• Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device" successfully

  Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. Whatever is being installed does so without error. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?

  I have a Dell M4400 connected to a PR03X port replicator/docking station. I use the DVI port to connect it to a first Dell 2208WFP monitor and I'm trying to use a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter to connect it to a second Dell 2208WFP monitor. The second monitor, connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter immediately goes into sleep mode and the laptop doesn't detect it. What is really weird is that it did detect it the first time I plugged it in but after I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in it stopped working. I swapped the monitors round and it detected them both but after unplugging the monitor connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI and plugging it in again it stopped working. Both monitors work if plugged in directly to the DVI port. Is there some way to force re-detection? Any ideas?

• Why does eth0 show an IP if I'm booting into runlevel 1?

  I'm having some issues with networking on a new Linux server I'm building. The OS is SLES 11. When booting into runlevel 1, I see that eth0 is showing an IP. Physically, there is a network cable plugged into the card associated with eth1, and then there is a network cable plugged into a QLogic iSCSI card (eth4, not shown). I've been troubleshooting this for awhile, and it seems like eth0 is somehow getting assigned an IP, even though it isn't configured in Linux or even plugged into the network for that matter. • Has anyone had luck getting an external hard drive working with a PCMCIA USB card?

  I would like to know if anyone has had any success in getting and external 2.5" IDE hard drive in an external case (w/USB cable) working when plugged into a PCMCIA USB card. My hard drive doesn't work when plugged into my HT-Link Cardbus/PCMCIA USB 2.0 2-port card (NEC / 32-bit). My MP3 player will work fine when plugged into it. I tried plugging in both of the USB cables that are one one end (Y cable), and it doesn't make a difference. I read the problem may be insufficient power.

• DVI to VGA adapter only working in one output

  I have a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series graphics card which has 2 DVI outputs. I tried to set it up with 2 monitors which both have vga connectors on the end and used 2 dvi to vga adapters like these. http://www.tvcables.co.uk/images/items/vga-to-dvi.jpg For some reason nothing would reach the monitor, it would remain in standby, if it was plugged into the second output. I tried all the different combinations of cables, adapters and the 2 monitors but whichever monitor that was plugged into the second output wouldn't work. I then randomly decided to plug a different monitor into the second output which has a dvi connector on the end so there was no need for an adapter and plugged it in and it worked! Does anyone know why the second output on the graphics card won't work with a dvi to vga adapter (and the first output will)? I'm really confused! Thanks

  TLDR I want toggle between the following usages of a usb-port via the terminal: use like a normal usb-port only supply energy to charge Story I recently got me something like a magna doodle that can save your drawings to pdf, which can be moved to your computer via usb afterwards. Now the thing is that you can't save anything while it's plugged in. Because it's the only way to charge it, it bugs me that I can't find a software solution and laziness I want to keep it plugged in and toggle the connection to the computer only when needed. I noticed that it's charging and usable when it is plugged in and the computer is shut down or suspened. So I guess that there's a way to do it. • Options not available anymore in my Samsung 932bw lcd

  I think a friend messed up something in my monitor. I left him playing a game and when i came back, i noticed that the brightness was very high. I tried to change it but i couldn't, brithness, contrast, color warm and a few other options are marked as "not available" (he probably adjusted the brightness and changed something else too, that it's causing this thing). I updated the monitor driver, the vcard driver, plugged the monitor in other pc (I'm connected through dvi, but in the other pc i plugged through rgb) but nothing fixed it. Is there someway to force reset all the options or something like that to fix this? (I'm running Win7 RC1 but I don't think that it has something to do with it, it was working perfectly until he messed it up, and the other pc where I plugged it, runs winxp and the problem occurs too. And it doens't look like a the monitor is broken, it works like it always did, just these options are marked "not available" now...)

• WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

  My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice.   I have two 1TB Seagate USB (sdc1 and sdd1) drives connected to an old PC running Fedora 11 without an X server running. Since sdc1 and sdd1 change depending on the order in which they are plugged in, I decided to mount them using their UUID instead. These are my fstab entries UUID=d1b28578-451b-4f03-af28-2e8a6d5b7efb /media/Seagate ext3 defaults,rw,auto,users UUID=36bf5df4-934e-42d4-9e25-16a13971509c /media/Projects ext3 defaults,rw,auto,users They work fine, but when I unmount them and unplug the USB drives, they still show up in Nautilus (I'm running nautilus with X11 forwarding to an Ubuntu machine, btw). Now if I remove those entries from fstab, the drives disappear from Computer. If I add the entries back, they show up as an unmounted drive even when the drive is not plugged in. How do I do this so they don't show up when they're not plugged in?

• Unable to read USB External HD after aborted back up

  I have two PC laptops. On one of the two PC's (Win 7) I Aborted a back up and ejected the drive. Now that same pc wants to format the drive. I plugged the drive into the other pc (Win XP) and that one reads the drive and all data stored. Why does one want to format the drive and the other does not? .... My apologies for not being clearer with my original question and thanks for the responses, so; The drive is not a flash stick, its an external WD Hard drive plugged in via the USB. The two tips provided did not resolve the issue. Strangely, the pc with win XP can read the drive but the pc that the HD was plugged into when the backup was aborted still wants to format the drive. • Is it normal for the laptop charger to spark when plugging in?

  All the laptop chargers I had until now sparked whever I plugged them in. This is true for my old charger (the bulkier / rounder Dell model) and the new charger (the flat Dell model) with two different Dell laptops, however until recently I didn't give it much thought. Then, in the last couple of months: I shorted out a conference room and melted the floor a little (the wire caught fire) The second charger (also a Dell original) died, taking the power strip with it I'm wondering: Is it normal for laptop chargers to spark when plugged in? Specifically new, original Dell chargers Is there a "correct" way to plug / unplug chargers? Do I need to first unplug it from the wall and then from the laptop / do I need to first plug it into the wall and then into the laptop? May the problem be caused by the fact that I leave sometimes the charger plugged into the wall without connecting the laptop for longer periods of time (up to a day)? PS. I'm talking about Europe, so 220V and this happens in many places (at home, at my parents, at work, in hotels I trave to, etc)

• Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes w/ Ethernet Unplugged + Wireless Drops (Acer Aspire 5516)

  Ubuntu 12.04-12.10 32/64 freezes or won't boot if the Ethernet cable is unplugged and will not hold a wireless connection. Here is my scenario... Laptop: Acer Aspire 5516 Wireless card: Broadcom BCM4312 Ubuntu 12.04 32/64 Issues Unity 3d won't load without the Ethernet cable plugged in. If I let it load with Ethernet plugged in, it will freeze once I disconnect the cable. Unity 2d will load without the Ethernet cable plugged. In Unity 2d, wireless cannot hold a connection. I can connect to a Wireless network, but when I try to use it (i.e. open a browser), it disconnects. I can reconnect by disabling wireless (uncheck Enable Wireless), re-enable wireless, and reconnect. But, it will disconnect again once I start using it. Ubuntu 12.10 Issues Since 12.10 only gives me the option to load 3d (I assume), I experience the same thing as the first issue in 12.04. Attempted Solutions Enable networking/LAN in BIOS Set LAN first in boot priority in BIOS Remove STA wireless driver (bcmwl-kernel-source) and install b43 low power driver (firmware-b43-lpphy-installer). Remove default Network Manager and install Wicd. So far, I have had no luck with fixing this issue. Does anyone have any further suggestions?

• Internal speakers do not work

  I have a new (from scratch, not update) installation of Ubuntu 12.10 on my notebook, Asus A3Ac (It is based on Intel Centrino - Pentium M with full duplex Intel HDA codec). In older versions of Debian-based systems Intel HDA audio didn't work correctly. Alsamixer display wrong outputs and inputs (more than notebook really have). In clean installations internal speakers were playing, but they didn't mute when headphones was plugged in. There was a solution (propably not the best but working) - edit as root /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add a line "options snd-hda-intel model=z71v position_fix=1". After restart it worked correctly (alsamixer displayed correct devices and internal speakers were muted after I plugged in headphones). It was also working in Ubuntu 12.04. In Ubuntu 12.10 I have another problem. The alsamixer in default (don't have to edit alsa-base.conf) display correct outputs and inputs but internal speakers don't working if the headphones isn't plugged in. I have to manually disable "Auto-Mut" option in alsamixer, then the internal spakers works (but of course they don't mute when the headphones are pluged in). Thanks for any idea how to fix it. I'm not sure if it is a bug or it's caused by a "specific hardware". Tomas

• USB ports causing Wireless and Mobile Phone tethering drop out

  I have a problem with my USB ports and I can't seem to pinpoint the problem. I'm hoping that I can get some idea as to how to troubleshoot my problem. Problem description: I recently bought a USB Wireless Adapter in order to connect my Desktop PC to the WLAN. The dongle keeps dropping off connection regularly on average once a minute. And the connection is slow. What I've tried: I installed a network scanner to determine signal strength. The PC/adapter combo is getting about 70% signal strength. I have a laptop that has an internal Wireless adapter. I moved the laptop near the location of the PC. The signal strength was above 90%. I installed the USB adapter on the laptop. I placed the laptop near the location of the PC. The signal strength was above 80%. And there is no drop out issue. I've isolated the problem to be on the PC. I used internet tethering on my mobile phone in order to test the USB ports. I get the same problem, themobile phone keeps dropping in and out. I plugged the adapter and phone on all USB ports, and it is still dropping out on all ports. I've isolated the problem to be the Motherboard, USB hub. I updated the BIOS, and USB driver. Still dropping out. I noticed that when I used the mobile phone tethering method, the phone (iphone 5) is guarenteed to drop out and does not appear to charge if I jiggle the the 8-pin connector on the base of the phone. If I push the pin tightly on the phone, the phone starts charging, as soon as I let go, it stops and drops out from the PC. This is strange because this doesn't happen when it is plugged to the powerboard. Which means that the 8 pin connector is fine. I'm not sure what the problem is. I assume that it is to do with the USB ports not supplying enough power which in turn causes the devices to intermittently drop out. The reason I say this is because the USB cable works fine when plugged into a powerboard with enough power supplied to the phone. Only when it is plugged into the USB port on the PC, does it drop out. My motherboard is Asus P8z68-v le. My Wireless adapter is the D-link DWA131. I can't seem to find any settings in the BIOS to increase the south bridge voltage so as to supply more power to the USB ports. Although this problem only occurs when I'm trying to hook up to a device supplying internet connection. My USB HDD, Flash drives, and Mouse and Key are working fine! Any suggestions please?

• Disable USB powered light from command line?

  I have a nice little USB light which has no off switch, it is 'on' for the duration of being plugged in. My question is, is there a way of disabling the USB port so as to turn off the light while it is still plugged in? Preferably, this could be done from the command line, but if it's possible at all that would be really cool regardless. I use Mac and Linux, but am interested to learn if this is possible in any OS, or if physical hardware prevents usage like this.

• How can I automatically change the system keyboard layout when plugging in an external keyboard?

  I have a US-Style laptop, which is fine, but I also have a UK-style Ergonomic USB keyboard. As such I usually have the US key layout set, but when I settle in at my desk and use the UK USB keyboard I find myself making stupid mistakes on symbols (normally a pretty good touch typist on either ergo or standard kbd). Can anyone think of a clean way of setting the keyboard layout based on the inferred layout/USBID of any plugged in Keyboard? Even having a custom setting such as adding a specific USB ID to a runtime script that checks if its plugged in or not. Can this be done without the user having to logout/in? I remember doing something similar with xorg.conf, but that required logout.
