  I have following idea about processing keyboard input. We capture input in "main" Game class like this: protected override void Update(GameTime gameTime) { this.CurrentKeyboardState = Keyboard.GetState(); // main :Game class logic here base.Update(gameTime); this.PreviousKeyboardState = this.CurrentKeyboardState; } then, reuse keyboard states (which have internal scope) in all other game components. The reasons behind this are 1) minimize keyboard processing load, and 2) reduce "pollution" of all other classes with similar keyboard state variables. Since I'm quite a noob in both game and XNA development, I would like to know if all of this sounds reasonable.

• Rhythmbox goes crazy if I change keyboard layout

  Not so trivial to explain but I'll try. Launch Rhythmbox Insert a CD in the CD-ROM The CD is not automatically identified (it's of a not very famous Russian band) I'm manually setting track names and... Magic, black magic! If I change the keyboard layout (RU <- EN) during editing then Rhythmbox kicks me out of the editing. So if a track name contains both Russian and English words I'm compelled to write one part, press Enter (so that the changes are not lost), change layout, click on the track name, write another part in the opposite layout. In some tricky names I have to do this several times. By the way, I use Alt+Shift to change layout. Any ideas?

• Can't bind gnome-do to Super + Space or Ctrl+Alt+Space

  With today's updates to 12.04 I can no longer bind gnome-do to either ctrl+alt+space or super+space. With 11.10 it wasn't possible to use super+space, on a fresh install of 12.04 super+space was working properly. Today it stopped working, if I try to bind control+alt+space then the controlkey shows up in the keyboard binding as Primary. I am running Unity, which in the past blocked super+space, it seemed to have stopped blocking it on 12.04. It shouldn't affect ctrl+alt+space. Configuring either binding produces the following error in the gnome-do output: libdo-WARNING **: Binding 'space' failed! libdo-WARNING **: Binding 'space' failed! I'm stuck binding to shift+alt+space.

• Resources for Test Driven Development in Web Applications?

  I would like to try and implement some TDD in our web applications to reduce regressions and improve release quality, but I'm not convinced at how well automated testing can perform with something as fluffy as web applications. I've read about and tried TDD and unit testing, but the examples are 'solid' and rather simple functionalities like currency converters, and so on. Are there any resources that can help with unit testing content management and publication systems? How about unit testing a shopping cart/store (physical and online products)? AJAX? Googling for "Web Test Driven Development" just gets me old articles from several years ago either covering the same examples of calculator-like function or discussions about why TDD is better than anything (without any examples).

• Accenture Launches Smart Grid Data Management Platform

  Accenture announced today it has launched the Accenture Intelligent Network Data Enterprise (INDE), a data management platform to help utilities design, deploy and manage smart grids. INDE's functionality can be enabled by an array of third party technologies. In addition, Accenture plans to offer utilities the option of implementing the INDE solution based on a pre-configured suite of Oracle technologies. The Oracle-based version of INDE will accelerate the design of smart grids and help reduce the costs and risks associated with smart grid implementation. • How to bind mouse buttons to keys?

  I have a Logitech MX400 Laser Mouse which has 5 buttons + 4 for vertical/horizontal scrolling. I would like it set up so instead of horizontal scrolling pressing right on the scrollwheel will send Ctrl+Tab and left will send Ctrl+Shift+Tab, which will allow me to cycle through tabs in browsers. Also, it would be nice if I could remap the middle button to one of the ones on the side as it is really hard to press down. Another bonus would be if I could write a script that allows me to define what buttons do what dependent on which window is currently active. I have tried using xmodmap but I could only see how to rearrange buttons, not have them send key signals. Thanks in advance. • Unable to get screen signal after purge FGLRX

  I thought that my ATI driver was not running well so I wanted to re-instal it completely. I did: sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx* sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon and after a boot I wanted to intal the ATI driver BUT at the boot no more signal to my screen. Since, every time I turn on my PC it gets to purple screen and then screen shuts down ! Note that: Even if the screen is off, PC seems to be running almost well: I m still able to use my network to access data shared with NFS. Using live USB I have no screen problem. I tried to plug my screen on an alternative output but it did not work. I tried CTRL+ALT+F1 while being on purple screen but it does not do anything, screen shut down anyway. I m going to try the SHIFT thing and learn from blackscreen wiki...

• Oracle Solaris 11.1 Security Lab

  Recently I developed a set of lab exercises for an Oracle OpenWorld Hands On Lab, entitled HOL10201, Reduce Risk with Oracle Solaris Access Control to Restrain Users and Isolate Applications. This explored the new Extended Policy for privilege assignments in Oracle Solaris 11.1.  Today, Oracle Solaris 11.1 has been officially released via the Package Repository. Today's release and branch are numbered 0.5.11-0.175.1.0.0.24.2, which means it is based on build 24b of 11.1 which is, in turn, based on build 175a of 11.0.  There is a good summary of new features available here: Oracle Solaris 11.1 - What's New . Pages 5 thru 7 give an overview of some of the new security enhancements. There is much more information available in the newly published documentation for Oracle Solaris 11.1. • A Method for Reducing Contention and Overhead in Worker Queues for Multithreaded Java Applications

  A java.net article, rich in practical resources, by IBM India Labs’ Sathiskumar Palaniappan, Kavitha Varadarajan, and Jayashree Viswanathan, explores the challenge of writing code in a way that that effectively makes use of the resources of modern multicore processors and multiprocessor servers.As the article states: “Many server applications, such as Web servers, application servers, database servers, file servers, and mail servers, maintain worker queues and thread pools to handle large numbers of short tasks that arrive from remote sources. In general, a ‘worker queue’ holds all the short tasks that need to be executed, and the threads in the thread pool retrieve the tasks from the worker queue and complete the tasks. Since multiple threads act on the worker queue, adding tasks to and deleting tasks from the worker queue needs to be synchronized, which introduces contention in the worker queue.” The article goes on to explain ways that developers can reduce contention by maintaining one queue per thread. It also demonstrates a work-stealing technique that helps in effectively utilizing the CPU in multicore systems. Read the rest of the article here.

  Following the tradition from last year, inviting all JavaOne and Oracle Open World attendees to run with me in one of the 10 best cities to run in the US. The running route will start at Ferry Plaza on Embarcadero, go through Fisherman's Wharf, straight up Hyde St, couple of loops around Crooked Street and then back the same route to end at Ferry Plaza. Here is the complete clickable map: The Hyde Street (~300ft in 0.75 miles) and Lombard (~200 ft in 0.15 mile) are challenging elevations and you may cover them once only. Alternatively you may take a simpler route out-and-back by running further up to Marina and Crissy Field. When ? Monday, Oct 1, 2012 I plan to leave at 6:17am PT from the starting point and certainly hope you can join me. Oracle is doing several things to keep Oracle Open World and JavaOne sustainable and reduce the conference footprint. Lets do our share to keep the conference green! • Most popular Open-Source License on github?

  This is a two part question: 1) What is the most popular Open-Source License used by developers on github? 2) Assuming people follow the rules - will this license (the most popular on github) assure that my name is always associated with the project - regardless of how it forks or is picked up elsewhere. The reason I ask is I have not yet used github nor released an open source project. My main incentive for releasing a particular project is to develop a name for myself and improve my resume. I have a lot of reading to do, but I suspect that knowing the most popular licensing schemes will reduce my reading and my learning curve.

  I have a networked multi-user collaborative application. To maintain a consistent virtual world, I send updates for objects from a master peer to a guest peer. The update state contains x,y,z coordinates of object center and his rotation matrix(CHAI3d api used a 3x3 matrix) with 30Hz frequency. I want to reduce this update rate and want to send with a reduced update rate. I want a predictor on both peers. When the predicted value is outside, say a error value of 10% in comparison to master peers objects original state the master peer triggers a state update. Now for position I used velocity,position updates so that the guest peer can extrapolate position. Like velocity for position what parameter should I use for rotation extrapolition?

• Approached to build app centered around new API and suddenly API is abandoned

  This isn't a huge deal, but I was approached by colleagues/friends to build an app using their new API. There was some potential for pecuniary gain for me depending on app usage. I spent a considerable amount of time polishing the mobile app, based on my assumption that, having been approached in a serious way, that the company would not suddenly shift focus and abandon the API. I wasn't even given so much as a heads up that the API was dead even though I had an app in production that relied on it... For the most part, building the app was a learning experience which I enjoyed, but I don't think I'd have expended all the effort if I knew that the company wasn't as serious about the API as their reaching out to me clearly indicated. How, if at all, would you react?

• Reducing brightness of large areas containing bright colours

  I do most of my work in either a terminal or a web browser. I prefer my terminals to use bright colours on dark. I would really prefer that web pages tended to look this way as well, but that's not under my control. The problem is that when I switch from a light-on-dark terminal to a dark-on-light web page (like this one), my eyes have to adjust to the overall rise in screen brightness. Apparently this is bad for your eyes, in addition to being painful and annoying. It would seem to be possible for some layer of the interface to adjust the displayed colours for parts of the screen, or perhaps for particular windows, to reduce the brightness of the brighter areas of the screen. Can this be done, possibly with a Compiz extension?

• How do I reset my password?

  I inherited a machine with Ubuntu desktop installed. It has a password in place and I have no idea what the password may be. I cannot get to the command line to use the methods I have found online. No matter how many times I press "Shift" during the boot process it still goes all the way to the desktop login. I never see grub. I am not sure which version I have but I think may be 9 or 10. • detecting when you are going to reach your hit limit for Google Analytics free account

  I am a user of a free Google Analytics account and i'm slightly concerned that I may be approaching the 10,000,000 hit (Pageviews, Events etc) per month. Google state in their documentation: These limits apply to the Web Property / Property / Tracking ID. 10 million hits per month per property If you go over this limit, the Google Analytics team might contact you and ask you upgrade to Premium or implement client sampling to reduce the amount of data being sent to Google Analytics. However, I note that there is nothing to say that you can review or check up on your current usage for the month. I have administrator access to the Google Analytics account, but I see no feature that lets me check up on my monthly usage. I don't know if Google offer this, either by means of the admin interface or via their support channels - but it would certainly be a useful feature. Is there anyway for a free GA user to obtain this information?
