• Sceptic in a SCRUM Team

  My company has recently switched to an Agile WoW and as a part of it we've started using SCRUM. While I'm very comfortable with it and feel that this WoW is superior to a traditional one, some of my teammates don't share the same opinion. In fact they are very skeptical about "all that agile stuff", and don't take it seriously. As an example, one of the teammates is always late on the meetings, and doesn't really care about it. The management IMO tries not to notice this (maybe because it's a new Wow, and it takes time for the people to get used to it). My question is, how to address this issue not raising a conflict inside the team?

• Working with logout dialog box - text error

  I am having a problem with the shutdown dialog box for Ubuntu 12.04. If I am logged in as any user and press shutdown, I see the box with the question 'Are you sure..." and its usual options. Shutting down when I am not logged in as a specific user, however, displayed only square boxes. An image of this error can be found here: I believe this error started a few weeks ago when i accidentally changed the group for my root system directory, so it might be a permission thing or an improperly assigned group lingering somewhere. The trouble is that I don't know where the text for this box is stored, and no idea where to begin checking. Can any one point me in the right direction?

• How can I make a collection of mini-games in XNA where the user can download packs of minigames and the main .exe can run them without being altered?

  I'm currently making a PC game in XNA. It's actually a collection of mini-games (there's 3 mini-games at the moment) however I plan to make and add more, in downloadable 'packs'. My question is, what's the best way to achieve this? Currently my thoughts are: Create a 'game' interface Build games to this interface but create them as .dlls Have the main .exe file scan a directory and load in the .dlls at runtime. I've not messed around with the idea much, but I know there are applications at-least that use this plug-in approach (Notepad++ seems to), but I'm not sure of any games that do (although I'm sure they must exist). However it seems that this is a problem that has been solved previously, so I'm wondering if there's any form of established best-practice.

  I am running a network of websites with notes, homeworks, essays, etc. where users share their own content. I'm having real trouble with the latest Google updates (penguin, panda, etc) because the content is mainly poor-quality and with the same topic. For that reason, I want to create more websites and have more probabilites to appear in the SERPs. My question is: does Google analyzes related websites in order to exclude it from the results? I've think about distribute the websites around the world, in different hostings, but I'm afraid that Google would link it by their analytics, webmaster tools or adsense account, is that possible? What other recommendations do you have?

• Can you change a license once you pick one?

  I am working on a product that I don't feel is completely ready but I have a set of users that are very interested in using it now as "alpha" testers. I would like to give them the product now for free as "alpha" testers, but I would like to later license the software. Is this possible? Can anyone point me to any links/books/articles/etc? Thanks. EDIT: Due to the lack of my clarity and the reponses to the question I thought I should add this statement. I haven't decided if I am going to close-source or open-source this project yet. The user base that wants to get their hands on it now has kind of surprised me and I was concerned about what my options are as far as being able to give it to them now as open-source and later change to closed-source, or even vice versa. • Looking for full web based booking system

  I've searched around here but could not find any booking system that would suit my need. I hope maybe you can help me out. I've already seen question #11379 over here. Solutions provided there are not helping and scripts not interesting. I'm looking for a booking system that support infinite number of hotels/rooms/pricingschemes. There should be unlimited number of hotel owner/users, who can access control panel and set availability for their hotel. Or create seasonal prices and adjust them. I should be able to have 15% booking fee paid through credit cart. I can work on integration with my system, it just needs to have correct APi/functionality to support this. I love wordpress so if there are some nice plugins for that, I'm open for suggestions. But this is not a must. It should be php/mysql based as I'm not good at anything else :)

• Two "subdomains" crossing search results

  My question relates to two websites, each of which is a "Calvary Christian College", however in two totally different locations and unrelated to each other entirely (except by name, and domain). All schools in the state are issued a .qld.edu.au, in this case calvary.qld.edu.au and calvarycc.qld.edu.au. Now what's interesting is that these domains are crossing each other in sitelinks for searches such as "calvary christian college townsville" (if you check the sitelinks 2/6 are to a different domain). I've put a demotion in for this ages ago (we control calvary.qld.edu.au), however we're seeing no change on the results page. I have been able to get the owners of calvarycc.qld.edu.au to submit demotions for our domain, which should go in sometime this week. What can we do to tell Google that these websites are not interchangeable, despite both appearing as "subdomains" of qld.edu.au. We can possibly open channels of communication with the administrators of qld.edu.au but will need to tell them what we need to change, and at this point I'm out of ideas.

  I checked various questions on Stack Overflow but one thing every logic lacks. Let me demonstrate using Python: while True: user_input = raw_input() if type(user_input) == str: print 'ERROR' else: print 'BINGO' Also, we cannot use input() in place of raw_input() as it gives the error:Traceback (most recent call last): File ".\test.py", line 3, in <module> user_input = int(input()) File "<string>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name 'asdf' is not defined The problem here is that raw_input converts the user input into string so it always prints 'ERROR' and if I change the second line to user_input = int(raw_input) then, it gives an error: Traceback (most recent call last): File ".\test.py", line 3, in <module> user_input = int(raw_input()) ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'asdf' I tried this with try and except but it shall work fine to check integer but not a string. I feel that this question may be marked as a duplicate but I think that this query is important, if logically taken.

• Should I choose 10.04 LTS or 10.10?

  I'm new to Ubuntu (and Linux) but I want to give it a go. I've spent a few evenings trying to get 10.10 to run but I think my nVidia 8400 GS is causing trouble; only recovery mode with failsafeX gets me to the desktop (low-res but seems to be fully functional otherwise). Given that the xx.04 vesions are long-term support, I'm wondering whether it would be smarter for me to use that. I don't need to be on the cutting edge - I prefer to have a system that just works, long-term. Later I hope to move my media center and wife's netbook over too. Question: Why should I (not?) choose the 10.04 LTS version over the newest 10.10 version?

• Can I use a desktop as a network server?

  Pardon me if I'm asking the wrong question. But I am a newbie in networking and I'm not sure what direction to go on this. I have just setup an Ubuntu Desktop. I am planning to convert it to a network server without losing the GUI interface (again, I'm a newbie) and use it to manage and monitor user access to a network with a small number of network terminals all running on Windows. My purpose is to use the new server to filter sites accessed by each terminals, monitor sites being visited by employees and grant access to both group and user-specific folders based on their IP address. Is this possible? What server software do I need to install? How do I structure the hardware? (I have a router, a hub, the Ubuntu server and the network terminals) How do I assign privileges to users and monitor them at the same time? Thank you in advance for your replies.

If you built a really great website, how could you have it hosted at low cost but so that it reassures customers that their data is safe and available. As an example, what if I have a web application I developed for small companies to use for their accounting, a replacement for Quickbooks. Aside from getting a bunch of money from VCs or Angels, how would you be able to host this so that you could guarantee your customers that their data won't be lost, and the site will always be up so that they can always get to their data?

• Is there a size limit when using UICollectionView as tiled map for iOS game?

  I'm working on a turn-based strategy game for iOS, (picture Civilization 2 as an example), and I'm considering using a UICollectionView as my game map. Each cell would be a tile, and I could use the "didSelectCell" method to handle player interaction with each tile. Here's my question: I know that UICollectionViewCells are dequeued and reused by the OS, so does that mean that the map could support an effectively infinitely-large map, so long as only a few cells are onscreen at a time? However many cells were onscreen would be held in memory, and obviously the data source would take up some memory, but would my offscreen map be limited to a certain size or could it be enormous so long as the number of cells visible at any one time wasn't too much for the device to handle? Basically, is there any memory weight to offscreen cells, or do only visible cells have any impact?

  I have been looking around for implementation details of behavior trees, the best descriptions I found were by Alex Champarand and some of Damian Isla's talk about AI in Halo 2 (the video of which is locked up in the GDC vault sadly). However, both descriptions fall short of helping one actually create a BT, one particular question has been bugging me for a while. When is the tree in a behavior tree evaluated? Furthermore: If the tree is in the middle of executing a sequence of actions (patrolling waypoints) and a higher priority impulse comes in (distraction sound) , how to switch to that side of the tree seamlessly without resorting to a state machine like system and if it is decided that the impulse was irrelevant (the distraction is too far away to affect this guard), how to go back to the last thing that the guard was doing ? I have quite a few questions like this and I don't wish to flood the board with separate queries so if you know of any resource where questions like these can be answered I would be very grateful.

• plotting histograms in ROOT with varying variable names

  I am not sure how to phrase this question correctly, but this is what I am trying to do. A single histogram can be plotted using cern ROOT with a following command, (TH1F*)electron->Draw(); But I have tens of histograms named in a sequence, such as electron1, elecron2, electron3, etc, and I want to write a simple loop to plot them all. I tried using sprintf and a simple for loop, but ROOT doesn't like it. char name[20]; (TH1F*)electron->Draw(); for(int j=0;j<5;j++){ sprintf(name, "%s%d","electron",j); (TH1F*)name->Draw("same"); } What am I doing wrong? • Share on Facebook does not show thumbnail images

  I have a PHP application which has a "Share on Facebook" button that, On the development server shows the thumbnail images correctly and allows the user to select between them On the live server, it does NOT show the thumbnail images at all. The relevant portion of the .htaccess file is: # Set up caching on media files for 2 days <FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|flv)$"> ExpiresDefault A172800 Header append Cache-Control "public" </FilesMatch> I'm using the exact same set of php files and .htaccess, but the server configuration is different. What could be causing this? Note that the text appears fine. Edit1 We are also doing some URL rewriting related to images in the .htaccess (on both servers): ...   I really should not be mentioning the name of the book, but the first time I read it (during my under-grad days) I almost concluded that data structure was a bad course to pick. Which brings me to the question I am asking here. What makes a programming or data structure or algorithm book tick? Clearly, lucid explanation is one. But I also realize that organization of the material is very important and so is diagrams. What else? Some pointers would obviously help when I hang out in my neighborhood computer book shop the next time.

• 2D game big background images for maps

  Update: this question is general, not specific to Sprite Kit or a single language/platform. I'm toying with Sprite Kit with an idea to make a 2D side-scroller. Now the backgrounds for the maps are going to be hand-drawn and surely bigger than retina display, so the maps could span more than 1 screen in both axis. I imagine loading such a huge image could mean trouble and I don't plan to use tiling. I'm not sure how Sprite Kit splits images bigger than max texture size, if it does. I could split the images myself and use more sprites for each part of the background. What is the usual way to handle this?

• Which folders need to be backedup for migration in Joomla?

  I have never used Joomla before, so this might be a noobish question. I have tried searching, but haven't found anything relevant. I'm helping someone update & migrate their old website, built on the Joomla framework. Currently it is running on Joomla 1.5.8 which is an ancient version. I've convinced them to upgrade Joomla to atleast 2.5 I have already taken the database backup. Most links I have seen talk of backing up the entire public_html folder (The website runs on a shared host). But in my fresh Joomla installation there are several folders that are in the public_html folder. So which of the folders in the public_html folder are from the content of the website, and which are of the old Joomla framework? I'm afraid that I might overwrite files of the new Joomla framework with the old framework, if copy all the files and folders into the new installation.

• Software to create a video slideshow?

  I have a bunch of pictures I'd like to make into a basic slideshow, as a video (e.g. mpeg/avi). What software is available to do this? I started using PiTiVi based on recommendation in another question, which seemed nice at first. However, it's very unstable - just crashed my whole system! Regardless, it won't let me do anything over 10 seconds because the timeline keeps jumping back to the start any time I try and move/resize a clip. All I need is to fade between some images. Anything out there?

  Hi all, I'm using Marty Alchin's Django app that creates historical records (add, change, delete) based on models found in other Django apps (found in chapter 11 of Pro Django). Question: how do I implement this historical_records app into my other generic Django apps while still maintaining loose coupling? For example, I have a generic app (forecast) that manages a Forecast (of any other model). For one project, I'd like to use historical_records so that I can track changes to a Forecast instance.
