• Why is my mouse randomly deselecting and unclicking?

  (Windows 7 x64, Logitech MX1100 mouse) If I click/hold/ the mouse, like on the title bar of a folder to move it, or to select text, the mouse will randomly "unselect" it and then randomly reselect at another point in the movement. For example, if I were to start mouse-selecting the above paragraph, starting with "movement." and then moving backwards, it might select as far as "reselect", but then the selection would disappear, only to start selecting again from "will randomly". I realize this would sound like a clear-cut case for a hardware issue in the mouse button, but I've narrowed out that that's not the case. The problem doesn't happen if I drag-move/drag-select slowly. But I can make the problem very apparent if I click and drag something fast. For example, if I click and hold the title bar of a window, and then start quickly dragging it around in circles across my monitor, the window will get "dropped", and a new window will get picked up in the process. Additionally, if I right-click anywhere to get a context menu (in Windows, programs, anywhere/everywhere), and then relatively quickly press the left mouse button to select something on the context menu, the context menu will disappear as if I had clicked "through" it. I haven't had any driver changes, system updates, or significant software changes/updates/installations recently, that might be a precursor to this issue. Again, the oddity seems to be the "speed" of action. Another note -- it seems that "lag" has a bit to do with it. If I click and drag a window around quickly, it might start to "lag" a tad bit, like it's perhaps moving too fast for Windows to keep up with the refresh/redraw rate, and that's usually synonymous with this odd deselect bug happening. (Batteries fully charged, no damage or recent changes to mouse, no changes that might affect/block wireless communication)

• Ipsec reload fails to load ipsec.conf Strongswan 5.0

  I am having trouble configuring a connection to an Android device using a fedora 17 linux machine and strongSwanv5.0.1dr2. I have made some progress but when I try adding the configuration to support xauth authentication I receive an error when I try to reload the configuration file. I get a similar error for the value ikev1 for the keyexchange setting , and whenever i try to set a value for rightauth. Has anyone else had this problem The man page for ipsec.conf and the documentation on the strongswan wiki both indicated that these settings and values should be fine in 5.0.x.x. I could try setting authby but that is deprecated according to the documentation i read and the xauthpsk value isn't working. • Primary IDE Channel: Ultra DMA Mode 5 >> PIO Mode

  Hi, my netbook was having huge audio lag and just abnormally slow processing. After doing some searching on the internet, I found out that I needed to uninstall/reinstall the Primary IDE Channel found under the IDE controller section in the Device Manager. I would then set the Transfer Mode to DMA if available and everything would be great. For a period of time, I would see that "Ultra DMA Mode 5" was the current transfer mode, but every so often, it'd revert back to "PIO Mode", which is when it's really laggy. What can I do to prevent the Primary IDE Channel to revert from Ultra DMA Mode to PIO Mode? Also, my netbook has BSODed a few times when it is in PIO Mode, without any real explanation. Only difference is that I have upgraded to 2.0 GB of DDR2 RAM. EDIT: For all who are looking for an answer to this problem, click the link in Kythos's answer and look at number 6 (Re-enable DMA using the Registry Editor). This always works for me now. If on reboot, you seem to only have a black screen after XP is loading, just wait... it is still loading and will show signs of life after 2-3 minutes.

  Hello, everyone! I have an old Toshiba Satellite 4015CDT, with Pentium II MMX, 32MB RAM, 4GB HDD. It also has one USB 1.0 port, parallel and serial ports, a 3.5" floppy drive and a CD-ROM drive (probably almost dead). I've installed NetBSD on this machine (full install) and now I want to connect it to the Internet. Although it has one PCMCIA modem card in it, it is obviously not an option. I've narrowed down my available options to the following: Connect a USB wireless adapter. I have a Realtek RTL8192 adapter, but although the system gives me the device's name (through dmesg) it fails to recognize it as a network adapter. Connect the laptop to another machine through a serial connection, so that the other machine will serve as a bridge to the Internet. Here is the page from the NetBSD documentation on serial connections. Unfortunately, I was not able to find anything on bridging there. I would very much appreciate your suggestions on the topic.   Hi, i have set up backup schedule on our server. SQL Server 2008 to 01:00am on windows server 2008 R2 to 4:00am. Sql backup runs well, but system backup ends sometimes with error. • Do we need to explicitly pass php.ini's location to php-fpm?

  I am seeing a strange issue where my php.ini is not used if I do not explicitly pass it to php-fpm when starting it. This is the upstart script I am using: start on (filesystem and net-device-up IFACE=lo) stop on runlevel [016] pre-start script mkdir -p /run/php end script expect fork respawn exec /usr/local/php/sbin/php-fpm --fpm-config /etc/php/php-fpm.conf If PHP is started with the above, my php.ini is never used, even though it is in Configuration File (php.ini) Path. This is the relevant part from phpinfo(): Configuration File (php.ini) Path /etc/php/ Loaded Configuration File (none) Scan this dir for additional .ini files (none) Additional .ini files parsed (none) If I modify the last line of the upstart script to point php-fpm to php.ini explicitly: exec /usr/local/php/sbin/php-fpm --fpm-config /etc/php/php-fpm.conf -c /etc/php/php.ini Then we see that the php.ini is loaded: Configuration File (php.ini) Path /etc/php/ Loaded Configuration File /etc/php/php.ini Scan this dir for additional .ini files (none) Additional .ini files parsed (none) Why is this the case? Is this a quirk in php-fpm? Minor update: This also seems to be a problem for php5-fpm installed using apt-get. I did a test install in a Ubuntu Server 12.04 virtual machine by running the following: sudo apt-get install nginx php5-fpm PHP-FPM and nginx were started after installation and everything seemed fine. I then uncommented php's settings in nginx's configuration and placed a test phpinfo() file to inspect PHP's settings. The relevant bits are: Configuration File (php.ini) Path /etc/php5/fpm Loaded Configuration File (none) Scan this dir for additional .ini files /etc/php5/fpm/conf.d Additional .ini files parsed /etc/php5/fpm/conf.d/10-pdo.ini I noted that no php.ini was loaded either. However, if I go to /etc/php5/fpm, I can see that a php.ini exists. I also checked the start up scripts for PHP-FPM and the -c parameter was not used to link the ini file to PHP. This can potentially be confusing for people who would expect php.ini to be loaded automatically by PHP-FPM.

  What keyboard shortcuts do you use in Excel? Things I've discovered recently and found very useful are: Shift + Space - select the current row Ctrl + Space - select the current column Ctrl + Shift + Space - select the block of contiguous cell Ctrl + + - Insert (as in the context menu). If the current row is selected, will insert a new row. Ctrl + - - Delete (as in the context menu). If the current row is selected, will delete entire row. What (apart from the normal cut, copy, paste, etc) do you use? Ctrl + 1 to open the Format dialog. Shift + F2 to add/edit a cell comment. Shift + F2, followed by Esc to select the current cell comment, which can then be moved around with the arrow keys (????) or deleted by pressing Del. Ctrl + ???? to move to the last non-blank cell in a series. This is usually the edge of a table, but not if you have blank cells in the path. Pressing End followed by an arrow key does the same thing. Alt + F11 to open the VBA editor. Alt + = to start a SUM() formula and go straight to selecting cells to be summed. Ctrl + G or F5 to jump to a cell by typing its coordinates (e.g. C3) Ctrl + Home to jump to the top left, usually A1 unless you you are in a frozen split view, in which case it will jump to the top left of the "data" area. Ctrl + ; and Ctrl + Shift + ; to insert the current date and time, respectively. I know Ben Lings already posted this one, but I find it indispensable.

• OpenSolaris / Nexenta problems with NetXen 4-port NIC card (ntxn driver)

  Hello, I'm running NexentaStor Enterprise on an HP ProLiant DL180 G6 server. The onboard NIC interfaces surface as igb0 and igb1 and work well. However, I've added an HP NC375T 4-port network card using the NetXen 3031 chipset. This card should be handled by the ntxn driver in the SUNWntxn package, but that results in "ntxn0: failed to map doorbell" messages upon boot. The network interfaces don't show up. After some research, I found HP's driver package for the card. The release notes for the driver package state: This version of the Driver is supported only on Oracle Solaris 10 5/09 & 10/09. Oracle Solaris 10 5/09 & 10/09 contain an older version of NetXen P3 driver package called SUNWntxn. So, adding another version of NetXen P3 driver package using pkgadd command might result in conflicts with the NetXen driver binary & related files. Users are advised to uninstall native SUNWntxn driver package before installing the new package. • Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901: Remap orange "My Computer" button

  I have a Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901 (a.k.a. Part No. 57Y6336) that I'm using with an HTPC running Windows 7. The remote comes with an orange button in the top-left corner that by default, when pressed, opens the Windows "My Computer" window. I would like to remap / reprogram this button to act like the green "Windows Media Center" button instead on a Windows Media Center (WMC) remote; that is, open Windows Media Center if it isn't already open, or go to the WMC homepage if WMC is already open. I've tried several keyboard-remapping utilities (as recommended in other, more general "how to remap keyboard key?" SuperUser.com questions) including SharpKeys, Key Mapper, and KeyTweak, with no luck so far. None of these utilities recognize the orange button -- they all do recognize that some key was pressed, but display a value for the key of "unsupported" or something similar. I was able to use a utility called Keyboard Scan Code Generator to determine that a press of the orange button has a KeyData value of 16777217 (0x1000001), and a "Virtual Code" value of 182. (The other "media" buttons on the N5901 have the same KeyData value, but different Virtual Code values). I'm not sure at this point where in Windows this keystroke is being interpreted as a command to open "My Computer." There is no special software / driver for this device; it worked out of the box with Windows 7, no special driver install necessary. Is there any way to accomplish this? • VMWare ESXi 4.1- 5.1 installation hang

  I'm well aware that I'm trying to install VMWare ESXi 5.1 on hardware that's not on the HCL. I can't find my motherboard on the ultimatewhitebox site as well. I acknowledge these issues in advance. What I'm trying to find is someway to access the logs during installation or see a console or log file to see where the installation is hanging at and remove a device or change a setting in the BIOS. The installation is hanging, not getting a purple screen of death. I thought by hitting ALT+F10 or F12 (or some key combination as such) would enable me to see the console but no such luck. I haven't been able to find much within the ESXi online documentation either. Here's the parts I'm using: AMD Phenom II x3 700 MSI 890FXA-GD70 (IOMMU capable) 16GB DDR3 1333 RAM (2x8GB DIMMs) Intel Pro 1000 (Dual-GbE) PCIe x4 (removed during installation) LSI 9211-8i PCIe (removed during installation) LSI 9201-16i PCIe (removed during installation) Matrox video card BIOS settings: IOMMU is enabled (during 5.1 IOMMU successfully loads) AHCI is enabled (hangs for 4.1) Both onboard Realtek NICs are disabled For ESXi 5.1, the installation hangs after vmkapi_v2_0_0_0 is loaded. For ESXi 5.0, it hangs when loading the vmklinux_9 module. For ESXi 4.1 U3, the installation hangs during loading of ahci module. Again, I'm looking for some way to view a console (service console?) or log file during or after an installation attempt to see what verbose error messages or logging can lead me to solving this problem.

• Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. • Nginx case-insensitive reverse proxy rewrites

  I'm looking to setup an nginx reverse proxy to make some upcoming server moves and load balanced implementations much easier within our apps. Since our servers are all IIS case sensitivity hasn't been an issue, but now with nginx it's becoming one for me. I am simply looking to do a rewrite regardless of case. Infrastructure notes: All backend servers are IIS Most services are WCF services I am trying to simplify the URLs so I can move services around as we continue to build out I can't set my location to case insensitive due to the following error: nginx: [emerg] "proxy_pass" cannot have URI part in location given by regular expression, or inside named location, or inside "if" statement, or inside "limit_except" block in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/test.conf:101 The main part of my conf file where I am trying to handle the rewrite is as follows location /svc_test { proxy_set_header x-real-ip $remote_addr; proxy_set_header x-forwarded-for $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header host $http_host; proxy_pass http://backend/serviceSite/WFCService.svc; } location ~* /test { rewrite ^/(.*)/$ /svc_test/$1 last; } It's the /test location that I can't get figured out. If I call http://nginxserver/svc_test/help I get the WCF help page to display correctly and I can make all available REST calls. This HAS to be a boneheaded regex issue on my part, but I have tried several variations and all I can get are 404 or 500 errors from nginx. This is NOT rocket science so can someone point me in the right direction so I can look like an idiot and just move on?

• Getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN

  I'm having issues getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN. The server setup consists of a security device (DrayTek V3300) which passes the PPTP authentication to a SBS2003 server running RRAS. The server is the DC and provides DNS and WINS, the single NIC's name server is set to the NIC's IP (192.168...), and DHCP on the DrayTek sets the server IP as the DNS. If I create a new VPN connection in Win7, leaving everything as default apart from the server, username, password and domain, I can: ping everything by IP address resolve IPs with nslookup using their fully-qualified name, as in nslookup fileserver.mydomain.local ping machines by fully-qualified name, as in ping fileserver.mydomain.local However if I try to access a file share: within Explorer, I get "Windows cannot access ..." with "Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified Error", using net use z: \\fileserver.mydomain.local\share, I get "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found." If I add the machine name to my HOSTS file I can use the file share, which is my last-ditch workaround, but I have a number of VPN users and would rather a solution that doesn't involve me trying to hand-edit system files on computers half a country away. If I set the WINS server explicitly in the connection's IPv4 settings I don't have to use the FQN to ping the machine, but that doesn't change anything else. EDIT: The PC I'm having the issue on is running Win 7 Home Premium. After more testing I actually have two other PCs that work, one W7HP, one XP Home, and another Vista PC that doesn't work (not tested as much as the others), all four on the same internet connection (behind the same router). All of them were tested with a straight-forward, all defaults, new VPN configuration.

• Commvault Oracle RMAN Restore to new host

  We use Commvault Simpana 8 and I have a situation where I have backups of an Oracle database on tape that were taken from Host A. Host A suffered a disk failure (lost its raid configuration) and the sys admins are trying to restore it; in the meantime, I'd working to bring the database back up on another host - Host B. I'm running into problems and am trying to sort out the parameters that need to be passed to the Commvault media agent to get this to work. Unfortunately, I do not have access to Commvault support and the backup person is unavailable. Any one have a clue? The backups are there and the media agent reported a successful write when they ran last night. • Windows 8 and SMB2 Issues

  We're playing with the consumer preview of Windows 8 and having issues accessing some network shares in our environment. Basically, when I attempt to access a share directly (\[SERVER].[DOMAIN].[NETWORK]\Share$) I get 'An extended error has occured'. The shares reside on an EMC Celerra system. Sorry, I don't really have much more information about it (this is just a little side project). Accessing shares that reside on Windows machines are fine. The Firewall is completley disabled and I am running under full domain administrative credentials. Which shows me that NETWORK_FILE_SYSTEM Function:0x0080 request is invalid.. Does anyone know what would cause this? Thanks in advance. Rhys. Edit: FYI - as a workaround, you can disable SMB 2.2 as noted in the EMC thread: sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled This will allow the machine to access the shares. • Connection speed drops from 1 Gbps to 10 Mbps (Vista 64)

  I recently got a Windows Home Server (HP MediaSmart Server EX490) setup so I could do backups and other things. However, I am having trouble on my Vista 64 PC. The backup will be making great progress, then it will just slow down. At one point, I noticed the lights on my Netgear GS105 indicated it was not using a 1000 Mbps connection, but a 10 Mbps one. I checked the Status of Local Area Connection (Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection) and that also showed the same slow speed. This has happened several times in the last couple days. When I disabled the network device, and then enabled it, it established the 1 Gpbs connection again. However, some of the times the Sent Bytes Activity on the Status windows indicate that the data flow is still slow (100 to 1000 bytes every couple seconds). Obviously, at this rate I could backup faster to floppy disk. :) My question is how to diagnose and fix this problem. When I look at the Administrative Events, I do a Errors: Bonjour Service 456: ERROR: read_msg errno 10054 (An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.) And a Warning: e1yexpress Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection Link has been disconnected. I am suspicious there is some power saving mode. I found a post suggesting System Idle Power Saver(SIPS) may be the issue. I am going to try that, but looking for other suggestions or diagnostic advice. I have several new items in this configuration: server, client software, switch and cat6 cables.

• Apache: Setting DocumentRoot to cgi directory results in downloading file instead of executing it.

  I have a c-compiled CGI application that I need to execute from the DocumentRoot of my Apache server. The CGI file is called index.cgi and is located at /usr/lib/cgi-bin/index.cgi. I have the following Directory definition <Directory "/usr/lib/cgi-bin/"> Options +ExecCGI -MultiViews +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all DirectoryIndex index.cgi </Directory> I have the following VirtualHost setting: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot /usr/lib/cgi-bin # ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog /var/log/apache2/access.log combined </VirtualHost> If I go to 127.0.0.1 or 127.0.0.1/index.cgi I get prompted to download the index.cgi file, however if I enable the ScriptAlias in the vhost configuration block and go to 127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/index.cgi I see the output of my CGI application. I had originally solved this problem with mod_rewrite, however that worked on my test system the target (embedded) doesn't have that module available so I'm looking at another route (again).

• iSCSI, failover and XenServer

  I have an iSCSI fail over implementation setup so if one of my storage units fails the other takes over immediately (it also runs the NFS shares). When fail over occurs, volumes are exported, the IP is switched to the other machine and the targets are reconfigured. The fail over of the storage system itself works just fine. I use NexentaStor for my filer. When I do a test (manual) fail over of my storage the following occurs: Note: I run the admin VM's on NFS and customer based VM's on iSCSI All NFS based VM's remain up and working perfectly through the failover and after All VM 's running on iSCSI eventually report the following: An error about not being able to write to a particular block An error about journaling not working Then the file system goes RO To get the VM's working again I have to do the following: Force shutdown of the "broken" VM's. Detach the iSCSI SR Re-attach the iSCSI SR Boot the VM on a different server (5 in my pool) If I don't boot on a different server I get this error "Internal error: Failure("The VDI <uuid&gt; is already attached in RW mode; it can't be attached in RO mode!")" The only way I have found to fix that error is to reboot the entire server it was running on previously which is obviously a huge pain. Currently multipathing is NOT enabled (but can be and the same thing still occurs). I have edited much of the /etc/iscsid.conf file to work with the timeout settings but to no avail. In short, my storage fails over properly but XenServer does not keep the connection alive. As a thought, the error that shows up in #4 above might be the ultimate cause and fixing that would fix everything? Any help would be appreciated more than you know.

• Can I change the file system on the OS partition on Server 2008 R2?

  I have a client using R1Soft Continuous Data Protection backup, and two of the Server 2008 R2 boxes were erroring out with these errors: Unable to obtain NTFS volume data for device '\\?\Volume{f612849e-7125-11e0-8772-806e6f6e6963}': Incorrect function. Unable to discover information for filesytem volume '\\?\Volume{f612849e-7125-11e0-8772-806e6f6e6963}'; Unable to obtain NTFS volume So I backed up all the registry entries with this, {f612849e-7125-11e0-8772-806e6f6e6963}, in it, and deleted them based on some VERY sparse info from R1Soft. I then decided to restore them before I rebooted, and do a system state backup first using MS backup, and even it errored out saying that there were FAT32 partitions. This was a major clue as the only two computers with problems had these FAT32 partitions. I figured if MS backup can't backup something, any other program is likely to have problems. Also, now that I realized the servers had FAT32 partitions on them, the error referencing NTFS takes on more weight. The partitions on both servers have the label "OS", but on one of the computers, it is given a letter, but on the other not. So I am thinking if I just convert the file systems from FAT32 to NTFS, it may solve the backup problem. So the question is this: Can I just convert those partitions, and does anyone have any concrete knowledge of any major downsides, like the servers not coming back up (of course, I would do one at a time)? My thinking is that the answer is probably at least 95% no, but they are production servers, so I wanted to get some second opinions.

• Disable raid member check upon mount to mount damaged nvidia raid1 member

  Hi, A friend of mine destroyed his Nvidia RAID1 array somehow and in trying to fix it, he ended up with a non-working array. Because of the RAID metadata, the actual disk data was stored at an offset from the beginning. I was able to identify this offset with dd and a hexeditor and then I used losetup to create a loop device with the proper offset, so that I could mount the partition. It was then that I ran into problems, namely that mount says: "mount: unknown filesystem type 'nvidia_raid_member'". I also had this when trying to mount a Linux MD component the other day, and because I can remember that doing that in the past worked, I surmised that it may be some kind of protection. I therefore booted an old Sysrescue CD and tried it there, which worked (because of the older version of mount/libc/kernel/whatever). I still need to try to get more data, and because I don't want to keep using that SysrecueCD, I'd like to be able to mount the disk on my normal system. So, my question is: can the check for a disk being a raid member be disabled? I guess I could also zero out blocks that look like the raid block, but I'd rather not... I made an image of the disk with par2 data, so it's revertable, but still...

• Subversion Apache Ubuntu - Remote Access?

  Okay, a couple days ago I built a bare bones kit into a machine. I've been running through tutorials to get it to work and right now I've gotten as far as making it available in my lan, hooray! However, I cannot access the repositories remotely. Any machine on the lan can easily access it through the hostname or, using 'outbound ip/hostname' or 'outbound ip/machine ip'. The machine can be pinged from a remote, non-lan machine and responds. I just can't get anyone into it outside of my lan. I've been trying to figure it out but I'm lost. I'm breaking a few rules and if any of these would be my problem, please indicate. I don't think I have a static IP (However I check my outbound IP whenever I do testing, is that not enough? It has stayed the same for 5+ days) I have not discussed this set-up with my service provider (Does Optimum Online block port 80? If so, can I just switch apache to listen on a different port?) I am in the DMZ of my router. This is what allowed it to be pinged remotely. For security reasons the machine that is in that zone is turned off most of the time until I can get it locked down. Any help would be appreciated, even if it's just a couple of words I could google to understand what I'm doing wrong. Tortoise SVN does not allow access remotely, but it does within the LAN as well.
