• Methodology for Documenting Existing Code Base

  I work as part of a team on an existing application that has no inline documentation, nor does it have technical documentation. As I've been working on various bug reports on the application, I've written a sort of breadcrumb trail for myself - bug numbers in various places so that the next developer can refer to that bug number to see what was going on. My question is thus: What is the most effecient method for documenting this code? Should I document as I touch the area (the virus method, if you will), or should I document from each section on its own, and not follow paths that branch out into other areas of the application? Should I insert inline comments where none previously existed (with the fear that I may end up incorrectly identifying what the code does)? What method would you use to accurately and quickly document a rather large application that has no existing inline documentation, nor inline references to external documentation?

  I noticed that I have a peculiar habit of finishing every line with a space. It carries over from my prose writing where a paragraph can have multiple sentences and so it is very common to follow a period with a space, and I end up doing that automatically for every period (or when it comes to programming- semicolon). It started out as something automatic, but I'm so used to this by now that if I miss the space it actually bothers me and I end up returning to that line to input it. What are some of your programming idiosyncrasies?

• How can I recover from a frozen app when connecting over VNC

  I have a htpc running 10.10. It has no keyboard or mouse attached, so I connect over vnc for administration and manual tasks. This usually works fine but every so often an app running in fullscreen mode crashes. All I want to be able to do is kill this app from VNC. Is there a keyboard shortcut to do this that will preserve the VNC connection? If I use CTRL + ALT + F1, I see the terminal but can no longer control it from VNC. Trying to return to the desktop doesn't work either? Any easy process I can follow?

  I am starting an adwords campaigns and I will measure conversion rates using the Adwords conversion tracking pixel. Conversion might be account creation or a concrete sale. As it will be a test campaign to have some insights on CTR, CR, etc... on the future, I am likely to try several configurations. two differents ads with different landing URL and messages : one with a focus on the product / the other will contains a discount embedded in the URL 4 differents groups/thematics of keywords I guess I have to build 4 ads groups based on the keywords 2 ads with the different messages assign the two ads to each ads groups follow the campaign precisely in the ads tabs where I can see the effectiveness of each Ads per Ads Groups (for a total of 8 lines of reporting) Am I right ? • Resize broswer window below 400px on OS X

  Resizing Firefox windows (by dragging) works fine, up until the window is about 400 px wide, at which point the width of the web page content cease to follow the window with. I'm pretty sure it's not a CSS issue, and the same thing goes for Chrome and Safari as well (they won't even let me resize the window < 400 px wide). I can't understand where this limitation comes from. Is it a setting in the browser? A bug? A limitation of the OS?

  In many entertainment professions there suggestions, loose rules, or general frameworks one follows that appeal to humans in one way or another. For instance, many movies and books follow the monomyth. In video games I find many types of games that attract people in different ways. Some are addicted to facebook gem matching games. Others can't get enough of FPS games. Once in awhile, though, you find a game that seems to transcend stereotypes and appeals almost immediately to everyone that plays it. For instance, Plants Versus Zombies seems to have a very, very large demographic of players. There are other games similar in reach. I'm curious what books, blogs, etc there are that explore these game types and styles, and tries to suss out one or more popular frameworks/styles that satisfy people, while keeping them coming back for more.

• My Generation Drivers DropdownList Empty

  I just installed MyGeneration 1.3.1 on my Windows Vista, and when I try to setup the default settings there are no drivers to select from. but it's OK in my Windows XP machine. At last I got the answers from search engine, it is caused by multi .Net Frameworks coexist and MyMeta.dll is registered by the .Net v2.0 while it should be registered with the .Net v4.0. So we have to manually register the dll. Please follow these steps: 1. Run Visual Studio Command Prompt (2010) with "Run as Administrator". 2. Enter the command "regasm.exe "C:\Program Files\MyGeneration13\MyMeta.dll" /tlb: MyMeta.tlb" 3. Exit Command Prompt when successfully registered. 4.   I got the Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit edition and i used Unetbootin to write the ISO to a usb stick.After that i tried to boot from the stick,having changed the BIOS boot settings,and when the first interface shows up with the choices of istallation,whatever choice i select i got the message"invalid or corrupt kernel image".I use a netbook with windows 7 on it.I tried different usb sticks but same again.I also tried Universal USB installer instead of Unetbootin but same again.Any idea of what happens?I am using ASUS 1000H.The USB doesn't work in one more PC i tried to,but i also tried a second USB to both of the two computers and same again. I downloaded the ISO image once again and follow the same procedure but same again

  I am looking to get the following - Basic code review to make sure they follow the guidelines imposed. Security code analysis to make sure there are no loopholes. No performance bottlenecks by doing a load test etc. We have lot of code coming in from third parties and is becoming laborious to manage code reviews and hence looking to see if others employ such practices. I understand that it may be a concern for some and would raise the question "Well, who is going to make sure the agency is doing their job right?" But basically I am just looking for a third party who can hold all vendor code to the same standards.

• Why won't my install on Macbook work?

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Macbook. The CD drive is broken, so I am going from a USB flash drive I created. I can get it to "Try Ubuntu" perfectly fine, as a matter of fact I'm using it right now. However, I really want to install. Everything is partitioned, rEFIt is installed. I run the installer and I follow the guide at Apple Intel Installation I get to the install part of the installer, and after running it ends with a fatal grub error. Anyone know how to get past this? I feel like it has something to do with the fact that I don't get the last dialog box of the installer with the "advanced" tab used in the guide. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I also went into the /mnt/hgfs folder and saw nothing there. • can you have too many dto/bo - mapping method

  I have a windows service, 2 web services and a web interface that need to follow the same path (data wise). So I came up with two ways of creating my solution. My concern is the fact that the UI/WS/etc will have their own kind of DTO (let's say the model in ASP.Net MVC) that should be mapped to a DTO so the SL can then map it to a BO then mapping it to the proper EF6 DTO so that I can save it in a database. So I'm thinking of doing it this way to remove one level of mapping. Which one should I take? Or is there a 3rd solution?

And I suggest (strongly) that you also download the free Extension Pack from the same page... Brings USB 2.0 emulation and more!I upgraded the version on my Solaris Express (get that from : http://www.oracle.com/solaris/index.html and follow the Download Solaris Express link on the right) laptop (pfexec pkgrm SUNWvbox and then pfexec pkgadd -d the .pkg in the compressed archive file, and install the extensions from the VBox GUI once it's launched). If you are on an old fashion OS without proper RBAC, replace pfexec by sudo. Which you can also do on Solaris if you really want to. :)I tell you, it's Christmas, for sure!Merry VBox!Gilles.

• Bug Tracking Etiquette - Necromancy or Duplicate?

  I came across a really old (2+ years) feature request issue in a bug tracker for an open source project that was marked as "resolved (won't fix)" due to the lack of tools required to make the requested enhancement. In the time elapsed since that determination was made, new tools have been developed that would allow it to be resolved, and I'd like to bring that to the attention of the community for that application. However, I'm not sure as to what the generally accepted etiquette is for bug tracking in cases like this. Obviously, if the system explicitly states to not duplicate and will actively mark new items as duplicates (much in the way the SE sites do), then the answer would be to follow what the system says. But what about when the system doesn't explicitly say that, or a new user can't easily find a place that says with the system's preference is? Is it generally considered better to err on the side of duplication or necromancy? Does this differ depending on whether it's a bug or a feature request?

• Could someone help me understand SQL TDE Database encryption?

  I don't quite follow how it works. According to the MSDN Article there is a big hierarchy of keys protecting other keys and passwords. At some point the database is encrypted. You query the database which is encrypted, and it works seamlessly. If you're able to simply connect to the database as normal and not have to worry about any of the encryption from a developer point of view, how exactly is it secure? Surely anyone can simply connect and do select * from x and the data is revealed. Sorry my question is a bit scattered, I am just very confused by the article.

  It seems a bit of a controversial subject to document everything, including the "JavaBean" syntax of getters and setters for fields: People say its needlessly long and repetitive breaking DRY (don't repeat yourself), that the naming convention should explain everything, and it clutters code/documentation. Sometimes those arguments work. But other times, you end up with this: Above is common to open source projects that do boldly follow those principles. Your left with entirely useless documentation. That doesn't explain anything about whats going on underneath, the possible effects, or even what the expected value is (could it be null or never null? I don't know, the Javadoc doesn't tell me). So when should I document? Do I document everything even if it occasionally clutters code? Or do I document nothing since in my eyes its "obvious"?

  Do large corporations and product companies follow any standard quality models/processes at all? For example, I have seen that many large organizations have proprietary processes in IT and software development. Back in the days (even before Motorola's Iridium project,) I remember many IT companies scampering for SEI-CMM certification. Do any of the Fortune 500 company try to adopt these quality processes? In my limited experience I have not seen them undergoing audits for adherence to processes. Most of the audits are either financial, or issues pertaining to legalities. Am I just being ignorant, or is this true? If true, how stringently do the companies adhere to the processes?
