  • Problem with Precision floating point operation in C

    - by Microkernel
    Hi Guys, For one of my course project I started implementing "Naive Bayesian classifier" in C. My project is to implement a document classifier application (especially Spam) using huge training data. Now I have problem implementing the algorithm because of the limitations in the C's datatype. ( Algorithm I am using is given here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_spam_filtering ) PROBLEM STATEMENT: The algorithm involves taking each word in a document and calculating probability of it being spam word. If p1, p2 p3 .... pn are probabilities of word-1, 2, 3 ... n. The probability of doc being spam or not is calculated using Here, probability value can be very easily around 0.01. So even if I use datatype "double" my calculation will go for a toss. To confirm this I wrote a sample code given below. #define PROBABILITY_OF_UNLIKELY_SPAM_WORD (0.01) #define PROBABILITY_OF_MOSTLY_SPAM_WORD (0.99) int main() { int index; long double numerator = 1.0; long double denom1 = 1.0, denom2 = 1.0; long double doc_spam_prob; /* Simulating FEW unlikely spam words */ for(index = 0; index < 162; index++) { numerator = numerator*(long double)PROBABILITY_OF_UNLIKELY_SPAM_WORD; denom2 = denom2*(long double)PROBABILITY_OF_UNLIKELY_SPAM_WORD; denom1 = denom1*(long double)(1 - PROBABILITY_OF_UNLIKELY_SPAM_WORD); } /* Simulating lot of mostly definite spam words */ for (index = 0; index < 1000; index++) { numerator = numerator*(long double)PROBABILITY_OF_MOSTLY_SPAM_WORD; denom2 = denom2*(long double)PROBABILITY_OF_MOSTLY_SPAM_WORD; denom1 = denom1*(long double)(1- PROBABILITY_OF_MOSTLY_SPAM_WORD); } doc_spam_prob= (numerator/(denom1+denom2)); return 0; } I tried Float, double and even long double datatypes but still same problem. Hence, say in a 100K words document I am analyzing, if just 162 words are having 1% spam probability and remaining 99838 are conspicuously spam words, then still my app will say it as Not Spam doc because of Precision error (as numerator easily goes to ZERO)!!!. This is the first time I am hitting such issue. So how exactly should this problem be tackled?

  • Parsing command line options in Perl

    - by Jay Gridley
    Hi guys, I am parsing command line options in Perl using Getopt::Long. I am forced to use prefix - (one dash) for short commands (-s) and -- (double dash) for long commands (ex. --input=file), but problem is, that there is one special option (-r=) so it is long option for its requirement for argument, but it has to have one dash (-) prefix not double dash (--) like other long options. Is possible to setup Getopt::Long to accept these?

  • Oracle Could Lead In Cloud Business Apps Within Year

    - by Richard Lefebvre
    Below is the reprint from an article, writen by By Pete Barlas, Investor's Business Daily, published on Investorscom: Oracle (ORCL) is all but destined to become the largest seller of cloud business-software applications, analysts say, and perhaps within a year. What that means in the long run is much debated, though, as analysts aren't sure whether pricing competition might cut into profit or what other issues might develop in the fast-emerging cloud software field. But the database leader, which is either No. 1 or 2 to SAP (SAP) in business apps overall, simply has the size and scope to overtake current cloud business-app leader, Salesforce.com (CRM), analysts say. Oracle rolled out its first full suite of cloud applications on June 6. Cloud computing lets companies store data and apps on the Internet "cloud" and access it quickly and easily. The applications run the gamut of customer relationship management software to social networking sites for employees, partners and customers. For longtime software giants like Oracle, the cloud is a big switch. They get the great bulk of revenue from companies and other enterprises buying or licensing software that the customers keep on their own computer systems. Vendors also get annual maintenance fees. Analysts estimate Oracle is taking in a mere $1 billion or so a year from cloud-based software sales and services now. But while that's just a sliver of the company's $37 billion in sales last year, it's already about a third of the total sales for Salesforce, which is expected to end this year with some $3 billion in revenue. Operates In 145 Countries Oracle operates in more than 145 countries vs. about 70 for Salesforce. And Oracle has far more apps than Salesforce. Revenue doesn't equate to profit, but it's inevitable that huge Oracle will become the largest seller of cloud applications, says Trip Chowdhry, an analyst for Global Equities Research. "What Oracle has is global presence," he said. "They have two things driving the revenue: breadth of the offering and breadth of the distribution. You put those applications in those sales reps' hands and you get deployments not in just one country but several countries." At the June 6 event, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison emphasized that his company could and would beat Salesforce.com in head-to-head battles for customers. Oracle makes software to help companies manage such tasks as customer relationships, recruiting, supply chains, projects, finances and more. That range gives it an edge over all rivals, says Michael Fauscette, an analyst for research firm IDC.

  • Highlights from the Oracle Customer Experience Summit @ OpenWorld

    - by Richard Lefebvre
    The Oracle Customer Experience Summit was the first-ever event covering the full breadth of Oracle's CX portfolio -- Marketing, Sales, Commerce, and Service. The purpose of the Summit was to articulate the customer experience imperative and to showcase the suite of Oracle products that can help our customers create the best possible customer experience. This topic has always been a very important one, but now that there are so many alternative companies to do business with and because people have such public ways to voice their displeasure, it's necessary for vendors to have multiple listening posts in place to gauge consumer sentiment. They need to know what is going on in real time and be able to react quickly to turn negative situations into positive ones. Those can then be shared in a social manner to enhance the brand and turn the customer into a repeat customer. The Summit was focused on Oracle's portfolio of products and entirely dedicated to customers who are committed to building great customer experiences within their businesses. Rather than DBAs, the attendees were business people looking to collaborate with other like-minded experts and find out how Oracle can help in terms of technology, best practices, and expertise. The event was at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco as part of Oracle OpenWorld. We had eight hundred people attend, which was great for the first year. Next year, there's no doubt in my mind, we can raise that number to 5,000. Alignment and Logic Oracle's Customer Experience portfolio is made up of a combination of acquired and organic products owned by many people who are new to Oracle. We include homegrown Fusion CRM, as well as RightNow, Inquira, OPA, Vitrue, ATG, Endeca, and many others. The attendees knew of the acquisitions, so naturally they wanted to see how the products all fit together and hear the logic behind the portfolio. To tell them about our alignment, we needed to be aligned. To accomplish that, a cross functional team at Oracle agreed on the messaging so that every single Oracle presenter could cover the big picture before going deep into a product or topic. Talking about the full suite of products in one session produced overflow value for other products. And even though this internal coordination was a huge effort, everyone saw the value for our customers and for our long-term cooperation and success. Keynotes, Workshops, and Tents of Innovation We scored by having Seth Godin as our keynote speaker ? always provocative and popular. The opening keynote was a session orchestrated by Mark Hurd, Anthony Lye, and me. Mark set the stage by giving real-world examples of bad customer experiences, Anthony clearly articulated the business imperative for addressing these experiences, and I brought it all to life by taking the audience around the Customer Lifecycle and showing demos and videos, with partners included at each of the stops around the lifecycle. Brian Curran, a VP for RightNow Product Strategy, presented a session that was in high demand called The Economics of Customer Experience. People loved hearing how to build a business case and justify the cost of building a better customer experience. John Kembel, another VP for RightNow Product Strategy, held a workshop that customers raved about. It was based on the journey mapping methodology he created, which is a way to talk to customers about where they want to make improvements to their customers' experiences. He divided the audience into groups led by facilitators. Each person had the opportunity to engage with experts and peers and construct some real takeaways. The conference hotel was across from Union Square so we used that space to set up Innovation Tents. During the day we served lunch in the tents and partners showed their different innovative ideas. It was very interesting to see all the technologies and advancements. It also gave people a place to mix and mingle and to think about the fringe of where we could all take these ideas. Product Portfolio Plus Thought Leadership Of course there is always room for improvement, but the feedback on the format of the conference was positive. Ninety percent of the sessions had either a partner or a customer teamed with an Oracle presenter. The presentations weren't dry, one-way information dumps, but more interactive. I just followed up with a CEO who attended the conference with his Head of Marketing. He told me that they are using John Kembel's journey mapping methodology across the organization to pull people together. This sort of thought leadership in these highly competitive areas gives Oracle permission to engage around the technology. We have to differentiate ourselves and it's harder to do on the product side because everyone looks the same on paper. But on thought leadership ? we can, and did, take some really big steps. • pointer being freed was not allocated. Complex malloc history help

    - by Martin KS
    I've followed the guides helpfully linked here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/295778/iphone-debugging-pointer-being-freed-was-not-allocated-errors but the malloc_history is really throwing me for a loop, can anyone shed any light on the following: ALLOC 0x185c600-0x18605ff [size=16384]: thread_a068a4e0 |start | main | UIApplicationMain | -[UIApplication _run] | CFRunLoopRunInMode | CFRunLoopRunSpecific | PurpleEventCallback | _UIApplicationHandleEvent | -[UIApplication sendEvent:] | -[UIApplication handleEvent:withNewEvent:] | -[UIApplication _reportAppLaunchFinished] | CA::Transaction::commit() | CA::Context::commit_transaction(CA::Transaction*) | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CA::Context::commit_layer(_CALayer*, unsigned int, unsigned int, void*) | CA::Render::encode_set_object(CA::Render::Encoder*, unsigned long, unsigned int, CA::Render::Object*, unsigned int) | CA::Render::Layer::encode(CA::Render::Encoder*) const | CA::Render::Image::encode(CA::Render::Encoder*) const | CA::Render::Encoder::encode_data_async(void const*, unsigned long, void (*)(void const*, void*), void*) | CA::Render::Encoder::encode_bytes(void const*, unsigned long) | CA::Render::Encoder::grow(unsigned long) | realloc | malloc_zone_realloc ---- FREE 0x185c600-0x18605ff [size=16384]: thread_a068a4e0 |start | main | UIApplicationMain | -[UIApplication _run] | CFRunLoopRunInMode | CFRunLoopRunSpecific | PurpleEventCallback | _UIApplicationHandleEvent | -[UIApplication sendEvent:] | -[UIApplication handleEvent:withNewEvent:] | -[UIApplication _reportAppLaunchFinished] | CA::Transaction::commit() | CA::Context::commit_transaction(CA::Transaction*) | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CALayerCommitIfNeeded | CA::Context::commit_layer(_CALayer*, unsigned int, unsigned int, void*) | CA::Render::encode_set_object(CA::Render::Encoder*, unsigned long, unsigned int, CA::Render::Object*, unsigned int) | CA::Render::Layer::encode(CA::Render::Encoder*) const | CA::Render::Image::encode(CA::Render::Encoder*) const | CA::Render::Encoder::encode_data_async(void const*, unsigned long, void (*)(void const*, void*), void*) | CA::Render::Encoder::encode_bytes(void const*, unsigned long) | CA::Render::Encoder::grow(unsigned long) | realloc | malloc_zone_realloc ALLOC 0x185e000-0x185e62f [size=1584]: thread_a068a4e0 |start | main | UIApplicationMain | GSEventRun | GSEventRunModal | CFRunLoopRunInMode | CFRunLoopRunSpecific | __NSFireDelayedPerform | -[UITableView _userSelectRowAtIndexPath:] | -[UITableView _selectRowAtIndexPath:animated:scrollPosition:notifyDelegate:] | -[PLAlbumView tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath:] | -[PLUIAlbumViewController albumView:selectedPhoto:] | PLNotifyImagePickerOfImageAvailability | -[UIImagePickerController _imagePickerDidCompleteWithInfo:] | -[GalleryViewController imagePickerController:didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo:] | UIImageJPEGRepresentation | CGImageDestinationFinalize | _CGImagePluginWriteJPEG | writeOne | _cg_jpeg_start_compress | _cg_jinit_compress_master | _cg_jinit_c_prep_controller | alloc_sarray | alloc_large | malloc | malloc_zone_malloc ---- FREE 0x185e000-0x185e62f [size=1584]: thread_a068a4e0 |start | main | UIApplicationMain | GSEventRun | GSEventRunModal | CFRunLoopRunInMode | CFRunLoopRunSpecific | __NSFireDelayedPerform | -[UITableView _userSelectRowAtIndexPath:] | -[UITableView _selectRowAtIndexPath:animated:scrollPosition:notifyDelegate:] | -[PL AlbumView tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath:] | -[PLUIAlbumViewController albumView:selectedPhoto:] | PLNotifyImagePickerOfImageAvailability | -[UIImagePickerController _imagePickerDidCompleteWithInfo:] | -[GalleryViewController imagePickerController:didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo:] | UIImageJPEGRepresentation | CGImageDestinationFinalize | _CGImagePluginWriteJPEG | writeOne | _cg_jpeg_abort | free_pool | free ALLOC 0x185c800-0x185ea1f [size=8736]: thread_a068a4e0 |start | main | UIApplicationMain | GSEventRun | GSEventRunModal | CFRunLoopRunInMode | CFRunLoopRunSpecific | __NSFireDelayedPerform | -[UITableView _userSelectRowAtIndexPath:] | -[UITableView _selectRowAtIndexPath:animated:scrollPosition:notifyDelegate:] | -[PLAlbumView tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath:] | -[PLUIAlbumViewController albumView:selectedPhoto:] | PLNotifyImagePickerOfImageAvailability | -[UIImagePickerController _imagePickerDidCompleteWithInfo:] | -[GalleryViewController imagePickerController:didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo:] | -[UIImage initWithData:] | _UIImageRefFromData | CGImageSourceCreateImageAtIndex | makeImagePlus | _CGImagePluginInitJPEG | initImageJPEG | calloc | malloc_zone_calloc

  • Regex query: how can I search PDFs for a phrase where words in that phrase appear on more than one l

    - by Alison
    I am trying to set up an index page for the weekly magazine I work on. It is to show readers the names of companies mentioned in that weeks' issue, plus the page numbers they are appear on. I want to search all the PDF files for the week, where one PDF = one magazine page (originally made in Adobe InDesign CS3 and Adobe InCopy CS3). I have set up a list of companies I want to search for and, using PowerGREP and using delimited regular expressions, I am able to find most page numbers where a company is mentioned. However, where a company name contains two or more words, the search I am running will not pick up instances where the name appears over more than one line. For example, when looking for "CB Richard Ellis" and "Cushman & Wakefield", I got no result when the text appeared like this: DTZ beat BNP PRE, CB [line break here] Richard Ellis and Cushman & [line break here] Wakefield to secure the contract. [line end here] Could someone advise me on how to write a regular expression that will ignore white space between words and ignore line endings OR one that will look for the words including all types of white space (ie uneven spaces between words; spaces at the end of lines or line endings; and tabs (I am guessing that this info is imbedded somehow in PDF files). Here is a sample of the set of terms I have asked PowerGREP to search for: \bCB Richard Ellis\b \bCB Richard Ellis Hotels\b \bCentaur Services\b \bChapman Herbert\b \bCharities Property Fund\b \bChetwoods Architects\b \bChurch Commissioners\b \bClive Emson\b \bClothworkers’ Company\b \bColliers CRE\b \bCombined English Stores Group\b \bCommercial Estates Group\b \bConnells\b \bCooke & Powell\b \bCordea Savills\b \bCrown Estate\b \bCushman & Wakefield\b \bCWM Retail Property Advisors\b [Note that there is a delimited hard return between each \b at the end of each phrase and beginnong of the next phrase.] By the way, I am a production journalist and not usually involved in finding IT-type solutions and am finding it difficult to get to grips with the technical language on the PowerGREP site. Thanks for assistance Alison

  • Blackberry stopwatch implementation

    - by Michaela
    I'm trying to write a blackberry app that is basically a stopwatch, and displays lap times. First, I'm not sure I'm implementing the stopwatch functionality in the most optimal way. I have a LabelField (_myLabel) that displays the 'clock' - starting at 00:00. Then you hit the start button and every second the _myLabel field gets updated with how many seconds have past since the last update (should only ever increment by 1, but sometimes there is a delay and it will skip a number). I just can't think of a different way to do it - and I am new to GUI development and threads so I guess that's why. EDIT: Here is what calls the stopwatch: _timer = new Timer(); _timer.schedule(new MyTimerTask(), 250, 250); And here is the TimerTask: class MyTimerTask extends TimerTask { long currentTime; long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); public void run() { synchronized (Application.getEventLock()) { currentTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); long diff = currentTime - startTime; long min = diff / 60000; long sec = (diff % 60000) / 1000; String minStr = new Long(min).toString(); String secStr = new Long(sec).toString(); if (min < 10) minStr = "0" + minStr; if (sec < 10) secStr = "0" + secStr; _myLabel.setText(minStr + ":" + secStr); timerDisplay.deleteAll(); timerDisplay.add(_timerLabel); } } } Anyway when you stop the stopwatch it updates a historical table of lap time data. When this list gets long, the timer starts to degrade. If you try to scroll, then it gets really bad. Is there a better way to implement my stopwatch?

  • 3n+1 problem at UVa

    - by ShahradR
    Hello, I am having trouble with the first question in the Programming Challenges book by Skiena and Revilla. I keep getting a "Wrong Answer" error message, and I don't know why. I've ran my code against the sample input, and I keep getting the right answer. Anyways, if anyone could help me, I would really appreciate it :) Here is the problem URL: http://uva.onlinejudge.org/index.php?option=com_onlinejudge&Itemid=8&category=29&page=show_problem&problem=36 And here is the code:` import java.util.Scanner; public class Main { static Scanner kb = new Scanner(System.in); public static void main(String[] args) { while (kb.hasNext()) { long[] numericalInput = {0, 0}; long i = kb.nextLong(); long j = kb.nextLong(); if (i > j) { numericalInput[0] = i; numericalInput[1] = j; } else { numericalInput[0] = j; numericalInput[1] = i; } long maxIterations = 0; for (long n = numericalInput[0]; n <= numericalInput[1]; n += 1) { if (maxIterations < returnIterations(n)) maxIterations = returnIterations(n); } System.out.println(i + " " + j + " " + maxIterations); } System.exit(0); } public static long returnIterations(long num) { long iterations = 0; while (num != 1) { if (num % 2 == 0) num = num / 2; else num = 3 * num + 1; iterations += 1; } iterations += 1; return iterations; } } ` EDIT: I think the problem is with the output. I tried to make it accept all the input first and then display all the answers at once, but I didn't know the terminating condition. I resorted to this method, but I'm not sure that's what the judge wants...

  • Why do I get Detached Entity exception when upgrading Spring Boot 1.1.4 to 1.1.5

    - by mmeany
    On updating Spring Boot from 1.1.4 to 1.1.5 a simple web application started generating detached entity exceptions. Specifically, a post authentication inteceptor that bumped number of visits was causing the problem. A quick check of loaded dependencies showed that Spring Data has been updated from 1.6.1 to 1.6.2 and a further check of the change log shows a couple of issues relating to optimistic locking, version fields and JPA issues that have been fixed. Well I am using a version field and it starts out as Null following recommendation to not set in the specification. I have produced a very simple test scenario where I get detached entity exceptions if the version field starts as null or zero. If I create an entity with version 1 however then I do not get these exceptions. Is this expected behaviour or is there still something amiss? Below is the test scenario I have for this condition. In the scenario the service layer that has been annotated @Transactional. Each test case makes multiple calls to the service layer - the tests are working with detached entities as this is the scenario I am working with in the full blown application. The test case comprises four tests: Test 1 - versionNullCausesAnExceptionOnUpdate() In this test the version field in the detached object is Null. This is how I would usually create the object prior to passing to the service. This test fails with a Detached Entity exception. I would have expected this test to pass. If there is a flaw in the test then the rest of the scenario is probably moot. Test 2 - versionZeroCausesExceptionOnUpdate() In this test I have set the version to value Long(0L). This is an edge case test and included because I found reference to Zero values being used for version field in the Spring Data change log. This test fails with a Detached Entity exception. Of interest simply because the following two tests pass leaving this as an anomaly. Test 3 - versionOneDoesNotCausesExceptionOnUpdate() In this test the version field is set to value Long(1L). Not something I would usually do, but considering the notes in the Spring Data change log I decided to give it a go. This test passes. Would not usually set the version field, but this looks like a work-around until I figure out why the first test is failing. Test 4 - versionOneDoesNotCausesExceptionWithMultipleUpdates() Encouraged by the result of test 3 I pushed the scenario a step further and perform multiple updates on the entity that started life with a version of Long(1L). This test passes. Reinforcement that this may be a useable work-around. • Insert MANY key value pairs fast into berkeley db with hash access

    - by Kungi
    Hi, i'm trying to build a hash with berkeley db, which shall contain many tuples (approx 18GB of key value pairs), but in all my tests the performance of the insert operations degrades drastically over time. I've written this script to test the performance: #include<iostream> #include<db_cxx.h> #include<ctime> #define MILLION 1000000 int main () { long long a = 0; long long b = 0; int passes = 0; int i = 0; u_int32_t flags = DB_CREATE; Db* dbp = new Db(NULL,0); dbp->set_cachesize( 0, 1024 * 1024 * 1024, 1 ); int ret = dbp->open( NULL, "test.db", NULL, DB_HASH, flags, 0); time_t time1 = time(NULL); while ( passes < 100 ) { while( i < MILLION ) { Dbt key( &a, sizeof(long long) ); Dbt data( &b, sizeof(long long) ); dbp->put( NULL, &key, &data, 0); a++; b++; i++; } DbEnv* dbep = dbp->get_env(); int tmp; dbep->memp_trickle( 50, &tmp ); i=0; passes++; std::cout << "Inserted one million --> pass: " << passes << " took: " << time(NULL) - time1 << "sec" << std::endl; time1 = time(NULL); } } Perhaps you can tell me why after some time the "put" operation takes increasingly longer and maybe how to fix this. Thanks for your help, Andreas

  • Simplest way to automatically alter "const" value in Java during compile time

    - by Michael Mao
    Hi all: This is a question corresponds to my uni assignment so I am very sorry to say I cannot adopt any one of the following best practices in a short time -- you know -- assignment is due tomorrow :( link to Best way to alter const in Java on StackOverflow Basically the only task (I hope so) left for me is the performance tuning. I've got a bunch of predefined "const" values in my single-class agent source code like this: //static final values private static final long FT_THRESHOLD = 400; private static final long FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN = 50; private static final long FT_SMOOTH_PRICE_IDICATOR = 20; private static final long FT_BUY_PRICE_MODIFIER = 0; private static final long FT_LAST_ROUNDS_STARTTIME = 90; private static final long FT_AMOUNT_ADJUST_MODIFIER = 5; private static final long FT_HISTORY_PIRCES_LENGTH = 10; private static final long FT_TRACK_DURATION = 5; private static final int MAX_BED_BID_NUM_PER_AUC = 12; I can definitely alter the values manually and then compile the code to give it another go around. But the execution time for a thorough "statistic analysis" usually requires over 2000 times of execution, which will typically lasts more than half an hour on my own laptop... So I hope there is a way to alter values using other ways than dig into the source code to change the "const" values there, so I can automatically distributed compiled code to other people's PC and let them run the statistic analysis instead. One other reason for a automatically value adjustment is that I can try using my own agent to defeat itself by choosing different "const" values. Although my values are derived from previous history and statistical results, they are far from the most optimized values. I hope there is a easy way so I can quickly adopt that so to have a good sleep tonight while the computer does everything for me... :) Any hints on this sort of stuff? Any suggestion is welcomed and much appreciated.

  • SVN hangs on commit - any suggestions for troubleshooting?

    - by Richard Beier
    We're having a problem with SVN... Subversion clients such as TortoiseSVN hang when we commit any more than a few files at a time to our server. Everything appears to actually be committed successfully to the repository; but the client hangs after all the data has been transmitted. We're using version 1.4.4 of the SVN server. We use the svn:// protocol rather than http to connect. We've reproduced this problem with several clients: TortoiseSVN (1.6.10), AnkhSVN (2.1), and the Silk command-line client (1.6.12). This is happening for everyone on the team, though some people seem to be more affected than others. If someone commits only a few files, it often works; but with more than half a dozen files, it usually hangs. Does anyone have troubleshooting suggestions? This has been happening sporadically for a while, but it's become pretty consistent lately. We've been working around the issue by killing the hung SVN client, doing "svn cleanup", and then doing "svn up"; but sometimes that causes tree conflicts. Another workaround is to blow away the workspace and check it out again after every commit; but of course that's pretty annoying. Are there any diagnostics that could help us troubleshoot this? We're considering upgrading to SVN 1.6 server, and installing the server on a new machine; but we're wondering if there's an easier solution. Thanks for your help, Richard

  • Time sync fails on Hyper-V VM, but succeeds when I log in as a domain user

    - by Richard Beier
    We have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 VM running on Hyper-V (Server 2008 R2 host). The VM has Hyper-V time synchronization enabled. I noticed that the time on the VM was fast by around 25 minutes. I saw the following in the event log: The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 15 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time. The time provider NtpClient cannot reach or is currently receiving invalid time data from ourdc.ourdomain.local (ntp.d|192.168.2.18:123-192.168.2.2:123). Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from domain controller ourdc.ourdomain.local after 8 attempts to contact it. This domain controller will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new domain controller from which to synchronize. I had been logged in as a local user. (We have an old app that runs on this VM - it requires a user to be logged in at all times, and we use a non-domain user account for this.) When I logged in as a domain user, the clock almost immediately corrected itself. Running "w32tm /monitor" and "net time" as the domain user showed no errors, and indicated that our domain controller was the time source. Does anyone know what might cause this, and why logging in under a domain account fixes the problem? I'm wondering if the time will start to drift again. Thanks for your help, Richard

  • Getting a handle on GIS math, where do I start?

    - by Joshua
    I am in charge of a program that is used to create a set of nodes and paths for consumption by an autonomous ground vehicle. The program keeps track of the locations of all items in its map by indicating the item's position as being x meters north and y meters east of an origin point of 0,0. In the real world, the vehicle knows the location of the origin's lat and long, as it is determined by a dgps system and is accurate down to a couple centimeters. My program is ignorant of any lat long coordinates. It is one of my goals to modify the program to keep track of lat long coords of items in addition to an origin point and items' x,y position in relation to that origin. At first blush, it seems that I am going to modify the program to allow the lat long coords of the origin to be passed in, and after that I desire that the program will automatically calculate the lat long of every item currently in a map. From what I've researched so far, I believe that I will need to figure out the math behind converting to lat long coords from a UTM like projection where I specify the origin points and meridians etc as opposed to whatever is defined already for UTM. I've come to ask of you GIS programmers, am I on the right track? It seems to me like there is so much to wrap ones head around, and I'm not sure if the answer isn't something as simple as, "oh yea theres a conversion from meters to lat long, here" Currently, due to the nature of DGPS, the system really doesn't need to care about locations more than oh, what... 40 km? radius away from the origin. Given this, and the fact that I need to make sure that the error on my coordinates is not greater than .5 meters, do I need anything more complex than a simple lat/long to meters conversion constant? I'm knee deep in materials here. I could use some pointers about what concepts to research. Thanks much!

  • How long will a "safely stored" Solid-State-Drive (SSD) keep its data? (e.g. bank safety-deposit box)

    - by user31575
    Here's my usecase: once-and-only-once copy off photos/videos to an internal SATA Solid State Drive (SSD) put this drive in a well-ventilated, air-conditioned bank "safety deposit box" for safe keeping The question: How long can I safely store a solid-state-drive in such an environment? i.e. 0% bitrot, 100% success when "plugged in" Are some SSD drives more reliable than other for this usecase? (e.g. smaller size vs larger size, SLC vs MLC, different brands, etc) More fodder: I have read that solid state memory cards (e..g compactflash, or sd cards) have much longer durability than other media (DVD's, CD's, hard drives) for this usecase (guaranteed against bitrot/other dysfunction on the order of ~ a decades vs a year ). I don't know if this applies to "SSD hard drives". Copying to one 500Gb ssd vs 8 64gb flash drives is easier SSD SATA hard drives have no moving parts, but they have more "visible electronics" than a compact flash card. I don't know if this "visible electronics" can fail, i.e. in contr I know many will point to carbonite, other cloud backup stuff, but I like the simplicity of having physical copies and wanted to understand the risks/implications thanks,

  • Implementing a bitfield using java enums

    - by soappatrol
    Hello, I maintain a large document archive and I often use bit fields to record the status of my documents during processing or when validating them. My legacy code simply uses static int constants such as: static int DOCUMENT_STATUS_NO_STATE = 0 static int DOCUMENT_STATUS_OK = 1 static int DOCUMENT_STATUS_NO_TIF_FILE = 2 static int DOCUMENT_STATUS_NO_PDF_FILE = 4 This makes it pretty easy to indicate the state a document is in, by setting the appropriate flags. For example: status = DOCUMENT_STATUS_NO_TIF_FILE | DOCUMENT_STATUS_NO_PDF_FILE; Since the approach of using static constants is bad practice and because I would like to improve the code, I was looking to use Enums to achieve the same. There are a few requirements, one of them being the need to save the status into a database as a numeric type. So there is a need to transform the enumeration constants to a numeric value. Below is my first approach and I wonder if this is the correct way to go about this? class DocumentStatus{ public enum StatusFlag { DOCUMENT_STATUS_NOT_DEFINED(1<<0), DOCUMENT_STATUS_OK(1<<1), DOCUMENT_STATUS_MISSING_TID_DIR(1<<2), DOCUMENT_STATUS_MISSING_TIF_FILE(1<<3), DOCUMENT_STATUS_MISSING_PDF_FILE(1<<4), DOCUMENT_STATUS_MISSING_OCR_FILE(1<<5), DOCUMENT_STATUS_PAGE_COUNT_TIF(1<<6), DOCUMENT_STATUS_PAGE_COUNT_PDF(1<<7), DOCUMENT_STATUS_UNAVAILABLE(1<<8), private final long statusFlagValue; StatusFlag(long statusFlagValue) { this.statusFlagValue = statusFlagValue } public long getStatusFlagValue(){ return statusFlagValue } } /** * Translates a numeric status code into a Set of StatusFlag enums * @param numeric statusValue * @return EnumSet representing a documents status */ public EnumSet<StatusFlag> getStatusFlags(long statusValue) { EnumSet statusFlags = EnumSet.noneOf(StatusFlag.class) StatusFlag.each { statusFlag -> long flagValue = statusFlag.statusFlagValue if ( (flagValue&statusValue ) == flagValue ) { statusFlags.add(statusFlag) } } return statusFlags } /** * Translates a set of StatusFlag enums into a numeric status code * @param Set if statusFlags * @return numeric representation of the document status */ public long getStatusValue(Set<StatusFlag> flags) { long value=0 flags.each { statusFlag -> value|=statusFlag.getStatusFlagValue() } return value } public static void main(String[] args) { DocumentStatus ds = new DocumentStatus(); Set statusFlags = EnumSet.of( StatusFlag.DOCUMENT_STATUS_OK, StatusFlag.DOCUMENT_STATUS_UNAVAILABLE) assert ds.getStatusValue( statusFlags )==258 // 0000.0001|0000.0010 long numericStatusCode = 56 statusFlags = ds.getStatusFlags(numericStatusCode) assert !statusFlags.contains(StatusFlag.DOCUMENT_STATUS_OK) assert statusFlags.contains(StatusFlag.DOCUMENT_STATUS_MISSING_TIF_FILE) assert statusFlags.contains(StatusFlag.DOCUMENT_STATUS_MISSING_PDF_FILE) assert statusFlags.contains(StatusFlag.DOCUMENT_STATUS_MISSING_OCR_FILE) } }
