  • How can I use aliased commands with xargs?

    - by Nathan Fellman
I have the following alias in my .aliases: alias gi grep -i and I want to look for foo case-insensitively in all the files that have the string bar in their name: find -name \*bar\* | xargs gi foo This is what I get: xargs: gi: No such file or directory Is there any way to use aliases in xargs, or do I have to use the full version: find -name \*bar\* | xargs grep -i foo Note: This is a simple example. Besides gi I have some pretty complicated aliases that I can't expand manually so easily. Edit: I used tcsh, so please specify if an answer is shell-specific.

  • weird characters displayed during serial communication OSX

    - by nemo
I have tried communicating via serial (OSX w/ prolific drivers - USB RS232 adapter - Tx,Rx and GND pins on device serial ttl port) to a device and done so successfully using screen /dev/tty.usbserial 115200 8N1 I get to log in and use it as if I was SSH or TelNetted in... However whenever I try to go into system recovery mode (holding CTRL+1) while the device is powering on, it starts displaying weird characters and until I close the screen session it will continue showing weird characters: Of course when we tried doing the same thing on my boss' macbook running windows and PuTTY and everything worked fine, even in system recovery mode; characters were displayed properly. What gives? Id like to learn the intuition to use because up till now I concluded that since I can bot into the system and see characters normally everything about the connection should be fine and its must have been the recovery partition that was broken. This was wrong of course... Niko

  • Should each app have its own database, or should small apps be merged into one?

    - by King
We have a bunch of small to medium sized apps, each of which has its own database (MSSQL Server). There was a suggestion that we consoldate the 'related' databases into a smaller set amount of larger databases. They don't particularly share a lot of data, they would just be under a similar business group. For example, using a 'Finance' DB to hold the tables and procedures for finance apps. Would it be appropriate to use a different schema for each app? E.g. App1.SomeTable App1.SomeOtherTable AppTwo.SomeTable What are the pros and cons of this approach? What should I watch out for? Thanks

  • glui /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXmu

    - by Myx
Hello: I have downloaded the latest GLUI source code and now I am trying to compile it. When I do so, I get the following error: g++ -O0 -Wall -pedantic -I./ -I./include -I/usr/X11R6/include -o bin/example1 example/example1.cpp -L./lib -lglui -L/usr/X11R6/lib/libXdmcp.a -lglut -lGLU -lGL -lXmu -lXext -lX11 -lXi -lm /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXmu collect2: ld returned 1 exit status When I did a locate libXmu, I get the following output: > %:~/src/GLUI/src$ locate libXmu > /usr/lib/libXmu.so.6 > /usr/lib/libXmu.so.6.2.0 > /usr/lib/libXmuu.so.1 > /usr/lib/libXmuu.so.1.0.0 Do I get the error because I don't have a /usr/lib/libXmu.so? If this is the case, how can I make one? (I am not experienced with linking at all). Thanks!

  • how to redirect terminal contents to a jtextpane?

    - by sonu thomas
    hi.. I was trying to run a java class file using java code.The aim was to direct the executing sequence of the terminal of fedora 10 into a frame with a textpane. My code is: import java.io.DataInputStream; import java.io.IOException; import javax.swing.JDialog; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JOptionPane; import javax.swing.JPanel; import javax.swing.JTextArea; import javax.swing.JTextPane; //import sun.reflect.ReflectionFactory.GetReflectionFactoryAction; public class file { /** * @param args */ /** * @param args * @throws IOException */ public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException{ // TODO Auto-generated method stub JDialog jj = new JDialog(); jj.setTitle("helllo"); String sssub1,sssub2,sssub3; String ss="C:/Users/sonu/Desktop/ourIDE/src/src/nn.java"; JPanel n = new JPanel(); jj.setContentPane(n); JTextPane tpn2=new JTextPane(); jj.getContentPane().add(tpn2); jj.setVisible(true); Runtime runtime; Process process; if(ss.indexOf(" ")==-1) { try { runtime= Runtime.getRuntime(); sssub1="/home/ss/Desktop/src/"; sssub2="nn"; process=runtime.exec("sh jrun.sh "+sssub1+" "+sssub2); DataInputStream data=new DataInputStream(process.getInputStream()); DataInputStream data_data=new DataInputStream(process.getErrorStream()); String s="",t=""; int ch; while((ch=data.read())!=-1){ s=s+(char)ch; } data.close(); while((ch=data_data.read())!=-1){ t=t+(char)ch; } data_data.close(); if(t.equals("")) { s+="\nNormal Termination."; tpn2.setText(s); } else tpn2.setText(t); }catch(Exception e){ System.out.println("Error executing file==>"+e);} } } } The content of **jrun.sh** is cd $1 java $2 When the content of **nn.java** was this: import java.io.*; class nn { public static void main(String[] ar)throws IOException { int i=90; BufferedReader dt = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in)); System.out.println("Enter"); //i=Integer.parseInt(dt.readLine()); line--notable System.out.println("i="+i); } } It worked smoothly But when I remove the comment on line--notable,it gave me Textpane with no content. The problem is : I cant read an input from nn.java Kindly give me a solution... If i am able to: get the terminal pop up with executing the nn.class,and i am able to enter the input,then it will do... Thanks in advance...

  • Headless, scriptable Firefox/Webkit on linux?

    - by Parand
I'm looking to automate some web interactions, namely periodic download of files from a secure website. This basically involves entering my username/password and navigating to the appropriate URL. I tried simple scripting in Python, followed by more sophisticated scripting, only to discover this particular website is using some obnoxious javascript and flash based mechanism for login, rendering my methods useless. I then tried HTMLUnit, but that doesn't seem to want to work either. I suspect use of Flash is the issue. I don't really want to think about it any more, so I'm leaning towards scripting an actual browser to log in and grab the file I need. Requirements are: Run on linux server (ie. no X running). If I really need to have X I can make that happen, but I won't be happy. Be reliable. I want to start this thing and never think about it again. Be scriptable. Nothing too sophisticated, but I should be able to tell the browser the various steps to take and pages to visit. Are there any good toolkits for a headless, X-less scriptable browser? Have you tried something like this and if so do you have any words of wisdom?

  • Best Planar graph program

    - by brian
In graph theory, a planar graph is a graph that can be embedded in the plane, i.e., it can be drawn on the plane in such a way that its edges intersect only at their endpoints. What is the best open source program for drawing the planar graph with support of input nodes size and fixed drawing boundary region

  • Generating a reasonable ctags database for Boost

    - by Robert S. Barnes
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and I ran the command: $ ctags -R --c++-kinds=+p --fields=+iaS --extra=+q -f ~/.vim/tags/stdlibcpp /usr/include/c++/4.2.4/ to generate a ctags database for the standard C++ library and STL ( libstdc++ ) on my system for use with the OmniCppComplete vim script. This gave me a very reasonable 4MB tags file which seems to work fairly well. However, when I ran the same command against the installed Boost headers: $ ctags -R --c++-kinds=+p --fields=+iaS --extra=+q -f ~/.vim/tags/boost /usr/include/boost/ I ended up with a 1.4 GB tags file! I haven't tried it yet, but that seems likes it's going to be too large to be useful. Is there a way to get a slimmer, more usable tags file for my installed Boost headers? Edit Just as a note, libstdc++ includes TR1, which has allot of Boost libs in it. So there must be something weird going on for libstdc++ to come out with a 4 MB tags file and Boost to end up with a 1.4 GB tags file.

  • Kernel panic when altering system_call in entry.S

    - by EpsilonVector
I'm trying to implement a system call counter, and as a result I included an int value in task_struct, and a function that increments it in a separate file. This function is supposed to be called from system_call right before it actually calls the required sys_call (I have my reasons to call it before and not after). However, if I place it before the sys_call then after compiling and booting there's a kernel panic ("tried to kill init_idle"), and if I place it right after the sys_call, it works. What's the difference and how do I overcome this? Here's the relevant code ENTRY(system_call) pushl %eax # save orig_eax SAVE_ALL GET_CURRENT(%ebx) testb $0x02,tsk_ptrace(%ebx) # PT_TRACESYS jne tracesys cmpl $(NR_syscalls),%eax jae badsys call update_counter /*This causes a kernel panic*/ call *SYMBOL_NAME(sys_call_table)(,%eax,4) movl %eax,EAX(%esp) # save the return value

  • Setting exit status when creating core dump

    - by Zitrax
For example calling exit(100) would exit the application with status 100, and calling raise(SIGABRT) aborts the application with status 134 while creating a core dump. But what if I want the core dump with status 100 or any other arbitrary value. How can I do that ? I know there are several signals that triggers a core dump, but they seem to have fixed exit statuses.

  • How to write mmap input memory to O_DIRECT output file?

    - by Friedrich
    why doesn't following pseudo-code work (O_DIRECT results in EFAULT) in_fd = open("/dev/mem"); in_mmap = mmap(in_fd); out_fd = open("/tmp/file", O_DIRECT); write(out_fd, in_mmap, PAGE_SIZE); while following does (no O_DIRECT) in_fd = open("/dev/mem"); in_mmap = mmap(in_fd); out_fd = open("/tmp/file"); write(out_fd, in_mmap, PAGE_SIZE); I guess it's something with virtual kernel pages to virtual user pages, which cannot be translated in the write call? Best regards, Friedrich

  • Remove files from Bazaar

    - by Kristopher Ives
I'm using Bazaar (bzr) to keep source code for a website updated, but we've ran into a problem when we remove files from version control. The files we are removing are ones we never intended to version to begin with. When this happens we use bzr rm --keep to remove the file from version control, but keep the file in the file system. Doing a bzr push or bzr pull results in the removed file(s) being removed on the other branches (other sites that use our code) We need a way to make sure that a bzr push or bzr pull doesn't actually remove those from the working copy. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Compiling x264 with mp4 support problem

    - by johnas
I'm trying to compile x264 with mp4 output support. I download the latest version from their git by typing git clone git://git.videolan.org/x264.git When I run ./configure it configures and I'm able to make it. But when i try to configure it with ./configure --enable-mp4-output and then try to make it, it returns a strange error, indicating that there is a compilation error. The error message looks like: ... Lots of similar errors ... output/mp4.c:297: warning: implicit declaration of function ‘gf_isom_add_sample’ output/mp4.c:297: error: ‘mp4_hnd_t’ has no member named ‘p_file’ output/mp4.c:297: error: ‘mp4_hnd_t’ has no member named ‘i_track’ output/mp4.c:297: error: ‘mp4_hnd_t’ has no member named ‘i_descidx’ output/mp4.c:297: error: ‘mp4_hnd_t’ has no member named ‘p_sample’ output/mp4.c:299: error: ‘mp4_hnd_t’ has no member named ‘p_sample’ output/mp4.c:300: error: ‘mp4_hnd_t’ has no member named ‘i_numframe’ I've tried different releases. I've installed gpac, ffmpeg, and tried numerous tips from the net. But still can't get it to work. The reason I want it with mp4 output is because I want to use ffmpeg to create mp4 files encoded with x264. I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 32 bits.

  • Where has my parallel port gone? ioperm(888,1,1) returns -1.

    - by marcusw
I have an old Dell Dimension 8200 running Gentoo which I use solely to control various things using the parallel port. After shutting it down a few weeks ago, I started it up again today and tried to access the parallel port like I usually do. Unfortunately, my code bombed out when it tried to call ioperm(888,1,1) to grab the parallel port which returned an error code of -1. There have been no changes to the system be it hardware or software, no updates, no tweaking, no dropping the case, no over-amping the data pins, nothing. The port and the software have been working fine for months with no changes, and were working fine when I shut it down last. Running my code with root privileges changes nothing. What is breaking this and how can I fix it?
