Trouble with go tour crawler exercise

I'm going through the go tour and I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the language except for concurrency. On slide 71 there is an exercise that asks the reader to parallelize a web crawler (and to make it not cover repeats but I haven't gotten there yet.) If I put a defer close(ch) somewhere in the Crawl method, then I end up writing to a closed channel in one of the spawned goroutines, since the method will finish execution before the spawned goroutines do. If I omit the call to close(ch), as is shown in my example code, the program deadlocks after all the goroutines finish executing but the main thread is still waiting on the channel in the for loop since the channel was never closed.

hey guys, i am trying to create a spreadsheet which automagically gives a grade to a student based on their marks they got. Its still mising the C- grade and anything lower should be awarded a D mark. How to perform a Depth First Search iteratively using async/parallel processing?

Here is a method that does a DFS search and returns a list of all items given a top level item id. How could I modify this to take advantage of parallel processing? Currently, the call to get the sub items is made one by one for each item in the stack. It would be nice if I could get the sub items for multiple items in the stack at the same time, and populate my return list faster. Need help/guidance about creating a desktop application with gui

I'm planning to do an Desktop application using Python, to learn some Desktop concepts. I'm going to use GTK or Qt, I still haven't decided which one. Fact is: I would like to create an application with the possibility to be called from command line, AND using a GUI. So it would be useful for cmd fans, and GUI users as well. It would be interesting to create a web interface too in the future, so it could be run in a server somewhere using an html interface created with a template language. I'm thinking about two approaches: - Creating a "model" with a simple interface which is called from a desktop/web implementation; - Creating a "model" with an html interface, and embeb a browser component so I could reuse all the code in both desktop/web scenarios. My question is: which exactly concepts are involved in this project? What advantages/disadvantages each approach has? Are they possible? By naming "interface", I'm planning to just do some interfaces.py files with def calls. Is this a bad approach? I would like to know some book recommendations, or resources to both options - or source code from projects which share the same GUI/cmd/web goals I'm after. Thanks in advance!

.NET security mechanism to restrict access between two Types in the same project?

Question: Is there a mechanism in the .NET Framework to hide one custom Type from another without using separate projects/assemblies? I'm using C# with ASP.NET in a Website project. Note: I'm not talking about access modifiers to hide members of a Type from another type - I mean to hide the Type itself. Background: I'm working in an ASP.NET Website project and the team has decided not to use separate project assemblies for different software layers. Therefore I'm looking for a way to have, for example, a DataAccess/ folder of which I disallow its classes to access other Types in the same ASP.NET Website project. In other words I want to fake the layers and have some kind of security mechanism around each layer to prevent it from accessing another. Obviously there's not a way to enforce this restriction using language-specific OO keywords so I am looking for something else, for example: maybe a permission framework or code access mechanism, maybe something that uses meta data like Attributes. Even something that restricts one namespace from accessing another. I'm unsure the final form it might take. If this were C++ I'd likely be using friend to make as solution, which doesn't translate to C# internal in this case although they're often compared. I don't really care whether the solution actually hides Types from each other or just makes them inaccessible; however I don't want to lock down one Type from all others, another reason access modifiers are not a solution. A runtime or design time answer will suffice. Looking for something easy to implement otherwise it's not worth the effort ...

What is better for a student programming in C++ to learn for writing GUI: C# vs QT?

I'm a teacher(instructor) of CS in the university. The course is based on Cormen and Knuth and students program algorithms in C++. But sometimes it is good to show how an algorithm works or just a result of task through GUI. Also in my opinion it's very imporant to be able to write full programs. They will have courses concerning GUI but a three years, later, in fact, before graduatuion. I think that they should be able to write simple GUI applications earlier. So I want to teach them it. How do you think, what is more useful for them to learn: programming GUI with QT or writing GUI in C# and calling unmanaged C++ library? Update. For developing C++ applications students use MS Visual studio, so C# is already installed. But QT AFAIK also can be integrated into VS. I have following pros of C# (some were suggested there in answers): The need to make an additional layer. It's more work, but it forces you explicitly specify contract between GUI and processing data. The border between GUI and algorithms becomes very clear. It's more popular among employers. At least, in Russia where we live. It's rather common to write performance-critical algorithms in C++ and PInvoke them from well-looking C# application/ASP.Net website. Maybe it is not so widespread in the rest of the world but in Russia Windows is very popular, especially in companies and corporations due to some reasons, so most of b2b applications are Windows applications. Rapid development. It's much quicker to code in .Net then in C++ due to many reasons. And the con is that it's a new language with own specific for students. And the mess with invoking calls to library.

Hi guys, I want to do some numerical stuff in Erlang like this: You've got an array with the following values: [2,3,4] In each iteration, you calculate 0.1 * [n-1] + 0.7 *[n] + 0.2 * [n+1] This becomes the new [n]. If n == 0 then [n-1] = 0. If [n] == length of array then [n] = 0. So I try an example: [2,3,4] calculations: 0.1 * 0 + 0.7 * 2 + 0.2 * 3 = 2 0.1 * 2 + 0.7 * 3 + 0.2 * 4 = 3.1 0.1 * 3 + 0.7 * 4 + 0.2 * 0 = 3.1 So [2,3,4] becomes to [2, 3.1, 3.1] after one iteration. I know how to write this in a non-functional language like C. But I have difficulties to imagine, how this could be done in Erlang. I found some tutorials on how you read a file to a list. So this is not the problem. How can I spawn different Erlang processes that each process has one element of the list? How can I do calculations by communicating with 'the neighbors', so that the neighbors know where their neigbors are generically, without specifying each? How can I collect the data into a list? Eventually, is it possible to solve that problem in Erlang at all? Thanks for your help.

Is it a good practice for a .js file to rely on variables declared in the including html

It can be php, jsp, asp, whatever. The point is - it is dynamic, and hence it can't be part of the .js file (which is static). So, is it OK for the static javascript file to rely on these externally defined configuration variables? (they are mainly configuration, of course). Or is it preferred to make the .js file be served dynamically as well (i.e. make it a .php / .jsp, with the proper Content-Type), and have these values defined in there.

I have build a litte asp.net form that searches for something and displays the results. I want to highlight the search string within the search results. Now that would be ok if there was a way to find out how long the match in "text" is. Remember that this length can be != substring.Length. So how do I find out the length of the match that IndexOf produces in the presence of ligatures and exotic language characters (ligatures in this case)?

javascript not firing when asp.net user control loads

I am trying to fire a Javascript call when an ASP.net user control to an aspx page. The Web site allows users to add user controls to a page (similar to adding a widget etc to a page like google widgets). But when the control is added the javascript does not fire, only if the page is refreshed will it fire the javascript. IF the next time the website is accessd and the controlis still there the javascript fires too. Do I need to use the RegisterClientScript method to register the call (setAutoTimer()) on the control load or OnPreRender event. Does the Java Memory Model (JSR-133) imply that entering a monitor flushes the CPU data cache(s)?

There is something that bugs me with the Java memory model (if i even understand everything correctly). If there are two threads A and B, there are no guarantees that B will ever see a value written by A, unless both A and B synchronize on the same monitor. For any system architecture that guarantees cache coherency between threads, there is no problem. But if the architecture does not support cache coherency in hardware, this essentially means that whenever a thread enters a monitor, all memory changes made before must be commited to main memory, and the cache must be invalidated. And it needs to be the entire data cache, not just a few lines, since the monitor has no information which variables in memory it guards. But that would surely impact performance of any application that needs to synchronize frequently (especially things like job queues with short running jobs). So can Java work reasonably well on architectures without hardware cache-coherency? If not, why doesn't the memory model make stronger guarantees about visibility? Wouldn't it be more efficient if the language would require information what is guarded by a monitor? As i see it the memory model gives us the worst of both worlds, the absolute need to synchronize, even if cache coherency is guaranteed in hardware, and on the other hand bad performance on incoherent architectures (full cache flushes). So shouldn't it be more strict (require information what is guarded by a monitor) or more lose and restrict potential platforms to cache-coherent architectures? As it is now, it doesn't make too much sense to me. Can somebody clear up why this specific memory model was choosen? EDIT: My use of strict and lose was a bad choice in retrospect. I used "strict" for the case where less guarantees are made and "lose" for the opposite. To avoid confusion, its probably better to speak in terms of stronger or weaker guarantees.

Help Needed Finding a Programmer

Good Morning, I am trying to find a programmer to code a piece of custom software for my business. I plan on using this software to manage my business, and possibly sell it to other companies (in the same industry) at a later date. I've never hired a programmer before, so I'm not sure what to expect or where to begin. I know exactly what features I need, and how I want it laid out, I just need someone who can take my ideas and make it happen. This software will be used to manage customer information, and keep track of orders. What I think I need: * SQL Server or similar database that will be located at our office. * Desktop Application, that connects via LAN to the database server (cannot be browser based) * Multiple User Support (Simultaneous users accesing the system) * Needs to be scalable (currently we have 5 employees, but who knows what the future will bring) * Multi-Platform Support (Windows, Linux) I posted a job offer through elance, which seems to raise more questions than answers. How do I decide what language(s) will work best for my situation? (I have received offers for C#, Eclipse, .NET, Powerbuilder, etc. - I want to make sure that I choose the best one now, so I don't run into problems later) Does the programmer hold any rights to the software? Image on mouseover takes space on PageLoad.

Hello, I am trying to show an image on Mouseover and hide it on Mouseout. I am successful in mouseover and mouseout but the image is actually taking the space around the text though i have visibility as hidden.. The text is surrounded with the space of image but the image is displayed on mouseover. How do I call Matlab in a script on Windows?

I'm working on a project that uses several languages: SQL for querying a database Perl/Ruby for quick-and-dirty processing of the data from the database and some other bookkeeping Matlab for matrix-oriented computations Various statistics languages (SAS/R/SPSS) for processing the Matlab output Each language fits its niche well and we already have a fair amount of code in each. Right now, there's a lot of manual work to run all these steps that would be much better scripted. I've already done this on Linux, and it works relatively well. On Linux: matlab -nosplash -nodesktop -r "command" or echo "command" | matlab -nosplash -nodesktop ...opens Matlab in a "command line" mode. (That is, no windows are created -- it just reads from STDIN, executes, and outputs to STDOUT/STDERR.) My problem is that on Windows (XP and 7), this same code opens up a window and doesn't read from / write to the command line. It just stares me blankly in the face, totally ignoring STDIN and STDOUT. How can I script running Matlab commands on Windows? I basically want something that will do: ruby database_query.rb perl legacy_code.pl ruby other_stuff.rb matlab processing_step_1.m matlab processing_step_2.m # etc, etc. I've found out that Matlab has an -automation flag on Windows to start an "automation server". That sounds like overkill for my purposes, and I'd like something that works on both platforms. What options do I have for automating Matlab in this workflow?

I'm a non-specialist with JavaScript / JQuery and I'm having trouble figuring out why my script doesn't work. When my C# page loads, I have a hidden textBox txtHiddenKeywordArray which gets dynamically filled with comma separated values like... horse, buggy, track I'm trying to use the highlight functionality in jquery.highlight-3.js where I have a label text field that will contain and highlight the words in the keywords list. I've tried researching it and keep seeing the same example of the way I have it done. The page does use a MasterPage. Could this affect it? Any idea how I can get the script to see the values from the textbox? Do I need a RegisterStartUpScript or something? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Why trigger query fails in the sqlite with Qt?

I am a beginner in the SQL. I am using SQLite, Qt - on embedded systems. I want to put a trigger here. The trigger is that whenever the primary key Id is greater than 32145, then channelNum=101 should be set. I want to set the attrib name - text also, but I got the compilation issue. Does using functional languages help against computing values repeatedly?

Consider a function f(x,y): f(x,0) = x*x; f(0,y) = y*(y + 1); f(x,y) = f(x,y-1) + f(x-1,y); If one tries to implement that recursively in some language like C++ he will encounter a problem. Suppose the function is first called with x = x0 and y = y0. Then for any pair (x,y) where 0 <= x < x0 and 0 <= y < y0 the intermediate values will be computed multiple times - recursive calls will form a huge tree in which multiple leaves will in fact contain the same pairs (x,y). For pairs (x,y) where x and y are both close to 0 values will be computed numerous times. For instance, I tested a similar function implemented in C++ - for x=20 and y=20 its computation takes about 4 hours (yes, four Earth hours!). Obviously the implementation can be rewritten in such way that repeated computation doesn't occur - either iteratively or with a cache table. The question is: will functional languages perform any better and avoid repeated computations when implementing a function like above recursively?

Problem with Java FX Look and Feel

Hi, I was looking at some of the examples from the Deitel and Deitel's book for Programming in Java, and one of the first examples is a very simple Swing display. Hence this snippet of code : import javax.swing.*; public class cdea { public static void main(String args[]){ JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"\"Welcome to Java Programming!\""); System.exit(0); //end method main } } I read some stuff regarding how one can get native UI look and feel by using UIManager.setLookAndFeel( UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); to the program. However, when I just add this to my main method, it gives me a host of errors. Specifically : Multiple markers at this line - Unhandled exception type IllegalAccessException - Unhandled exception type InstantiationException - Unhandled exception type ClassNotFoundException - Unhandled exception type UnsupportedLookAndFeelException However when I use it as part of a try/catch exception loop (is that what it is called?) as detailed on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1590863/getting-java-applications-to-look-native-on-windows-how , I get the program running properly. Could anyone tell me in simple language why this is so? As in, why can't I directly get the System look and feel; why do I have to use it with exception handling? I'm new to Java, and OOP in general, so I'm sorry if I'm being too simplistic.
