  Hi Guys, I am using JQuery's nth-child selector to alter the margin on every 3rd div with a class of photo_post_thumbnail, but it alters it every 2nd div? Can anyone spot what I am doing wrong? • How Does Facebook Know What Image To Parse Out of An Article?

  First off I want to say that I wasn't really sure where to post this but it is very much programming related. If it is in the wrong spot I apologize and please let me know where I should post it instead. When sharing an article on a friends wall, facebook will grab a thumbnail of the article. How do they always get the right thumbnail from articles? It doesn't grab the logo img element of of http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/07/world/asia/07convoys.html?hp for example but rather grabs the correct image element that corresponds with the article. I'm looking to do something similar and was wondering of a good way to parse the html to find the image given this example. Thanks.

I'm already convinced a language is just a tool, so I'm not interested in a religious war. I agree with the Pragmatic Programmers that learning one language/year is a good thing for your professional development So, in your considered opinion, what kinds of applications does Python hit the sweet spot? And why? What advantages does it have, and why do these advantages outweigh the costs in adopting Python? ADD: I also plan on learning a pure functional language like Scheme.

• Android return to the original position of the view after MotionEvent

  My application currently changes to another random int (View) when I let go of it (ACTION_UP) but the view stays in the same spot where I dropped it. • What Use are Threads Outside of Parallel Problems on MultiCore Systesm?

  Threads make the design, implementation and debugging of a program significantly more difficult. Yet many people seem to think that every task in a program that can be threaded should be threaded, even on a single core system. I can understand threading something like an MPEG2 decoder that's going to run on a multicore cpu ( which I've done ), but what can justify the significant development costs threading entails when you're talking about a single core system or even a multicore system if your task doesn't gain significant performance from a parallel implementation? Or more succinctly, what kinds of non-performance related problems justify threading? Edit Well I just ran across one instance that's not CPU limited but threads make a big difference: TCP, HTTP and the Multi-Threading Sweet Spot Multiple threads are pretty useful when trying to max out your bandwidth to another peer over a high latency network connection. Non-blocking I/O would use significantly less local CPU resources, but would be much more difficult to design and implement.

• How do you determine using stat() whether a file is a symbolic link?

  I basically have to write a clone of the UNIX ls command for a class, and I've got almost everything working. One thing I can't seem to figure out how to do is check whether a file is a symbolic link or not. From the man page for stat(), I see that there is a mode_t value defined, S_IFLNK. This is how I'm trying to check whether a file is a sym-link, with no luck (note, stbuf is the buffer that stat() returned the inode data into): switch(stbuf.st_mode & S_IFMT){ case S_IFLNK: printf("this is a link\n"); break; case S_IFREG: printf("this is not a link\n"); break; } My code ALWAYS prints this is not a link even if it is, and I know for a fact that the said file is a symbolic link since the actual ls command says so, plus I created the sym-link... • MFC/WIN32: mouse hover highlight in listctrl

  The ListView control of Windows Explorer gives a highlight to whatever item is under the mouse, without affecting the current selection. This helps enormously with relating what item a given tooltip applies to within a listview - especially in report mode. However, I am currently unable to find any APIs that would give my MFC application's CListCtrl that same behavior. Extended styles only have LVS_EX_TRACKSELECT, which actually alters the current selection (yuck!). Does anyone know how to provide a standard CListCtrl (or whatever that actually sits on top of) the mouse-hot-tracking capability? I found some articles on how to provide per cell and per row tooltip text, but its hard to tell what the tooltips relate to without something highlighting...

• The best way to deploy one site for two companies in ColdFusion?

  My client has multiple companies; different names/logos etc, but all the content on the sites are identical with the exception of said names/logos. In a ColdFusion environment, what would be the best way for me to serve up identical content and swap out the logos/company names on the fly so I can keep everything in one spot? Is this a jQuery solution? regex? Or will ColdFusion enable me to deploy this in an efficient manner based on the url and session variables?

  Possible Duplicates: Why ‘this’ is a pointer and not a reference? SAFE Pointer to a pointer (well reference to a reference) in C# The this keyword in C++ gets a pointer to the object I currently am. My question is why is the type of this a pointer type and not a reference type. Are there any conditions under which the this keyword would be NULL? My immediate thought would be in a static function, but Visual C++ at least is smart enough to spot this and report static member functions do not have 'this' pointers. Is this in the standard?

• Possible to bind an event listener to a (hypothetical) onChangeInnerHTML event?

  In my app, I have an OL tag whose contents are changed by various other dynamic events. Is there some way to put a listener on that OL so that I can execute a function whenever its contents are altered in any way? In this example I need to update a count of items in the list which appears in another spot in the interface. I am using jQuery if that helps. The contents of the OL are being changed with OL.append() and LI.remove(), in case those methods have some special events that I don't know about Thanks!

• Mod_Rewrite: Insert "/" between variables and values in URL

  Hello all, I am attempting clean useful URLs using mod_rewrite. I am sure this is a common question but I am not so hot with mod_rewrite: I have this URL: http://mysite.com/user.php?user=fatcatmat&sort=popularv I want to be able to rewrite it like this: http://mysite.com/user/user/fatcatmat/sort/popularv (Is there a way to remove duplicates in a URL?) I think I have managed to do the removal of the PHP extension. RewriteRule ^(.*)\$ $1.php [nc] Is the above correct? For the separate pages, I would have something like this. RewriteRule ^/?user(/)?$ user.php Main Question: Its a bit tedious to do all the above but is there a MEGA rewrite rule that will just place "/" in between variables and their values and remove the .php extension from all pages? • emacs/Python: running python-shell in line buffered vs. block buffered mode

  Hi all - In a related question and answer here, someone hypothesized that python-shell within emacs(23.2) was block-buffered instead of line-buffered. The recommended fix was to add sys.stdout.flush() to the spot in my script where I want stdio to flush its contents to the python-shell. Is there someway to trick python-shell (running in emacs 23.2 on Windows, not Linux) into either a) thinking it's attached to a TTY or b) using line-buffered instead of block-buffered mode? I don't see why I'd be able to do this in IDLE but not emacs. I'd rather customize emacs than add sys.stdout.flush() throughout my scripts. Call me lazy :-). Thanks, Mike

A few obvious choices come to mind, but I want to know if there are other options, better choices or if we've made the same decision as a lot of you. QuickFIX - Stable, C++ implementation - so you've got unmanaged code to interop with. FIX4NET - C# implementation - seems to have some gaps in its implementation. DIY - Chime in here if you've made your own FIX engine Let me throw in some caveats here. I'm not looking for sub 100 microsecond processing. Performance is a requirement, but not so much that it's driving my decisions. A solid product that is stable, performs well and is flexible enough to deal with vendor specific dialects is the sweet spot. The more we can do in .NET the better.

• Python editor/IDE for OS X

  As a (reasonably) new Python programmer, what IDEs or editors would you recommend for Python programming on OS X and why (i.e. what features/capabilities/workflow techniques really help)? I've used Xcode and played a bit with TextMate but I can't really say that either have really hit the spot for me (although TextMate's code completion is pretty neat, I think i've been spoilt with code-completion facilities provided by editors for statically-typed languages so maybe i'm subconsciously comparing apples and oranges) I'm looking to increase my efficacy with Python and any tips would be appreciated. I know people have asked similar questions for Python IDEs in general but I am specifically concentrating on OS X and the 'Mac way'. If Xcode or TextMate are thought highly of, perhaps some suggestions as to how I could get the most benefit from the tools would help.

• Loop with pointer arithmetic refuse to stay within boundary in C. Gives me segfault.

  Hi have made this function which is made to replicate an error that I can't get past. It looks like this: void enumerate(double *c, int size){ while(c < &c[size]){ printf("%lf\n", *c); c++; } } I have added some printf's in there and it gives me: Adressof c: 0x100100080, Adressof c + size: 0x1001000a8 I then also print the address of c for each iteration of the loop, it reaches 0x1001000a8 but continues past this point even though the condition should be false as far as I can tell until I get a segfault. If anyone can spot the problem, please tell me, I have been staring at this for a while now. Thanks.

• Adding a textblock to a custom wpf control (piepiece control from codeplex)

  Hi Stackoverflow! I'm currently building a Surface application where the main navigation is a circular menu. For each menu item I'm using a custom control that I found on codeproject.com: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WPF/PieChartDataBinding.aspx (PiePiece control) The number of submenu items (which is also piepiece controls) comes from a database and thus dynamically loaded. What I can't figure out is how I add a textblock to this custom control to display the submenu item text. It needs to follow the PiePiece's RotationAngle property to line up correctly. Anyone got a hot-fix for this? I was thinking about adding another dependencyproperty to the piepiece custom control, but that way I can't set the font-family, size etc (can I?) Any input on this is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

• OpenGL embedded in gtk has colour badly displayed

  Note that this is a re-write now that I have more clues as to where the problem could be... I am creating a GTK GUI which contains two embedded OpenGL displays. Both use the same shader code (complied once for each). On my normal hardware, this works fine. On a virtual machine running on the same hardware, I get horrible colours -- see images. I suspect that the shader code is at fault -- certainly dropping a simpler shader does make the problem moot. However, I do need both diffuse and spot lights in my shader thus making it non-trivial. Anyone has seen this before?

• php require class call from inside method

  from my understanding, require pastes code into the calling php file. what if you were requiring from inside a method...it would paste the entire code/class inside the method, blocking the next statement in the method. eg. function test() { require 'pathtosomeclasscode'; somestatement; // any code after the require is blocked. } how do i get around this, to be able to require code where-ever, without it being pasted in that exact spot?   I usually set the layout like this where I specify the gap inside the VerticalLayout tag <s:Group> <s:layout> <s:VerticalLayout gap="10"/> </s:layout> </s:Group> I'm trying to specify the layout as a property of the Group like this <s:Group layout="{new VerticalLayout()}"> </s:Group> but not sure how to specify the gap in this case. Couldn't spot something in the documentation to show if it's possible to include gap as a parameter when creating new VerticalLayout or what its position would be.

• How to make margin be relative to the center of the UIElement and not its top-left corner in a Grid?

  I'd like the Margin property to reference the center of the UIElement and not the top-left corner. That way when I change the width/height of the UIElement it stays in the same spot. Is there a way to configure this behavior or I'll have to rely on Binding to make the adjustment ? Thanks. • Best way to implement nested loops in a view in asp.net mvc 2

  Hi, Trying to implement some nested loops that are spitting out good old nested html table data. So the question is; What is the best way to loop through lists and nested lists in order to produce easily maintainable code. It can get quite narly quite fast when working with multiple nested tables or lists. Should I make use of a HTML helper, or make something with the ViewModel to simplify this? A requirement is if there are no children at a node there should be an empty row on that spot with some links for creation and into other parts of the system.
