• Slow Write Speed on ESXi host

  I have an ESXi 5.0 free host with an internal datastore of 7.2K 5 disk RAID 5 using a PERC 710 mini RAID controller in a Dell Poweredge R620 Server with 32GB Ram and a 12 Core Xeon. I seem to get slow write speeds in the guests so I checked out ESXTOP and I see 15MB/s write speed there on this host, which is comprable to the guests. What could be causing such horrible write speeds? Is RAID 5 really this slow to write??

  i have windows 7 x64 and ubuntu 10.04 installed on my machine. while i download at ~15 MiB/sec in ubuntu (reaches almost at an instant), it takes almost a minute or two for win7 to reach that speed while downloading -say- a film. also the connection becomes unresponsive for some time periods in win7. i experienced this in several win7 installations (x64 prof. always, same version).

• Speed-up large number of files deletion on NTFS volumes

  Every now and then I need to delete a folder containing something like 500k files from an NTFS volume. I do this with Windows Explorer. Since NTFS journals all the service data changes each deletion is carried out serially and so the whole 500k files deletion takes ages. I remember when I did the same in FAT32 it ran uncomparably faster. Is there any way to speed up deletion of large number of files on NTFS volumes?

  When using nc, scp, wget to transfer files between 2 machines on a dedicated 2Mbps link, I get speeds between 0.5 and 1 Mbps. However, when I use iperf -c 10.0.1.4 -t 20 -P 12 (for example) I can maximise the speed of the link (getting stable 2Mbps). Is there a way to make single stream transfers (such as those done by scp) to utilise all/most of the link? Some kind of tcp settings, or iptables...?

• Is there software to automatically change song speed without transposing it

  Goal: automatically adjusting speed (bpm) of a given set of MP3 files in order to have a collection of music optimized to be heard when I am running. (I realized that I prefer to run with about 168 bpm in my ears). Of course, I could have some software to detect BPM and then calculate and stretch/squeeze each song using Audacity or a similar tool, however, I'd prefer a solution which requires less manual operation.

• Fastest light-weight image viewer over forwarded x11 session (linux)

  I have a slow network connection over which I'm forwarding x11 over ssh. I want to view images on the remote host (Ubuntu) quickly and efficiently. I'm looking for an image viewer that will take into account the image viewer window's resolution and downsize the image before sending it over the network, instead of sending the full size image. The images I want to view will be around 5MB and I only need to be able to browse through tiny thumbnails of the images to identify the image I'm looking for. It is not necessary to be able to see more than one image at a time. Highest speed over slow network connection is the priority. Thanks! Matthew EDIT: It's possible that the way x11 forwarding works, only the image at the display resolution will be transferred anyway. If that's true, please confirm and the question still stands for which image viewer will be the fastest over a slow connection

• Win 2k3 server's network problem.

  I'm running 4 of Win2k3 64bit servers in the same subnet. It's been more than an year that I've running them without a problem. Recently, I kept losing the connection to one of the server. Let's say it's 'server A' which has a problem. Losing the connection means that I can't access to server A from the other servers. I've checked if server A has any internet connection problems or are there any abnomal event logs in the eventvwr - but haven't found any problems. The problem usually resolved if I restart the server again. But as time goes by, it keeps happen again and again. I can't afford to restart the server every time, and I really want to find out the reason. Can anyone help me out? Let me know if you guys need any of more information.

• How can I solve Windows PPTP VPN issues?

  I'm having persistent problems with Windows PPTP VPN connections. The VPN appears up whilst the tunnel won't transfer traffic (ping to a remote IP within the VPN works for a while, and then fails). The client receives routing information via DHCP. When the connection fails, the routing table is still correct so I don't think it's a routing problem. My internet connection is via an ADSL2 line. There's software to deal with PPTP problems, like TunnelRat, but I don't want to install v1.1 of the .NET framework and I'd rather get to the bottom of the problem (I have multiple VPN connections and some are more unreliable than others). What can I do to get to the bottom of this? Alternatively, what can I do to keep the connection alive?

  I am trying to establish a VPN connection to a server in my office from my laptop at home. I tried some of the steps as mentioned here: Connect to a network Connect to a workplace Use my Internet Connection (VPN) Then type server IP address and then my username & password. After creating a VPN connection, I can see I am connected to it. Now I want to browse files on the server. But I have no clue where I should look for them. I was thinking more of a simple step, like, Windows Run > Type ip address > \\124.345.678.900, then a prompt asking username and password, and finally a window opens to view the files. I tried to google it, but still unable to view files. Please help. Update: I didn't mention that when I try to connect to server via \\124.345.678.900 I get 0x80070043 error message.

• Bridging a non-persistent PPP connection to wireless (or wired) in Windows XP

  I have a 3G modem-like device (eMobile's D01NX, PC card style, for any Japan nerds out there) that I use to connect my PC to the Internet. I'd like to bridge this connection with another computer either via an ad-hoc wireless network, or a simple cross-over cable (either are options). However, when I open "Network Connections", I do not see the PPP connection (otherwise I could click both and bridge). I believe this is because there is software (provided by the vendor) that is handling the card directly and registering a PPP connection dynamically. The problem is that my home internet connection keeps dropping randomly - for about 10 mins at a time. This is only an intermittent problem and will go away soon I hope. However, my server doesn't recover properly - when the connection comes back, I can still access it at 192.168.0.8 (locally) without any issue, but at www.javawag.com there's no reply! (Just an aside - my home internet connection is dynamic ISP, the domain www.javawag.com points to javawag.dyndns.org which in turn points to my IP, updated every minute by ddclient on the server) Is there some way for the server to check if it's accessible from the outside world periodically, and if not restart Apache/reboot? Oh, and if I reboot the problem fixes itself also! Javawag

• Can I run Linux on the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless, with a built-in 3G modem, and connect using the built in modem?

  I apologize if my question made little sense, I am very tired at the moment. Anyway, Recently I purchases the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless. It runs on the Intel Atom processor and came with Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is quite possibly the worst and most restrictive OS I have ever used. I plan on installing CRUX, after doing a little research on minimal, free, Linux operating systems, as I am working on web programming using Python, among other things. My only worry is that, because my HP Mini uses a built in wireless card (and I have no wifi connection, only a 3G connection) that has a "mobile access" connection to Verizon wireless, I am not sure if after installing CRUX that I would still be able to connect using this option. I have never used Linux before, and am hoping this will work. So if anybody has experience with this...please answer, can I connect to vzw 3G with linux, using an internal mobile access card...

  I am trying to connect my xbox360 to the internet through ICS using my laptop. I have done this a few days ago using the exact same hardware(so no hardware problems) The laptop can browse the internet. The laptop gets its settings though DHCP. I have enabled ICS on the Wireless connection (where the internet is coming from) I have set the xbox and the Wired connection on the laptop to obtain settings automatically. The issue is that the Wired connection only shows 'Unidentified Network'. What could i be doing wrong?

  Help. File transfer and connection speed to our Xserve are painfully slow from newly purchased iMacs. The Xserve is only used as a file server, its running 10.4.11. The problem seems to be only happening on brand new iMacs running 10.6.3. When connected either over afp or smb copying files is many times slower than usual. Other machines on the network running either 10.4 or 10.5 have a normal connection speed. To try to rule out OS incompatibility I connected the new iMac running 10.6 to another computer running 10.4 over the network. The file transfer speed was fast as normal. So it seems the problems lies with the X serve (maybe). The afp logs either access or error don't show anything unusual. One thing that did look different was when the imac was connected to the Xserve the user had its id listed as its IP address. The other machines connected, had the id of broadcasthost. I also noticed that when connected from the new iMac I can only see one of the mirrors. When any other computer connects both mirrors are shown. Tried a restart of the Xserve but the problem persists. Thanks in advance for any advice

Topology Facts ESXi5 version is 5.0.0.504890 VM has the latest Vmware Tools installed VM is using E1000 network driver Physical box has Win Srv 2008 R2 as the OS CrystalDiskMark says the drive on physical box can read/write 100MB/s vCenter is another vm on esx both vm and physical box are showing 1Gbps link speed Configuration Networking shows vmnic0 as 1000 Full NTttcp is a client/server tool from Microsoft for measuring pure network throughput Here's what I've done so far: Test1: VM is running Filezilla FTP Server (default settings, one user account made) Physical box is running Filezilla FTP Client (default settings) Physical box is uploading a big file to FTP server Transfer speed (as observed by Windows Task Manager on both machines): ~11MB/s (bad) Physical box is downloading that file from FTP server Transfer speed (as observed by Windows Task Manager on both machines): still ~11MB/s (bad) Could it be disk performance issue? Test2: Physical box is running ntttcpr.exe -a 6 -m 6,0,VM_IP_ADDRESS VM is running ntttcps.exe -a 6 -m 6,0,PHY_BOX_IP_ADDRESS Transfer speed (as observed by Windows Task Manager on both machines): ~11MB/s (bad) Could it be switch performance issue? • Frequently getting booted from Securemote VPN-1 Connection

  I connect to my office's network remotely through the Checkpoint SecuRemote E75 (R75) VPN application, but recently it's been causing me a lot of issues when connecting from home. I connect through a WRT54GL router running DD-WRT v24 firmware, so I have no clue if that affects anything. I took a dump of the logs for Checkpoint and here are the messages that populate when I get booted but I have no clue how to decipher them and my IT department is completely clueless in terms of resolving the situation. I'm thinking the router is blocking the keep alive connection or something along those lines, but I have no idea how to fix the problem.
