• IFS Achieves Oracle Exadata Optimized and Oracle Exalogic Optimized Status

• Use Drive Mirroring for Instant Backup in Windows 7

  Even with the best backup solution, a hard drive crash means you’ll lose a few hours of work. By enabling drive mirroring in Windows 7, you’ll always have an up-to-date copy of your data. Windows 7’s mirroring – which is only available in Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions – is a software implementation of RAID 1, which means that two or more disks are holding the exact same data. The files are constantly kept in sync, so that if one of the disks fails, you won’t lose any data. Note that mirroring is not technically a backup solution, because if you accidentally delete a file, it’s gone from both hard disks (though you may be able to recover the file). As an additional caveat, having mirrored disks requires changing them to “dynamic disks,” which can only be read within modern versions of Windows (you may have problems working with a dynamic disk in other operating systems or in older versions of Windows). See this Wikipedia page for more information. You will need at least one empty disk to set up disk mirroring. We’ll show you how to mirror an existing disk (of equal or lesser size) without losing any data on the mirrored drive, and how to set up two empty disks as mirrored copies from the get-go. Mirroring an Existing Drive Click on the start button and type partitions in the search box. Click on the Create and format hard disk partitions entry that shows up. Alternatively, if you’ve disabled the search box, press Win+R to open the Run window and type in: diskmgmt.msc The Disk Management window will appear. We’ve got a small disk, labeled OldData, that we want to mirror in a second disk of the same size. Note: The disk that you will use to mirror the existing disk must be unallocated. If it is not, then right-click on it and select Delete Volume… to mark it as unallocated. This will destroy any data on that drive. Right-click on the existing disk that you want to mirror. Select Add Mirror…. Select the disk that you want to use to mirror the existing disk’s data and press Add Mirror. You will be warned that this process will change the existing disk from basic to dynamic. Note that this process will not delete any data on the disk! The new disk will be marked as a mirror, and it will starting copying data from the existing drive to the new one. Eventually the drives will be synced up (it can take a while), and any data added to the E: drive will exist on both physical hard drives. Setting Up Two New Drives as Mirrored If you have two new equal-sized drives, you can format them to be mirrored copies of each other from the get-go. Open the Disk Management window as described above. Make sure that the drives are unallocated. If they’re not, and you don’t need the data on either of them, right-click and select Delete volume…. Right-click on one of the unallocated drives and select New Mirrored Volume…. A wizard will pop up. Click Next. Click on the drives you want to hold the mirrored data and click Add. Note that you can add any number of drives. Click Next. Assign it a drive letter that makes sense, and then click Next. You’re limited to using the NTFS file system for mirrored drives, so enter a volume label, enable compression if you want, and then click Next. Click Finish to start formatting the drives. You will be warned that the new drives will be converted to dynamic disks. And that’s it! You now have two mirrored drives. Any files added to E: will reside on both physical disks, in case something happens to one of them. Conclusion While the switch from basic to dynamic disks can be a problem for people who dual-boot into another operating system, setting up drive mirroring is an easy way to make sure that your data can be recovered in case of a hard drive crash. Of course, even with drive mirroring, we advocate regular backups to external drives or online backup services. • How to recognize special function keys on keyboard

  I have a Microsoft Digital Media 3000 Keyboard. • How to boot Ubuntu 12.04-64bit from a USB from Compaq CQ58

  I try to boot Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit on my Compaq CQ58 laptop from a USB but it is not working. I've correctly installed the Ubuntu on my pen drive following the instructions on Ubuntu website. • Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition

  Have got a new kickn server as new DEV machine It has got two 3ware 9650 Cached Controllers with 8 x 300gig Velociraptor Drives First Problem was the 9.5.1.1 drivers Had to press F8 as soon as the Win 2008 r2 server cd started to load. Once in Adavanced Startup options Disable Driver Signing options Next Issue was I got everything running and accidently selected wrong raid part to do install once I restarted All I would get after waiting the 10 mins for the reboot to start & loading the driver was "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition"  Finally after about 1 hour I removed all drives apart from the 2 needed for system part on cont 0 deleted system part and recreated this RAID1 mirror. (ALso make sure all USB drives are out on boot..only add them when browsing  the driver to be added )  Restarted loaded driver selected install and Once system is up I will go back and add drives and new parts on both controllers AT least I did not get stuck for a day as is the norm..lol

• HTML Javascript Hidden Object or Photo Hunt Game

  Is anyone aware of any example photo hunt/hidden object games either in HTML and Javascript or flash if necessary? I am having trouble finding one, I may be using the wrong words to search. Photo hunt being like the wheres wally/waldo books where you look for wally in a complex image until you find him. So if it were played on screen you would press the location of wally and it would either be correct or wrong, possibly timed. I am hoping to find one where you can just load in your own photos and specify some co-ordinates that match where the hidden object is. A spot the difference example may be useful as a starting point but I haven't found an example of either that is web based yet.

• EHome IR receiver and Ubuntu 13 - any one have this working?

  I have a "generic" USB IR receiver I purchased off of Ebay to make my life a little easier with XBMC on my Ubuntu box. I am currently running 13.10 and have never tried nor have any knowledge of IR in Ubuntu. I know of lirc, and I know a lot of it is now included in the kernel. My understanding is that lirc in basic terms maps pulses from an remote control to functions - like keyboard or mouse clicks. I believe it must need some sort of driver or something else, but I am completely in the dark on this. • Bash prompt doesn't print until I interact with console again

  I don't even know where to begin to diagnose this one. Usually, when a command finishes, the prompt prints itself for the next command. However, that is not happening. Hard to explain with words, I'll just use an example: User@Machine:~$ cp /mnt/mountname/directory/textfile.txt . After waiting several seconds (far too long for this operation on a small file) I press Enter, and see: User@Machine:~$ cp /mnt/mountname/directory/textfile.txt . User@Machine:~$ User@Machine:~$ So clearly the operation had finished, but the prompt didn't display... until I pressed enter, and then BOTH prompts instantly displayed. This error does not happen with commands like cd.

• Display problem with fresh install of 12.04

  Just intalled Ubuntu 12.04 from CD and install went with no problems. After rebooting, I get the initial purple screen and then a black screen with mouse pointer and a few stray pixels at the bottom left of screen. Occasionally during the boot process, the purple screen comes back momentarily but then back to the black screen with the mouse pointer. When I finally give up and press the power button, the purple screen returns with the Shut Down box visible as it is shutting down. Any ideas? I have tried adding nomodeset after quiet splash, but no change. Possibly not doing it correctly, since I am somewhat of a newbie to linux. Thanks! Dan

• Making a bash script that reconnect to AP when connection lost

  I'm facing problems with WIFI on ubuntu i tried to update the system but still the same what happens is that i suddenly lose the connection with my router and when i press on the WIFI bar the system won't detect any APs i have to uncheck "enable WIFI" option ,then re check it so it work,it automatically reconnect. I'm thinking of making a bash script that detects when the pc is disconnected from the router for any reason, and when it is disconnected it disable then enable the wifi. i mean like automating resetting the connection that possible ? i guess i must use this nmcli nm wifi off nmcli nm wifi on but how can i make the script know if the PC is disconnected from the WIFI ?

  I inherited a machine with Ubuntu desktop installed. It has a password in place and I have no idea what the password may be. I cannot get to the command line to use the methods I have found online. No matter how many times I press "Shift" during the boot process it still goes all the way to the desktop login. I never see grub. I am not sure which version I have but I think may be 9 or 10. • Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix on Asus Eee PC 701 4G - boot process hangs up

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Insall Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

• GPL code allowing non-GPL local copies of nondistributed code

  I have come across a book that claims that alterations and augmentations to GPL works can be kept close-source as long as these are not redistributed into the wild. Therefore, customizations of websites deriving from GPL packages need not be released under the GPL and developers can earn profit on them by offering their services to their clients while keeping their GPL-based code closed source at the same time. (cf. Chapter 17 of WordPress Plugin Development by Wrox Press). I've never realized this, but essentially, by putting restrictions on redistributable code the GPL says nothing about what can and cannot be done with code which is kept private in terms of the licensing model. Have I understood this correctly?

• Switching from Visual Studio to Eclipse [closed]

  I've been using Visual Studio for about 6 years now, which is enough time to know most useful keyboard shortcuts and little features. I recently had to switch to Eclipse and java for school, and now I'm constantly searching for the right keys to press. I have searched around for a definitve guide on this, but I couldn't find any. Here's what I want to know: For any feature in Visual Studio, what is the equivalent feature in Eclipse called and what is it's default keyboard shortcut? Are there any things that work very differently in Eclipse, that one might misunderstand or do wrong at first when switching? Are there features in Visual Studio that Eclipse does not have, and is there a workaround? I hope we can create a guide to make life easier for future developers that have to make this switch. You can answer any of the three questions above (no need to do all three), and multiple per answer if you want. I can't mark questions as community wiki anymore, but I do think that's appropriate here.
