• Windows 8 "ate" 100GB of my SSD

  Yesterday I've done a completely fresh Windows 8 Pro install on brand new Samsung SSD. I recall that just after the installation Windows was taking about 10GB. I've installed all the updates and when today I entered My Computer I've almost got a heart attack: disk C: 12.3 GB free of 118 GB! The file explorer, when I enter the disk highlight everything and go to Properties, tells me that the files in there take only 22.5 GB of space which seems reasonable. So where is my 100 GB?

• Mount a remote Linux hard drive as another Windows 7 partition during boot?

  I would like to mount a hard drive on a remote computer (running on CentOS 6) as a Windows drive so that I can install programs to that drive. The primary hard drive for my Windows machine (which is at home) is pretty small, I have a Linux server sitting in a remote data center with a much larger hard drive and allow me to install more stuff. I know most of you are going to say Samba, unfortunately the biggest problem for me in this case is that I can not mount Samba as a network share unless I start OpenVPN or SSH tunneling first, which is not good for my case because I will install some startup programs to the remote drive as well. Therefore, the remote drive has to be ready and work just like another drive BEFORE any of the startup programs start to load. Is that possible? My home PC has Windows 7 Professional 32 bit installed and the remote server is a Xen virtual server running on CentOS 6. I have admin/root permissions for both. Thanks a lot!

• Problems with dual monitor & resolutions, only in 14.04

  I installed Ubuntu 14.04 but i am having weird problems with my dual monitors and the resolutions. I also tried Xubuntu 14.04 and was having the same problem. I have one 32 inch LG TV with 1920x1080 and one monitor with 1280x1024 resolution. When i first start my 32 inch gets 1360x768, if i then try to change to 1920x1080, everythings looks fine and the prompt asking me if i want to keep settings comes up and starts the countdown, but after 2 seconds my computer freezes, and after a few more seconds it reboots itself. However, if i disable my smaller monitor first, i can change to 1920x1080 on my 32 inch without problems, but if i then activate the second monitor the same problem happens again. in Xubuntu 14.04 i can change the refresh rate, if i run the 32 inch at 30hz or 50hz everytying works, but i would like to be able to run it at 60hz. I'm currently running Xubuntu 13.10 without this problem. My graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 4850. What is causing this problem, grahpics drivers? Kernel? Xorg? And how do i solve it?

• When Typing on my mac the cursor moves/deletes/replaces text.

  Help! I don't know what is happening, with my computer (Macbook Black OSX 1ha0.6.6) but recently whenever I am typing my cursor suddenly moves in the middle of my frase or paragraph, deleting text, replacing words or just closing applications. I don't know what might be the cause but it's driving me crazy. I have disabled typinator (which had worked fine for a couple of months) and looked through the keybindings in SystemPreferencesKeyboardKeyboard Shortcuts. But for have not been able to find any answers. It happens in all apps that require typing. Textmate, Chrome, FIrefox, Texedit, Mail. Does anybody know if there is a way I can review all keyboard shortcuts, to see if the issue lies there or any suggestions? Thanking you dearly Dave

• Windows 7 ISO not booting from DVD drive?

  I've downloaded Windows 7 x64 Pro Upgrade from the volume license center. I've also downloaded the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. I'll burn it using this tool and while it will show up in Explorer as if the burn worked correctly, when I try to boot to the DVD on startup, I get a "No operating system found" error (this is a newer Lenovo). My Ubuntu Live CD works fine, am I missing something? I read that there's problems if you try to burn a 64bit copy from a 32bit computer, but I'm currently running Win7x64, so that shouldn't be a problem. I've also tried burning with ImgBurn and Windows 7 built ISO burner, no success. Obviously there's a step I'm missing here, what gives?

• Call connects through Emapthy, but no voice

  I am trying to make calls using Empathy on Debian.The call rings and connects, but I can't hear voice, or answering machines. I had a similar problem a while back that was caused by my PBX not being compatible with a protocol. The protocol issue is fixed now and Linphone works fine on a different pc. I tried using Ekiga, on the problem computer, and it works fine.The problem seems to be with the settings on Empathy. I need to get this going. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Ubuntu 13.04 Sound Problem after following weird commands

  After launching a few commands : echo autospawn = no >> ~/.config/pulse/client.conf #use ~/.pulse/client.conf on Ubuntu <= 12.10 killall pulseaudio $LANG=C pulseaudio -vvvv --log-time=1 > ~/pulseverbose.log 2>&1 My sound does not work. (just with the speakers, with headphones it works but I can not change the volume) The sound icon on the top right corner does show a speaker with a single non continuous line. I can not change the volume; it is frozen. There can be an extremely low output of the sound (I hear something but I am not sure...) It does not show a single output device that is avalaible, not even the "dummie". I have tried to reset pulseaudio, alsa, remove it, purging it, reinstalling it, without having success. EDIT: I have tried launching pulseaudio via the terminal. It worked :D However, I am very surprised why it does not automatically start at the start of the computer. Any ideas ? • how to recover lost partitions data

  I have a 2TB SATA drive that was being used as file storage on my UBUNTU computer. I was re-imaging my windows box so I used that drive to back up some files to it. I did this by taking the drive from my windows PC and putting it in my UBUNTU PC, mounted it and copied the files over. After the windows refresh I thought it would be easier to take the 2 TB drive and dock it in the external dock my Windows case has built in. Anyway it would recognize in BIOS but windows would not see it (because it was EXT3 or EXT4) so when I went into the disk manager it advised me the drive needed to be initialized. Me not thinking I initialized it as a GUID Partition table. Now it sees it as a blank drive, even in UBUNTU. I have done nothing else to write or change the drive. I was wondering if there is a qay to repair the old partitioning and get access to my files back? many thanks! EDIT: I followed the instructions in the link @kniwor sent me. • Windows program to remove titlebar, frame, etc from a window?

  I like playing computer games in windowed mode, as opposed to full screen. I don't like staring at the title bar, frame, and other UI junk. I also don't like seeing other stuff on my desktop around the window. Is there a simple Windows program that will strip the UI chrome off of an arbitrary window from some other application? Extra points for an easy way to put a black screen underneath the window, hiding the desktop. Note: I'm looking specifically to handle windows that are smaller than my desktop size. There's a variety of 'windowed maximized' options that make a window exactly the desktop size, and positioned so all the UI decorations are off screen. (E.g.: ShiftWindow). I'm trying to strip all the decorations away from a window that's smaller than desktop size.

  Is there a remote desktop app for the Mac that allows multiple people to be remoted in at the same time, similar to RDP in Windows? I've used VNC, but that only allows one person to control the computer. For some background: I'd like to set up a mac that many users can RDP into from PC's to do XCode development. • Any way to overwrite (not merge) Outlook contacts when importing from a file?

  I'm trying to create a contact list for Outlook 2010 that will contain contact information for every person in my company. I intend on keeping the list current, which means I will be manually adding new employees to the contact list, and removing contacts who no longer work here. The contact list will reside in its own subfolder within the Outlook Contacts folder. I want to periodically export this contact list as a .csv file, and allow the other employees in the company to import it into Outlook on their own computer, thus providing them with a comprehensive and up-to-date company contact list. The problem is, Outlook 2010 only wants to merge contact lists, not overwrite them. This means that any contacts who are no longer with the company will not be removed from the contact lists on employee stations. Is there any way to force Outlook 2010 to overwrite the contact list? Oh how I long for the days of Outlook 2003 and its tidy .pab files.

• Crontab file is garbled! HELP!

  I accidentally deleted my .bashrc file in Ubuntu 11.10. I think I restored it but I have two major issues now: Everything that I type has a red squiggly line under it in this field and the suggestion is a german word.   I am in the process of writing a Red Hat 6.5 Kickstart disc with hardened security. I have run a program to determine where the weaknesses are in my system, and apparently there is a medium severity problem by accepting IPV6 redirects. When I implement the following line in my post script in my kickstart, I can't access any websites externally with wget, or ssh/scp in from my computer. sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.accept_redirects=0 Is there a workaround to this so that the system will still be hardened but I will be able to access systems that are external?

• How can I get the comment of the current authorized_keys ssh key ?

  Edit: What I really need to know WHICH ssh key from authorized_keys has been used to identify the currently logged on user. According to "man sshd": Protocol 2 public key consist of options, keytype, base64-encoded key, comment. I see that when I use ssh-keygen, the comment is usually the local identity of the user. Is there any way to access this value when I'm on the remote computer ? (Kind of like the SSH_CLIENT shell variable) (Assuming I enforce the comment to be a remote identity of some sort, I would like to log this from a shell-script! This is on ubuntu)

• Ctrl Alt Left/Right moves mouse - how to find responsible software?

  Hi, I've got a bit of a strange problem. On one of our computers, pressing ctrl + alt + left/right/up/down will move the mouse pointer on the screen, but it's not clear which software makes this happen. It interferes with other software that uses these shortcuts. I've already tried disabling some software, such as WinKey and a Kensington mouse driver, but that didn't make a difference. It's happening on a Windows XP SP3 computer by the way. Does anyone have an idea of how to find the software that traps this shortcut? Suggestions for actual (types of) software that might be doing this are welcome too. Thanks!

• connecting hostname to server

  I have an ubuntu server installed on my server with virtualmin webmin. everything is good the server itself....I can connect to localhost and the virtualmin manager (http://localhost:10000). the problem is, I can't connect to it from a client computer. For example when I enter the IP address of the server, its shows me 403 forbidden error (sometimes its shows the homepage right)...but the virtualmin manager could not open... if my website is example.com with this ip: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, i can't connect to example.com:10000 or xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:10000 what should I do?

  I bought a used 15" ViewSonic LCD monitor (VP150m) and noticed that it has a 3.5mm connector on the back labeled “touch i/o”. I’m trying to figure out how to use the touch function but am having trouble finding anything useful. First, I cannot find any information on what kind of cable it uses (TS, TRS, TRRS, etc.), or how to connect it to the computer. Second, I cannot find touch drivers for it—though I can find a page that mentions how easy it is to install them. Does anyone have any information on using the touchscreen function of the VP150m? • Ubuntu Volume overriding settings set in Alsamixer

  Problem: How do I "lock in" the volume I set through alsamixer? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I adjusted the bass/treble columns in alsamixer but changing the system volume resets them all back to 100% I did save the settings by running alsactl store but everything is reset once I touch Ubuntu's volume icon in the top menu bar. This is rather painful because the computer is hooked up to a 650watt system with a massive subwoofer. As much as I enjoy my music, there's no need to have the walls vibrate :) What can I do to prevent Ubuntu from overriding the settings?

• Man pages in Linux

  I don't seem to have all the man pages that I need. For example, my college computers (running Fedora 14) have man pages for ASCII, all the standard C libraries (stdlib.h, stdio.h) and so on and so forth. I wish to "install" these pages, after looking up on the Internet I couldn't really find anything that made sense. How can I get, say, the man-page of ASCII (I know it's not really a command or a daemon or anything like that, but typing man ASCII on the college computer gets me a page with the ASCII value table + a little more information). I don't want to keep using the Internet for looking up man pages every time I need to look up a function, function prototype or the ASCII table or something like that.

  Just for learning, I have recompiled the linux kernel with different options, installed and boot from it. It was both instructive and straight forward. However, I was overwhelmed by the big number of options available. My questions are: 1.- Does it make sense to spend time trying to optimize the linux kernel for my particular laptop? • Issues connecting VMWare VM to Windows 7 (host)

  I am on windows 7 trying to figure out why i cannot ping my computer or my VM from the other one, yet I am able to ping the router on both and other computers on the network. My desktop is running windows 7 64 bit and my vm is running CentOS 64 bit (which is what I use to test my web server stuff). At my school the VM has a dedicated IP and i don't have this issue, but I am home now and having issues trying to set this up behind my dumb router...I had already tried changing the VINC (i believe) to hide the vmnet1 and vmnet8 connections from the windows firewall and this seemed to have worked for like 5 minutes and then stopped... • Best ways to move a server room and 80 desktops to a new building

  Need to plan the best way to physically move a server room (12 IBM x3400 towers) and all associated networking equipment to a new building. Everything is going, comms (80 strong call centre operation), desktops(80-90) the whole lot and has to be done efficiently over a weekend. What I cant seem to find are the best ways to move equipment, i.e is it best to remove hard drives and pack them separetely, do I pack the chassis' with foam and/or surround them in bubble wrap? Are there specific products designed to move computer equipment and where would I find these. The internet has failed me so far, please help

• What software can I use to co-ordinate a projector screen?

  When I connect my laptop to a projector, it shows everything that is going-on on my computer. However, I want want to show only certain things to users ( like videos, images, etc ). It would be good if my mouse-motions could be hidden as well. So is there any software using which I can give presentations without sharing my screen with the projector ( that is, it shows what I want it to show rather than mirroring what's going on in my laptop screen ) ?I've serached Google a lot and haven't found a solution as yet. • Synced audio ouput on multiple machines? VLC? hardware solutions?

  I'm wondering if there is any software or hardware solutions to synced audio or audio and video across multiple computers or devices on a network. I've seen Sonos, and it might be a good solution, but it's also a very expensive solution. I'd like to be able to play something with realtime audio output on one PC, but hear it on speakers throughout the house, being it the home theater receiver, or another computer in another room. I saw a solution using the apple iport express, but the latency was unacceptable for anything other than just music. I'd like to avoid running audio wires with baluns to a bunch of amplifiers scattered all over the place when I have cat5 run everywhere. Is anyone familiar with using this kind of process for whole home audio? The latency is a big deal for me, if I've got video attached to the sound (e.g. watching a hockey game)
