• rdoc and the "--accessor" option

  rdoc --help says: --accessor, -A accessorname[,..] comma separated list of additional class methods that should be treated like 'attr_reader' and friends. Option may be repeated. Each accessorname may have '=text' appended, in which case that text appears where the r/w/rw appears for normal accessors. Does anyone have any working examples of doing this (both the accessor method definition and the rdoc command invocation)? No matter what combination I try, my accessors will not show up in the RDoc output. Thanks.

  Hi Guys, I am in a bit of a rut with a cURL issue. The post works greate, the data is POSTED just fine and received ok, but the url of the posted page never appears in the browser after the cURL session is executed, for example look at the following code: $ch = curl_init("http://localhost/eterniti/cart-step-1.php"); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HEADER, false); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POST, true); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, "error=1&em=$em&fname=$fname&lname=$lname&email1=$email1&email2=$email2&code=$code&area=$area&number=$num&mobile=$mobile&address1=$address1&address2=$address2&address3=$address3&suburb=$suburb&postcode=$postcode&country=$country"); curl_exec($ch); curl_close($ch); The post works fine and I am taken to the cart-step-1.php where I can process the posted data, HOWEVER the location in the URL address bar of the browser remains that of the script page, in this case proc_xxxxxx.php Any ideas how to get the URL address to reflect the page I am actually POSTED to? • Optimizing a large iteration of PHP objects (EAV-based)

  I am currently working on a project that utilizes the EAV model. This turns out to work quite well, but like many others I am now stumbling upon some performance issues. The data set in this particular case consists of aproximately 2500 entities, each with aprox. 150 attributes. Each entity and each attribute is represented by a PHP-object. Since most parts of the application only iterate through a filtered set of entities, we have not had very large issues yet. Now, however, I am working on an algorithm that requires iteration over the entire dataset, which causes a major impact on performance. This information is perhaps not very much to work with, but since this is an architectural problem, I am hoping for a architectural pattern to help me on the way as well. Each entity, including it's attributes takes up aprox. 500KB of memory.

  I have an array composed of arrays. I want to sort the parent array by a property of the child arrays. Here's an example array(2) { [0]=> array(3) { [0]=> string(6) "105945" [1]=> string(10) "First name" [2]=> float(0.080878465391) } [1]=> array(3) { [0]=> string(6) "109145" [1]=> string(11) "Second name" [2]=> float(0.0504154818384) } I would like to sort the parent array by [2] ascending in the child arrays, so in this case the result would be the child arrays reversed (.05, 08). Is this possible using any of the numerous PHP sort functions?

The code sets the GNOME terminal title to user@somehost (obviously with the real user name and host name). However some hosts have tcsh as login shell, so I need to translate the code into tcsh and add it to the .tcshrc . I considered to somehow source another file with the bash code from inside the .tcshrc file, but I couldn't make it work.

• Lombok with Play 2

  What about Lombok integration with Play Framework 2? I really like Lombok it make my code more readable and less boilerplate. And Play Framework is wonderful too. But there is a great trouble in case if you going to mixup them. Main reason is that scala temlates in play project compiled before domain classes. So Lombok, which itself is compiler's hack do not generate accessors for that time. The question is: if it any ways to make it work? I found some discussions in Google Groups, but they do not provide any reasonable solution. So have you got any success with it? And.. why guys from Play Framework project do not provide some Lombok-like solution? Anyway Play is full of code-generation magic and shadow compiling... so, why not?

• In OpenGL vertex shader, gl_Position doesn't get homogenized..

  Hi everyone, I was expecting gl_Position to automatically get homogenized (divided by w), but it seems not working.. Why do the followings make different results? 1) void main() { vec4 p; ... omitted ... gl_Position = projectionMatrix * p; } 2) ... same as above ... p = projectionMatrix * p; gl_Position = p / p.w; I think the two are supposed to generate the same results, but it seems it's not the case. 1 doesn't work while 2 is working as expected.. Could it possibly be a precision problem? Am I missing something? This is driving me almost crazy.. helps needed. Many thanks in advance!

• Remote Control software for Mac

  One of the things I like about Microsoft's RDC Client is that the resolution of the experience is set by the client and not, say, a physical monitor connected to the host, as is the case with VNC; the latter being the protocol used by Mac. This means that even though I'm connecting to a notebook with a 1280x800 physical resolution, via RDC I can run it at 2560x1600 on my 30" monitor. However, that only seems to work for RDC. Does anyone know of something I can run on the Mac that will allow me to remotely control it at a different resolution than what is physically set? TIA, Mark

• COM/DCOM problem when hosting executable is run as a service

  I am struggling for days now with the following problem: We have an executable that hosts a COM server, say x.exe. The COM object is instantiated as follows on the calling site: hRes = CoCreateInstance(CLSID_InterceptX, NULL, CLSCTX_SERVER, IID_IInterceptX, (void**)&pInterceptX); It all works fine when x runs as an regular application. We have a tool (I don't know how it works) that encapsulates x.exe so that it runs as a service under Windows (x.exe is a running process). In this case, we never receive a COM call in x.exe (validated by logging). Here is the weird part: From logging the calling site, I can tell that the COM object has been successfully instantiated and also the call to an interface function does not produce an error (SUCEEDED(hres) is true). Any ideas?

• Most optimized way to calculate modulus in C

  I have minimize cost of calculating modulus in C. say I have a number x and n is the number which will divide x when n == 65536 (which happens to be 2^16): mod = x % n (11 assembly instructions as produced by GCC) or mod = x & 0xffff which is equal to mod = x & 65535 (4 assembly instructions) so, GCC doesn't optimize it to this extent. In my case n is not x^(int) but is largest prime less than 2^16 which is 65521 as I showed for n == 2^16, bit-wise operations can optimize the computation. What bit-wise operations can I preform when n == 65521 to calculate modulus.

• Problem with Hyperic monitoring on CloudFoundry - frequent alerts

  Hi, I'm running single instance CloudFoundry configuration with one web application. I turned on Hyperic monitoring with notification for case of web app unavailability. Now I randomly receive alert emails (Subject "An alert has been triggered - Deployment myapp - context unavailable") that the application is not running, but it obviously is running fine. In access log of Apache I see two requests every 15 seconds: 127.0.0.1 - - [17/Mar/2010:15:37:33 +0100] "GET /server-status?auto HTTP/1.1" 200 438 "-" "Jakarta Commons-HttpClient/3.1" 127.0.0.1 - - [17/Mar/2010:15:37:33 +0100] "GET /myapp HTTP/1.1" 200 - "-" "Jakarta Commons-HttpClient/3.1" At the time when I get the alert emails, everything in log still seems to be fine - two requests. Do you have idea what could be wrong? Did anybody have this kind of problem and solve it? Thanks, P

  I need to decide on which one to use. My case is pretty simple. I need to convert a simple POJO/Bean to XML, and then back. Nothing special. One thing I am looking for is it should include the parent properties as well. Best would be if it can work on super type, which can be just a marker interface. If anyone can compare these two with cons and pros, and which thing is missing in which one. I know that XStream supports JSON too, thats a plus. But Simple looked simpler in a glance, if we set JSON aside. Whats the future of Simple in terms of development and community? XStream is quite popular I believe, even the word, "XStream", hit many threads on SO. Thanks.

• selenium RC doesnt run the whole test suite

  I'm trying to run an html testSuite with Selenium RC. The browser starts, the first test runs, and it stops. It doesnt continue to the second test case. I named both the test cases with .html extension. IAm using Firefox. If i run them manually , individually from the selenium RC test runner window they run ok. what am i missing, this seems pretty simple but yet iam not able to get this working.   If you wrap a call to HttpResponse.End within a try catch block, the ThreadAbortException would automatically be re-raised. I assume this is the case even if you wrap the try catch block in a try catch block. How can I accomplish the same thing?   I'm trying to make this command: sed bla bla filename | awk '{printf "%s %s_entry_%.3f %.3f %.3f %.3f",$1,$3,$4,$5,$6,$7}' But the thing is, i want the %.3f part to be variable. So in one case it could be %.3f and in another it could be %.3f %.3f %.3f. So i'll just use a static one in my example code for clarity. So if i want 4 of these %.3f and put them in variable $values like so: values="%.3f %.3f %.3f %.3f" Then how can i put this string in the awk expression, without making awk to just put literally "${values}" in there. • Using Parallel Extensions with ThreadStatic attribute. Could it leak memory?

  I'm using Parallel Extensions fairly heavily and I've just now encountered a case where using thread locla storrage might be sensible to allow re-use of objects by worker threads. As such I was lookign at the ThreadStatic attribute which marks a static field/variable as having a unique value per thread. It seems to me that it would be unwise to use PE with the ThreadStatic attribute without any guarantee of thread re-use by PE. That is, if threads are created and destroyed to some degree would the variables (and thus objects they point to) remain in thread local storage for some indeterminate amount of time, thus causing a memory leak? Or perhaps the thread storage is tied to the threads and disposed of when the threads are disposed? But then you still potentially have threads in a pool that are longed lived and that accumulate thread local storage from various pieces of code the threads are used for. Is there a better approach to obtaining thread local storage with PE? Thankyou.

  I have a few software developers working for my projects and I would like to provide them a way to register time they spent on real development. There is good will to register development hours, no force, but we try to avoid techniques like excel sheets register because this is so uncomfortable. I can track svn commits, but this is unreliable. Developers also helps supporting different projects during the day, so assuming they work on one project by whole day is not true. I've seen utilities that popups a message every hour to confirm the project you're working on but this is annoying. Some kind of active-window-title-anaylzer might help (you can get solution name from there in the case of Visual Studio) but I have no experience with such idea. If you have any experience with programmers/designers work hours registration, please share with me. Thanks

The exception pops up saying that it is unhandled, and then the service stops. I even tried putting some code in the event handler, in case it was getting optimized away. Is this not the proper way to set up unhandled exception handling in a windows service?

  I'm trying to use file_get_contentsO() to get the response from a server and this error was encountered. Could someone tell me what is the reason and how to fix it? The portion of the code is: $api = "http://smpp5.routesms.com:8080/bulksms/sendsms?username=$username&password=$password&source=$source&destination=$destin&dlr=$dlr&type=$type&message=$message"; $resp = file_get_contents($api); The server responded correctly while I pasted the url in the browser. I learned that this is caused by the server rejecting the client's HTTP version, but I have no idea why that is happening in my case. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

In this tutorial we'll see how we can use it so we can keep track of the changes done to our database creating a new application using the code first approach. If you don't have a clear idea about how code first works we highly recommend you to check this subject before going further with this tutorial. Creating our Model and Database with Code First  From VS 2010  1. Create a new console application 2.  Add the latest Entity Framework official package using Package Manager Console (Tools Menu, then Library Package Manager -> Package Manager Console). In the Package Manager Console we have to type  Install-Package EntityFramework This will add the latest version of this library.  We will also need to make some changes to your config file. A <configSections> was added which contains the version you have from EntityFramework.  An <entityFramework> section was also added where you can set up some initialization. This section is optional and by default is generated to use SQL Express. Since we don't need it for now (we'll see more about it below) let's leave this section empty as shown below. 3. Create a new Model with a simple entity. 4. Enable Migrations to generate the our Configuration class. In the Package Manager Console we have to type  Enable-Migrations; This will make some changes in our application. It will create a new folder called Migrations where all the migrations representing the changes we do to our model.  It will also create a Configuration class that we'll be using to initialize our SQL Generator and some other values like if we want to enable Automatic Migrations.  You can see that it already has the name of our DbContext. You can also create you Configuration class manually. 5. Specify our Model Provider. We need to specify in our Class Configuration that we'll be using MySQLClient since this is not part of the generated code. Also please make sure you have added the MySql.Data and the MySql.Data.Entity references to your project. using MySql.Data.Entity;   // Add the MySQL.Data.Entity namespace public Configuration() { this.AutomaticMigrationsEnabled = false; SetSqlGenerator("MySql.Data.MySqlClient", new MySql.Data.Entity.MySqlMigrationSqlGenerator());    // This will add our MySQLClient as SQL Generator } 6. Add our Data Provider and set up our connection string <connectionStrings> <add name="PersonalContext" connectionString="server=localhost;User Id=root;database=Personal;" providerName="MySql.Data.MySqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> <system.data> <DbProviderFactories> <remove invariant="MySql.Data.MySqlClient" /> <add name="MySQL Data Provider" invariant="MySql.Data.MySqlClient" description=".Net Framework Data Provider for MySQL" type="MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlClientFactory, MySql.Data, Version=6.6.2.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d" /> </DbProviderFactories> </system.data> * The version recommended to use of Connector/Net is 6.6.2 or earlier. At this point we can create our database and then start working with Migrations. So let's do some data access so our database get's created. You can run your application and you'll get your database Personal as specified in our config file. Add our first migration Migrations are a great resource as we can have a record for all the changes done and will generate the MySQL statements required to apply these changes to the database. Let's add a new property to our Person class public string Email { get; set; } If you try to run your application it will throw an exception saying  The model backing the 'PersonelContext' context has changed since the database was created. Consider using Code First Migrations to update the database (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=238269). So as suggested let's add our first migration for this change. In the Package Manager Console let's type Add-Migration AddEmailColumn Now we have the corresponding class which generate the necessary operations to update our database. namespace MigrationsFromScratch.Migrations { using System.Data.Entity.Migrations; public partial class AddEmailColumn : DbMigration { public override void Up(){ AddColumn("People", "Email", c => c.String(unicode: false)); } public override void Down() { DropColumn("People", "Email"); } } } In the Package Manager Console let's type Update-Database Now you can check your database to see all changes were succesfully applied. Now let's add a second change and generate our second migration public class Person   {       [Key]       public int PersonId { get; set;}       public string Name { get; set; }       public string Address {get; set;}       public string Email { get; set; }       public List<Skill> Skills { get; set; }   }   public class Skill   {     [Key]     public int SkillId { get; set; }     public string Description { get; set; }   }   public class PersonelContext : DbContext   {     public DbSet<Person> Persons { get; set; }     public DbSet<Skill> Skills { get; set; }   } If you would like to customize any part of this code you can do that at this step. You can see there is the up method which can update your database and the down that can revert the changes done. If you customize any code you should make sure to customize in both methods. Now let's apply this change. Update-database -verbose I added the verbose flag so you can see all the SQL generated statements to be run. Downgrading changes So far we have always upgraded to the latest migration, but there may be times when you want downgrade to a specific migration. Let's say we want to return to the status we have before our last migration. We can use the -TargetMigration option to specify the migration we'd like to return. Also you can use the -verbose flag. If you like to go  back to the Initial state you can do: Update-Database -TargetMigration:$InitialDatabase  or equivalent: Update-Database -TargetMigration:0  Migrations doesn't allow by default a migration that would ocurr in a data loss. One case when you can got this message is for example in a DropColumn operation. You can override this configuration by setting AutomaticMigrationDataLossAllowed to true in the configuration class. Also you can set your Database Initializer in case you want that these Migrations can be applied automatically and you don't have to go all the way through creating a migration and updating later the changes. Let's see how. Database Initialization by Code We can specify an initialization strategy by using Database.SetInitializer (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg679461(v=vs.103)). One of the strategies that I found very useful when you are at a development stage (I mean not for production) is the MigrateDatabaseToLatestVersion. This strategy will make all the necessary migrations each time there is a change in our model that needs a database replication, this also implies that we have to enable AutomaticMigrationsEnabled flag in our Configuration class. public Configuration()         {             AutomaticMigrationsEnabled = true;             AutomaticMigrationDataLossAllowed = true;             SetSqlGenerator("MySql.Data.MySqlClient", new MySql.Data.Entity.MySqlMigrationSqlGenerator());    // This will add our MySQLClient as SQL Generator          } In the new EntityFramework section of your Config file we can set this at a context level basis.  The syntax is as follows: <contexts> <context type="Custom DbContext name, Assembly name"> <databaseInitializer type="System.Data.Entity.MigrateDatabaseToLatestVersion`2[[ Custom DbContext name, Assembly name],  [Configuration class name, Assembly name]],  EntityFramework" /> </context> </contexts> In our example this would be: The syntax is kind of odd but very convenient. This way all changes will always be applied when we do any data access in our application. There are a lot of new things to explore in EF 4.3.1 and Migrations so we'll continue writing some more posts about it. • How to debug unreleased COM references from managed code?

  I have been searching for a tool to debug unreleased COM references, that usually cause e.g. Word/Outlook processes to hang in memory in case the code does not call Marshal.ReleaseCOMObject on all COM instances correctly. (Outlook 2007 partially fixes this for outlook addins, but this is a generic question). Is there a tool that would display at least a list of COM references (by type) held by managed code? Ideally, it would also display memory profiler-style object trees helping to debug where the reference increment occured. Debugging at runtime is not that important as being able to attach to a hung process - because the problem typically occurs when the code is done with the COM interface and someone forgot to release something - the application (e.g. winword) hangs in memory even after the calling managed application quits. If such tool does not exist, what is the (technical?) reason? It would be very useful for debugging a lot of otherwise very hard to find problems when working with COM interop.
