• What OS would you use for a simple fileserver and why?

  Hey everyone, Im looking to set up a simple fileserver: 5 - 7 clients - Mixed Windows, Linux, Mac OSX - connecting over wireless and wired Serving ~200GB content - Photos, MP3's, ISO's etc What OS would you recommend for this fileserver? • Security Essentials for Windows 8? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Windows 8 and Microsoft Security Essentials Windows 8 does not seem to have the "Security Essentials" Anti-Virus like Windows 7 installed. Also the Download doesn't say Win-8 compatible. And in addition, my Soluto does not recognize any Anti-Virus program installed. Is there a Anti-Virus in Windows 8 installed by default? Or can I continue using Security Essentials? (Please no discussion about the best anti-virus software)

• Semi-Hybrid Triple Channel DDR3

  I have 3 x Corsair 2GB DDR3 1600MHz, and I want to expand it with 3 more DIMMs. Obviously to keep my triple-channel, I'd be best to buy an identical 3 DIMMs kit as I have now, because triple-channel doesn't work with not-identical memory DIMMs, but to what level of difference? Can I have identical spec DIMMs (Corsair DDR3 1600MHz) but just 4GB beside my 2GB ones, and the triple-channel will still be active?

• Could I centralize batch files more efficiently?

  I am new to the world of batch scripting so please forgive what may appear as basic questions. I am learning as I get assigned different jobs and I am a huge proponent of automation where possible. I have several batch files that perform several tasks. Each of these files had their paths hard-coded e.g. c:\temp. d:\data, etc in the batch file. Initially I moved these to a text file I could call from a batch file e.g. for /f "tokens=1,2 delims==" %%R in (config.txt) do ( if %%R==bdata set bdata=%%S if %%R==cdata set cdata=%%S ) The config.txt file contains these values bdata=c:\temp cdata=d:\data I realized that each time I would need to create a new variable, I would need to update the config.txt file as well the config.bat files. I decided I would move all the values to just the config.bat file as follows set bdata=c:\temp set cdata=d:\data I then updated each of the existing batch files to call the variables rather than the hard-coded paths. I also added the following lines of code to each batch file except config.bat. The only additional line added to the config.bat file is @echo off. @echo off setlocal enableextensions enabledelayedexpansion call config.bat I then have another batch file that centralizes calling all the batch files in sequence. The name of this batch file is start.bat. The reason I am using start /wait is because there have been instances of where the delete.bat runs before compress.bat has had an opportunity to finish. start /wait compress.bat start /wait validate.bat start /wait delete.bat Questions Is this the best way to centralize values and if not, what is a better way? Do I need to specify setlocal enableextensions enabledelayedexpansion in all the existing batch files? Do all the batch files have to have @echo off or is it sufficient for just the config.bat file? Is start /wait the best way to call multiple files? Can I pass values from one batch file to another using the said command? All the batch files have different functions e.g. move, delete, etc however use %%a or %%b. Is this okay? For example The validate.bat file has the code for %%a in (%bdata%\*.*) do if "%%~xa" == "" move /Y "%bdata%\%%~xa" "%bdata%\%done%" and the delete.bat file has the code for %%a in (%bdata%\*.*) do if "%%~xa" == ".txt" del "%%a"

• No architecture vs architecture-specific binaries

  From what I understand, the noarch suffix means that it's architecture independent and should work universally. If this is the case, why should I install architecture-specific packages at all? Why not just go straight for the noarch? Are there optimizations in the x86 or x64 binaries that aren't found in the noarch binaries? What's best for high performance applications? • Why does my mail get marked as spam?

  I Have the server "afspraakmanager.be". It matches everything not to be a spam server.(it isn't by the way): it has reverse dns, spf,dkim,... . But hotmail marks it as spam. • KeePass: use a key file or a regular password?

  I'm setting up a KeePass database and it offers the ability to use a key file, which it says is more secure because it can use a longer and more complex password but is easier to break because you only need the key file to open the database. I'll only be using the key file on 2 computers (one desktop and one laptop), wo which is the best option? Note that it's definitely more appealing to use the key file for me because i have a hard time remembering anything close to a random password.

  Hi, I have two servers, one virtual and one physical, running the exact same site on both machines. Both machines are running on ~ 2% CPU load and very much RAM available for usage. Somehow the site, with cache turned off ofcourse, loads in ~ 500ms on the virtual machine (which is a dev-server by the way) but almost 3 full seconds on the physical machine. They're both running Server 2003, IIS6 aswell as asp.net version 2.0 Any ideas where I can start troubleshoot this? Best Regards LP

• How to create a service running a .bat file on Windows 2008 Server?

  I've created the service using sc create myService binpath=myservice.bat But when I start it, it fails with the following error message: [SC] StartService FAILED 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. On Win2k3 I used the srvany.exe from the Resource kit, but there's no resource kit for win2k8. For the time being I've installed the srvany.exe on my machine, but I don't think that's the best way to do it. Thanks!

Benchmark the OS direct on the hardware as an SQL Server. Store SQL Backup databases on the 2TB WD Caviar HDD. Option 2. Configure 2x SSDs at RAID 0. Install Windows Server 2012 directly to the 2TB WD Caviar HDD. Install Hyper-V. Install the SQL Server (Server 2008) as a virtual machine. Store the Virtual Hard Disks on the SSDs. Option 3.   If anyone has had more than a couple of Microsoft tools or products installed (or a local install of the MSDN library) side by side, you might have noticed that opening help (hitting F1) or opening, say, SQL Server Books Online causes the help indexes to be re-indexed - this is usually after installing a new product or tool. This can be a really, really time consuming exercise! Does anyone know a way to prevent or opt out of having combined help indexes? At best, even just preventing the reindexing at all?

• Expose Windows LDAP address book on the internet

  I need to expose Active Directory, or at least the address book functions on the internet for some mail clients and other devices. The standard response is to simply not or vpn in, however VPN isn't an option for us with some of the hardware devices. A number collages expose their setups out to the internet so I'm assuming their has to be a safe way of doing it. Best option I've come up with to install a linux ldap host, then hourly sync over the relevant contact information however that seems like major overkill.
