• Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24.   Say you started as SaaS service with freemium business model such 37Signals - Basecamp or Dropbox etc.. Is there an OSS license that says that you can use the source code etc.. but you cant release a SaaS based on it, esssentially released in good faith with non-compete expectations. e.g. if 37Signals released the source for highrise, basecamp etc.. someone could start 37signals4lesss.com (albeit once they built the same bit of provisioning logic) and damage the core business model.

• ubuntu 13.10 secondary monitor - doesn't redraw properly

  Hi I've just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on a Lenovo w350 and am having some issues with graphics driver. standard nouveau drivers work great on the laptop display but when I attach an external display it goes bad on the external monitor, seems it's not re-drawing properly. (Photo attached). I've tried other drivers but none of them detect the external monitor when connected.   I've been diving more and more into Node.js and hosting services like Heroku and Nodejitsu recently and have been trying to figure out how to best deploy database changes for postgres or mysql. There are a few migration projects under npm that I can see; however, all seem to be really buggy or just not work. I currently manage the Monarch migration project on npm, but it's currently buggy itself and my experiences developing such utilities are in other, more procedural, languages. So what do people use to deploy changes to their databases on these environments? What has worked for people? I'm looking for a better understanding of what the current situation/process looks like.

• Server 13.10 Install Hangs

  I'm trying to install Server 13.10 on some old hardware for testing (HP/Compaq dc5850, with Athlon X2 2.3 GHz dual core, 4GB RAM). The third screen is "Select Language" and the machine appears to hang. Ath e selection screen, the keyboard and mouse does not work. I integrity checked the CD and it checked out OK. I also performed a second ISO download and it cross checked with my initial download: $ md5 Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso MD5 (Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e MD5 (Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e I was able to install Server 12.04 on the same machine. The problem with 12.04 is the OpenStack packages are too old, and I wanted to try something with fresher packages. My problem appears similar to I cannot install Ubuntu Server 12.10. The Installer hangs at the language selection, but my ISOs appear to be good and the disc appears to be good. Any ideas?

  Hi, I have been doing Objective-C programming over the past few weeks, and I have learnt a lot. However, I see that there are other Web-companies offering services to consumers directly from their website that allow consumers to create their apps through a point and click and drag features without any code. Clearly they are more cost effective and fast than having a developer write an app. I was wondering if there are any advantages then of having a developer build an app for someone, other than the obvious advantage that its got a custom look and feel. Could someone please clarify, since Im new and would like to evaluate whether it is worthwhile spending time towards learning a whole new development environment when someone could just use a webservice to make an app for multiple platforms Thanks

  I am attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. After the Ubuntu splash screen, the computer throws up this error: sr 2:0:1:0: [sr0] Unhandled error code Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! PID: 1, comm: run-init Not Tainted 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu The computer hardware is as follows: Core 2 quad 9400, 8gb RAM, GTX 275, 3 Mech HD, 2 SSD, Win 7 install. I would like to dual boot Ubuntu on this computer if possible. I did try placing this disk in my laptop and booted successfully which leads me to believe the fault lies with the desktop. Under windows all hardware seems to work ok. Any ideas?

• How to use only intel graphics and power off radeon?

  I've been using Linux for quite a while in everyday computing and programming. But now i got this new laptop with amazing battery life on windows which runs pretty cool even while gaming. But for some reason on Ubuntu I get like 1/3 battery life and it gets hot even while browsing the web. I have the proprietary drivers for radeon, but I'm thinking about upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04, and I would like to know how can I use only the Intel graphics and have radeon always turned off? Since I do not need the discrete graphics on Ubuntu and I'm pretty sure my problem is related to the radeon sucking up my battery and generating heat. My laptop technical specifications are: Dell latitude 3540 Intel core i7 4500U (with Intel hd4400 graphics ) Ati Radeon HD 8850m with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM 8 GB DDR3L @1600mhz Toshiba 256gb SSD Ubuntu 12.4.3 If you need any additional info, please tell me :)

  i have a 3ghz amd 64 dual core am3 socket processor, asus mom board, 4GB ram, 8800GTS nividia video card with 500MB ram. installed kubuntu 12.04 and very laggy. select menu and 20 seconds later the menu pops up. i switched to classic menu and that seemed to help. what direction should i look first to get this running better? video perhaps? i had ubuntu 11.04 on this machine previously and had no problems with speed.

• Drupal node access for anonymous users

  I've never used Drupal before so this may be something that can easily be remedied, and that would be awesome. My problem is that a block, containing node information can't be viewed by anonymous users (unregisterd/not logged in), gives a "You are not authorized to access this content." message, but shows up for logged in users. The nodes that the block contains are events, so the block shows events for the next week. I've checked the users access settings but can't find anything that could possibly remedy this. I'm using drupal core 6.26, Event 6.x-2.x-dev, Event views 6.x-2.4 If anyone has any information, or solutions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

• Windows 8 on my new i7 Macbook Pro

  Using bootcamp I installed Windows 8 on my new Macbook Pro 15" (not a retina screen version), which has OS X 10.8.2, 2.6 Ghz Core i7 with 8 GB RAM.  I followed the simple procedure outlined here. The only problem I had was the wireless device driver wasn't provided. I had to find and download it myself. Even so it only provided 5G not 2G protocol support. I downloaded a Broadcom driver.   I was able to enable the Hyper-V features on Windows 8 and look forward to using VMs. So far so good :)

• Unable to boot from new SSD after installing from USB

  I'm using a new SSD with nothing on it. It's installed via USB drive, and boots from USB as well. While in Ubuntu I can see the SSD and other devices. When I install from the desktop (have tried from the boot screen as well), system restarts. It takes me to the boot screen, select boot from first hard disk, nothing, goes right back to boot screen. When I take the USB out, it hangs on "Verifing DMI." If I boot onto the USB I can see the correct files located in the SSD. I have a basic knowledge of computers. Give me any thing you think would help. No other OS's are loaded. Gigabyte ga-k8n-sli 1GB RAM AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core 3800+ OCZ SSD Agility 3 120GB
