• Recording Interfaces for OS X that are supported/work well?

  For os x, I would like to know what other audio production/music recording interface type products people have found to work well with os x? I do not want to know about stuff that only works. I want to know about solid products that work well and are supported well by the company when issues arise. I for example have a M-Audio Firewire Solo recording interface. I have found M-Audio to be a company with great mac support for their products and they integrate well with os x features and apple software. Clarification: I am wondering about the recording interfaces themselves, as in the hardware, that are compatible with os x and supported/work/integrate well.

• Static noise coming from my laptop

  Replaced motherboard; speakers; put in an additional fan; but this did not stop the static noise. This was done by inhouse tech. support from Sony. If i turn my speakers mute; the sound is still there! Can't hear it through headphones. I was told it is feedback noise! Now I'm suppose to send my $2,000.00 computer through the mail to get fixed? I'm terrified it'll come back in terrible condition during the travel time? Help?

• Who should own exim4 under debian?

  Installed debian from DVD. And now I see exim4 is running owned by UID 107. There is no user 107 in my /etc/passwd. Same problem on another system (owned by UID 101), so I suspect this is a debian problem...? Running squeeze on both. So under debian, who should own the mail system? • Why does my general frame rate slow down to 40fps randomly?

  This has been bugging me for a while. Every once in a while, I find my computer to be sort of laggy and I thought it was because it was busy or something. However, I recently noticed that it wasn't any performance issue...I thought my computer was laggy because the frame rate slowed from 75fps right down to ~40 fps and caused very visible tearing. This is not rare. It happens many, many times a day. I have no idea what is happening...I have an AMD 5670 on Windows 7 32-bit by the way, and I've heard bad things about AMD's driver support. Could this be the problem? P.S. The frame rate slowdown is not just for games (I rarely play games, and have not played games in the time since I noticed this problem), it seems it's an issue for the entirety of Windows. I first noticed the tearing when I was moving around tabs in Google Chrome.

• how to make SFTP work on Windows

  What is the correct way to set up sshwindows for SSH key authentication? Does the user need to be created in Windows first or can a login be inserted into passwd without a Windows equivalent? I've searched on Google and have tried the tutorials and quick start guides. So far, exactly 0 have worked. None pointed out that to work in Windows 2008 R2, you need to change the properties of cygrunsrv.exe to "Windows XP SP3" compability mode to even get past the service startup "error 1067". Although it is running, no amount of configuration allowed me to log on to the SFTP server, even though I tried (from another machine): same user account added using "mkpasswd" + windows password same user account added using "mkpasswd" + public ssh key (added to /home/theuser/.ssh) On Windows 2003 R2 (a different attempt), the service would crash every time it started up. • Office features disabled in standalone Outlook

  I have Office 2007 basic suite installed on my computer. I installed Outlook 2010 from a volume license provided by our Email Server Provider. When creating a new email all of the Office features are disabled in the ribbon. This microsoft support article describes my issue, however I do not have Office installed as click and run. It seems to me that there should be a way to make outlook recognize the office suite already installed. The "add or remove features" dialogue accessed through programs and features from the control panel seems promising, however its only options for "office features" are run from computer, or install on 1st run. I can't seem to find any valid articles online that aren't just dealing with the click to run issue. I know that there are several people at my company with the same set up, installed the same way that have everything working fine. How can I get my standalone Outlook 2010 install to recognize the Office 2007 basic suite?

• Installing VirtIO drivers in Windows Server 2008

  We are running a Windows Server 2008 system as a "guest" on a Linux-KVM virtual server (SLES11, with VirtIO support). We have trouble with the system performance and this is possibly due to not using the VirtIO drivers. I don't have much experience with neither KVM not VirtIO. Just heard it this could be the reason for our problem. Questions: The install examples I just found are describing how to install the drivers during Windows setup. Is it possible to install the VirtIO drivers later? We have running software on that system and would like to avoid reinstalling/setup of all these. I already found a page describing how to sign the drivers, which seems to be needed. A good tutorial page (step by step instructions) would be nice. Is there anything like that out there?

• Dhcp clients fail after successful import of server to new machine (win2k3)

  I transfered the configs of a dhcp server from one server to another both running Windows Server 2003 R2 following http [://] support.microsoft.com/kb/325473. The new server has a statically configured ip(outside the scope) like the old one. Stopped the server on the old, and started up in the new server (authorized too) - but when I ipconfig /renew from a client its network interface fails with all 0.0.0.0 (or 169...*). I read somewhere I need to reconcile the scope to sync the new registry values ('ll try this tomorrow). What other troubleshooting steps can I take other than these (which didn't help)? Things work fine when the old server resurrects and the new one is taken down. The new server showed there was no requests for offer.

• Can Squid 2.7 proxy gzipped content

  We have a forward proxy for our network which is Squid 2.7. This is managed for us by a third party. We noticed recently that http requests going from our network to the web were having the Accept-Encoding header removed. This was resulting in all web traffic across our network (approx 8000+ PCs) being uncompressed even though the browsers and server on each end were capable. We have asked the third party to look into this and they have said it is because Squid 2.7 does not support compression. I understand this to be true but I was under the impression that the compression happened on the webserver rather than the proxy. So... Can Squid 2.7 proxy and/or cache content that is gzipped? If it can, how/why might it be configured such that the Accept-Encoding header is being removed?

• HP 4530s: Fan is Always On even When Laptop/CPU is Idle

  Just bought an HP 4530s from newegg. Laptop is great, but.. The FAN is always on. I did some googling, found it is a known problem, but no easily googlable solution. Tried to: Update BIOS to the latest Disable "CPU fan always on when plugged in" BIOS setting Installed Windows 7 Home (came with), Live CDed Ubuntu, Windows XP Spent 2 hours with horrible HP support Some other things that I can't already recall = spent too much time on it Laptop is not refundable (learned it the hard way, after the fact, by looking at the NEWEGG clever policy that is hidden in "details") I would really appreciate a workable solution / workaround / hack. The laptop is for my friend who will most likely be running Windows XP/7.

• Proccess of carrying out a BER Test

  I am subscribed to an ISP supplying a 3meg ADSL line. Lately (for the last 4 weeks) speeds have dropped from the usual average downstream speed of ~250kbps to just 0.14Mbps (according to speedtest.net) and employees are complaining about lack of access to the server. I have been calling customer support and logging calls for the last 3 weeks, but they have been unable to determine the source of the problem other carrying out a few bitstream tests and checking the DHCP renewal times. I am going to call back and suggest carrying out a BER test. What type of equipment is needed to carry out this test? I have access to a wide range of Cisco networking equipment. Other: We dont need a leased line as there are less than ten employees.

• iPad revocable vpn access

  I'm a programmer at my organization, but somehow got drafted into looking into some server stuff so forgive me of my ignorance: They want to give our sales people secure access to our internal sites using their iPads. This must be secure (obviously) but also revocable from the company's side (if someone quits they can no longer access our network). I see from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1288 that the iPad supports "RSA SecurID", "CRYPTOCard", and "Kerberos" authentication methods. Will one of these do what we need? Are there any major differences between them?

  I'm looking through google webmaster that my page is generating soft 404 errors (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/181708?hl=en) google says: We recommend that you always return a 404 (Not found) or a 410 (Gone) response code in response to a request for a non-existing page But I've got redirects set up that handle old pages to redirect to the proper new pages using a 301. The website links changed because of a use of a framework, which allows it to be more consistent, but the old pages till have links out there to these. Should I be worried about this? IS google penalizing the site for this? (Using IIS 8, Tomcat, CF10, Win)

Some of us (including I) have grown a bit impatient and have turned to scripting languages to fill the void. But, once closures have finally arrived to Java: how will they effect the Java Community? Will the advancement of VM-targetted scripting languages slow to a crawl, stay the same, or acclerate? Will people flock to the new closure syntax, thus turning Java code-bases all-around into more functionally structured implementations? Will we only see closures sprinkled in Java throughout? What will be the effect on tool/IDE support? How about performance? And finally, what will it mean for Java's continued adoption, as a language, compared with other languages that are rising in popularity? • windows 8 + Ubuntu dual boot

  I installed Ubuntu 13.04 on Windows 8. Yes I can access both of them, but the process is kind of long. In BIOS, EFI is for Windows 8, legacy support is for Ubuntu. If I choose EFI first, the startup just go straight to Win8 without offering me a choice. If I choose legacy first, the starup will offer me a choice between win8 and ubuntu. But I can only choose Ubuntu. If i choose win8, there will be a mistake(file missing under configuration). That is to say, every time i wanna switch to another OS, I have to go into BIOS and change the priority settings. I heard something about secure boot might be the cause of this situation. But the thing is that there is not even an option called "secure boot" in my BIOS, which means i cannot disable it. All I want is that an option menu appears everytime i turn on my computer so i can easily choose what OS I want for today. Can anyone help me plz? Thank you very much!!

• Planning office network [closed]

  I'm planning to setup my office network from scratch and want to ask professional opinions or tips. My office is connected to Internet with Cable connection (100Mb/s). The devices i would like to connect are VoIP Phone (RJ-11), TV (WiFi/LAN), 3 laptops (WiFi), a few smartphones (WiFi), iPad (WiFi), Kindle (WiFi) and, probably, MediaServer (WiFi/LAN). As you can see, the most load will be on WiFi connections (probably, even if TV supports WiFi it's better to connect it by LAN?). So, i need help to choose the best routers combination (or even one?) to support stable connections for all these devices and minimize the total number of routers/adapters. Any thoughts? Thank you!

• Network based on Netgear FVS318 extremely slow

  A network I maintain uses an FVS318 as a router, with a separate switch. Communication within the network is slow. Out to the internet is even slower. As it stands there is one patch from the FVS to the switch and no other devices directly connected to the FVS because any that are run so slowly they might as well not be connected to the network. Swapping in a bog-standard home router dramatically increases network speed, but that's not a viable solution because some of the enterprise features of the FVS are required. There are quite a few complaints about this on the Netgear forum, but Netgear support have not been forthcoming with any help - so I turn to you all: any ideas?

  Are there companies that sell new computers that support old ISA bus expansion cards? We have an aging computer running DOS that operates some machinery via an ISA interface board. Updated versions of this board (e.g. PCI, USB) are not available, and I am concerned about the long-term reliability of the 8+ year old computers we currently keep around as backups. If these newer ISA-capable machines exist, are there any general gotchas to be aware of in terms of compatibility with older expansion boards, ability to run DOS, etc.?

  Code completion in a JEditorPane: Unfortunately, a lot of this solution depends on the Java Editor support in the IDE. Therefore, to use it, in its current state, you'll need lots of Java Editor related JARs even though your own application probably doesn't include a Java Editor. A key thing one needs to do is implement the NetBeans Code Completion API, using the related tutorial in the NetBeans Platform Learning Trail, but register the CompletionProvider as follows: @MimeRegistration(mimeType = "text/x-dialog-binding", service = CompletionProvider.class) Then in the TopComponent, include this code, which will bind all the completion providers in the above location, i.e., text/x-dialog-binding, to the JEditorPane: EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/x-java"); jEditorPane1.setEditorKit(kit); FileObject fob; try {     fob = FileUtil.getConfigRoot().createData("tmp.java");     DataObject dob = DataObject.find(fob);     jEditorPane1.getDocument().putProperty(             Document.StreamDescriptionProperty,             dob);     DialogBinding.bindComponentToFile(fob, 0, 0, jEditorPane1);     jEditorPane1.setText("Egypt"); } catch (IOException ex) {     Exceptions.printStackTrace(ex); } Not a perfect solution, a bit hacky, with a high overheard, but a start nonetheless.   In November 2012, Oracle’s partner deal registration process will move to the Oracle Partner Store (OPS). During this time, OPS will become the single source for partners to register deals, obtain deal status, and place orders. What will partners need to do? 1. Request an OPS Account – If your company is new to OPS the first thing you need to do is request an account (if your company already has an OPS account, go to step 2). It’s important to have the person who will be managing your OPS account make this request as soon as possible. They will be set up as your company’s primary administrator. 2. Set-Up Users in OPS – Setup of users can start immediately, and will be handled by the primary OPS administrator at your company. The process is simple, but all existing users of Global PRM (Partner Relationship Management) deal registration will need to be set up in OPS before November 14, 2012.  3. Review/Action Any Registrations Pending Submission in PRM – Prior to November 14, 2012, all pending registrations should be submitted in the existing PRM system. It is important that this step is complete so registrations will not need to be re-entered when the system is moved to OPS on November 17, 2012. Registrations pending submission are easily identified on the registration listing screen with either “Incomplete” or “Returned to Partner” in the status column.  4. Attend Training – Oracle will offer multiple VAD and VAR training sessions beginning October 29, 2012. It is recommended that all users attend one of these important sessions.  Detailed instructions on each of these tasks can be found on the OPS Information Page. • Advantages of Scala vs. Groovy with JAVA EE 6 Applications.

  Please let me first emphasize that I am not looking for flare wars. I just want advices from people who have real experiences. I started learning JAVA EE 6 as real newbie and am having had time choosing what tools to use. First problem is what is the advantage of using Scala vs. Groovy with Java EE 6 apps over Java? I've seen on some blogs people mentioning you gonna write less code but as a newbie I don't know what other advantages and disadvantages are there. Second problem is Netbeans 6.9 or Helios 3.6.1? I realized that with eclipse I can easily mix EE 6 applications with Groovy or Scala without any problems (I only did this by displaying a String message from Scala and Groovy classes.). With Netbeans the only I can think of is having separate Java project libraries and using the jars in my web app. But also realize to the extent of my little knowledge Netbeans has better support for Java EE 6. Please need your expert advice. Thanks.

• How can we implement network search for Windows AND OS X clients?

  We have a network with Windows 7 and OS X (10.5 and 10.6) computers. Our servers run on Windows Server 2003 (1 Small Business Server, 2 Standard). We need to be able to search through about 15.000 - 30.000 documents in our archives. The best solution would be if users can search directly from the Windows menu (on Windows 7) or the Spotlight menu (on OS X 10.5 and 10.6). Also good would be if users can search directly from the search bar in their browsers, or by first visiting a site with the search form. In case the users search through the browser, it's important they they are able to open a file in the search results just by clicking on it. I have tested Microsoft Search Server Express, but it doesn't meet the requirements (no OS X support, results in the browser can't be opened by clicking in anything but Internet Explorer). I have looked at Spotlight server, but that only supports OS X. Thanks!
