• How to access Windows Registry from DOS

  How to access Windows Registry from DOS? I need to access registry from DOS, while I boot from DOS bootable disk. I've searched all the internet, and found only Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, which can not be used in DOS, as I understand. Also I've found RegView (from many mirrors), which isn't working too (I've tried many instructions). Is there any easy-in-usage tool, like reg.exe, which is able to load registry hives, so that I can change registry values?? Or any working instructions ?? Note: I already have a bootable drive, which can read/write to NTFS drives. Thanks in advance!

• LVM mirroring VS RAID1

  Hi. Having learned a bit about LVM mirroring, I thought about replacing the current RAID-1 scheme I'm using to gain some flexibility. Problem is that according to what I found on the Internet, LVM is: 1) Slower then RAID-1, at least in reading (as only single volume being used for reading). 2) Non-reliable on power interrupts, and requires disk cache disabling for prevention of data loss. http://www.joshbryan.com/blog/2008/01/02/lvm2-mirrors-vs-md-raid-1/ Also it seems, at least to several setup guides I read (http://www.tcpdump.com/kb/os/linux/lvm-mirroring/intro.html), that one actually requires a 3rd disk for storing the LVM log. This makes the setup completely unusable on 2 disks installations, and lowers the amount of used mirror disks on higher amount of disks. Can anyone comment the above facts, and let me know his experience of using LVM mirroring? Thanks.

  In my network, I've some Ubuntu machines which need to download files from nl.archive.ubuntu.com. Since it's quite a waste of time to download everything multiple times, I've setup a squid proxy for caching the data. Another use for this proxy was rewriting requests for archive.ubuntu.com or *.archive.ubuntu.com to nl.archive.ubuntu.com because this mirror is faster than the US mirrors. This has worked quite well, but after a recent install of my caching machine, the configuration was lost. I remember having a separate perl program for handling this rewrite. How do I setup such a squid proxy which rewrites the host *.example.com to www.example.com and cache the result of the latter?

• CentOS ISO DVD self-disc-check failing

  I downloaded a CentOS 5.4 DVD ISO from one of the official mirrors. The MD5 sum is correct for the iso file that was downloaded. I burned the ISO onto a DVD+R using ImgBurn. I got no errors during the burning process and it says it finished burning successfully. When booting a server using this DVD to install CentOS on it, the first thing I did was run the self-disc-check (where it checks the files to make sure its genuine, etc). It failed. Didn't really say why. Am I doing something wrong here? Or is there someplace I can see why its failing? If the MD5 is correct and I don't get any burning errors, how can it be failing its own self-check mechanism?

• CentOS - Yum doesn't update anymore?

  I've been trying to use yum now, but for some reason, not even the search work anymore. I even tried putting packages I already downloaded in the search criteria and is the same. • What happened to WinFS?

  The most interesting feature that was ever connected to what eventually became Vista was WinFS, a revolutionary (so it seemed, at least back then) new way of storing and accessing information on a computer. This feature was cut despite actually reaching a closed alpha/technical preview release. There was a smoke and mirrors blog post from MS about the technology living on in an upcoming SQL server release, but to me it just felt like it was axed, hard. Does anyone have any idea what happened to it? Is it killed, or just on the backburner? Was it just impossible to implement, too expensive, or did someone think of a better idea? Are there any projects (From MS or anyone else) that have similar goals?

• Problem to install Apache 2.4.2 in Ubuntu 12.04

  I followed these steps to install Apache 2.4.2 in Ubuntu 12.04, but it seems Apache is not installed, here's what I did (I followed the steps in this site http://www.discusswire.com/apache-2-4-installation-ubuntu/): sudo apt-get install build-essential sudo apt-get build-dep apache2 wget http://apache.mirrors.pair.com/httpd/httpd-2.4.2.tar.gz tar -xzvf httpd-2.4.2.tar.gz && cd httpd-2.4.2 sudo ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-mods-shared=all --enable-deflate --enable-proxy --enable-proxy-balancer --enable-proxy-http --with-mpm=prefork sudo make sudo make install when I tried to start by issuing sudo /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start at terminal, I got the following warning: "AH00558: httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1. Set the 'ServerName' directive globally to suppress this message" and when I typed top at terminal, the apache is not there. I also tried to go to http://localhost/ or 127.0.0.1 or even 127.0.1.1 it showed "Can't establish connection to server ..." message. ps: I checked the error log and it showed "[Fri Jul 27 15:49:00.703901 2012] [proxy_balancer:emerg] [pid 20781] AH01177: Failed to lookup provider 'shm' for 'slotmem': is mod_slotmem_shm loaded?? • apt-get update very slow, stuck at "Waiting for headers"

  I have looked at similar questions: Stuck at 0% [waiting for headers] (apt) apt-get update stuck on "Waiting for Headers" However neither one of them answer my problem. I am running 12.04 AMD64 and have recently started getting an issue that when I update my repos from my connection at home through a terminal, using sudo apt-get update, it takes forever (literally after 2 hours it was at 28%), however when I run from a different location it takes less than 5 minutes to complete. I have attempted changing which mirror I use but that does not solve the issue. I have also cut down what is in my sources list but this also makes no difference. There are no faults on my ADSL line as I have already contacted my ISP to check this. It also makes no difference if I use a WiFi or network cable connection. What could be my issue? A speed test (www.speedtest.net) comes out at about 0.9 Mbps down and 0.42 Mbps up (which is a shade under the advertised line speed), I reside in South Africa and use the UCT LEG server. But I have also tried the other mirrors available in SA....none of them make a difference.

  Oracle Linux 6.3 channels are now available online http://public-yum.oracle.com repositories. Both base channels and latest channels are available (for free for everyone) http://linux.oracle.com repositories. Behind our customer portal but effectively the same content. Source RPMs (.srpm) are being uploaded to http://oss.oracle.com/ol6/SRPMS-updates. OL6.3 contains UEK2 kernel-uek-2.6.39-200.24.1. The source rpm is in the above location but our public GIT repository will be synced up shortly as well at https://oss.oracle.com/git/?p=linux-uek-2.6.39.git;a=summary. Unlike some others, of course, complete source, complete changelog, complete checkin history, both mainline and our own available. No need to go assemble things from a website manually. Another cool thing coming up is a boot iso for OL6.3 that boots up uek (2.6.39-200.24.1) as install kernel and uses btrfs as the default filesystem for installation. So latest and greatest direct access to btrfs, a modern well-tested, current kernel, freely available. Enjoy. • How can I get run Ubuntu Desktop on my Galaxy Nexus?

  On the Ubuntu for phones site it advertises the desktop view feature: "The phone becomes a full PC and thin client when docked.". And there's the demo by Canonical of something similar running under Ubuntu for Android. I realize they're different systems, but the end effect is in both is to have a full Ubuntu system running on the phone. I've installed Ubuntu Touch Preview on my Galaxy Nexus (toro), and it's working as expected (no cellular signal, but wifi works, etc). But when I plug in a monitor via HDMI it just mirrors the phone's touch display. There's also currently no bluetooth support for attaching keyboard and mouse. Keyboard only kind of works via USB, and mouse not at all. I've also tried running Ubuntu under Android via VNC, but the lack of responsiveness of VNC makes it impractical for daily use. I'd consider that route again if there is some way to make the UI more responsive. So the question is, how can set up my phone to run Ubuntu Desktop in a way that's useable as a laptop replacement? Is there a way to enable Desktop View on Ubuntu Touch? Or can I run Ubuntu for Android as in the previously referenced demo? Plugging into a monitor would be OK, but I'd love to be able to use the desktop interface with mouse and keyboard through the phone's screen as well. Touch input and an onscreen keyboard would be a plus but is definitely not necessary.

  I need to create an http url at my laptop to have a Ubuntu installation begin within my laptop on a Xen environment. I do not want to archive entire 15 GB Ubuntu repositories on my machine. It is not possible to use a CD,ISO,loop mounted disk (reason mentioned below). I have tried using netboot image on local machine which failed because if you are attempting to create a virtual machine on a hardware which does not support VT virt-manager installer necessarily needs a URL of this sort http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/ any other option to create guest OS is simply grayed out. The unfortunate part is my Ethernet connections do not work when I boot with Xen-4.0 and a pv-ops Dom0 kernel from Jeremy's tree.Which is where I have to do this work.So I have to create a URL structure which is similar to Ubuntu mirrors.So how can I do this in bare minimum so that at least the console boots and once the console comes I can do some work.

• apt-get update stuck on "Waiting for Headers"

  I'm setting up a Maverick server on a spare PC. The install completes fine and the system boots up into the shell. However, when I try to do a apt-get update , apt hangs on almost every entry with the message 99% [Waiting for headers] sometimes a message of 96 b/s appears on the far right. The actual percent that it claims also varies. Searching around online gave a potential solution by using the option Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth="0" this somewhat alleviates the problem, i.e. it stalls on every other entry with the same message as above. If you wait it out (the whole update took about 4 hours), the update still fails as a good portion of the hits show a "unable to connect" or similar message, despite the fact that I can ping the server from the pc just fine. The problem is also unrelated to the mirror used since I've tried about a dozen mirrors with no success, I've even tried commenting out everything but the main entry in sources.list and it still refuses to update. The network connection is fine since I can ping and wget (apt won't let me install lynx until I run a successful update) just fine. I've also reinstalled the distro with no luck. The only thing weird about the setup is that the PC is connecting to the internet through my windows laptop with ICS configured properly, but as I've said before, the network connection is fine.

  I am affected by the BUG: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/+bug/874241 Otherwise, if like me you have a laptop connected to a second monitor of higher resolution, LIGHTDM at the login stage, mirrors the displays in both screens and assign to them a common resolution (1024X768) in my case, instead of extending the desktop (Primary screen with the greeter and secondary with just a logo as mentioned in the Multiple Monitors UX specifications book for 12.04). • Twinview broken on upgrade to ubuntu 10.10

  I have been on 9.10 for over a year on the grounds that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, I had a spare weekend and figured it was probably about time... I performed an upgrade to 10.4, and everything seemed to proceed smoothly, so I took the plunge and went for 10.10. Disaster. My twinview Nvidia display which had been working perfectly is now broken. On boot everything seems fine, but when X starts and the second monitor springs into life the primary winks out and switches off - almost as if its been put into an unsupported display mode. The system seems to think there's a second monitor - the nvidia logo is split across the two screens, but it can't seem to start. Things I've tried: Swapping the monitors (one is older than the other, and its definitely the port not the actual monitor) Rolling back to an old Xorg conf from prior to the upgrade Installing a non-beta driver direct from Nvidia (this seems to start both monitors but then apparently stops boot and causes the second display to 'wink'. Twinview seems non-functional, both displays are mirrors) Disabling EDID Disabling twinview, logging in and attempting to use the Nvidia config to re-detect the monitors (second monitor is falsely detected and won't go higher than 1024x768. Selecting 'apply' causes one screen to go blank and the other to display garbage) googling for about 5 hours looking for similar problems, none of the offered solutions seemed to work I'm at a loss, and it is looking very much like I'm going to have to go through a time consuming reinstall to downgrade back to the working 10.4. Any thoughts?

  I encountered the R Language recently with O'Reilly books and while from the context I knew it was a language for dealing with statistics, doing a web search for the support web site was futile. However I have now located the web site and it is at http://www.r-project.org/R is a free language available for a number of platforms including windows. CRAN mirrors are available at a number of locations worldwide.Here is the official description:"R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R can be considered as a different implementation of S. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R. • Is Moving Entity Framework objects over a webservice really the best way?

  I've inherited a .NET project that has close to 2 thousand clients out in the field that need to push data periodically up to a central repository. The clients wake up and attempt to push the data up via a series of WCF webservices where they are passing each entity framework entity as parameter. Once the service receives this object, it preforms some business logic on the data, and then turns around and sticks it in it's own database that mirrors the database on the client machines. The trick is, is that this data is being transmitted over a metered connection, which is very expensive. So optimizing the data is a serious priority. Now, we are using a custom encoder that compresses the data (and decompresses it on the other end) while it is being transmitted, and this is reducing the data footprint. However, the amount of data that the clients are using, seem ridiculously large, given the amount of information that is actually being transmitted. It seems me that entity framework itself may be to blame. I'm suspecting that the objects are very large when serialized to be sent over wire, with a lot context information and who knows what else, when what we really need is just the 'new' inserts. Is using the entity framework and WCF services as we have done so far the correct way, architecturally, of approaching this n-tiered, asynchronous, push only problem? Or is there a different approach, that could optimize the data use?

• Lwjgl camera causing movement to be mirrored

  I'm having a problem in that everything is rendered and the movement is fine. However, everything seems to be mirrored. In the sense that the TriangleMob should move towards me, but it doesn't instead it mirrors my action. I move forward the TriangleMob moves backwards. I move left, it moves right. I move backwards, it moves forward. The code works if I do this glPushMatrix(); glTranslatef(-position.x, -position.y, -position.z); glCallList(objectDisplayList); glPopMatrix(); However, I'm scared this will cause a problem later on. I suppose the code works. However, shouldn't the call be glPushMatrix(); glTranslatef(position.x, position.y, position.z); glCallList(objectDisplayList); glPopMatrix(); I think the problem could be caused by how I'm doing the camera, which is this glLoadIdentity(); glRotatef(player.getRotation().x, 1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f); glRotatef(player.getRotation().y, 0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f); glRotatef(player.getRotation().z, 0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f); glTranslatef(player.getPosition().x, player.getPosition().y, player.getPosition().z);

• Dual monitor, permission issue

  I had a dual monitor configuration going on for quite some time. One day, after moving the computer to another location and reconnecting everything, it changed such that I saw everything in double (being very much sober), I think it's called the 'mirrors' config. Anyway, from there on, there was nothing to be done through the system settings gui to change it back, as it wouldn't allow me to save any modification. The error I get when clicking 'save' is : "Failed to create file /home/me/monitors.xml.xxxxxx. Permission denied", xxxx being a random code, changing everytime. However, I can save all the configurations I want just fine by using the terminal, in my case: xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --right-of VGA-1 So I do have a workaround and this is therefore a question more out of curiosity. What could possibly have changed to make it impossible to do it through the gui and still letting me change the config using xrandr without being root? I'm having a hard time believing it could have anything to do with disconnecting/reconnecting the monitors... Any idea? Thanks !

  Hi, I've been working through the Nexus guide this weekend and I've got everything set up, to the point that I can publish a snapshot to my local nexus install. I can't seem to work out how to get m2eclipse to see the snapshot and offer it as an option in the Add Dependencies search panel. How do I do that? Thanks!   Hi there. I'm currently setting up Hudson to push artifacts to my Nexus repository upon succesful builds. Unfortunately I am having some trouble with getting Hudson to deploy using Nexus groups. I have two groups, upbeat.nexus (private) and public.nexus (public). I've set up the associated repositories in Nexus already. • Using SetWindowTheme() on controls in WindowsFormsHost in WPF?

  I have an application I'm developing which closely mirrors Windows 7's Device Stage. In Device Stage, beneath the main banner there is a ListView containing actions embodied as ListViewItems. In my WPF application, I used WindowsFormsHost to host a WinForms ListView so that I could use SetWindowTheme() on it and apply Windows Vista/7 styling to it. This, however, does not work and doesn't achieve the same effect it does when used in Windows Forms. How can I achieve the Windows 7 look on a ListView in WPF? I'm not looking to create a custom style then apply it because frankly that's too much of a pain in the ass to continue using WPF for this app. Thanks! :)

• 2 way synchronization of in-house gitosis repositories server with Github repositories

  We use gitosis as our local in-house shared repository and also have a private Github account that mirrors our local repository. If one does a git push to the in-house repository the post-update hook updates the Github repository. How can I make this two way without causing "loops"? I.e. if someone pushes to the Github repository, I would like it to also update the in-house gitosis repository. A pointer to an example of how to do it would be greatly appreciated. Or if there are recommendations of alternatives to gitosis that would make this kind of thing easy, I would consider migrating to that.

• Forcing a page to load itself in another page's iframe

  I'm a fairly inexperienced web designer learning css/html on the fly for a company's web site. I want to keep menus, banners, etc in one document so I don't have to repeat updates across many documents. My solution was to make an index.aspx file with the menus and headers, then have a simple iframe for content. This works quite well and updates easily. the format is: www.site.com/index.aspx?page=page1.htm www.site.com/index.aspx?page=page2.htm The problem -- Google is indexing my iframe'd pages and linking to them directly: www.site.com/page1.htm www.site.com/page2.htm How can I set up redirects to page1.htm forwards to index.aspx?page=page1.htm without creating a "hall of mirrors" effect inside the original iframe?

  Windows 7 and Windows Vista have a Region and Language control panel which contains a Formats tab which contains a popup menu titled Format. This menu allows the user to select from among many language-oriented sets of number, currency, time, and date formatting preferences regardless of the language of the base system. For example, I could decide I prefer the default currency symbol to be Japanese yen on a US English system. The Windows Contacts application changes its behavior depending on these format preferences. For example, if I select Japanese formatting preferences, Windows Contacts displays and lets me edit phonetic names (AKA "ruby", "yomi", and "furigana") but not middle names. If I select US English formatting preferences, Windows Contacts displays and lets me edit middle names but not phonetic names. I need to write code (native C calling Win32) which mirrors the behavior of the Windows Contacts application in this respect. Which API should I call?
