = (float) x; this.y = (float) y; drawFrom = true; drawTo = true; } Coordinate(double x, double y, boolean drawFrom, boolean drawTo) { this.x = (float) x; this.y = (float) y; this.drawFrom = drawFrom; this.drawTo = drawTo; } public double getX() { return x; } public double getY() { return y; } public boolean drawTo() { return drawTo; } public boolean drawFrom() { return drawFrom; } }

  • floating constants in C

    - by Daziplqa
    Hi floks, I have a question concerning floating constants in C. In Java, the default type of floating point constants in double, so the following will causes a compilation error in java: float f = 100.0; // we either need to uses type case operator or put f at the end of the number constant. This is because the default floating-point constants are of type double and casting from double to float without type cast operator is an error, so we need either add a type case operator or put f at the end of the number. So, Why in C this doesn't produce an error, Is it because the default floating-point constants are of type float, or because the compiler do an implicit down-cast conversion (that doesn't requires type case operator in C)????

Scan will be inaccurate.\n"); } (C) Nvidia Corp Can somebody please tell me a case where the warning would be printed, and most importantly, why. Thank you very much.

  • Defining a static array into a C or C++ source file.

    - by VansFannel
    Hello. I know this is a question that every programmer should know, but I do not know. Long time no C programming and I've forgotten a lot of things. My question is: I have three huge static arrays defined inside a header file. Someone told me that It's much better to declare them as extern in the header file, and define them in a single C or C++ source file. How can I do that? Here is my header file: #ifndef _TEMPLE_OBJECT_H_ #define _TEMPLE_OBJECT_H_ #define NUM_TEMPLE_OBJECT_VERTEX 10818 static const float TEMPLEVertices[NUM_TEMPLE_OBJECT_VERTEX * 3] = {...}; static const float TEMPLENormals[NUM_TEMPLE_OBJECT_VERTEX * 3] = {...}; static const float TEMPLETexCoords[NUM_TEMPLE_OBJECT_VERTEX * 3] = {...}; #endif If a use a C++ source file, may I need to define a class? Thank you.

  • Class structure for the proposed data and its containers ?

    - by Prix
    First I would like to wish a happy new year to everyone that may read this :) I am having trouble on how to make a container for some data that I am importing into my application, and I am not sure on how to explain this very well and my english is not really a that good so I hope you can bear with my mistake and help me with some guidance. Currently with a foreach I am importing the follow fields from the data I receive: guid, itemid, name, owner(optional, can be null), zoneid, titleid, subid, heading, x, y, z, typeA, typeB, typeC From the above fields I need to store a Waypoint list of all coords a given item has moved to BUT for each guid I have a new list of waypoints. And from the waypoint list the first entry is also my initial item start location which would be my item initial position (if you notice i have a separate list for it which I was not sure would be better or not) not all items have a waypoint list but all items have the first position. So the first idea I came with to store this data was a list with a class with 2 inner classes with their list: public List<ItemList> myList = new List<ItemList>(); public class ItemList { public int guid { get; set; } public int itemid { get; set; } public string name { get; set; } public int titleid { get; set; } public itemType status { get; set; } public class Waypoint { public float posX { get; set; } public float posY { get; set; } public float posZ { get; set; } } public List<Waypoint> waypoint = new List<Waypoint>(); public class Location { public int zone { get; set; } public int subid { get; set; } public int heading { get; set; } public float posX { get; set; } public float posY { get; set; } public float posZ { get; set; } } public List<Location> position = new List<Location>(); } So here is an example of how I would add a new waypoint to a GUID that exists in the list bool itemExists = myList.Exists(item => item.guid == guid && item.itemid == itemid); if (itemExists) { int lastDistance = 3; ItemList.Waypoint nextWaypoint; ItemList myItem = myList.Find(item => item.guid == guid && item.itemid == itemid); if (myItem.waypoint.Count == 0) { nextWaypoint = new ItemList.Waypoint(); nextWaypoint.posX = PosX; nextWaypoint.posY = PosY; nextWaypoint.posZ = PosZ; } else { ItemList.Waypoint lastWaypoint = myItem.waypoint[myItem.waypoint.Count - 1]; if (lastWaypoint != null) { lastDistance = getDistance(x, y, z, lastWaypoint.posX, lastWaypoint.posY, lastWaypoint.posZ); } if (lastDistance > 2) { nextWaypoint = new ItemList.Waypoint(); nextWaypoint.posX = PosX; nextWaypoint.posY = PosY; nextWaypoint.posZ = PosZ; } } myItem.waypoint.Add(nextWaypoint); } Then to register a new item I would take advantage of the itemExist above so I won't register the same GUID again: ItemList newItem = new ItemList(); newItem.guid = guid; newItem.itemid = itemid; newItem.name = name; newItem.status = status; newItem.titleid = titleid; // Item location ItemList.Location itemLocation = new ItemList.Location(); itemLocation.subid = 0; itemLocation.zone= zone; itemLocation.heading = convertHeading(Heading); itemLocation.posX = PosX; itemLocation.posY = PosY; itemLocation.posZ = PosZ; newItem.position.Add(itemLocation); myList.Add(newItem); Could you help me with advices on how my class structure and lists should look like ? Are there better ways to interate with the lists to get lastWaypoint of a GUID or verify wether an item exist or not ? What else would you advise me in general ? PS: If you have any questions or if there is something I missed to post please let me know and I will update it.

  • seeking help with Chrome & Safari not rendering my table stretched to fit its contents...help?

    - by oompa_l
    I have an element on this web page I'm developing where I need my text to conform to the width of an image above it - whose width will always be different - think of captions. I have found numerous references to using a 1px table to force this width sizing behaviour. I am having problems, though with Safari and Chrome "seeing" this instruction - the text ends up as a marginally sized text box sitting behind the image. The problem, as I see it, has to do with the text and images sitting in div's nested within the table. I need the images to sit in a div because of some jquery script I'm using called cycle, which turns a group of images into a slideshow. The problem may have something to do with the script as well. In any case, I have tried a seeming infinite number of combination of floating left and clearing left on all all the divs, changing their positions and widths...nothing works. Anyone have any clues about how to broach this one? EDIT 1: ok, should I be editing my post or responding with answers? here's the url to see the problem I am having - http://friedmanstudios.ca/webdev/test8.html and the code: <div id="content" class="boxes"> <table> <tr> <td > <div id="imageFrame"> <a href="#" class="img" title="_MG_9786_fmt.jpeg"> <img src="images/_MG_9786_fmt.jpeg"/> </a> <a href="#" class="img" title="IMG_5169_fmt.jpeg"> <img src="indesign export/GFA-TEARSHEETS-100526-01-web-images/IMG_5169_fmt.jpeg"/> </a> <a href="#" class="img" title="IMG_5175_fmt.jpeg"> <img src="indesign export/GFA-TEARSHEETS-100526-01-web-images/IMG_5175_fmt.jpeg"/> </a> <a href="#" class="img" title="aerial_fmt.jpeg" width=""> <img src="indesign export/GFA-TEARSHEETS-100526-01-web-images/aerial_fmt.jpeg"/> </a> </div> <div id="cycleCtrl"> <div id="prev" class="pager"><a href="#">< Prev</a> </div> <div id="next" class="pager"><a href="#">Next ></a></div> <div id="pagerNav" class="pager"></div> </div> <div id="descController"> <img src="images/arrow.gif" name="arrow" width="5" height="10" id="arrow" /> <span id="projectName">Toronto Centre for the Arts </span> <br /> <div id="desc"> In the past eight years... </div> </div></td> <td width="90%"><!--push col 1 back--></td> </tr> </table> and the styles: #content { position: absolute; top: 250px; left: 275px; float: left; clear: both; } content table { float: left; width: 1px; } imageFrame { position: relative; float: left; clear: left; width: inherit; } desc { position: relative; clear: left; float: left; } descController { position:relative; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:10px; clear: left; float: left; } descController div { height:0; overflow:hidden; -webkit-transition:all .5s ease; -moz-transition:all .5s ease; -o-transition:all .5s ease; transition:all .5s ease; padding-top:10px; margin-top: 10px; word-spacing: 0em; line-height: 16px; font-size: 12px; position: relative; float: left; clear: left; }

  • Conversion of Single to two UInt16 values in .net

    - by Gio
    In the good old days of C. I could cast a float to an int (assuming 32 bit system), do some bit manipluation ( bitwise and, right shift, ect ), and get the upper and lower 16 bit hex representations of the floating point number, which I could then store in two short values. I'm not seeing an easy way of doing this in C#. System.Convert.ToUInt16 just does a float to int convert (even after I shift right), which leaves a vlaue of 0 if the float is less than 0, which is not the desired effect. //useless leaves me witg a value 0f 0 UIN16 s1 = (UInt16)((System.Convert.ToUInt32(d2) & 0xffff0000) >> 16); //capture the high word UInt16 s2 = (UInt16)(System.Convert.ToUInt32(d2) & 0xffff); //capture the low word A basic cast (UInt32) doesn't work either.

  • Silverlight for Windows Embedded tutorial (step 6)

    - by Valter Minute
    In this tutorial step we will develop a very simple clock application that may be used as a screensaver on our devices and will allow us to discover a new feature of Silverlight for Windows Embedded (transforms) and how to use an “old” feature of Windows CE (timers) inside a Silverlight for Windows Embedded application. Let’s start with some XAML, as usual: <UserControl xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Width="640" Height="480" FontSize="18" x:Name="Clock">   <Canvas x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="#FF000000"> <Grid Height="24" Width="150" Canvas.Left="320" Canvas.Top="234" x:Name="SecondsHand" Background="#FFFF0000"> <TextBlock Text="Seconds" TextWrapping="Wrap" Width="50" HorizontalAlignment="Right" VerticalAlignment="Center" x:Name="SecondsText" Foreground="#FFFFFFFF" TextAlignment="Right" Margin="2,2,2,2"/> </Grid> <Grid Height="24" x:Name="MinutesHand" Width="100" Background="#FF00FF00" Canvas.Left="320" Canvas.Top="234"> <TextBlock HorizontalAlignment="Right" x:Name="MinutesText" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="50" Text="Minutes" TextWrapping="Wrap" Foreground="#FFFFFFFF" TextAlignment="Right" Margin="2,2,2,2"/> </Grid> <Grid Height="24" x:Name="HoursHand" Width="50" Background="#FF0000FF" Canvas.Left="320" Canvas.Top="234"> <TextBlock HorizontalAlignment="Right" x:Name="HoursText" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="50" Text="Hours" TextWrapping="Wrap" Foreground="#FFFFFFFF" TextAlignment="Right" Margin="2,2,2,2"/> </Grid> </Canvas> </UserControl> This XAML file defines three grid panels, one for each hand of our clock (we are implementing an analog clock using one of the most advanced technologies of the digital world… how cool is that?). Inside each hand we put a TextBlock that will be used to display the current hour, minute, second inside the dial (you can’t do that on plain old analog clocks, but it looks nice). As usual we use XAML2CPP to generate the boring part of our code. We declare a class named “Clock” and derives from the TClock template that XAML2CPP has declared for us. class Clock : public TClock<Clock> { ... }; Our WinMain function is more or less the same we used in all the previous samples. It initializes the XAML runtime, create an instance of our class, initialize it and shows it as a dialog: int WINAPI WinMain(HINSTANCE hInstance, HINSTANCE hPrevInstance, LPTSTR lpCmdLine, int nCmdShow) { if (!XamlRuntimeInitialize()) return -1;   HRESULT retcode;   IXRApplicationPtr app; if (FAILED(retcode=GetXRApplicationInstance(&app))) return -1; Clock clock;   if (FAILED(clock.Init(hInstance,app))) return -1;     UINT exitcode;   if (FAILED(clock.GetVisualHost()->StartDialog(&exitcode))) return -1;   return exitcode; } Silverlight for Windows Embedded provides a lot of features to implement our UI, but it does not provide timers. How we can update our clock if we don’t have a timer feature? We just use plain old Windows timers, as we do in “regular” Windows CE applications! To use a timer in WinCE we should declare an id for it: #define IDT_CLOCKUPDATE 0x12341234 We also need an HWND that will be used to receive WM_TIMER messages. Our Silverlight for Windows Embedded page is “hosted” inside a GWES Window and we can retrieve its handle using the GetContainerHWND function of our VisualHost object. Let’s see how this is implemented inside our Clock class’ Init method: HRESULT Init(HINSTANCE hInstance,IXRApplication* app) { HRESULT retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=TClock<Clock>::Init(hInstance,app))) return retcode;   // create the timer user to update the clock HWND clockhwnd;   if (FAILED(GetVisualHost()->GetContainerHWND(&clockhwnd))) return -1;   timer=SetTimer(clockhwnd,IDT_CLOCKUPDATE,1000,NULL); return 0; } We use SetTimer to create a new timer and GWES will send a WM_TIMER to our window every second, giving us a chance to update our clock. That sounds great… but how could we handle the WM_TIMER message if we didn’t implement a window procedure for our window? We have to move a step back and look how a visual host is created. This code is generated by XAML2CPP and is inside xaml2cppbase.h: virtual HRESULT CreateHost(HINSTANCE hInstance,IXRApplication* app) { HRESULT retcode; XRWindowCreateParams wp;   ZeroMemory(&wp, sizeof(XRWindowCreateParams)); InitWindowParms(&wp);   XRXamlSource xamlsrc;   SetXAMLSource(hInstance,&xamlsrc); if (FAILED(retcode=app->CreateHostFromXaml(&xamlsrc, &wp, &vhost))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=vhost->GetRootElement(&root))) return retcode; return S_OK; } As you can see the CreateHostFromXaml function of IXRApplication accepts a structure named XRWindowCreateParams that control how the “plain old” GWES Window is created by the runtime. This structure is initialized inside the InitWindowParm method: // Initializes Windows parameters, can be overridden in the user class to change its appearance virtual void InitWindowParms(XRWindowCreateParams* wp) { wp->Style = WS_OVERLAPPED; wp->pTitle = windowtitle; wp->Left = 0; wp->Top = 0; } This method set up the window style, title and position. But the XRWindowCreateParams contains also other fields and, since the function is declared as virtual, we could initialize them inside our version of InitWindowParms: // add hook procedure to the standard windows creation parms virtual void InitWindowParms(XRWindowCreateParams* wp) { TClock<Clock>::InitWindowParms(wp);   wp->pHookProc=StaticHostHookProc; wp->pvUserParam=this; } This method calls the base class implementation (useful to not having to re-write some code, did I told you that I’m quite lazy?) and then initializes the pHookProc and pvUserParam members of the XRWindowsCreateParams structure. Those members will allow us to install a “hook” procedure that will be called each time the GWES window “hosting” our Silverlight for Windows Embedded UI receives a message. We can declare a hook procedure inside our Clock class: // static hook procedure static BOOL CALLBACK StaticHostHookProc(VOID* pv,HWND hwnd,UINT Msg,WPARAM wParam,LPARAM lParam,LRESULT* pRetVal) { ... } You should notice two things here. First that the function is declared as static. This is required because a non-static function has a “hidden” parameters, that is the “this” pointer of our object. Having an extra parameter is not allowed for the type defined for the pHookProc member of the XRWindowsCreateParams struct and so we should implement our hook procedure as static. But in a static procedure we will not have a this pointer. How could we access the data member of our class? Here’s the second thing to notice. We initialized also the pvUserParam of the XRWindowsCreateParams struct. We set it to our this pointer. This value will be passed as the first parameter of the hook procedure. In this way we can retrieve our this pointer and use it to call a non-static version of our hook procedure: // static hook procedure static BOOL CALLBACK StaticHostHookProc(VOID* pv,HWND hwnd,UINT Msg,WPARAM wParam,LPARAM lParam,LRESULT* pRetVal) { return ((Clock*)pv)->HostHookProc(hwnd,Msg,wParam,lParam,pRetVal); } Inside our non-static hook procedure we will have access to our this pointer and we will be able to update our clock: // hook procedure (handles timers) BOOL HostHookProc(HWND hwnd,UINT Msg,WPARAM wParam,LPARAM lParam,LRESULT* pRetVal) { switch (Msg) { case WM_TIMER: if (wParam==IDT_CLOCKUPDATE) UpdateClock(); *pRetVal=0; return TRUE; } return FALSE; } The UpdateClock member function will update the text inside our TextBlocks and rotate the hands to reflect current time: // udates Hands positions and labels HRESULT UpdateClock() { SYSTEMTIME time; HRESULT retcode;   GetLocalTime(&time);   //updates the text fields TCHAR timebuffer[32];   _itow(time.wSecond,timebuffer,10);   SecondsText->SetText(timebuffer);   _itow(time.wMinute,timebuffer,10);   MinutesText->SetText(timebuffer);   _itow(time.wHour,timebuffer,10);   HoursText->SetText(timebuffer);   if (FAILED(retcode=RotateHand(((float)time.wSecond)*6-90,SecondsHand))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=RotateHand(((float)time.wMinute)*6-90,MinutesHand))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=RotateHand(((float)(time.wHour%12))*30-90,HoursHand))) return retcode;   return S_OK; } The function retrieves current time, convert hours, minutes and seconds to strings and display those strings inside the three TextBlocks that we put inside our clock hands. Then it rotates the hands to position them at the right angle (angles are in degrees and we have to subtract 90 degrees because 0 degrees means horizontal on Silverlight for Windows Embedded and usually a clock 0 is in the top position of the dial. The code of the RotateHand function uses transforms to rotate our clock hands on the screen: // rotates a Hand HRESULT RotateHand(float angle,IXRFrameworkElement* Hand) { HRESULT retcode; IXRRotateTransformPtr rotatetransform; IXRApplicationPtr app;   if (FAILED(retcode=GetXRApplicationInstance(&app))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=app->CreateObject(IID_IXRRotateTransform,&rotatetransform))) return retcode;     if (FAILED(retcode=rotatetransform->SetAngle(angle))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=rotatetransform->SetCenterX(0.0))) return retcode;   float height;   if (FAILED(retcode==Hand->GetActualHeight(&height))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=rotatetransform->SetCenterY(height/2))) return retcode; if (FAILED(retcode=Hand->SetRenderTransform(rotatetransform))) return retcode;   return S_OK; } It creates a IXRotateTransform object, set its rotation angle and origin (the default origin is at the top-left corner of our Grid panel, we move it in the vertical center to keep the hand rotating around a single point in a more “clock like” way. Then we can apply the transform to our UI object using SetRenderTransform. Every UI element (derived from IXRFrameworkElement) can be rotated! And using different subclasses of IXRTransform also moved, scaled, skewed and distorted in many ways. You can also concatenate multiple transforms and apply them at once suing a IXRTransformGroup object. The XAML engine uses vector graphics and object will not look “pixelated” when they are rotated or scaled. As usual you can download the code here: http://cid-9b7b0aefe3514dc5.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/Clock.zip If you read up to (down to?) this point you seem to be interested in Silverlight for Windows Embedded.
