  I'm beginning development of a website and a high priority is for it to be extremely optimized, quick responses, etc. There will ultimately end up being large amounts of rows in the main tables (millions), so scalability is also important. It will need to use a database on the back-end for data storage and my web hosting service supports either MySQL or Sql Server. This website will be developed with .NET ASP.NET MVC with NHibernate (hopefully it can run in medium trust mode, as that is a requirement of my web hosting and reflection requirements of NHibernate may be problematic, maybe someone has a comment on this too). I'd also prefer to use the database that will require the least attention in regards to management. I don't want to have to be a DBA here. :) I wanted to through this topic out to the public to see what the community thinks? So MySQL or Sql Server, generally, which one would be better to use?

• What port is my SQL2008 instance running on?

  Check out this pic of my SQL 2008 Management Configuration screen for TCP: I need to know what port I am running on. Base on this previous post, I don't believe that it is 1433, which I guess is the default. When I check my port number in SQL Config Mgr., it is blank. Does this suggest a default port? Note that I have multiple SQL Server instance on the db server. 1 2000 instance and two 2008 instances. I want to know the port of the 2008b instance. Can you help?

• Connecting Ingres from C

  I need to connect to an Ingres supplied demodb through OpenAPI, both Ingres and C application running on windows. What i have done: Created a "node" in the Ingres Network Utility named "usernode". created user accounts in the Ingres installation (named "user" password "user") and in the Windows user management (the same creds.) Granted necessary privileges to the user in the database. In C code i have called IIapi_connect() function with an IIAPI_CONNPARM structure. Used members: co_target = "usernode::demodb", co_username = "user", co_password = "user" But IIapi_connect() call returns an error: "User provided a vnode as part of the database name (vnode::dbname), but connection information for that vnode is missing. Enter connection information for the vnode using NETUTIL." Anybody knows something that is a weird concept "node"? What are the minimum steps (in the database administration and the function parameters passing) necessary for the successful connect?

  What are the pros/cons from a performance/indexing/data management perspective of creating a one-to-one relationship between tables using the primary key on the child as foreign key, versus a pure surrogate primary key on the child? • How do I list all non-system stored procedures?

  I want to create a query to list of all user defined stored procedures, excluding the ones that are system stored procedures, considering that: Checking the name like "sp_" doesn't work because there are user stored procedures that start with "sp_". Checking the property is_ms_shipped doesn't work because there are system stored procedures that have that flag = 0, for example: sp_alterdiagram (it is not MSShipped but appears under System Stored Procedures in SQL Server Management Studio). There must be a property, or a flag somewhere since you can see the "System Stored Procedures" in a separate folder in SQL 2005. Does anyone know?   scenerio:- a database server running sql server 2005 and sql server management studio 2005 express editions a web server running IIS 5.0v using windows xp pro. two other computer having windows xp and windows 98 i have a linksys router which i use to access point for wireless (laptop) there are 5 sockets behind it four for clients and one for internet. i would like to setup a LAN- something like a private hosting area with two clients. would should i do? where to connect what and what would the changes in settnigs be. right now it uses dhcp or something to assign ips. where will the webserver be attached to the internet socket? where will the db server be attached? any guide, links, help thank you

• RPC Fails but passing in SQL Man. Studios works

  I am calling a stored procedure from a web service in an ASP.Net application. And until a few days ago, all was well. However now when i call it I get an error saying The timeout period elapsed prior to the completion of the operation or the server could not be reached. However when i would run SQL SERVER PROFILER, I could see that the call was getting to the database, but was timing out. I then copied the statement being executed found at the bottom of the Profiler and pasted it into Management Studio and executed it and it finishes in about 7 seconds.. This runs just fine on our production server. It seems to be similar to this question: SELECT DISTINCT not working in .NET application, but works in SQL Mgmt Studio but I see no answer.

• Best way to auto-restore a database every hour

  I have a demo site where anyone can login and test a management interface. Every hour I would like to flush all the data in the SQL 2008 Database and restore it from the original. Red Gate Software has some awesome tools for this, however they are beyond my budget right now. Could I simply make a backup copy of the database's data file, then have a c# console app that deletes it and copies over the original. Then I can have a windows schedule task to run the .exe every hour. It's simple and free... would this work? I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Web edition I understand that Red Gate Software is technically better because I can set it to analyze the db and only update the records that were altered, and the approach I have above is like a "sledge hammer".

  Hi guys, I've built a web application which basically logs work that has been done upon projects plus maintain resources used etc. What I need now is to set it up so that projects can be billed. Billed such that - each task that has been undertaken in a project is regarded as a billable service. Instead of building my own invoicing system and accounts management system I was wondering if there was any standard data format i.e in xml DTD or so to which I could set up the information so it could be imported by a third party accounting system for billing - or if not then what is the best way to accomplish this. I need to integrate invoicing capabilities somehow - better if its third party as I don't wish to have to go through building an entire accounting system.

• Weird compatibility problem with .Net 3.5 and 4.0 assemblies (NATUPnPLib)

  I'm having trouble getting NATUPnP 1.0 Type Library to work with Framework 3.5 in Visual Studio 2010. If I use .Net 4.0, it works just fine, but with .Net 3.5, NATUPNPLib's namespace looks excactly like NETCONLib's. For example this Port Forwarding Management Application sample from this site: http://pietschsoft.com/post/2009/02/05/NET-Framework-Communicate-through-NAT-Router-via-UPnP.aspx ..is using .Net 3.5, but I can't get it to compile in Visual Studio 2010 unless I change it to .Net 4.0. I haven't tried, but I bet in Visual Studio 2008 there would be no problems.

  I am trying to automate the process of creating an Exchange Mailbox for AD users and am running into an issue. When calling the CreateMailbox method I am receiving the error "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component". I have installed and referenced the Exchange Management Tools and am using impersonation for permissions.   Hi, I'm building a Wordpress plugin and I added a menu page which serves for management of "Vendor" entities that are kinda similar to the existing User entities. I have a list page similar to Users List, with Edit button for every record and when I click on the "Edit" button I should be taken to the "Edit Vendor" (which does not have its submenu item in the admin menu) page for that vendor. Everything is stored in the "plugins/wp_vendors" folder. Question: What URL should I use for opening that Edit page? How should a slug be registered for the Edit Vendor page? PS. Vendor List is added to the admin menu with add_menu_page('Vendors', 'Vendors', 8, 'C:\wordpress\wp-content\plugins\wp-vendors\vendors-list.php'); And I can open the List page with http://localhost/wp-admin/admin.php?page=wp-vendors/vendors-list.php Can anyone help me on this?

• Combining a web application with another (larger).

  I'm writing a web app, initially meant to be stand-alone--it's essentially a survey with user-management/authentication built on Codeigniter. The company I'm doing this for wants to merge it with their main system so that it acts like a feature, or a sub-app of their website. What is the best thing for me to do? I think I could do one of two things: Finish my application, as I had planned to initially, and let them handle the merging.It would probably save me a headache. Stop where I am in development, and migrate my authentication system to theirs, migrate the payment system to use theirs, and then finish the app. In your opinion, or experience, what is the best thing to do?

  What management tools (open source or otherwise) are there to track the location of data, the services that deliver/use that data and the services themselves. If you believe the snake oil a combination of DB, ESB and SOA will deliver anything anywhere, but how do you know what's where. BTW I'm not interested at the WSDL level, I'm thinking of a tool that the users/BA community would populate and use. A combination of SOA and Database is now the bedrock of most applications, however what used to be called Data Dictionaries, and would now be Service Catalogues? or MetaData repositories still seem to live in purely DataCentric world.

  I have an Outlook 2007 Add-in in VSTO 2005 SE that allows users to save e-mails into our document management system. From within our system users are able to open e-mails they have previously saved. However, when doing so I need to try and prevent them from saving them again. I am trying to figure out how to determine if the Mailitem being opened is coming from the Outlook e-mail client or from an external source. I know that normally the EntryId Property of the Mailitem is null or empty string when a Mailitem has not been previously saved in Outlook, however, it seems like when a Mailitem is being opened from within our system the EntryID is not null.

  I am developing a Delphi documents management application, so somehow I am giving the user some functionality similar to windows explorer. Currently I am using imagelists where I manually maintain the icons (like one for pdf, one for xls, ...) and when I need to display an icon for a filetype that I don't explicitly support I have a generic icon. Is there a way to retrieve the icon used by windows, like MyTImage := GiveMeDefaultIconForExtension('pdf'); In Vista and Seven this should be an icon with multiple resolutions I think. Moreover I would like to know if there is a way to get the preview used by windows explorer. For example windows explorer creates a small thumbnail for a pdf document for example, and displays it when the user chooses to view "big icons". Is there a way to retrieve that preview? I have quite a bit of experience with RoR, but don't have that many starting from scratch with only a vision experiences and would appreciate the wisdom of others who've been there. • CLI design and implementation?

  I am developing a time management tool for my personal use. I prefer using keyboard over mouse, and on the interface have a general purpose text box which will act like a command line. I have just started thinking about what commands I need, what to use for the command names, how to pass in switches and parameters, and so forth. I wonder if some of you have come across a good read along these lines; something that describes the choices you have for designing a cli, and how those affect the complexity of the interpreter, and extendability of the commands. It makes no difference if the descriptions are language-specific or in general terms. However, my implementation will be with javascript. Thank you.
