  I'm currently a senior research software engineer at a large company and am being offered a "senior staff engineer" position somewhere else. I am not sure if the new position's title conveys a sideways move or an advancement. So, all other things being roughly equal (salary, domain of expertise, etc.), what is the external difference between these software engineer titles (in general and regardless of any particular company, if possible): senior engineer senior research engineer senior staff engineer member of technical staff principal engineer Edit: Let me elaborate on "member of technical staff" since it's kind of uncommon. I think it's a high title, commonly associated with research. I know that Oracle, VMWare, and the old Bell Labs have these titles. See: Member of Technical Staff . • How to restore GRUB without re-installing the OS?

  A friend of mine has a Packard Bell laptop that came with Windows pre-installed. I installed Ubuntu on it and it works fine, but everytime she tried to boot Windows on it (fortunately rarely) it fails and the computer is unable to boot any OS anymore. Upon boot, the computer stops on a black screen with a GRUB Rescue prompt. Is there any way to restore GRUB without re-installing Ubuntu? (preferably an easy way as I cannot do it for her and she is not extremely computer literate) Also (but less important), is there a way to configure GRUB (or something else) so that Windows won't destroy it on every boot attempt?

• Installer can't find any partition

  I have a ubuntu 11.10 cd which I burned. And when I try to install Ubuntu I come all the way until it tells me to format partitions / choose partitions. And it can't see ANY partition at all. I have Windows 7 at the moment. I really don't know what the problem is, I've been googling it and searching the forums but no luck. I tried to install with WUBI and rebooted it. And when I was in "ubuntu", at the desktop in ubuntu a error came up telling me to choose a partition. I have no clue what the the problem is... My computer is a Packard Bell model ixtreme m5150 and I don't know what motherboard I have unfortunately. I didn't build it. Please help me.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Syntek in-built webcam not detected

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and my inbuilt camera is not detected. I have tried with Cheese and GUVCView, but neither detects the webcam. I have also tried the solution proposed above using the Terminal, with no results. • Kernel Panic while Installing Ubuntu 12.10 from USB Drive

  Good evening, I recently looked into installing Ubuntu alongside my Windows. I was able to mount the iso on a USB drive using Universal USB Installer. I verified it with the MD5sum utility and the hash is correct. When installing, I can get to the screen where I choose the boot order, select the USB drive, and then I get to a screen where Ubuntu seems to be 'loading' (purple background with Ubuntu logo and name in the middle). Then, all of a sudden, I get a "Kernel Panic - Not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt" error message. My specs : Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5850 @ 2.16 GHz / 4 GB of ram / Packard Bell computer from 2007. / Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed. What should I do now ? Thanks for your help.

• Can I get some advice on graphics cards please?

  I know that Steam for linux is on the way and have been seen a lot of games appearing in the Ubuntu Software Centre of late but my system lacks a decent graphics card and was hoping I could get some recommendations. The desktop is a Packard Bell Imedia S1800 (or Imedia D3526 UK) with the following specs; Memory: 3.8 GiB Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5800 @ 3.20GHz × 2 The system lists the graphics as 'unknown', though I think its just an integrated Intel card From what I can see there is a free PCI-E x16 slot. Any advice would be great, thanks!

• Apache server immediately shuts down

  I just installed MySql 5.1.49, Apache 2.2.16 and PHP 5.3.3 on my Vista Home Basic. I followed the instructions in the "Sam's Teach Yourself", adding: LoadModule php5_module C:/php/php5apache2_2.dll PHPIniDir "C:/php/" and AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html I changed the Listening port to 8080 and the domain is localhost. When I start the server it pops open the window for less than a second and then closes. What am I missing? Thanks.

• How can I preserve share paths when moving a share to a new server?

However, in sharepoint there are a lot of links that refer to the old server by name, ie, \\server1\accounts.   Is it possible to have a vb.net program sound the PC's internal speaker? you know the one that produces C's \a BELL I have tried beep(), but this only produces the error sound on the sound card.   Using: COCOS2D + iOS. I want to rotate the game world, may be loading another .tmx file for another dimensions when user want to switch dimension. the effect what I am looking for is something like this:CLICK HERE What I have thought of till now: rotating CCCamera will be mandatory. Question: How will I have the other part of the level in place while the camera rotates/rotating? I can load a CCSprite and rotate it accordingly to the 3rd dimension. phew..!! Question: When the camera and world is rotated, will the player controls work properly.. I think not...? I think a better option would be to checkout with COCOS3D... there I could implement 3d world... right?? Question: Not sure how well 2d dynamics will work there as I want to user Box2d as physics engine.. could anyone provide suggestions? Regards, Sam

  I know there is something different about the environment of the Terminal command-line and the environment in a bash script, but I don't know what that difference is... Here is the example which finally led me to ask this quesiton; it may flush out some of the differences. I am trying to strip leading '0's from a number, with this command. var="000123"; var="${var##+(0)}" ; echo $var When I run this command from the Terminal's command-line, I get: 123 However, when I run it from within a script, it doesn't work; I get: 000123 I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, and tried all the following with the sam results: GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 Konsole 2.4.5 #!/bin/bash #!/bin/sh What is causing this difference? Even if some upgrade will make it work in scripts... I am trying to find out the what and why, so in future, I'll know what to look out for .

• Finding diagonal objects of an object in 3d space

  Using Unity3d, I have a array which is having 8 GameObjects in grid and one object (which is already known) is in center like this where K is already known object. All objects are equidistant from their adjacent objects (even with the diagonal objects) which means (distance between 4 & K) == (distance between K & 3) = (distance between 2 & K) 1 2 3 4 K 5 6 7 8 I want to remove 1,3,6,8 from array (the diagonal objects). How can I check that at runtime? my problem is the order of objects {1-8} is not known so I need to check each object's position with K to see if it is a diagonal object or not. so what check should I put with the GameObjects (K and others) to verify if this object is in diagonal position Regards, Sam
