  • Compass - Lucene Full text search. Structure and Best Practice.

    - by Rob
    Hi, I have played about with the tutorial and Compass itself for a bit now. I have just started to ramp up the use of it and have found that the performance slows drastically. I am certain that this is due to my mappings and the relationships that I have between entities and was looking for suggestions about how this should be best done. Also as a side question I wanted to know if a variable is in an @searchableComponent but is not defined as @searchable when the component object is pulled out of Compass results will you be able to access that variable? I have 3 main classes that I want to search on - Provider, Location and Activity. They are all inter-related - a Provider can have many locations and activites and has an address; A Location has 1 provider, many activities and an address; An activity has 1 provider and many locations. I have a join table between activity and Location called ActivityLocation that can later provider additional information about the relationship. My classes are mapped to compass as shown below for provider location activity and address. This works but gives a huge index and searches on it are comparatively slow, any advice would be great. Cheers, Rob @Searchable public class AbstractActivity extends LightEntity implements Serializable { /** * Serialisation ID */ private static final long serialVersionUID = 3445339493203407152L; @SearchableId (name="actID") private Integer activityId =-1; • What is the fastest cyclic synchronization in Java (ExecutorService vs. CyclicBarrier vs. X)?

    - by Alex Dunlop
    Which Java synchronization construct is likely to provide the best performance for a concurrent, iterative processing scenario with a fixed number of threads like the one outlined below? After experimenting on my own for a while (using ExecutorService and CyclicBarrier) and being somewhat surprised by the results, I would be grateful for some expert advice and maybe some new ideas. Existing questions here do not seem to focus primarily on performance, hence this new one. Thanks in advance! The core of the app is a simple iterative data processing algorithm, parallelized to the spread the computational load across 8 cores on a Mac Pro, running OS X 10.6 and Java 1.6.0_07. The data to be processed is split into 8 blocks and each block is fed to a Runnable to be executed by one of a fixed number of threads. Parallelizing the algorithm was fairly straightforward, and it functionally works as desired, but its performance is not yet what I think it could be. The app seems to spend a lot of time in system calls synchronizing, so after some profiling I wonder whether I selected the most appropriate synchronization mechanism(s). A key requirement of the algorithm is that it needs to proceed in stages, so the threads need to sync up at the end of each stage. The main thread prepares the work (very low overhead), passes it to the threads, lets them work on it, then proceeds when all threads are done, rearranges the work (again very low overhead) and repeats the cycle. The machine is dedicated to this task, Garbage Collection is minimized by using per-thread pools of pre-allocated items, and the number of threads can be fixed (no incoming requests or the like, just one thread per CPU core). V1 - ExecutorService My first implementation used an ExecutorService with 8 worker threads. The program creates 8 tasks holding the work and then lets them work on it, roughly like this: // create one thread per CPU executorService = Executors.newFixedThreadPool( 8 ); ... // now process data in cycles while( ...) { // package data into 8 work items ... // create one Callable task per work item ... // submit the Callables to the worker threads executorService.invokeAll( taskList ); } This works well functionally (it does what it should), and for very large work items indeed all 8 CPUs become highly loaded, as much as the processing algorithm would be expected to allow (some work items will finish faster than others, then idle). However, as the work items become smaller (and this is not really under the program's control), the user CPU load shrinks dramatically: blocksize | system | user | cycles/sec 256k 1.8% 85% 1.30 64k 2.5% 77% 5.6 16k 4% 64% 22.5 4096 8% 56% 86 1024 13% 38% 227 256 17% 19% 420 64 19% 17% 948 16 19% 13% 1626 Legend: - block size = size of the work item (= computational steps) - system = system load, as shown in OS X Activity Monitor (red bar) - user = user load, as shown in OS X Activity Monitor (green bar) - cycles/sec = iterations through the main while loop, more is better The primary area of concern here is the high percentage of time spent in the system, which appears to be driven by thread synchronization calls. As expected, for smaller work items, ExecutorService.invokeAll() will require relatively more effort to sync up the threads versus the amount of work being performed in each thread. But since ExecutorService is more generic than it would need to be for this use case (it can queue tasks for threads if there are more tasks than cores), I though maybe there would be a leaner synchronization construct. V2 - CyclicBarrier The next implementation used a CyclicBarrier to sync up the threads before receiving work and after completing it, roughly as follows: main() { // create the barrier barrier = new CyclicBarrier( 8 + 1 ); // create Runable for thread, tell it about the barrier Runnable task = new WorkerThreadRunnable( barrier ); // start the threads for( int i = 0; i < 8; i++ ) { // create one thread per core new Thread( task ).start(); } while( ... ) { // tell threads about the work ... // N threads + this will call await(), then system proceeds barrier.await(); // ... now worker threads work on the work... // wait for worker threads to finish barrier.await(); } } class WorkerThreadRunnable implements Runnable { CyclicBarrier barrier; WorkerThreadRunnable( CyclicBarrier barrier ) { this.barrier = barrier; } public void run() { while( true ) { // wait for work barrier.await(); // do the work ... // wait for everyone else to finish barrier.await(); } } } Again, this works well functionally (it does what it should), and for very large work items indeed all 8 CPUs become highly loaded, as before. However, as the work items become smaller, the load still shrinks dramatically: blocksize | system | user | cycles/sec 256k 1.9% 85% 1.30 64k 2.7% 78% 6.1 16k 5.5% 52% 25 4096 9% 29% 64 1024 11% 15% 117 256 12% 8% 169 64 12% 6.5% 285 16 12% 6% 377 For large work items, synchronization is negligible and the performance is identical to V1. But unexpectedly, the results of the (highly specialized) CyclicBarrier seem MUCH WORSE than those for the (generic) ExecutorService: throughput (cycles/sec) is only about 1/4th of V1. A preliminary conclusion would be that even though this seems to be the advertised ideal use case for CyclicBarrier, it performs much worse than the generic ExecutorService. V3 - Wait/Notify + CyclicBarrier It seemed worth a try to replace the first cyclic barrier await() with a simple wait/notify mechanism: main() { // create the barrier // create Runable for thread, tell it about the barrier // start the threads while( ... ) { // tell threads about the work // for each: workerThreadRunnable.setWorkItem( ... ); // ... now worker threads work on the work... // wait for worker threads to finish barrier.await(); } } class WorkerThreadRunnable implements Runnable { CyclicBarrier barrier; @NotNull volatile private Callable<Integer> workItem; WorkerThreadRunnable( CyclicBarrier barrier ) { this.barrier = barrier; this.workItem = NO_WORK; } final protected void setWorkItem( @NotNull final Callable<Integer> callable ) { synchronized( this ) { workItem = callable; notify(); } } public void run() { while( true ) { // wait for work while( true ) { synchronized( this ) { if( workItem != NO_WORK ) break; try { wait(); } catch( InterruptedException e ) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } // do the work ... // wait for everyone else to finish barrier.await(); } } } Again, this works well functionally (it does what it should). blocksize | system | user | cycles/sec 256k 1.9% 85% 1.30 64k 2.4% 80% 6.3 16k 4.6% 60% 30.1 4096 8.6% 41% 98.5 1024 12% 23% 202 256 14% 11.6% 299 64 14% 10.0% 518 16 14.8% 8.7% 679 The throughput for small work items is still much worse than that of the ExecutorService, but about 2x that of the CyclicBarrier. Eliminating one CyclicBarrier eliminates half of the gap. V4 - Busy wait instead of wait/notify Since this app is the primary one running on the system and the cores idle anyway if they're not busy with a work item, why not try a busy wait for work items in each thread, even if that spins the CPU needlessly. The worker thread code changes as follows: class WorkerThreadRunnable implements Runnable { // as before final protected void setWorkItem( @NotNull final Callable<Integer> callable ) { workItem = callable; } public void run() { while( true ) { // busy-wait for work while( true ) { if( workItem != NO_WORK ) break; } // do the work ... // wait for everyone else to finish barrier.await(); } } } Also works well functionally (it does what it should). blocksize | system | user | cycles/sec 256k 1.9% 85% 1.30 64k 2.2% 81% 6.3 16k 4.2% 62% 33 4096 7.5% 40% 107 1024 10.4% 23% 210 256 12.0% 12.0% 310 64 11.9% 10.2% 550 16 12.2% 8.6% 741 For small work items, this increases throughput by a further 10% over the CyclicBarrier + wait/notify variant, which is not insignificant. But it is still much lower-throughput than V1 with the ExecutorService. V5 - ? So what is the best synchronization mechanism for such a (presumably not uncommon) problem? I am weary of writing my own sync mechanism to completely replace ExecutorService (assuming that it is too generic and there has to be something that can still be taken out to make it more efficient). It is not my area of expertise and I'm concerned that I'd spend a lot of time debugging it (since I'm not even sure my wait/notify and busy wait variants are correct) for uncertain gain. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Communicating between C# application and Android app via bluetooth

    - by Akki
    The android application acts as a server in this case. I have a main activity which creates a Thread to handle serverSocket and a different thread to handle the socket connection. I am using a uuid common to C# and android. I am using 32feet bluetooth library for C#. The errors i am facing are 1) My logcat shows this debug log Error while doing socket.connect()1 java.io.IOException: File descriptor in bad state Message: File descriptor in bad state Localized Message: File descriptor in bad state Received : Testing Connection Count of Thread is : 1 2) When i try to send something via C# app the second time, this exception is thrown: A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.dll System.InvalidOperationException: BeginConnect cannot be called while another asynchronous operation is in progress on the same Socket. at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.DoBeginConnect(EndPoint endPointSnapshot, SocketAddress socketAddress, LazyAsyncResult asyncResult) at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.BeginConnect(EndPoint remoteEP, AsyncCallback callback, Object state) at InTheHand.Net.Bluetooth.Msft.SocketBluetoothClient.BeginConnect(BluetoothEndPoint remoteEP, AsyncCallback requestCallback, Object state) at InTheHand.Net.Sockets.BluetoothClient.BeginConnect(BluetoothEndPoint remoteEP, AsyncCallback requestCallback, Object state) at InTheHand.Net.Sockets.BluetoothClient.BeginConnect(BluetoothAddress address, Guid service, AsyncCallback requestCallback, Object state) at BTSyncClient.Form1.connect() in c:\users\----\documents\visual studio 2010\Projects\TestClient\TestClient\Form1.cs:line 154 I only know android application programming and i designed the C# by learning bit and pieces. • Android App Crashes On Second Run

    - by user1091286
    My app runs fine on first run. On the Menu I added two choices options and quit. options which set up a new intent who goes to a PreferenceActivity and quit which simply call: "android.os.Process.killProcess(android.os.Process.myPid());" On the second time I run my app (after I quit from inside the emulator) it crashes.. Ideas? the menu is called by the foolowing code: @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.menu , menu); return true; } - @Override public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) { // Set up a new intent between the updater service and the main screen Intent options = new Intent(this, OptionsScreenActivity.class); // Switch case on the options switch (item.getItemId()) { case R.id.options: startActivity(options); return true; case R.id.quit: android.os.Process.killProcess(android.os.Process.myPid()); return true; • JNI String Corruption

    - by Chris Dennett
    Hi everyone, I'm getting weird string corruption across JNI calls which is causing problems on the the Java side. Every so often, I'll get a corrupted string in the passed array, which sometimes has existing parts of the original non-corrupted string. The C++ code is supposed to set the first index of the array to the address, it's a nasty hack to get around method call limitations. Additionally, the application is multi-threaded. remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.1.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.4.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.6.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.2.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.9.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: {garbage here} java.lang.NullPointerException at kokuks.KKSAddress.<init>(KKSAddress.java:139) at kokuks.KKSAddress.createAddress(KKSAddress.java:48) at kokuks.KKSSocket._recvFrom(KKSSocket.java:963) at kokuks.scheduler.RecvOperation$1.execute(RecvOperation.java:144) at kokuks.scheduler.RecvOperation$1.execute(RecvOperation.java:1) at kokuks.KKSEvent.run(KKSEvent.java:58) at kokuks.KokuKS.handleJNIEventExpiry(KokuKS.java:872) at kokuks.KokuKS.handleJNIEventExpiry_fjni(KokuKS.java:880) at kokuks.KokuKS.runSimulator_jni(Native Method) at kokuks.KokuKS$1.run(KokuKS.java:773) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:717) remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.7.2:49153 The null pointer exception comes from trying to use the corrupt string. In C++, the address prints to standard out normally, but doing this reduces the rate of errors, from what I can see. • Innovation, Adaptability and Agility Emerge As Common Themes at ACORD LOMA Insurance Forum

    - by [email protected]
    Helen Pitts, senior product marketing manager for Oracle Insurance is blogging from the show floor of the ACORD LOMA Insurance Forum this week. Sessions at the ACORD LOMA Insurance Forum this week highlighted the need for insurance companies to think creatively and be innovative with their technology in order to adapt to continuously shifting market dynamics and drive business efficiency and agility.  LOMA President & CEO Robert Kerzner kicked off the day on Tuesday, citing how the recent downtown and recovery has impacted the insurance industry and the ways that companies are doing business.  He encouraged carriers to look for new ways to deliver solutions and offer a better service experience for consumers.  ACORD President & CEO Gregory Maciag reinforced Kerzner's remarks, noting how the industry's approach to technology and development of industry standards has evolved over the association's 40-year history and cited how the continued rise of mobile computing will change the way many carriers are doing business today and in the future. Drawing from his own experiences, popular keynote speaker and Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak continued this theme, delving into ways that insurers can unite business with technology.  "iWoz" encouraged insurers to foster an entrepreneurial mindset in a corporate environment to create a culture of creativity and innovation.  He noted that true innovation in business comes from those who have a passion for what they do.  Innovation was also a common theme in several sessions throughout the day with topics ranging from modernization of core systems, automated underwriting, distribution management, CRM and customer communications management.  It was evident that insurers have begun to move past the "old school" processes and systems that constrain agility, implementing new process models and modern technology to become nimble and more adaptive to the market.   Oracle Insurance executives shared a few examples of how insurers are achieving innovation during our Platinum Sponsor session, "Adaptive System Transformation:  Making Agility More Than a Buzzword." Oracle Insurance Senior Vice President and General Manager Don Russo was joined by Chuck Johnston, vice president, global strategy and alliances, and Srini Venkatasantham, vice president of product strategy.  The three shared how Oracle's adaptive solutions for insurance, with a focus on how the key pillars of an adaptive systems - configurable applications, accessible information, extensible content and flexible process - have helped insurers respond rapidly, perform effectively and win more business. Insurers looking to innovate their business with adaptive insurance solutions including policy administration, business intelligence, enterprise document automation, rating and underwriting, claims, CRM and more stopped by the Oracle Insurance booth on the exhibit floor.  It was a premiere destination for many participating in the exhibit hall tours conducted throughout the day. Finally, red was definitely the color of the evening at the Oracle Insurance "Red Hot" customer celebration at the House of Blues. The event provided a great opportunity for our customers to come together and network with the Oracle Insurance team and their peers in the industry.  We look forward to visiting more with of our customers and making new connections today. Helen Pitts is senior product marketing manager for Oracle Insurance.

  • Another question about handling game states

    - by Eva
    I'm making a game designed with the entity-component paradigm that uses systems to communicate between components as explained here. I've reached the point in my development that I need to add game states (such as paused, playing, level start, round start, game over, etc.), but I'm not sure how to do it with my framework. I've looked at this code example on game states which everyone seems to reference, but I don't think it fits with my framework. It seems to have each state handling its own drawing and updating. My framework has a SystemManager that handles all the updating using systems. For example, here's my RenderingSystem class: public class RenderingSystem extends GameSystem { private GameView gameView_; /** * Constructor * Creates a new RenderingSystem. * @param gameManager The game manager. Used to get the game components. */ public RenderingSystem(GameManager gameManager) { super(gameManager); } /** * Method: registerGameView * Registers gameView into the RenderingSystem. * @param gameView The game view registered. */ public void registerGameView(GameView gameView) { gameView_ = gameView; } /** * Method: triggerRender * Adds a repaint call to the event queue for the dirty rectangle. */ public void triggerRender() { Rectangle dirtyRect = new Rectangle(); for (GameObject object : getRenderableObjects()) { GraphicsComponent graphicsComponent = object.getComponent(GraphicsComponent.class); dirtyRect.add(graphicsComponent.getDirtyRect()); } gameView_.repaint(dirtyRect); } /** * Method: renderGameView * Renders the game objects onto the game view. * @param g The graphics object that draws the game objects. */ public void renderGameView(Graphics g) { for (GameObject object : getRenderableObjects()) { GraphicsComponent graphicsComponent = object.getComponent(GraphicsComponent.class); if (!graphicsComponent.isVisible()) continue; GraphicsComponent.Shape shape = graphicsComponent.getShape(); BoundsComponent boundsComponent = object.getComponent(BoundsComponent.class); Rectangle bounds = boundsComponent.getBounds(); g.setColor(graphicsComponent.getColor()); if (shape == GraphicsComponent.Shape.RECTANGULAR) { g.fill3DRect(bounds.x, bounds.y, bounds.width, bounds.height, true); } else if (shape == GraphicsComponent.Shape.CIRCULAR) { g.fillOval(bounds.x, bounds.y, bounds.width, bounds.height); } } } /** * Method: getRenderableObjects * @return The renderable game objects. */ private HashSet<GameObject> getRenderableObjects() { return gameManager.getGameObjectManager().getRelevantObjects( getClass()); } } Also all the updating in my game is event-driven. I don't have a loop like theirs that simply updates everything at the same time. I like my framework because it makes it easy to add new GameObjects, but doesn't have the problems some component-based designs encounter when communicating between components. I would hate to chuck it just to get pause to work. Is there a way I can add game states to my game without removing the entity-component design? Does the game state example actually fit my framework, and I'm just missing something?

  • When a problem is resolved

    - by Rob Farley
    This month’s T-SQL Tuesday is hosted by Jen McCown, and she’s picked the topic of Resolutions. It’s a new year, and she’s thinking about what people have resolved to do this year. Unfortunately, I’ve never really done resolutions like that. I see too many people resolve to quit smoking, or lose weight, or whatever, and fail miserably. I’m not saying I don’t set goals, but it’s not a thing for New Year. The obvious joke is “1920x1080” as a resolution, but I’m not going there. I think Resolving is a strange word. It makes it sound like I’m having to solve a problem a second time, when actually, it’s more along the lines of solving a problem well enough for it to count as finished. If something has been resolved, a solution has been provided. There is a resolution, through the provision of a solution. It’s a strangeness of English. When I look up the word resolution at dictionary.com, it has 12 options, including “settling of a problem”. There’s a finality about resolution. If you resolve to do something, you’re saying “Yes. This is a done thing. I’m resolving to do it, which means that it may as well be complete already.” I like to think I resolve problems, rather than just solving them. I want my solving to be final and complete. If I tune a query, I don’t want to find that I’m back in there, re-tuning it at some point. Strangely, if I re-solve a problem, that implies that I didn’t resolve it in the first place. I only solved it. Temporarily. We “data-folk” live in a world where the most common answer is “It depends.” Frustratingly, the thing an answer depends on may still be changing in the system in question. That probably means that any solution that is put in place may need reinvestigating at some point later. So do I resolve things? Yes. Am I Chuck Norris, and solve things so well the world would break first? No. Do these two claims happily sit beside each other? No, unfortunately not. But I happily take responsibility for things, and let my clients depend on me to see it through. As far as they are concerned, it is resolved. And so I resolve to keep resolving, right through 2011.

  • Using Xlib via JNA to move a window

    - by rob
    I'm using JNA to manipulate application windows on Linux by sending Xlib messages but can't seem to move a window. My original implementation executed wmctrl on the shell to move the windows and that successfully moved the windows. Unfortunately, there's a noticeable amount of overhead associated with calling shell programs from Java, so now I'm trying to make direct API calls using JNA. I'm using the X11 example available from the JNA website and can successfully do a few tricks, such as enumerating the window IDs and reading window properties, so I know JNA+Xlib is at least partially working. First I tried moving the windows directly using XMoveWindow() but the window manager was apparently blocking those calls. I ran across a thread that suggested I needed to send a client message using XSendMessage(), so I've done that below, but apparently XSendMessage() is failing because the window doesn't move and I get a return value of 0. I'm guessing I omitted something obvious, but can't quite figure it out. Any suggestions? Note that, for the purposes of this example, the main method has a window ID hard-coded. This is the window ID of the window I'm trying to move (obtained using wmctrl -l on the console). import com.sun.jna.NativeLong; import com.sun.jna.Pointer; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11.Atom; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11.AtomByReference; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11.Display; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11.Window; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11.WindowByReference; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11.XEvent; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11.XTextProperty; import com.sun.jna.examples.unix.X11.XWindowAttributes; import com.sun.jna.ptr.IntByReference; import com.sun.jna.ptr.NativeLongByReference; import com.sun.jna.ptr.PointerByReference; private static final int FALSE = 0; /** C-style boolean "false" */ private static final int TRUE = 1; /** C-style boolean "true" */ public static void main(String[] args) { setWindowPos(new Window(0x01300007), 100, 100, 600, 400); // update the Window constructor with the appropriate ID given by wmctrl -l } public static boolean setWindowPos(Window window, int x, int y, int w, int h) { final X11 x11 = X11.INSTANCE; Display display = x11.XOpenDisplay(null); NativeLong mask = new NativeLong(X11.SubstructureRedirectMask | X11.SubstructureNotifyMask | X11.ResizeRedirectMask); XEvent event = new XEvent(); String msg = "_NET_MOVERESIZE_WINDOW"; //$NON-NLS-1$ long grflags = 0l; // use the default gravity of the window if (x != -1) grflags |= (1 << 8); if (y != -1) grflags |= (1 << 9); if (w != -1) grflags |= (1 << 10); if (h != -1) grflags |= (1 << 11); event.xclient.type = X11.ClientMessage; event.xclient.serial = new NativeLong(0l); event.xclient.send_event = TRUE; event.xclient.message_type = x11.XInternAtom(display, msg, false); event.xclient.window = window; event.xclient.format = 32; event.xclient.data.l[0] = new NativeLong(grflags); // gravity flags event.xclient.data.l[1] = new NativeLong(x); event.xclient.data.l[2] = new NativeLong(y); event.xclient.data.l[3] = new NativeLong(w); event.xclient.data.l[4] = new NativeLong(h); int status = x11.XSendEvent(display, x11.XDefaultRootWindow(display), FALSE, mask, event); x11.XFlush(display); // need to XFlush if we're not reading X events if (status == 0) { // 0 indicates XSendEvent failed logger.error("setWindowPos: XSendEvent failed (" + msg + ")"); //$NON-NLS-1$ return false; } return true; }

  • Safe, standard way to load images in ListView on a different thread?

    - by Po
    Before making this question, I have searched and read these ones: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/541966/android-how-do-i-do-a-lazy-load-of-images-in-listview http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1409623/android-issue-with-lazy-loading-images-into-a-listview My problem is I have a ListView, where: Each row contains an ImageView, whose content is to be loaded from the internet Each row's view is recycled as in ApiDemo's List14 What I want ultimately: Load images lazily, only when the user scrolls to them Load images on different thread(s) to maintain responsiveness My current approach: In the adapter's getView() method, apart from setting up other child views, I launch a new thread that loads the Bitmap from the internet. When that loading thread finishes, it returns the Bitmap to be set on the ImageView (I do this using AsyncTask or Handler). Because I recycle ImageViews, it may be the case that I first want to set a view with Bitmap#1, then later want to set it to Bitmap#2 when the user scrolls down. Bitmap#1 may happen to take longer than Bitmap#2 to load, so it may end up overwriting Bitmap#2 on the view. I solve this by maintaining a WeakHashMap that remembers the last Bitmap I want to set for that view. Below is somewhat a pseudocode for my current approach. I've ommitted other details like caching, just to keep the thing clear. public class ImageLoader { // keeps track of the last Bitmap we want to set for this ImageView private static final WeakHashMap<ImageView, AsyncTask> assignments = new WeakHashMap<ImageView, AsyncTask>(); /** Asynchronously sets an ImageView to some Bitmap loaded from the internet */ public static void setImageAsync(final ImageView imageView, final String imageUrl) { // cancel whatever previous task AsyncTask oldTask = assignments.get(imageView); if (oldTask != null) { oldTask.cancel(true); } // prepare to launch a new task to load this new image AsyncTask<String, Integer, Bitmap> newTask = new AsyncTask<String, Integer, Bitmap>() { protected void onPreExecute() { // set ImageView to some "loading..." image } protected Bitmap doInBackground(String... urls) { return loadFromInternet(imageUrl); } protected void onPostExecute(Bitmap bitmap) { // set Bitmap if successfully loaded, or an "error" image if (bitmap != null) { imageView.setImageBitmap(bitmap); } else { imageView.setImageResource(R.drawable.error); } } }; newTask.execute(); // mark this as the latest Bitmap we want to set for this ImageView assignments.put(imageView, newTask); } /** returns (Bitmap on success | null on error) */ private Bitmap loadFromInternet(String imageUrl) {} } Problem I still have: what if the Activity gets destroyed while some images are still loading? Is there any risk when the loading thread calls back to the ImageView later, when the Activity is already destroyed? Moreover, AsyncTask has some global thread-pool underneath, so if lengthy tasks are not canceled when they're not needed anymore, I may end up wasting time loading things users don't see. My current design of keeping this thing globally is too ugly, and may eventually cause some leaks that are beyond my understanding. Instead of making ImageLoader a singleton like this, I'm thinking of actually creating separate ImageLoader objects for different Activities, then when an Activity gets destroyed, all its AsyncTask will be canceled. Is this too awkward? Anyway, I wonder if there is a safe and standard way of doing this in Android. In addition, I don't know iPhone but is there a similar problem there and do they have a standard way to do this kind of task? Many thanks.

  • Hudson + Jboss AS 7.1 + Maven 3 Project Build Error

    - by Zehra Gül Çabuk
    I've wanted to prepare an environment that I'm able to build my project and run my tests on a integration server. So I've installed an Jboss application server 7.1 and deployed hudson.war to it. Then I've created a project to trigger "mvn clean install" and when I built it I've got following exception. [INFO] Using bundled Maven 3 installation [INFO] Checking Maven 3 installation environment [workspace] $ /disk7/hudson_home/maven/slavebundle/bundled-maven/bin/mvn --help [INFO] Checking Maven 3 installation version [INFO] Detected Maven 3 installation version: 3.0.3 [workspace] $ /disk7/hudson_home/maven/slavebundle/bundled-maven/bin/mvn clean install -V -B -Dmaven.ext.class.path=/disk7/hudson_home/maven/slavebundle/resources:/disk7/hudson_home/maven/slavebundle/lib/maven3-eventspy-3.0.jar:/disk7/jboss-as-7.1.0.Final/standalone/tmp/vfs/deploymentdf2a6dfa59ee3407/hudson-remoting-2.2.0.jar-407215e5de02980f/contents -Dhudson.eventspy.port=37183 -f pom.xml [DEBUG] Waiting for connection on port: 37183 Apache Maven 3.0.3 (r1075438; 2011-02-28 19:31:09+0200) Maven home: /disk7/hudson_home/maven/slavebundle/bundled-maven Java version: 1.7.0_04, vendor: Oracle Corporation Java home: /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_04/jre Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: UTF-8 OS name: "linux", version: "3.2.0-24-generic", arch: "amd64", family: "unix" [ERROR] o.h.m.e.DelegatingEventSpy - • Neo4j OutOfMemory problem

    Hi! This is my source code of Main.java. It was grabbed from neo4j-apoc-1.0 examples. • Placing component on Glass Pane

    - by Chris Lieb
    I have a subclass of JLabel that forms a component of my GUI. I have implemented the ability to drag and drop the component from one container to another, but without any visual effects. I want to have this JLabel follow the cursor during the drag of the item from one container to another. I figured that I could just create a glass pane and draw it on there. However, even after I add the component to the glass pane, set the component visible, and set the glass pane visible, and set the glass pane as opaque, I still so not see the component. I know the component works because I can add it to the content pane and have it show up. How do I add a component to the glass pane? package wpics509s10t7.view; import javax.swing.*; import wpics509s10t7.model.Tile; import java.awt.*; import java.awt.dnd.DragSource; import java.awt.event.AWTEventListener; import java.awt.event.MouseEvent; /** * GlassPane tutorial * "A well-behaved GlassPane" * http://weblogs.java.net/blog/alexfromsun/ * <p/> * This is the final version of the GlassPane * it is transparent for MouseEvents, * and respects underneath component's cursors by default, * it is also friedly for other users, * if someone adds a mouseListener to this GlassPane * or set a new cursor it will respect them * * @author Alexander Potochkin */ public class GlassPane extends JPanel implements AWTEventListener { private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private final JFrame frame; private TileView tv; // subclass of JLabel private Point point; private WordStealApp wsa; public GlassPane(JFrame frame, WordStealApp wsa) { super(null); this.wsa = wsa; this.frame = frame; setOpaque(true); setLayout(null); setVisible(true); composite = AlphaComposite.getInstance(AlphaComposite.SRC_OVER, 0.5f); } public void beginDrag(Tile t, Point p) { this.tv = new TileView(t, null, this.wsa, true); this.add(this.tv); System.out.println("Starting point: x=" + p.getX() + ",y=" + p.getY()); this.tv.setLocation((int)p.getX(), (int)p.getY()); this.tv.setVisible(true); } public void endDrag(Point p) { System.out.println("Ending point: x=" + p.getX() + ",y=" + p.getY()); this.remove(this.tv); this.tv.setVisible(false); this.tv = null; } public void eventDispatched(AWTEvent event) { if (event instanceof MouseEvent) { MouseEvent me = (MouseEvent) event; if (!SwingUtilities.isDescendingFrom(me.getComponent(), frame)) { return; } if (me.getID() == MouseEvent.MOUSE_EXITED && me.getComponent() == frame) { if (tv != null) { tv.setVisible(false); } point = null; } else { MouseEvent converted = SwingUtilities.convertMouseEvent(me.getComponent(), me, frame.getGlassPane()); point = converted.getPoint(); } repaint(); } } /** * If someone adds a mouseListener to the GlassPane or set a new cursor * we expect that he knows what he is doing * and return the super.contains(x, y) * otherwise we return false to respect the cursors * for the underneath components */ @Override public boolean contains(int x, int y) { if (getMouseListeners().length == 0 && getMouseMotionListeners().length == 0 && getMouseWheelListeners().length == 0 && getCursor() == Cursor.getPredefinedCursor(Cursor.DEFAULT_CURSOR)) { return false; } return super.contains(x, y); } }

  • Java Synchronized List Deadlock

    - by portoalet
    From Effective Java 2nd edition item 67 page 266-268: The background thread calls s.removeObserver, which attempts to lock observers, but it can’t acquire the lock, because the main thread already has the lock. All the while, the main thread is waiting for the background thread to finish removing the observer, which explains the deadlock. I am trying to find out which threads deadlock in the main method by using ThreadMXBean (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1102359/programmatic-deadlock-detection-in-java) , but why does it not return the deadlocked threads? I used a new Thread to run the ThreadMXBean detection. public class ObservableSet<E> extends ForwardingSet<E> { public ObservableSet(Set<E> set) { super(set); } private final List<SetObserver<E>> observers = new ArrayList<SetObserver<E>>(); public void addObserver(SetObserver<E> observer) { synchronized(observers) { observers.add(observer); } } public boolean removeObserver(SetObserver<E> observer) { synchronized(observers) { return observers.remove(observer); } } private void notifyElementAdded(E element) { synchronized(observers) { for (SetObserver<E> observer : observers) observer.added(this, element); } } @Override public boolean add(E element) { boolean added = super.add(element); if (added) notifyElementAdded(element); return added; } @Override public boolean addAll(Collection<? extends E> c) { boolean result = false; for (E element : c) result|=add(element); //callsnotifyElementAdded return result; } public static void main(String[] args) { ObservableSet<Integer> set = new ObservableSet<Integer>(new HashSet<Integer>()); final ThreadMXBean threadMxBean = ManagementFactory.getThreadMXBean(); Thread t = new Thread(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { while( true ) { long [] threadIds = threadMxBean.findDeadlockedThreads(); if( threadIds != null) { ThreadInfo[] infos = threadMxBean.getThreadInfo(threadIds); for( ThreadInfo threadInfo : infos) { StackTraceElement[] stacks = threadInfo.getStackTrace(); for( StackTraceElement stack : stacks ) { System.out.println(stack.toString()); } } } try { System.out.println("Sleeping.."); TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS.sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } } } }); t.start(); set.addObserver(new SetObserver<Integer>() { public void added(ObservableSet<Integer> s, Integer e) { ExecutorService executor = Executors.newSingleThreadExecutor(); final SetObserver<Integer> observer = this; try { executor.submit(new Runnable() { public void run() { s.removeObserver(observer); } }).get(); } catch (ExecutionException ex) { throw new AssertionError(ex.getCause()); } catch (InterruptedException ex) { throw new AssertionError(ex.getCause()); } finally { executor.shutdown(); } } }); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) set.add(i); } } public interface SetObserver<E> { // Invoked when an element is added to the observable set void added(ObservableSet<E> set, E element); } // ForwardingSet<E> simply wraps another Set and forwards all operations to it.

  • Trouble with detecting gestures over ListView

    - by Andrew
    I have an Activity that contains a ViewFlipper. The ViewFlipper includes 2 layouts, both of which are essentially just ListViews. So the idea here is that I have two lists and to navigate from one to the other I would use a horizontal swipe. I have that working. However, what ever list item your finger is on when the swipe begins executing, that item will also be long-clicked. Here is the relevant code I have: public class MyActivity extends Activity implements OnItemClickListener, OnClickListener { private static final int SWIPE_MIN_DISTANCE = 120; private static final int SWIPE_MAX_OFF_PATH = 250; private static final int SWIPE_THRESHOLD_VELOCITY = 200; private GestureDetector mGestureDetector; View.OnTouchListener mGestureListener; class MyGestureDetector extends SimpleOnGestureListener { @Override public boolean onFling(MotionEvent e1, MotionEvent e2, float velocityX, float velocityY) { try { if (Math.abs(e1.getY() - e2.getY()) > SWIPE_MAX_OFF_PATH) return false; // right to left swipe if(e1.getX() - e2.getX() > SWIPE_MIN_DISTANCE && Math.abs(velocityX) > SWIPE_THRESHOLD_VELOCITY) { if (mCurrentScreen != SCREEN_SECONDLIST) { mCurrentScreen = SCREEN_SECONDLIST; mFlipper.setInAnimation(inFromRightAnimation()); mFlipper.setOutAnimation(outToLeftAnimation()); mFlipper.showNext(); updateNavigationBar(); } } else if (e2.getX() - e1.getX() > SWIPE_MIN_DISTANCE && Math.abs(velocityX) > SWIPE_THRESHOLD_VELOCITY) { if (mCurrentScreen != SCREEN_FIRSTLIST) { mCurrentScreen = SCREEN_FIRSTLIST; mFlipper.setInAnimation(inFromLeftAnimation()); mFlipper.setOutAnimation(outToRightAnimation()); mFlipper.showPrevious(); updateNavigationBar(); } } } catch (Exception e) { // nothing } return true; } } @Override public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent event) { if (mGestureDetector.onTouchEvent(event)) return true; else return false; } ViewFlipper mFlipper; private int mCurrentScreen = SCREEN_FIRSTLIST; private ListView mList1; private ListView mList2; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); setContentView(R.layout.layout_flipper); mFlipper = (ViewFlipper) findViewById(R.id.flipper); mGestureDetector = new GestureDetector(new MyGestureDetector()); mGestureListener = new View.OnTouchListener() { public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event) { if (mGestureDetector.onTouchEvent(event)) { return true; } return false; } }; // set up List1 screen mList1List = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.list1); mList1List.setOnItemClickListener(this); mList1List.setOnTouchListener(mGestureListener); // set up List2 screen mList2List = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.list2); mList2List.setOnItemClickListener(this); mList2List.setOnTouchListener(mGestureListener); } … } If I change the "return true;" statement from the GestureDetector to "return false;", I do not get long-clicks. Unfortunately, I get regular clicks. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

  • Why isn't my algorithm for find the biggest and smallest inputs working?

    - by Matt Ellen
    I have started a new job, and with it comes a new language: Ironpython. Thankfully a good language :D Before starting I got to grips with Python on the whole, but that was only a week's worth of learning. Now I'm writing actual code. I've been charged with writing an algorithm that finds the best input parameter to collect data with. The basic algorithm is (as I've been instructed): Set the input parameter to a good guess Start collecting data When data is available stop collecting find the highest point If the point before this (i.e. for the previous parameter value) was higher and the point before that was lower then we've found the max otherwise the input parameter is increased by the initial guess. goto 2 If the max is found then the min needs to be found. To do this the algorithm carries on increasing the input, but by 1/10 of the max, until the current point is greater than the previous point and the point before that is also greater. Once the min is found then the algorithm stops. Currently I have a simplified data generator outputting the sin of the input, so that I know that the min value should be PI and the max value should be PI/2 The main Python code looks like this (don't worry, this is just for my edification, I don't write real code like this): import sys sys.path.append(r"F:\Programming Source\C#\PythonHelp\PythonHelp\bin\Debug") import clr clr.AddReferenceToFile("PythonHelpClasses.dll") import PythonHelpClasses from PHCStruct import Helper from System import Math helper = Helper() def run(): b = PythonHelpClasses.Executor() a = PythonHelpClasses.HasAnEvent() b.Input = 0.0 helper.__init__() def AnEventHandler(e): b.Stop() h = helper h.lastLastVal, h.lastVal, h.currentVal = h.lastVal, h.currentVal, e.Number if h.lastLastVal < h.lastVal and h.currentVal < h.lastVal and h.NotPast90: h.NotPast90 = False h.bestInput = h.lastInput inputInc = 0.0 if h.NotPast90: inputInc = Math.PI/10.0 else: inputInc = h.bestInput/10.0 if h.lastLastVal > h.lastVal and h.currentVal > h.lastVal and h.NotPast180: h.NotPast180 = False if h.NotPast180: h.lastInput, b.Input = b.Input, b.Input + inputInc b.Start(a) else: print "Best input:", h.bestInput print "Last input:", h.lastInput b.Stop() a.AnEvent += AnEventHandler b.Start(a) PHCStruct.py: class Helper(): def __init__(self): self.currentVal = 0 self.lastVal = 0 self.lastLastVal = 0 self.NotPast90 = True self.NotPast180 = True self.bestInput = 0 self.lastInput = 0 PythonHelpClasses has two small classes I wrote in C# before I realised how to do it in Ironpython. Executor runs a delegate asynchronously while it's running member is true. The important code: public void Start(HasAnEvent hae) { running = true; RunDelegate r = new RunDelegate(hae.UpdateNumber); AsyncCallback ac = new AsyncCallback(UpdateDone); IAsyncResult ar = r.BeginInvoke(Input, ac, null); } public void Stop() { running = false; } public void UpdateDone(IAsyncResult ar) { RunDelegate r = (RunDelegate)((AsyncResult)ar).AsyncDelegate; r.EndInvoke(ar); if (running) { AsyncCallback ac = new AsyncCallback(UpdateDone); IAsyncResult ar2 = r.BeginInvoke(Input, ac, null); } } HasAnEvent has a function that generates the sin of its input and fires an event with that result as its argument. i.e.: public void UpdateNumber(double val) { AnEventArgs e = new AnEventArgs(Math.Sin(val)); System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); if (null != AnEvent) { AnEvent(e); } } The sleep is in there just to slow things down a bit. The problem I am getting is that the algorithm is not coming up with the best input being PI/2 and the final input being PI, but I can't see why. Also the best and final inputs are different each time I run the programme. Can anyone see why? Also when the algorithm terminates the best and final inputs are printed to the screen multiple times, not just once. Can someone explain why?

  • HttpClient multithread performance

    - by pepper
    I have an application which downloads more than 4500 html pages from 62 target hosts using HttpClient (4.1.3 or 4.2-beta). It runs on Windows 7 64-bit. Processor - Core i7 2600K. Network bandwidth - 54 Mb/s. At this moment it uses such parameters: DefaultHttpClient and PoolingClientConnectionManager; Also it hasIdleConnectionMonitorThread from http://hc.apache.org/httpcomponents-client-ga/tutorial/html/connmgmt.html; Maximum total connections = 80; Default maximum connections per route = 5; For thread management it uses ForkJoinPool with the parallelism level = 5 (Do I understand correctly that it is a number of working threads?) In this case my network usage (in Windows task manager) does not rise above 2.5%. To download 4500 pages it takes 70 minutes. And in HttpClient logs I have such things: DEBUG ForkJoinPool-2-worker-1 [org.apache.http.impl.conn.PoolingClientConnectionManager]: Connection released: [id: 209][route: {}-http://stackoverflow.com][total kept alive: 6; route allocated: 1 of 5; total allocated: 10 of 80] Total allocated connections do not raise above 10-12, in spite of that I've set it up to 80 connections. If I'll try to rise parallelism level to 20 or 80, network usage remains the same but a lot connection time-outs will be generated. I've read tutorials on hc.apache.org (HttpClient Performance Optimization Guide and HttpClient Threading Guide) but they does not help. Task's code looks like this: public class ContentDownloader extends RecursiveAction { private final HttpClient httpClient; private final HttpContext context; private List<Entry> entries; public ContentDownloader(HttpClient httpClient, List<Entry> entries){ this.httpClient = httpClient; context = new BasicHttpContext(); this.entries = entries; } private void computeDirectly(Entry entry){ final HttpGet get = new HttpGet(entry.getLink()); try { HttpResponse response = httpClient.execute(get, context); int statusCode = response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode(); if ( (statusCode >= 400) && (statusCode <= 600) ) { logger.error("Couldn't get content from " + get.getURI().toString() + "\n" + response.toString()); } else { HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity(); if (entity != null) { String htmlContent = EntityUtils.toString(entity).trim(); entry.setHtml(htmlContent); EntityUtils.consumeQuietly(entity); } } } catch (Exception e) { } finally { get.releaseConnection(); } } @Override protected void compute() { if (entries.size() <= 1){ computeDirectly(entries.get(0)); return; } int split = entries.size() / 2; invokeAll(new ContentDownloader(httpClient, entries.subList(0, split)), new ContentDownloader(httpClient, entries.subList(split, entries.size()))); } } And the question is - what is the best practice to use multi threaded HttpClient, may be there is a some rules for setting up ConnectionManager and HttpClient? How can I use all of 80 connections and raise network usage? If necessary, I will provide more code.

  • Webdriver PageObject Implementation using PageFactory in Java

    - by kamal
    here is what i have so far: A working Webdriver based Java class, which logs-in to the application and goes to a Home page: import java.io.File; import java.io.IOException; import java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit; import org.apache.commons.io.FileUtils; import org.openqa.selenium.By; import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType; import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot; import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver; import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxDriver; import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxProfile; import org.testng.AssertJUnit; import org.testng.annotations.AfterMethod; import org.testng.annotations.BeforeMethod; import org.testng.annotations.Test; public class MLoginFFTest { private WebDriver driver; private String baseUrl; private String fileName = "screenshot.png"; @BeforeMethod public void setUp() throws Exception { FirefoxProfile profile = new FirefoxProfile(); profile.setPreference("network.http.phishy-userpass-length", 255); profile.setAssumeUntrustedCertificateIssuer(false); driver = new FirefoxDriver(profile); baseUrl = "https://a.b.c.d/"; driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(30, TimeUnit.SECONDS); } @Test public void testAccountLogin() throws Exception { driver.get(baseUrl + "web/certLogon.jsp"); driver.findElement(By.name("logonName")).clear(); AssertJUnit.assertEquals(driver.findElement(By.name("logonName")) .getTagName(), "input"); AssertJUnit.assertEquals(driver.getTitle(), "DA Logon"); driver.findElement(By.name("logonName")).sendKeys("username"); driver.findElement(By.name("password")).clear(); driver.findElement(By.name("password")).sendKeys("password"); driver.findElement(By.name("submit")).click(); driver.findElement(By.linkText("Account")).click(); AssertJUnit.assertEquals(driver.getTitle(), "View Account"); } @AfterMethod public void tearDown() throws Exception { File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver) .getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE); try { FileUtils.copyFile(screenshot, new File(fileName)); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } driver.quit(); } } Now as we see there are 2 pages: 1. Login page, where i have to enter username and password, and homepage, where i would be taken, once the authentication succeeds. Now i want to implement this as PageObjects using Pagefactory: so i have : package com.example.pageobjects; import static com.example.setup.SeleniumDriver.getDriver; import java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit; import org.openqa.selenium.support.PageFactory; import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.ExpectedCondition; import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.FluentWait; import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.Wait; public abstract class MPage<T> { private static final String BASE_URL = "https://a.b.c.d/"; private static final int LOAD_TIMEOUT = 30; private static final int REFRESH_RATE = 2; public T openPage(Class<T> clazz) { T page = PageFactory.initElements(getDriver(), clazz); getDriver().get(BASE_URL + getPageUrl()); ExpectedCondition pageLoadCondition = ((MPage) page).getPageLoadCondition(); waitForPageToLoad(pageLoadCondition); return page; } private void waitForPageToLoad(ExpectedCondition pageLoadCondition) { Wait wait = new FluentWait(getDriver()) .withTimeout(LOAD_TIMEOUT, TimeUnit.SECONDS) .pollingEvery(REFRESH_RATE, TimeUnit.SECONDS); wait.until(pageLoadCondition); } /** * Provides condition when page can be considered as fully loaded. * * @return */ protected abstract ExpectedCondition getPageLoadCondition(); /** * Provides page relative URL/ * * @return */ public abstract String getPageUrl(); } And for login Page not sure how i would implement that, as well as the Test, which would call these pages.

  • java will this threading setup work or what can i be doing wrong

    - by Erik
    Im a bit unsure and have to get advice. I have the: public class MyApp extends JFrame{ And from there i do; MyServer = new MyServer (this); MyServer.execute(); MyServer is a: public class MyServer extends SwingWorker<String, Object> { MyServer is doing listen_socket.accept() in the doInBackground() and on connection it create a new class Connection implements Runnable { I have the belove DbHelper that are a singleton. It holds an Sqlite connected. Im initiating it in the above MyApp and passing references all the way in to my runnable: class Connection implements Runnable { My question is what will happen if there are two simultaneous read or `write? My thought here was the all methods in the singleton are synchronized and would put all calls in the queue waiting to get a lock on the synchronized method. Will this work or what can i change? public final class DbHelper { private boolean initalized = false; private String HomePath = ""; private File DBFile; private static final String SYSTEM_TABLE = "systemtable"; Connection con = null; private Statement stmt; private static final ContentProviderHelper instance = new ContentProviderHelper (); public static ContentProviderHelper getInstance() { return instance; } private DbHelper () { if (!initalized) { initDB(); initalized = true; } } private void initDB() { DBFile = locateDBFile(); try { Class.forName("org.sqlite.JDBC"); // create a database connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:sqlite:J:/workspace/workComputer/user_ptpp"); } catch (SQLException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } private File locateDBFile() { File f = null; try{ HomePath = System.getProperty("user.dir"); System.out.println("HomePath: " + HomePath); f = new File(HomePath + "/user_ptpp"); if (f.canRead()) return f; else { boolean success = f.createNewFile(); if (success) { System.out.println("File did not exist and was created " + HomePath); // File did not exist and was created } else { System.out.println("File already exists " + HomePath); // File already exists } } } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println("Maybe try a new directory. • Servlet response wrapper has encoding problem

    - by John O
    A servlet response wrapper is being used in a Servlet Filter. The idea is that the response is manipulated, with a 'nonce' value being injected into forms, as part of defence against CSRF attacks. The web app is using UTF-8 everywhere. When the Servlet Filter is absent, no problems. When the filter is added, encoding issues occur. (It seems as if the response is reverting to 8859-1.) The guts of the code : final class CsrfResponseWrapper extends AbstractResponseWrapper { ... byte[] modifyResponse(byte[] aInputResponse){ ... String originalInput = new String(aInputResponse, encoding); String modifiedResult = addHiddenParamToPostedForms(originalInput); result = modifiedResult.getBytes(encoding); ... } ... } As I understand it, the transition between byte-land and String-land should specify an encoding. That is done here, as you can see, in two places. The value of the 'encoding' variable is 'UTF-8'; the alteration of the String itself is standard string manipulation (with a regex), and never specifies an encoding (addHiddenParamToPostedForms). Where am I in error about the encoding? EDIT: Here is the base class (sorry it's rather long): package hirondelle.web4j.security; import javax.servlet.ServletOutputStream; import javax.servlet.ServletResponse; import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse; import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponseWrapper; import java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream; import java.io.IOException; import java.io.PrintWriter; /** Abstract Base Class for altering response content. For now, keep package-private.) */ abstract class AbstractResponseWrapper extends HttpServletResponseWrapper { AbstractResponseWrapper(ServletResponse aServletResponse) throws IOException { super((HttpServletResponse)aServletResponse); fOutputStream = new ModifiedOutputStream(aServletResponse.getOutputStream()); fWriter = new PrintWriter(fOutputStream); } /** Return the modified response. */ abstract byte[] modifyResponse(byte[] aInputResponse); /** Standard servlet method. */ public final ServletOutputStream getOutputStream() { //fLogger.fine("Modified Response : Getting output stream."); if ( fWriterReturned ) { throw new IllegalStateException(); } fOutputStreamReturned = true; return fOutputStream; } /** Standard servlet method. */ public final PrintWriter getWriter() { //fLogger.fine("Modified Response : Getting writer."); if ( fOutputStreamReturned ) { throw new IllegalStateException(); } fWriterReturned = true; return fWriter; } // PRIVATE /* Well-behaved servlets return either an OutputStream or a PrintWriter, but not both. */ private PrintWriter fWriter; private ModifiedOutputStream fOutputStream; /* These items are used to implement conformance to the javadoc for ServletResponse, regarding exceptions being thrown. */ private boolean fWriterReturned; private boolean fOutputStreamReturned; /** Modified low level output stream. */ private class ModifiedOutputStream extends ServletOutputStream { public ModifiedOutputStream(ServletOutputStream aOutputStream) { fServletOutputStream = aOutputStream; fBuffer = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); } /** Must be implemented to make this class concrete. */ public void write(int aByte) { fBuffer.write(aByte); } public void close() throws IOException { if ( !fIsClosed ){ processStream(); fServletOutputStream.close(); fIsClosed = true; } } public void flush() throws IOException { if ( fBuffer.size() != 0 ){ if ( !fIsClosed ) { processStream(); fBuffer = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); } } } /** Perform the core processing, by calling the abstract method. */ public void processStream() throws IOException { fServletOutputStream.write(modifyResponse(fBuffer.toByteArray())); fServletOutputStream.flush(); } // PRIVATE // private ServletOutputStream fServletOutputStream; private ByteArrayOutputStream fBuffer; /** Tracks if this stream has been closed. */ private boolean fIsClosed = false; } }
