• Upgrading 8.10 server to LTS

  I'm in a plan to upgrade ubuntu 8.10 vbox vm servers to LTS(obviously 10.04) as 8.10 has no support. As far as I know I'll be executing the following to upgrade: apt-get install update-manager-core do-release-upgrade anybody could tell me how could I upgrade a ubuntu server from alternate iso image(Is the alternate iso image used for desktop editons the same used for servers?)? I heard it's possible to upgrade an LTS directly to another LTS and how could I do this after upgrading 8.10 to 9.04 then directly to 10.04 skipping 9.10? 8.10 servers are hosting many services/applications/databases like apache2, tomcat6, ldap, mysql, cvs... and I'm not sure that all of them work as ever after the upgrade. If there is any precautions that I've to following before upgrading, please anyone let me know(ofcourse backup and I'm not going to take backup as I will be trying this on a copy of vdi/vmdk vms) Thanks!

• Need to set up shared storage for Guest virtual machines that are running on a Xen host

  My environment: I am doing these things at home with the purpose of learning about virtualization techniques. My machine have quad core processor that supports Intel-VT and 8GB RAM. XEN is the virtualization platform. In short, all domUs are LVM based. Mainly I have two questions; I need to have shared storage for these VMs. Something like NFS / NAS / iSCSI etc. However, I don't know which one is the best solution. Therefore, can someone tell me which suits best? Please note that, this shared storage need to be accessed by the other physical machines in the network. How to implement the selected solution for question #1? Any tutorials / guidelines / ebooks will be a great help and highly appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

• Fan very loud in Ubuntu 12.10

  I recently installed 12.10 on my Desktop PC, moving away from Windows 7. For some reason, the fan in my computer is making an enormous amount of noise (it is running at full speed constantly). Under Windows 7, the fan would slow itself down and run at an acceptable noise level. Now, it is nearly unbearable. Checked the processes, and none are taking up a huge load on the CPU. Please help as I really can't endure this noise, and I do not want to go back to Windows 7 on this box. Some specs: - Intel 2.26 duo core - ATI 4870 - 4GB - 650W power supply

• glx not working, optirun works, gnome in fallback mode

  It all started when I installed nvidia's own driver. Uninstalling it and reverting back to nvidia-current didn't solve the problem, so I have been playing with this for a while. Now nvidia-current seems to be functional. It seems glx support is missing, and my intel graphics is not responding. gnome loads only in fallback mode. • Graphic card for parallel programming vs traditional methods

  With a simple search in amazon one can see that the modern approach for parallel programming is to use your graphic card. However I am still a little bit skeptical about it. My last computer has an 8 core CPU which I need is enough for basic all my parallel needs, if I need more I will probably use MPI through a network using my old machines. All in all, Why and/or when should I use CUDA or another method which uses my graphic card instead of traditional methods like pthreads, java threads, boost threads or the new C++ 11 threads? What about using processes?

  Recently, I've been working on the core of my engine, and as I'm moving forward I find myself developing throwaway code to read files and simple data into the engine. This got me thinking about how I should implement a file management system. After a bit of googleing I came across the Unreal Package format, and boy does it look like the perfect one. I think it's good because the way how it allows you to separate different assets into different packages and allow something like a level to reference the different packages. I was just wondering, is this possible with C#? Because the built-in serialization API in .NET does not seem to support any form of this, only reading and writing to a single file.

• How to add a printer in gnome-shell

  I'm using Gnome Shell (although I'm not sure whether the "Printers" app is part of that or just part of Gnome). I go to "Printers" from the overview, click the + button on the bottom left, choose network and then see a message "FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall.". It's not auto detected anything. There's an Address box and a Search by Address tickbox, but neither seem to do anything. I'm frustrated because I know all the details of the printer, but have nowhere to put them in. Automation is supposed to make things easier, no? For example I know the printer is at lpd://10.67.5.3/lp1 but I can't put this in anywhere. Is there a GUI that works, or have I misunderstood how to use it?

• Trouble with Samba Domain

  I'm having a bit of trouble setting up this Samba domain correctly. I'm getting an Access Denied error when trying to add a Windows XP machine to the domain. I'll go through my scenario in detail, but for those of you wanting a TLDR summary it'll be at the bottom of this post. I have HP Proliant server with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed. For this particular environment, I need this server to act as a PDC, file server, and print server. I began by updating and upgrading the packages (of course). Then went to install samba, gnome-desktop, wine, and cpanm. Samba was, of course, for the PDC and file/print services. The GUI was needed because a certain software has to be installed on there that needs a GUI. Wine was needed because the software is Windows-native. And cpanm was for a perl script I have running. For Samba, I went into the smb.conf file and enabled domain logons, changed the workgroup/domain name, the logon script for a per-group basis (netlogon/%g), enabled the netlogon and profiles share, and setup a couple of custom shares for the file service. The printer was added later, and seems to be working just fine. I then restarted the services, and used the net groupmap command to ensure my unix groups were mapped correctly to the Windows groups. After this, I went to a Windows box, and was able to successfully join the domain without a problem. After some fidgeting with the software to get it running on the win boxes from the server (it's a records management system program, which stores it's database files on the server), I went to add another computer to the domain. But now it's saying Access Denied. Before when I had this trouble it was because I forgot to add the group "machines" so Samba could create machine accounts. Thinking this was the case, I manually created the machine account to test this theory. However, it would still give me an Access Denied error. That must mean it has something to do with permissions now, correct? I've been fighting with this server for the past two weeks. If it's not one thing that;s wrong, then it's something else completely different. This would be the third time I've actually reinstalled everything to start over. I'll post snippets of my system settings below. If anything else is needed, just say the word and I'll gather up the info. The unix group 'domadmin' is the Domain Admins group. This frees IT resources to focus more on developing new innovative services for the organization vs. run and maintain. Carrying the cake analogy forward, you need to add all the ingredients in before you bake it. The same is true with a modern cloud. To harness the full power of cloud, you can’t leave out some of the most important ingredients and just layer them on top later. • Single responsibility principle - am I overusing it?

There are three basic tasks which could be carried out - View existing ledger entries in table format. Create new ledger entry using create button. Click on a ledger entry in the table (mentioned in first pointer) and view its details in next page. You could nullify a ledger entry in this page. (There are couple more operation/validations in each page but fore sake of brevity I will limit it to these) So I decided to create three different classes - LedgerLandingPage CreateNewLedgerEntryPage ViewLedgerEntryPage These classes offer the services which could be carried out in those pages and Selenium tests use these classes to bring application to a state where I could make certain assertion. When I was having it reviewed with on of my colleague then he was over whelmed and asked me to make one single class for all. Though I yet feel my design is much clean I am doubtful if I am overusing Single Responsibility principle
