  • How to maintain an ordered table with Core Data (or SQL) with insertions/deletions?

    This question is in the context of Core Data, but if I am not mistaken, it applies equally well to a more general SQL case. I want to maintain an ordered table using Core Data, with the possibility for the user to: reorder rows insert new lines anywhere delete any existing line What's the best data model to do that? I can see two ways: 1) Model it as an array: I add an int position property to my entity 2) Model it as a linked list: I add two one-to-one relations, next and previous from my entity to itself 1) makes it easy to sort, but painful to insert or delete as you then have to update the position of all objects that come after 2) makes it easy to insert or delete, but very difficult to sort. In fact, I don't think I know how to express a Sort Descriptor (SQL ORDER BY clause) for that case. Now I can imagine a variation on 1): 3) add an int ordering property to the entity, but instead of having it count one-by-one, have it count 100 by 100 (for example). Then inserting is as simple as finding any number between the ordering of the previous and next existing objects. The expensive renumbering only has to occur when the 100 holes have been filled. Making that property a float rather than an int makes it even better: it's almost always possible to find a new float midway between two floats. Am I on the right track with solution 3), or is there something smarter?

    I am trying to write a database script (SQL SERVER 2008) which will copy information from database tables on one server to corresponding tables in another database on a different server. I have read that the correct way to do this is to use a sql statement in a format similar to the following: INSERT INTO <linked_server>.<database>.<owner>.<table_name> SELECT * FROM <linked_server>.<database>.<owner>.<table_name> As there will be several tables being copied, I would like to declare variables at the top of the script to allow the user to specify the names of each server and database that are to be used. These could then be used throughout the script. However, I am not sure how to use the variable values in the actual SQL statements. What I want to achieve is something like the following: DECLARE @SERVER_FROM AS NVARCHAR(50) = 'ServerFrom' DECLARE @DATABASE_FROM AS NVARCHAR(50) = 'DatabaseTo' DECLARE @SERVER_TO AS NVARCHAR(50) = 'ServerTo' DECLARE @DATABASE_TO AS NVARCHAR(50) = 'DatabaseTo' INSERT INTO @SERVER_TO.@DATABASE_TO.dbo.TableName SELECT * FROM @SERVER_FROM.@DATABASE_FROM.dbo.TableName ...     lHi, I'm currently writing a WCF service. One of those methods get's a request object and returns a response object. In the request there are a couple of value-type members. Is there a way to define members are mandatory in the declarative way? I'm in an early stage of development and I don't want to start with versioning now. In addition I don't want to have method sig with 25 parameters, therefore I created the request object. The problem I have is that due to the value-types, I can never be sure if the consumer of the service intended to have the default value in there, or it was just by lazyness. On consumer side you don't easily detect that you probably missed that property. So I would like to have something that forces the caller of the service to provide an value, and if not he ideally get's a compile-time error. any ideas? tia, Martin

    I need to be able to display and edit a hierarchical list of tasks in a C# app. It can either be a Windows form app, or ASP.NET. Basically, I want similar behaviour to the way Microsoft Project handles tasks. The control would need to: 1) Maintain a list of items made up of several fields 2) Each item can have a number of children (at least 3 levels of nesting) 3) It needs to be very easy to change the parents/children of an item 4) It needs to be very easy to edit the fields (as fast as changing cells in Excel) 5) It needs to be very easy to reorder the items by dragging and dropping or cut and paste 6) If I can easily connect the control to a database, even better Before I go and create something manually, I'm wondering if there is something available already?

    On our website http://www.dimagi.com, the items in the jQuery menu near the top of the screen gain a background-color on hover. The hover background-color of the rightmost list item ("About Us") is cut off at the very right edge of the text, seemingly only in WebKit (tested Safari and Chrome in Windows XP). Can anybody see what I might be doing wrong in the CSS? Or is this some obscure WebKit bug?

    Regular expressions have always been my pet peeves. Every time I think that I finally got it I have a new problem ! I want to catch url like this : http://www.mydomain.com/boutique/blabla-1/bla-bla2/99/104 http://www.mydomain.com/boutique/blabla1/99 and eventually : http://www.mydomain.com/boutique/blabla-1/bla-bla2/product1/99/104/55/ after a lot of tries and errors I came up with this which seems to work with http://www.gskinner.com/RegExr/ but not in apache ^.*/boutique/([a-zA-Z-]*)(/?[a-zA-Z-]*)/?([0-9]*)/?([0-9]*)/?$ boutique.php?c1=$3&c2=$4 (I was only working with the first two url so far) MY apache rewrite log debug files are helpless : pass through /Users/iko/Sites/mysite/boutique.php I'm only interrested in getting the ids.     I have a WSDL with various portTypes. Some of the contain only output <operation name="getServerTimeZone"> <output message="s0:getServerTimeZoneSoapOut"/> </operation> I would expect that the correct should be: <operation name="getServerTimeZone"> <input message="s0:getServerTimeZoneSoapIn"/> <output message="s0:getServerTimeZoneSoapOut"/> </operation> The problem is that when I am trying to create stubs from the WSDL using gsoap wsdl2h parser I got the following error: No wsdl:definitions/portType/operation/input I haven't tested with other tools (ie WSDL2Java). My question: Is it valid to have a portType with no input? I am using AltovaXML Spy and this WSDL passes the validation.... Is there any meaning having WSDL operation with no input? (I am not talking about One-Way Message Passing, where you can have input but no output - this is valid).
