• A Change of Seasons...

  As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able! • Good resources for learning about graphics hardware

  I'm looking for some good learning resources for graphics hardware (and associated low level software). Basically I want to learn more about what goes on underneath the opengl/direcx API layers in terms of how things are implemented. I familiar with what happens in principle during the various stages of the rendering pipeline (viewing, projection, clipping, rasterization etc). My goal is to be able to make better and more informed decisions about tradeoffs and potential optimisations when graphics/shader programming with respect to the following kinds of issues; batching view culling occlusions draw order avoiding state changes triangles vs pointsprites texture sampling etc Basically whatever the graphics programmer needs to know about modern graphics hardware in order to become more effective. I'm not really looking for specific optimisation techniques, rather I need more general knowledge so that I will naturally write more efficient code.

• Education path advice

  I'm thinking of continuing my education and going for masters degree. I must decide between two programs. One is CS/IT and focuses on algorithms, math, multimedia, web technologies with optional interesting courses like AI and robotics. Second is about business process management, software architecture and project management. I have some experience in business software and I must say, I never though I need deeper understating of algorithms or program language but I always felt that I'm lacking in project planing or management knowledge. On the other side, CS/IT looks more interesting but what are the chances to find a job that require such skills?

• Monitor Display issue

  When booting I will have to boot maybe 3 or 4 times to get a screen that is not displayed diagonally or is not using the full screen width. Hardware specification: HP s7727c with AMD64 and NVIDIA chipsets and Insignia 22" monitor/TV. The Ubuntu version is 9.10 Karmic. I'd like to stay current with Ubuntu on this machine, but have gone down to 9.10 to get this described functioning. I tried higher versions and could not get past the "black screen" I think this issue is connected to the NVIDIA chipset/driver problem. I am a GUI user and I don't follow the other solutions posted which make use of the command line. I suppose if the command line solution could be given without making any assumptions of the receiving person's knowledge base, then even I and others like me, could implement it. • Starting android Development

  I am considering learning android development. I have some basic knowledge in C++. I downloaded the ADT plugin and eclipse. Now while starting from http://developers.android.com I see the codes were in XML. So I googled for learning XML. The best site I found was http://www.w3schools.org but there I found that for learning XML I have to learn HTML and CSS. So I learned the basics of HTML and CSS. But, Now I find in that learning java is a must. So can someone give idea about the sequental languages that I should study now? Should I learn php,mysql too. BTW, I have a dream to work in google :p

• Reasons to use C++ ?

  I've read here and in other places that learning C++, C or other low level languages are a must to get a more low level perspective on development. I agree with this, but I find it hard to find a reason to use C++ over C# or similar languages. Most of the work I do is web based, so there's no need for C++ there. Other work is windows based, and most things work fine in C# there, so what sort of situation could I use C++? I don't do any high performance stuff, nor do I create games, mostly business applications. I'm looking for an excuse to expand on my C++ knowledge but I need some motivation other than 'because the internet said I should'.

• Is it possible to give an animated GIF a transparent background?

  I'm making a Fire Emblem-esque game. There are very cute 2D frames I made for each character, and, like a game like Fire Emblem, I want these characters to animate constantly. To circumvent the graphics programming involved I came up with a novel idea! I would make each character an animated gif, and only in special conditions ever halt their constant movement - in that case just change what image is being displayed. Simple enough. But I have a dilemma - I want the background of my .gifs to be transparent (so that the "grass" behind each character naturally shows, as per the screenshot - which has them as still images with transparent backgrounds). I know how to make a background transparent in numerous tools (GIMP, Photoshop). But it seems every .gif creator replaces the transparent background with something and I can't edit it back to transparent. Is it possible to have a .gif with a transparent "background"? Perhaps my knowledge of file formats is limiting me here.

  I took my old computer (AMD 5600+, 2GB RAM, 880gt, 250GB SATA, etc) and decided to jump and try Ubuntu for the first time. I have very very little knowledge (Red Hat when I was younger) with Linux in general. My main desktop is Windows 7 and my plan is to use the Ubuntu computer as a file server sort of speak. I want to be able to setup back up schedules from my Windows PC to the Ubuntu PC (plan on leaving this on 24/7 to double as a Seedbox) How do I go on to doing this?

• Why did the team at LMAX use Java and design the architecture to avoid GC at all cost?

  Why did the team at LMAX design the LMAX Disruptor in Java but all their design points to minimizing GC use? If one does not want to have GC run then why use a garbage collected language? Their optimizations, the level of hardware knowledge and the thought they put are just awesome but why Java? I'm not against Java or anything, but why a GC language? Why not use something like D or any other language without GC but allows efficient code? Is it that the team is most familiar with Java or does Java possess some unique advantage that I am not seeing? Say they develop it using D with manual memory management, what would be the difference? They would have to think low level (which they already are), but they can squeeze the best performance out of the system as it's native.

  When we create a .cs file means code file class is automatically create. That .cs file means class has default usings for namespace. using System;using System.Collections.Generic;using System.Linq;using System.Web;using System.Web.UI;using System.Web.UI.WebControls; We don't use all namespaces  in that class so we have to remove unused namespaces from file. We can remove  namespace manually but it takes time and need full knowledge of class library so we can use Visual Studio . Step 1:  Right Click in .cs File. Step 2:  Move on Organize usings. Step 3: Click on Remove Unused Usings. After that we have only those namespaces in the file these are using.

  As the Title says, the question is Whats the best way of learning how to Develop Java Games? Indeed there's over thousands of tutorials explaining and teaching you the basic's of Java and how It works but they are usually and majority of the tutorial's teaching you Java basic's are boring and don't push you as you could do. Basically, is there any tutorials out there that push you so and give you problems you have to solve and push your knowledge so you get a much better understanding of creating java games. This seems a ideal question for new people learning Java and hopefully should help newbie's learning Java. (Sorry if this sounds noobish).

  I'm looking for ideas and resources pertaining to software project management, specifically resources that I can direct project managers to in order to broaden their knowledge of the subject. So for example an obvious choice here would be The Mythical Man Month - I do think that this would be an appropriate suggested first read for /some/, but not all. Probably for managers that arrive at the job with more of a management background rather than a technical one TMMM might be a bit 'heavy'. • How do I start a personal programming project?

  I've just started a programming job where I'm applying my 'How to code' knowledge to what I'm being taught of 'How to Program' (They are different!). As well of this I'm taught how to capture requirements from clients, so as to start a new project. How do I do this for a nebulous personal project? I say nebulous, as I often find halfway through programming something, I want to expand what my program will do, or alter the result. Eventually I'm tangled in code, and have to restart. This can be frustrating and off putting. Conversely when given a fixed task, and fixed requirements, it's much easier to programme from a - b. So how do I plan a personal programming project?

  I am well versed in the basics of Java programming, although through most of my career I have been maintaining, upgrading, and debugging someone else's Java code. I am mainly familiar with basic servlet applications. I have a strong beginner knowledge of Maven and Ant. I have more web development with Ruby on Rails, but would like to bring my Java skills up to par with regard to web development. It seems the world of Java is so big, I have no idea what the next logical step is for me. Spring? JAX-RB? EJBs? What is the next logical step for someone like me and how would you recommend I approach it?

• SETUP for sending Mail via postfix to GMAIL

  My knowledge of mail delivery systems is near ZERO I have stand alone PC running UBUNTU 12.04 (no other OP systems) I am developing a web system with PHP and want to send an email to users that have registered. I have installed POSTFIX and set it up to work with GMAIL (I hope correctly) My little test program appears to send the email but it does not arrive at destination. Is there some special code for SMTP or something else needed to install? Please can you give me step by step instructions of what must be installed. • Is someone aware of any multi threaded unrar program?

  I was searching in the past (past few weeks) for a program/software which is multithreaded and it is able to extract rarparts using multi threading. What software's i've already tried? unrar, unrar-nonfree, rar, 7zip It seemed to me that none of them is multi threaded and therefore they are all slow. The solution would be needed in cli format so if not necessary the no gui. Is someone aware of something like this? I asked on other irc's for suggestions and they told me, that the best is to write one myself. I may be agree with them, but i don't have these type of knowledge to achieve this task.

• Time it would take me to learn c++ given my speed? [closed]

  I am a student in second year of engineering and my life is hard, nowadays. To make my future secure and at least get good jobs, I have started learning C++; I have learned J2SE, ASP.NET (little, basic C#), PHP (little), HTML, CSS, AJAX, Javascript, SQL, a little android development (I have built a benchmark app) in 4 months and have received 1 gold medal in CSS and 1 each in HTML, CSS, Java. I am able to make things in C#, Java and all other, so I can apply all this knowledge. I was able to do all this, because I loved learning and I hate to ask this question. How much time would it take me to learn C++, good-enough to get good jobs at Google, Microsoft? I am currently learning data structures, so that's excluded.

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. I think that a coder can demonstrate better his abilities with games made in c++, because it requires a knowledge deeper in many fields. However, currently there is a lot of companies that develop his games with UDK. Now I don't know if is better specialize in a game engine like UDK.

  I work at a newly-minted startup of five people. We have a Ph. D in machine learning, a former member of the RSpec core team, and the guy who compiles the Git binary for OS X. That's just the employees; the founder has a Ph. D and was CTO for a multi-billion-dollar corporation before leaving to start a (successful) startup, and has now left that to start this one. We also might get a guy with a Ph. D in math. Aaaaaaaaand then there's me, college-dropout intern. I think I'm pretty smart and I'm reading non-stop, but the delta of experience, skill, and knowledge between me and my co-workers is just breathtaking. So put yourself in their shoes: you've got a bright young intern who has a lot to learn but is at least energetic. What would be annoying? What use would you hope to get out of him in the here and now? What would be pleasantly surprising if it happened?

• Dell Vostro 1510 trackpad

  A week ago I moved totally from Windows 7 to Ubuntu. I've been really happy with the transition bar one annoying glitch. My trackpad sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. All other hardware including peripherals work flawlessly, including a Logitech ball mouse, Wacom Bamboo pen and touch and wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse combo. I can't see any pattern to when and why the trackpad works. Occasionally on rebooting, it will work, but then I can reboot 10x in a row and it won't work, then I leave it a day, then reboot and it works flawlessly. Any ideas on a solution or appropriate method for me to deb it? My knowledge of Ubuntu/Linux is sketchy at best so I could do with a little help :)

This title does not require any certification or any other proof of knowledge by the nominee and is awarded solely upon the one's contribution to community. As a member of Intel Developer Network I am also aware of Intel Black Belt award, that is in many aspects similar to Microsoft MVP. But this is all I know. Are there any other honor awards from top players in software industry?
