• Developing ASP.NET MVC UI Extensions - best approach

  What are the best practices in developing rich UI extensions for ASP.NET MVC (I mean asynchronous / partial loading, slick effects, skinning etc) ? I saw that Telerik has an MVC suite of extensions, but haven't tried them yet, so I cannot comment on them. My biggest concern as of the moment is how to structure the code of my extensions so that C#, ASP markup, and JQuery remain separate from each other, yet encapsulated in a way that the extension must be easy to distribute and reuse. I know that the user control approach had many flaws, yet it sort of allowed application developers to just reference a control, set some parameters and get it going in a few minutes. I'd like to achieve the same kind of portability/reusability as I still keep the code easy to extend and build upon. Now, some ideas that come to mind as topics for discussion are: template helpers vs. extension method helpers or a possible integration efficient use of jQuery - naming conventions - - asynchronous action loading - etc you can add whatever comes to your mind

So it looks something like this: MyInlineFormSet = inlineformset_factory(MyMainModel, MyInlineModel, form=MyCustomInlineModelForm) I am rendering this inlineformset manually in a template so that I have more control over widgets and javascript. So I go in a loop like {% for form in myformset.forms %} and then manually render each field as described on this page http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/forms/#customizing-the-form-template The formset has can_delete = True or can_delete = False depending on whether the user is creating new objects or editing existing ones. Question is, how do I manually render the can_delete checkbox?

  Is there any standards/guidelines/good practices for making websites with support of different content and UI? I'm interesting in articles/tutorials, that cover this topics. E.g. there going to be website for multiple countries. And user should have possibility to select UI and content languages separately. I assume that not all content will be translated, so there should be some mechanism for showing "default language" content for specific page. But again, should this "default" be per site, or per country? E.g. in some countries (Belgium, Finland) there are several official languages. If one language is unavailable, should default be second one, or English? Another example: many people prefer English UI (no mater of their origin), but want local scales (inches, meters) and local services. I don't care much about programing languages now, just want to understand what users are expected, what should be scope, and what are good practices.

  Hi, can anyone tell me, how to retrieve joined result from multiple tables in cakePHP ( using cakePHP mvc architecture). For example, I have three tables to join (tbl_topics, tbl_items, tbl_votes. Their relationship is defined as following: a topic can have many items and an item can have many votes. Now I want to retrieve a list of topics with the count of all votes on all items for each topic. The SQL query for this is written below: SELECT Topic.*, count(Vote.id) voteCount FROM tbl_topics AS Topic LEFT OUTER JOIN tbl_items AS Item ON (Topic.id = Item.topic_id) LEFT OUTER JOIN tbl_votes AS Vote ON (Item.id = Vote.item_id); My problem is I can do it easily using $this-><Model Name>->query function, but this requires sql code to be written in the controller which I don't want. I'm trying to find out any other way to do this (like find()).

  Hey, I'm trying to create a game similar to this (Note:When you click 'play', there are SFX in the game which you can't seem to turn off, so you may want to check volume).   Hi, I would like to have a ListView that would have have items similar to Microsoft Outlook inbox with items arranged by Conversations (see the attached photo). An item can either be a simple textblock containing the topic of the conversation (on the photo this are the blue lines) or it can contain email information specified by the ListView's header. It would be best if the items with conversation topics would be push buttons so that emails inside that conversation could be shown or hidden by pressing this button. Any ideas how can I achieve this? Do I specify two ListViewItem templates? If yes, how do I tell in the code which template to use for each item? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!   Hi. I have trouble with deleting all layer's sublayers. I do this manually, but it's unwanted code clutter. I found many topics about this in google, but no answer. I tried to do something like this: for(CALayer *layer in rootLayer.sublayers) { [layer removeFromSublayer]; } but it didn't work. Also, i tried to clone rootLayer.sublayers into separate NSArray, but result was the same. Any ideas? regards, radex PS. sorry for my English. Edit: I thought it works now, but I was wrong.   I am trying to implement a naive bayseian approach to find the topic of a given document or stream of words. Is there are Naive Bayesian approach that i might be able to look up for this ? Also, i am trying to improve my dictionary as i go along. Initially, i have a bunch of words that map to a topics (hard-coded). Depending on the occurrence of the words other than the ones that are already mapped. And depending on the occurrences of these words i want to add them to the mappings, hence improving and learning about new words that map to topic. And also changing the probabilities of words. How should i go about doing this ? Is my approach the right one ? Which programming language would be best suited for the implementation ?

Hadoop+Hive looks promissing, but the documentation looks poor and the version number is less than 1.0 . I heard about Hypertable, Pentaho, MongoDB .... Do you have any recommendations ? • SWFUpload is it possible to upload multiple files to a single php script execution

  Hello, I'm trying to implement SWFUpload into an existing PHP upload funcitonality. My current backend script however expects 2 fiels to be uploaded in a single php script execution. (e.g. it excepts the $_FILES parameters to contain 2 entries). So i'm queueing 2 files with SWFUpload and start uploading them. However it appears SWFLUpload calls the php backend script for each queued file. I'd rather modify SWFUpload to send the files with a single backend script execution instead on having to adjust the backend script. Is anyone familiar with this? I've searched various resources (like the SWFUploads docs and forum, but have not found similiar topics. Thanks in advance

  Yes, I have read most of the topics here, but I can't find an answer that works. I have Three drop-down lists. The first is databound to grab distinct experiment names. The user selects, page posts back, and the second drop-down menu displays distinct time points. This is where I need help. I need to add an item to THAT drop-down list whose ID, DataTextField, DataValueField are all TimePt. I have 2 tables, one is users id, name, email.... and second for friends is named friends :) user1_id, user2_id now i need to get from the database all of the user info for friends of my friends, and next level friends, the Friend of my of my Friends of my Friends, those should be 2 separate queries. Of course the search should exclude me, and be distinct. Please help.

I've just created custom ASP.NET Membership, Role, Profile and Session State providers, and I was wondering whether there exists a test suite or something similar to test the implementation of the providers. I've checked some of the open source providers I could find (like the NauckIt.PostgreSQL provider), but neither of them contained unit tests, and all of the forum topics I've found mentioned only a few test cases (like checking whether creating a user works), but this is clearly not a complete test suite for a Membership provider. (And I couldn't find anything for the other three providers) Are there more or less complete test suites for the above mentioned providers, or are there custom providers out there that have at least some testing avaialable?

  Hi, I'm currently creating an alarm. I use NSTimer to schedule my alarms. My problem is when the device was put into locked mode my NSTimer doesn't fire. I think that the NSTimer will not fire because my app goes to suspended state when it is lock. Can you help me find a solution to my problem? I've found some topics about UIBackgroundModes, but I don't know how it will help me. Thanks.. The problem in UILocalNotification is when the device was in silent, the sound will not be hear. My implementation was I'm using NSTimer to fire an alarm when the app is in foreground or device is locked but app currently running. When the applicationDidEnterBackground: is called I schedule the UILocalNotification as the alarm.

• Reformat a YouTube URL using jQuery

  I am using the YouTube Channel jQuery script to pull in data from a YouTube channel. Then I'm using an iFrame on the page to display the videos without leaving the site. The only problem is that the URLs the Channel plugin is pulling in don't quite work with my iFrame concept. They load the whole YouTube page instead of just the video. I figured out a workaround that basically I reformat the URL and tell it to display fullscreen and to autoplay will do what I would like it to do. The URLs are currently formatted like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxxxxxx&feature=youtube_gdata and I need them to be rewritten as http://www.youtube.com/v/xxxxxxxxx?fs=1&autoplay=1 I've seen a couple of similar topics here on SO, but given my limited jQuery and regex talents I wasn't able to get anything to work for my purposes.

• Synchronising local and remote DB

  Hi everyone, I have a general question about DB synchronisation. So, I'm developing a website locally (PHP + MySQL) and I would like to be able to synchronise at least the structure (and maybe the contents) of the two DB when one of the two is changed (normally I would change the local copy). Right now what I'm doing is to use mysqldump to dump the modified tables and then import them in the remote DB or do it by hand if the changes are minimal. However I find this tedious and error-prone. For the PHP I'm currently using Quanta+ which has the handy feature of finding files that have changed and just upload those. Is there something similar for MySQL? Otherwise how do you keep your DBs synchronised?   Enterprise software are built using technologies/softwares/terminologies/APIs such as EJB, JBoss, Seam, Hibernate(JPA), Maven, Eclipse, Spring, JTS, JMS, JNDI etc. I know there are great books out there for each of these individually, however can someone suggest a book or two that covers all (or most of) these topics in lesser detail and gives examples of how these are integrated? I have intentionally left the client side stuff out because its highly unlikely a single book would cover that much. If anyone knows of a book (or books) that cover most of or various combinations (like EJB, Hibernate, Spring and Seam) of these technologies, please do suggest the same. The idea is not to become an expert in all however know about them in reasonable detail and why each one is required.
