• Ubuntu cannot access internet, LAN is fine

  I have an Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server that is directly connected to our Comcast Business Gateway modem and I have configured it with 1 of our 5 allotted Static IPs. My other machines on our LAN can connect to this server (via ssh, web, ping, etc.) but I cannot access this server from outside our network, and this machine cannot get out to the internet either (ping google.com fails with unknown host). Here is my /etc/networking/interfaces file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 173.162.54.19 netmask 255.255.255.248 broadcast 173.162.54.23 gateway 173.162.54.22 and my /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 68.87.77.130 nameserver 68.87.72.130 output from sudo route -n: Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 173.162.54.16 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.248 U 0 0 0 eth0 0.0.0.0 173.162.54.22 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 I have a Windows 2008 machine with an almost identical Static IP, static DNS setup and it works correctly, can access it within the LAN and also from public internet, the Windows machine and the Ubuntu machine are both directly connected to the Comcast Business Gateway. I have tried rebooting Ubuntu, rebooting my Comcast modem, but nothing seems to make it work. I'm an Ubuntu noob, is there some other config I need to apply to make this work? • What is the right option of programming languages and tools for building our website?

  We are 3 persons trying to build a large website which will be available in 3 languges. However, we will start with one language and with small idea then we are going to improve it and make it larger! What do you think the best tools and language that we should use? We are caring alot about the speed of loading the pages and tools that provide excellent qulaity with cheaper fees. Edit: We are graphic designers, so we did not choose the programming language yet. But we studied computer science and we have an idea but we found that this is the best place to ask the question and expect the right answer from you. Should we use ASP.NET for example? or PHP? We do not want an expesive option that will cost us alot in the future and we do not want to change the technology at least for the first 5 years. Thanks!

• Ways to find a tutor for 1st year University student

  I tried searching here (and SO) without much luck. I also stared at the yellow box to the right and think this question is relatively on topic and can be answered. A co-worker asked me if I had any suggestions for how to find a tutor for his son. In this specific case, it was for Eclipse and Java, but it got me thinking about good general strategies one could use in situations like this. He preferred a local 1-to-1, but I suppose online might be a reasonable (or perhaps more likely) alternative. Any suggested strategies?

• Creating a portfolio of projects [closed]

  As I pursue the path of becoming a programmer, I would like to build up a portfolio of projects I worked on at my current job so that I can eventually get programming work elsewhere (either as an employee, contractor, one man consulting shop, etc). Some of these were things I coded myself, others I was instrumental in the architecture, design and functionality (ie, not as a programmer but more of a BA). How do I show the work that I have done to others on the projects that I have produced for the company I work at? This is all internal software, so it's not something that the outside world would be able to use, and some of our products contain proprietary financial market tools and it would not be prudent to share those with the outside world. My guess is that screenshots would definitely be out of the question, as well as functional descriptions of the software.

• How do I clear all gnome shell notifications?

  I use Jupiter as a power manager. Now I get a good number of notifications from it. I do not have problem with the fact that I get all these notifications. I do however, want to be able to clear all gnome shell notifications with a few clicks. Currently, my entire bottom edge of the screen is filled with notifications and I do not wish to clear each item one by one. So my question is, how do I clear these notifications? If this is not possible in the ui, is it possible to write an extension to do it? Where should I suggest this feature to gnome developers? Gnome forums are almost dead now, the administrator has not activated my created account since 5 days!

  QUESTION: How should you handle compound words when programming? Are there any good lists available online for developers of generally accepted technology-related compound words? I can see how this is highly ambiguous, so should I just use common-sense? EXAMPLE: I would be inclined to do this: filename NOT FileName or login NOT LogIn However, the microsoft documentation indicates that filename is not compound.   I'm graduating college, about to start a junior software engineering position, and I've been wondering how much I'm going to be expected to do on what kind of timeline. I mean, in python I can write maybe 500 lines in 8 hours. In C, maybe 200 lines in 8 hours. And that's a big maybe. (I'm f#$*ing terrible with C.) Other languages are somewhere in between. I don't even know if that's ridiculously slow or normal or even good, hence the question. How much code do you write a day? It would be helpful to specify what language/technology you're using, and to make note if there are big differences between them like with myself.

  Hi, We have a domain with URL, lets say: http://www.xxxxstaging.com/abc.php?id=10 which is having a pretty good ranking for some keywords in google. However, this is our staging website and due to some historical reason, it was exposed to public. Now we have a production domain (the one we want to be publicly available), say: http://www.xxxxproduction.com/abc.php?id=10 which have exactly the same html output as xxxxstaging.com our question is, for the exactly same keyword search, it never appear in any page of google. Is it possible for us to "switch" the ranking in google, either tell the robot that they are indeed the same website, or tell google to change it for us? Thank you.

Is it built-in processor functionality (to emulate being 64-bit) or is it software dependent? When does it make sense for a 32-bit processor to run 64-bit operations?

  I'm running a Google App Engine dev server on Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop in a VirtualBox VM, on a Windows 7 host. According to this question I have the following setup: The VM networking is set to use Host-only network adapter. Internet connection sharing (ICS) is enabled in Windows. For ICS, the Windows VirtualBox network port and the Ubuntu wired connection have fixed IPs. The Ubuntu VM can access the internet. I can ping the guest from the host. On the host, if I put the guest IP address in Chrome's address bar, it says it can not connect. What do I need to do from here to access the GAE dev server that is running on Localhost:8080?

  I can't believe I'm raising this question after years, but after a fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.10, I'm unable to connect Pidgin to Google Talk. I use a Google Apps domain name, and the settings that I'm using are : Protocol : XMPP Username : **** Domain : ********.com Resource : Home In the advanced tab, Connection security : Require encryption. UNCHECK Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted steams Connect port : 5222 Connect sever : talk.google.com File transfer proxies : proxy.eu.jabber.org Bosh URL : (blank) In the proxy tab, No proxy. I had used these same settings on 12.04 and it had worked like a charm. Any help will be appreciated.

• Problems with the colors on my screen. How can I check if it's a hardware problem?

  On my EEE PC netbook some colors are not displayed properly. Specifically, dark gradients such as in the window title do not look very smooth, but rather look like a sequence of a couple of different colors. This is especially visible when opening a menu, for example the "File" menu in Firefox. As you know this one is black, and it looks terrible on my screen. It is not just black, but the colors look really graded and far from a smooth gradient or anything. Now I am wondering: Is this a hardware or software issue? And how can I check this? If it should be a fixable problem I think it would be worth another question. Note that I am using Natty. If my problem description is not good enough I can try to take a photo.

• Which office suite is the ideal alternative to MSOffice?

  Let's say I want to drop MSOffice permanently and switch to a free alternative, not having the need of opening the documents on other PC's except my own (I can also carry a portable version on a pendrive and edit the docs anywhere). I know 3 free office suites - LibreOffice, Abiword and Calligra. Which one of these is the most complete and provides the best features to be a viable alternative to MSOffice, without compromising the quality of the work I can produce on Office apps? • Swap is not copied back into physical memory

  I have a question regarding swap and physical memory. Often times I run a program that requires a lot of memory and as a result I can see some of the data is copied from the physical memory into swap. However, once the program is terminated, and the physical memory is freed I can still see a considerable amount of data on swap which significantly slows down the system and is annoying! What is the reason behind this and how does the OS decide which part of data should go to swap? How long is this data supposed to be there and how is it "freed"?

  I have a question concerning the life cycle management of a/multiple project(s), more specific to the advantages/disadvantages of using technologies such as Maven. Currently we work in a continuous-integration environment but lots of things still need to be manually performed (dependency management, deploying, setting up documentation, generating stats, ...). My impression is that this approach often leads to errors, miscommunications or things just are forgotten. I know and have used Maven in the past but in smaller environments and I was always really enthusiastic about it. But I was wondering if someone could share some insights, experiences, pros, contras, ... about the use of Maven (or similar technology) in larger environments and for multiple projects. I would like to use the suggestions made here to start the debate about moving to the next level in project management!

• Get system info from C program?

  I'm writing a little program in C that I want to use to output some system stats to my HD44780 16x2 character display. The system I'll be working with is a Debian ARM system and, although irrelevant, the display is on the GPIO header.(The system is a Raspberry Pi). As an initial (somewhat unambitious) attempt, I'd like to start with something simple like RAM and CPU usage (I'm new to C). I understand that if I make external command calls I need to fork() and execve() (or some equiv that will let me return the results), what I would like to know is how I go about getting the information I want in a nice clean format that I can use. Surely I will not have to call (for e.g); free -h And then use awk or similar to chop out the piece I want? There must be a cleaner way? The question should be seen as more of a generic, what is best practice for getting info about the system in C (the RAM/CPU usage are just an initial example).

  Researching distributed source control management (specifically mercurial). My question is more or less what is the best practice for rejecting entire sets of code that fail testing? Example: A team is working on a hello world program. They have testers and a scheduled release coming up with specific features planned. Upcoming Release: Add feature A Add feature B Add feature C So, the developers make their clones for their features, do the work and merge them into a QA repo for the testers to scrutinize. Let's say the testers report back that "Feature B is incomplete and in fact dangerous", and they would like to retest A and C. End example. What's the best way to do all this so that feature B can easily be removed and you end up with a new repo that contains only feature A and C merged together? Recreate the test repo? Back out B? Other magic?

  Code Complete states that you should aways code into a language as opposed to code in it. By that, they mean Don't limit your programming thinking only to the concepts that are supported automatically by your language. The best programmers think of what they want to do, and then they assess how to accomplish their objectives with the programming tools at their disposal. (chapter 34.4) Doesn't this lead to using one style of programming in every language out there, regardless of the particular strengths and weaknesses of the language at hand? Or, to put the question in a more answerable format: Would you propose that one should try to encode one's problem as neatly as possible with the particulars of one's language, or should you rather search the most elegant solution overall, even if that means that you need to implement possibly awkward constructs that do not exist natively in one's language?

• Remembering user credentials in standalone Application
