• Ubuntu slows down even after cpu-intensive process is ended

  After a Skype video call, or the use of virtualbox, Ubuntu slows down to a crawl, even after the process is ended. Running htop reveals that processes that used little CPU before are now all using about 30% cpu (namely Compiz, Firefox, Python, and Skype, but I'm sure there are others), to the point where all my cores are at 99%. All I can do from here is restart. Any idea why this is happpening? I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on 3.7 GiB of memory, Intel® Core™ i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13GHz × 4, VESA: M92 graphics driver. Not sure why I'm running VESA, I installed fglrx, but I suppose that's a different question. Thanks in advance!

  I am new to linux and was wondering why launching applications is so slow. I've tried both Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit Computer Specs: Toshiba Satellite p755 CPU: Intel core i7-2670QM @2.20GHz Ram: 8 GB Using integrated intel hd 3000 graphics When I install the first thing I do is update, which takes about an hour or so. I would assume I'd be good after that, but when launching things like the firefox, system settings, thunderbird it takes a much much longer time than on Windows 7. Please help me.

• Install failing new hard drives

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu server 12.04 on my new hard drives but it seems to fail. Once past the option menu where is asked the partition to install the OS on, goes into a hold and no progress is shown afterwards. The hard disk I'm trying to install it on is: Western Digital WD20EARX The installation process hangs around 'installing core packages/installing the base system' . The CD comes through the test with being valid/ok. any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Is there a ppa or repository where we can update LibreOffice to version 3.6?

  On http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ there is only RPM version - when great majority of Desktop Linux users are using systems based on APT... ppa:libreoffice/ppa seems to be very outdated with version 3.5 It's frustating to see several fixes on Windows version and Ubuntu versions so outdated... People generally reply as: we don't update due to security/stability reasons, etc example 1 example 2 why don't you compile yourself ? For those easy answers, I generally reply: let me decide which version to use at my own risk. I just want to try a newer version and I trust on LibreOffice devs. I understand that update a core lib is very dangerous but Libreoffice is an user application and it don't just break the whole system. Why don't I compile ? Because I am a regular user and don't have time to learn it. I would love to have this time but unfortunately, I don't have. Red Hat/Fedora guys have the same concerns but they update their LibreOffices...

• What is the best way of testing Ubuntu?

  I'm a little confused as to whether I should install Ubuntu on its own partition on my hard drive, use VirtualBox or another virtualization package to install it, or use Wubi to install it directly on top of my current OS (Win 7). I definitely want to learn and use Ubuntu, so this is not just for playing around with it. Also, if I choose to partition, should I partition the hard drive myself or should I let the Ubuntu installation menu do it for me? I understand that I am going to need a main partition, for Ubuntu's core components, and also a swap partition. Then there is the option to add a partition for "home"- I don't understand what combination of these partitioning options I should choose, or whether it is better to partition in Windows before I install Ubuntu or just partition my hard drive when I install Ubuntu itself

• Admin user runs slower than the guest account

  My user is the Admin, it runs fine, not bugs or anything, I used Ubuntu Tweak for a few things like logging options and the sidebar and Unity Tweak for hotcornes and minimize window and that's about it. My second user (for my mother) is faster. I don't know how or why. Let me know what I need to enter on the terminal to give you more info, if you think it's normal also let me know.   I am developing a web app and I have currently written the entire website in html/js/css and on the backend I have servlets that host some RESTFUL services. All the presentation logic is done through getting json objects and modifying the view through javascript. The application is essentially a search engine, but it will have user accounts with different roles. I've been researching some frameworks such as Play and Spring. I'm fairly new to web development, so I was wondering what advantages using server side page rendering would provide? Is it: Speed? Easier development and workflow? Access to existing libraries?   After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

• Problem installing libva (VAAPI), vainfo fails

  I'm following a wiki on how to make VLC use the GPU in the Core i3 integrated graphics chipset, but I'm stuck at one of the first steps, installing VAAPI. I installed libva1 and vainfo by using "sudo apt-get install libva1 vainfo", but when I run vainfo it says libva: libva version 0.32.0 libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0 libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so libva: va_openDriver() returns -1 vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit It should say VAProfileH264High : VAEntrypointVLD VAProfileVC1Advanced : VAEntrypointVLD according to the wiki. /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so doesn't exist in my system, but I installed libva1 with apt-get.

For example I have a hotkey which executes: bk_starts_or_brings.bash 'Konsole' konsole On updating to Quantal -- it stops to work: if I call that key -- it searches bk_starts_or_brings.bash 'Konsole' konsole in google in default web-browser. I tried: sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs dh-make dkms execstack dh-modaliases fakeroot libqtgui4 When I start the command from konsole -- it works as expected, but when I call it with khotkey -- it doesn't. I guess someone shadows my keybiding. Or some daemon is not run on startup.

• usb stop working

  I'm using Xubuntu 12.04 on a 64 bit Intel core duo laptop and the 3 USB 3.0 ports stopped working if I do not use the mouse. I updated the kernel to 3.9 but the bug persists. I googled too much and the few reponses I got cannot fixed this. The only solution is shuting down, unplugging and then plugging them back, then all works fine. But after half an hour or two days the bug reappears. How can I solve this? Thanks and excuse my poor english.

• Network doesn't work after upgrading to 13.10

  I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, and a number of things stopped working. Most importantly, I don't have internet access anymore. When I go to the network settings, I receive the following error: The system network services are not compatible with this version. The only settings that show up in the network settings are the proxy settings. I tried sudo service network-manager start and sudo service network-manager restart, but it told me the service was already running. In addition, the menu bar is missing all of the indicators (such as keyboard layout, sound, network, clock, and the gear icon). Is this related or a separate issue?

  I just want to ask.. How to dual boot ubuntu 13.10 x64 with windows 8 x64 (non UEFI installation)? And can I use default windows 8 grub? Because I like it so much. Just search for the answer (almost) anywhere but find no answer. I am using ASUS A46CB with Core i3 processor. Thank you for your help.. :) P.S. : I have 3 primary partition (that detected in windows 8 explorer) with MBR partition style
