• How difficult it is to develope Apps for Android and iOS? [on hold]

  I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

• Running the application with F5 gives a message saying "\bin\Debug\Infrastructure.Layout.dll was not found"

  The problem here is the ProfileCatalog.xml file refers to the old assesmbly namesdlls. It does not get updated when the assembly names change. Steps to fix this issue: 1. Open the ProfileCatalog.xml file in the Shell project, and you'll find there are three ModuleInfo configuration items that need to have the solution name prefixed. 2. • Why ~/.bash_profile is not getting sourced when opening a terminal in Ubuntu 11.04?

  Problem I have an Ubuntu 11.04 Virtual Machine and I wanted to set up my Java development environment. I did as follows sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk Added the following entries to ~/.bash_profile export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin Save the changes and exit Open up a terminal again and typed the following echo $JAVA_HOME (blank) echo $PATH (displayed, but not the JAVA_HOME value) Nothing happened, like if the export of JAVA_HOME and it's addition to the PATH were never done. Solution I had to go to ~/.bashrc and add the following entry towards the end of file #Source bash_profile to set JAVA_HOME and add it to the PATH because for some reason is not being picked up . ~/.bash_profile Questions Why did I have to do that? I thought bash_profile, bash_login or profile in absence of those two get executed first before bashrc. Was in this case my terminal a non-login shell? If so, why when doing su after the terminal and putting the password it did not execute profile where I had also set the exports mentioned above?

• Ideas for card deck names [closed]

  I'm creating a card game, and wish to offer players to choose from different sets of playing cards. The game logic remains the same, only the design and graphics on the cards would be different. It would feature classic French set, German/Hungarian one, and a bunch of other custom designed ones. I'm looking for some cool names to give to those sets. I thought maybe to use names of some world cities like "London set", "Paris set", "Tokyo set", but there might be something better. I know this is really open-ended question, so there might not be a definitive "correct" answer, but I hope this kind of brainstorming would be useful to anyone looking for ideas to name a set of... well, anything. I'll up-vote any good idea, no matter if I don't end up using any of those.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Battery problem

  I have my laptop ( Dell Inspiron 14R) on dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7. While using Windows 7, I used to get about 2.5-3 hours on battery fully charged (with my cellphone connected for 3g Internet). The battery is almost 2 years old. But in Ubuntu 12.04, I'm getting only about 1-1.5 hrs on battery. I tried installing jupiter, also tried some tweaks that were mentioned in the forums, like editing the grub file. But nothing seems to work. I am not sure if any app is draining the battery. The one application that I use always is firefox. It's always open. Is there any way I could get at least 2.5 hrs of battery time?

• Backing up VPS and Database Servers for website

  I currently have an "un-managed" (no help from hosting company) windows vps server. I am working on a good backup solution to return my site back online within a few hours. I am pretty comfortable backing up and restoring my database, however what is a good solution for backing up my VPS for easy recovery? Should I just use windows backup and create an image? I'm open to suggestions. Additionally, has anyone had to restore an entire VPS before? Is it reasonable to have it back up and running in a few hours?

• how to modify another user's .profile from the recovery console?

  Pretty much everything is in the title, really! ;) I installed a few components to compile go programs, and the last step was to add the go directory to the path. Being a total ubuntu noob, I added the line PATH="Path/To/Folder", after the one that was already there. After the first reboot I can no longer log into ubuntu (the screen black-out for a while and then I'm back to the login screen, and the same chime greets me.) I've been able to boot in recovery mode, open the root's profile with vi, but I cant find my other user's profile, nor pretty much anything.. Any hint would be greatly appreciated! Pascal

  I would like to configure a keyboard shortcut for a particular folder in my Desktop. I will be using this folder quite often and is there a way to open them with a custom keyboard shortcut ? The remote thing I came across regarding this is this question which is for opening home folder similar to Windows, but I do not want to go to home folder and navigate from there all the way to a folder in the Desktop (mouse clicking the desktop folder is way too easier than this method). So my Question: Can I have custom keyboard shortcuts for custom folders like folders in Desktop ? I'm using 12.04.

I have being searching online for a long time, most of the answers are like delete ~/.gnome2/keyring XX , but I don't have such directory or go to password and keys , disable some option, but this window is empty in my case, very strange , even I add a new password keyring, it is still empty. • How do I get Chromium to show PDFs using Evince?

  Is there any way to get Chromium to use a mozpluggerrc/evince combination to show PDFs embedded into its own window? Right now, Chromium is just downloading PDFs. I can open them in an external evince window by clicking on the downloaded file. I am using Chrome 18.0.1025.168 under Ubuntu 12.04 (amd64). Here's the pdf section of my /etc/mozpluggerrc.d/62-documents.conf: application/pdf:pdf:PDF file application/x-pdf:pdf:PDF file text/pdf:pdf:PDF file text/x-pdf:pdf:PDF file repeat noisy swallow(evince) fill needs_xembed: evince "$file" mozpluggerrc does show up in about:plugins. BTW, this works just fine in Firefox. Note: I am not looking for hints on how to use Google Chrome's PDF plugin in Chromium.

• Soccer Game only with National Team names (country names) what about player names? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Legal issues around using real players names and team emblems in an open source game 2 answers Ok...this question hasn't been asked before, its very similar to some, but here's the difference: I am making a soccer/football simulator game, that only has national teams (with no official logos) just the country names and flags. Now, my doubt is the following...can I use real player names (that play or played on that national team?) From what I understand if I use a player name linked to a club like Barcelona FC (not a national team) I need the right from the club and the association that club is linked to, right? But If I am only linking the name just to a country...I might just need the permission of the actual player (that I am using his name) and not any other associations, correct? Also I've fixed switchable graphics bug, using this guide (STEP 2). I've tried to add 'LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=xvba LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib/va/drivers' to /etc/environment and rebooted system, but the result was the same. PLEASE HELP! :) Thanks! :]

• Flowmotion Running on Ubuntu Server [migrated]

  I am trying to configure Flowmotion to work on my Ubuntu Server. At present I use LAMP to serve pages from a Virtualbox installation. I will be moving this to a dedicated server but would like to enable true streaming of videos using this installation. I am only interested in open source streaming for a research project and although I have installed Flowmotion via apt-get I don't know how to start the service so that embedded videos located on the server will stream. Can anybody provide any information regarding this or online resources I may have missed? I have checked the documentation however if appears far too complex. Just clarify I'm running VirtualBox 4.2.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8 and Ubuntu Server 12.06 64-bit

• Gparted not working in live CD (usb)

  Using ubuntu 10.10 live usb. When atempting to open gparted (sudo gparted in a terminal), its window gets stuck a few seconds and disappears (i noticed that it closes when it's searching for /dev/sda/ partitions). After a while a window appears telling gparted closed unexpectedly and asking to restart it. Choosing this option won't do any effect. Typing sudo fdisk -l in a terminal does show a list of the drives and partitons correctly. Any ideas? Thanks.

  Sytmptom:   You have a list or document library page (allitems.aspx) and you are trying to add a Web part.  You get an error message: Unable to add selected Web part(s).  (name of Web part): The file is not checked out.  You must first check out this document before making changes. Publishing features are not turned on and it is not a page that lives in a library accessible by the GUI. Solution:  Open the site in SharePoint Designer and check out the page. Then, check in the page after modifications are done.  It seems like this is just a bug.

• Ubuntu 14.04 + nvidia-331-updates makes a blank desktop screen

  I upgraded my installation from 13.10 to 14.04. The problem is that whenever I install the Nvidia drivers from the GUI, upon reboot or trying to login again it only shows the wallpaper of my desktop and nothing else. The mouse does move around, but nothing works. I am unable to open a terminal or do anything else. If I go into the tty console and purge the drivers, then things seem to work again. I have an Optimus setup, with an onboard Intel and discrete Nvidia GTX770M card. It's a 64-bit architecture. I really need to work with CUDA, and was hopeful after hearing that nvidia-prime was released, but this is a real downer. Any help on this?

  Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains. The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove.   Noob here. OK, I 1 Open the Dash. 2 Type "file". An app appears, called "files", icon looks like ta 2-drawer file cabinet. I click that, the app opens 3: I click the "Search button". I type the file name in the box and hit Enter. 4: The program thinks for a while, then displays a result. Great! the program found the file I was ilooking for! IT knows where myfile.foo is, BUT I DON'T! IT DOESN'T F%*%#ING SAY WHERE IT IS!!!! How do I find out where it is, please? I hate to say this, but is there an app that works like Windows Explorer (but doesn't crash every 2 minutes)?

• FxCop ... Where have you been all my life?

  I was recently introduced to microsoft's tool that analyzes managed code assemblies called FxCop. It points out possible design, localization, performance, and security improvements against a pre defined set of rules (and also accepts custom rules). At first I was unsure how to go about using it as it seems to be aimed at software developers (.exe and .dll) . Its easy to get around this with the following steps: 1)Create a new folder (i.e C:\Code Analysis) 2)Publish your web application into the new folder 3)Open FxCop and add all the dll files from the newly created bin folder  to be scrutinized. • Launch Specific OEPE Workspace from the Start Menu

  I frequently have multiple Eclipse-based projects running simultaneously, sometimes on different versions of Eclipse. I have made a mess of a few workspaces by accidentally opening them in the wrong version of Eclipse. To thwart my own forgetfulness, I went seeking a way to launch directly to a workspace and found it at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/209789/starting-eclipse-w-specific-workspace. Essentially, add the -data switch to your icon's open command, such as: C:\eclipse\eclipse.exe -data E:\MyData\Clients\Confidential\EclipseGCDPGive it a unique name and stick it on your Start Menu (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu). Makes my life a bit easier and hopefully yours, too.
