• Speed up your Silverlight Debugging for large projects

  I'm working on a 5+ year old ASP.NET project that has 74+ projects and we've been adding new Silverlight applications to run in the ASP.NET page islands. My machine at work isn't the most powerful, so I find myself waiting a lot for the whole thing to build. I'm using Visual Studio 2010, so that takes up a lot of resources as well. This causes me to get distracted and I start looking at the news... I need to combat that more :-). I can't get a new machine, that's up to someone else, so I've found a few tricks to help. 1. Only build the Silverlight project you're working with. This will build all referenced projects (you can see these by right clicking and clicking Project Dependencies) and package a new XAP (you can see all the actions in your output build window). Then refresh your page with the Silverlight app and it's up-to-date. 2. I was working with a co-worker (thanks Jordan) who was using the the Debug -> attach to processes window. In the Attach to: row there is a "Select..." button. In the dialog, click "Debug these code types:" and select Silverlight. Hit ok. Then all you need to do is find your process (you might need to click the refresh button). I'm usually debugging in IE, so I select the first one and push "i" on the keyboard. That brings me to the IE windows open. Find the one with type of Silverlight, x86. It is usually directly above one with type of x86 that has the page title for "title". Click attach and watch your output window spit out messages about loading debug symbols and your breakpoints enabled (if this doesn't happen you chose the wrong process, hit stop and try again). Now you can debug the client code as normal, server code requires a full F5 or attaching to the correct process. To improve this even further, bind the menu item to a key stroke. I chose ctrl + x, x. (Tools -> Options -> Keyboard, search for Debug.AttachToProcess, set the shortcut keys globaly and assign). Most of the time I build the project, then hit ctrl + x, x then i, then enter and I'm debugging. The process I want is usually the first IE in the list.

• Creating a Yes/No MessageBox in a NuGet install/uninstall script

  Sometimes getting a little feedback during the install/uninstall process of a NuGet package could be really useful. Instead of accounting for all possible ways to install your NuGet package for every user, you can simplify the installation by clarifying with the user what they want. This example shows how to generate a windows yes/no message box to get input from the user in the PowerShell install or uninstall script. We’ll use the prompt on the uninstall to confirm if the user wants to delete a custom setting that the initial install placed in their configuration.  Obviously you could use the prompt in any way you want. The objects of the message box are generated similar to the controls in the code behind of a WinForm. • Access to Salesforce.com Data Through Tableau Desktop

  This article will explain how to connect to any of the RSSBus OData Connectors with Tableau's business intelligence tool. While the example uses the Salesforce Connector, the same process can be followed for any of the OData Connectors. Step 1: Download and install both the Salesforce Connector from RSSBus and Tableau Desktop from Tableau. Step 2: Next you will want to configure the Salesforce Connector to connect with your Salesforce.com account. If you browse to the Help tab in the Salesforce Connector application, there is a link to the Getting Started Guide which will walk you through setting up the Salesforce Connector. Step 3: Once you have successfully configured the Salesforce Connector application, you will want to open Tableau and select the Connect to data option at the top left of the window. Step 4: Here you will click on the option labeled OData under the section labeled On a server. Step 5: A new pop up will appear. The box under Step 1 of the pop-up must contain the OData URL of the Salesforce Connector table. You can find this by clicking on the Settings tab of the Salesforce Connector. Once you have found the OData entry URL, you will need to append the table name that you want Tableau to connect with to the OData entry URL. In this example, we will connect to the Account table. Thus, the URL we enter will be: http://localhost:8181/sfconnector/data/conn/odata.rsc/Account. You will also need to add authentication options in this step. To do this, select the Use a Username and Password option in Step 2 of the pop-up and enter the Username and Password of the user who has access to the Salesforce Connector. When you are done, click the Connect button in Step 3 of the pop-up. Step 6: When the connection to the Salesforce Connector is successful, give the connection a name and click the OK button. Step 7: The table columns will be listed on the left side under the Dimensions section of the workspace. Step 8: To view your Salesforce.com data, you can right click under the table name in the Data section at the top left of the dashboard and select the View Data option. Your Saleforce.com data will appear in Tableau.

• Booting problem with 12.04

  i do have a 12.04 ubuntu on my notebook , but i do have a problem with it. I cannot boot , if i dont press anything then there is a black screen , and it does not boot. If i press the space button , or any other key , for mutlitples times , like 20 or 25 times or more then it's boot in seconds , and normally. How can i resolve this? Thanks Ps:I do not have a problem with bios as it's already booting on first for the hard drive

• Play Framework Plugin for NetBeans IDE (Part 2)

  After I published part 1 of this series, the first external contribution (i.e., not by me) to the NetBeans plugin for Play Framework 2 was committed today. Yann D'Isanto added support for creating new Play projects: That completely solves a problem I was working on, in a different way altogether. I was working on creating a new wizard that would call "play new" on the command line and pass into the command line the entered name and application type (1 for Java and 2 for Scala). However, Yann's solution is better, at least in the sense in that it works, as opposed to mine which didn't, because of problems I continually had with the command line, since one needs to press Enter multiple times on the Play command line when creating new projects, which I wasn't able to simulate in my new wizard. Yann's approach is simply to follow the approach taken in the Project Type Module Tutorial, which explains how to register a project sample in the IDE. I was inspired by Yann's contribution, especially when he mentioned that one needs to build Play projects on the command line. So, I added a new menu item on the right-click of a project for building Play projects, which simply passes "play compile" to the command line for the current project: Via the IDE's main menu bar, you can also Build and Run the application, though the code for the Clean function needs to be added still, which would be a cool thing for anyone out there to add, by using all the existing code and then passing "play clean compile" to the command line. Something else that Yann added is an Options Window extension, thanks to the Options Window Module Tutorial, for registering the Play installation, which is a step forward from my hard coded solution. I changed things slightly so that, when Build or Run are selected, without a Play installation being defined, the Options window opens, displaying the tab that Yann created, shown below. Notice that there's no Browse button, which would be a simple next step for anyone else to contribute. A small tip is to use the FileChooserBuilder from the NetBeans IDE APIs when working on the Browse button: Looking forward to more contributions to the Play Framework 2 plugin for NetBeans IDE. • xubuntu app menu on wrong side of screen

  I am using Xubuntu 12.04, with a dual monitor setup (with the nvidia driver xinerama enabled). The top panel is spanned acros the two monitors. This works quite fine, except for one thing. When I click the little Application Menu button on my left screen, the application menu opens on the top right corner of the left screen. This is quite annoying, I fiddled in the panel prefs but could not fix this. Any thoughts?

  I have several keyboard entry languages set up, and can easily select the one I want to use from the indicator menu. Once a language is chosen, the menu item "Keyboard Layout Chart" shows me what key generates what. How do I print the keyboard layout chart in Ubuntu 14.04? There is no Print button on the chart and there is no menu associated with the layout chart window. Perhaps this is a but in 14.04?

I know only the rectangle solution where u can use the positions + the width/height but this dont work for that because clicks will be detected at the transparent pixels. I heard of pixel-perfect collision is it the right way for this? It would be great if someone can give me a example for such a solution or other.

  tried the workaround posted here How to enable hibernation? but not even after rebooting, updating grub or kilall unity-panel-service commands do reset unity but no hibernation is available on "start" button. when sudoedit file saves as /vm etc etc, tried chaging this name to the /etc/polkit loclauth etc etc but wouldnt let me save the file there must be doing something wrong, because I browse to /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d and there are no files there

  I'm trying to set up a dual monitor with my laptop (Dell XPS L502X) and a monitor that I recently bought (Dell U2312HM). The cable are alright, because I tried this on Windows and all is fine. In Ubuntu 12.10 doesn't work. If I go to System Settings-Displays, button Detect Displays doesn't do anything. I may also say that I use Bumblebee, and my sudo nvidia-settings command only shows a windows with only nvidia-setting Configuration option.

In the past 2 days there have been 185 pledges signed but only 63 page views in GA. I trust that they are unique pledges and not just people adding multiple fake names and entering it. Is there anyway to get a better report from Google Analytics?

• A better way to organize your Silverlight Code Snippets.

  I hate re-writing code. I also hate it when I find a great code snippet on the web and forget to bookmark it or it gets lost in my endless sea of bookmarks. So what do you do to get around this? This is the question that I was asking myself at the end of 2010. How can I get my Silverlight code organized? My requirements for a snippet manager were: Needs to be FREE. An easy way to view XAML/C# code behind together in one “view”. I wanted the ability to store the code snippets in cloud in case my HDD dies. Searchable Keywords to quickly find code snippets. I started looking for a snippet manager that would allow me to do just that and finally found Snippet Manager. Before going any further, I think that one of the most important things to note here is that this software supports 37 languages. It’s not just for Silverlight developers nor C# only guys. The software supports Java, SQL and even COBOL.   Below is a screenshot of the Snippet Manager that shows my Silverlight code snippet. You will notice that I have highlighted two sections. The top part is my XAML and the bottom is my C# code behind. I’ve included a sample below of my code snippets so that you can get an idea of how I organized it. Another thing that’s great about this software is that it supports plain text. I added some connection strings in the TEXT section below.  Once you have finished adding your code snippets, you can store them in the cloud. I created a FTP directory called “snippets” on my FTP Server and hit the upload button once I am finished adding my new codes snippets. This will allow me to use the code snippets on another computer with this application on my USB Key. See screenshots below: Enter your FTP credentials below: Hit the Uploads button on the Toolbar: Login in to your FTP Server and verify the following files are now on the FTP Server: Another great feature of the Snippet Manager is that you can also integrate this into VS2010 by clicking Tools –> External Tools: And setting up your External Screen to point to the Executable: You can now launch it by going to Tools –> Snippet Manager. If you want you could also a shortcut to launch the program with HotKeys. As you can see, this is a nice little program that includes everything needed to organize your code snippets very clean. I'm getting a message: The package is of bad quality (same as What is a "bad quality" package?) In the expanded section, the "error" states: E: google-chrome-stable: file-in-etc-not-marked-as-conffile etc/cron.daily/google-chrome Is it safe to click on the "Ignore and Install" button?

• Starting / Shutting down Problem

  i have ubuntu 12.04 installed on my laptop. There is the following starting/shutting down problem: When clicking the power button, the laptop starts for 1 second and after that abruptly shuts down. When starting again everything works normal. But after shutting down and starting again, the PC again has the same problem. This problem wasnt there when using Windows. What can I do?
