• how to convince other we should move to hadoop?

  Everything I've read about Hadoop seems like exactly the technology we need to make our enterprise more scalable. We have terabytes of raw data that is in non-relational form (text files of some kind). We're quickly approaching the upper limits of what our centralized file server can handle and everyone is aware of this. Most people on the tech team, especially the more junior members of the tech team are all in favor of moving from the central file system to HDFS. The problem is, there is one key (most senior, etc.) member of the team who is resisting this change and every time Hadoop comes up, he tells us that we could simply add another file server and be in the clear. So, my question (and yes, it's really subjective, but I need more help with this than any of my other questions) is what steps can we take to get upper management to move forward with Hadoop despite the hesitation of one member of the team?

• Which folders need to be backedup for migration in Joomla?

  I have never used Joomla before, so this might be a noobish question. I have tried searching, but haven't found anything relevant. I'm helping someone update & migrate their old website, built on the Joomla framework. Currently it is running on Joomla 1.5.8 which is an ancient version. I've convinced them to upgrade Joomla to atleast 2.5 I have already taken the database backup. Most links I have seen talk of backing up the entire public_html folder (The website runs on a shared host). But in my fresh Joomla installation there are several folders that are in the public_html folder. So which of the folders in the public_html folder are from the content of the website, and which are of the old Joomla framework? I'm afraid that I might overwrite files of the new Joomla framework with the old framework, if copy all the files and folders into the new installation.

• How to solve cyclic dependencies in a visitor pattern

  When programming at work we now and then face a problem with visitors and module/project dependencies. Say you have a class A in a module X. And there are subclasses B and C in module Y. That means that module Y is dependent on module X. If we want to implement a visitor pattern to the class hierarchy, thus introducing an interface with the handle Operations and an abstract accept method in A, we get a dependency from module Y to module X, which we cannot allow for architectural reasons. What we do is, use a direct comparison of the types (i.e. instanceof, since we program in Java), which is not satisfying. My question(s) would be: Do you encounter this kind of problem in your daily work (or do we make poor architectural choices) and if so, how is your approach to solve this?

• Software to create a video slideshow?

  I have a bunch of pictures I'd like to make into a basic slideshow, as a video (e.g. mpeg/avi). What software is available to do this? I started using PiTiVi based on recommendation in another question, which seemed nice at first. However, it's very unstable - just crashed my whole system! Regardless, it won't let me do anything over 10 seconds because the timeline keeps jumping back to the start any time I try and move/resize a clip. All I need is to fade between some images. Anything out there?

• memory and time intensive php task

  Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything usable. I'm working on a project for a client and currently I have to loop through the users table which is about 3000 records and still growing. I have to do some calculations on a nightly basis which I am going to be using cron/php. The calculations script uses about 3.5mb of memory and takes about 1 second to run. When loading individual users my current php setup handles this fine, but if I try and loop through the user list my php script execution time runs out. I've read after doing some searching that I can make the page reload itself after each user calculation and just keep my previous place in the loop and this sounds like a good idea, but I wanted to hear some opinions from others that have handled similar situations and how you handled these types of tasks.   Background A site has multiple ccTLDs: example.com for the US, example.co.uk for UK users, example.de for Germans, etc. Googling for certain city keywords will return rich snippets with a list of Google Places: Problem When searching on Google Germany, the domain for US users (example.com) appears instead of the corresponding ccTLD (example.de). This is not good user experience, as users would most likely like to book on a site localized for them (e.g. language and currency). Question What solutions are there? Is it possible to return different ccTLDs in rich snippets for Google searches in Germany/UK? Ideas Would implementing the hreflang annotation resolve this? What about entering multiple corresponding URLs in the structured data markup?

  Hi All, Recently I went to an interview for a C development position. Instead of asking me questions, they just gave me 20 code snippets to find out two logical errors on each one. I just couldn't complete all of the 20 since it took me time to go through each of these code snippets. My question is: Is this the right way to judge a candidate? If yes, how can I improve over my error detection skills so that I don't need to waste a lot of time in the next interview?   I'm building a standard infographic where you mouse over a region and the image changes as you move. For instance, imagine a map of the world, and when you mouse over a country, that country glows and a panel shows statistics about that country. The implementation is to have a separate image for the glowing country, and a div element with the statistics, and the code shows these additional elements on a hover over the country. The question is: what should this do on a tablet, where there's no hover event? What's a good alternative navigation metaphor for this kind of situation on touch-only devices?

• Efficient way to check for changes to the contents of folders

  I am creating an application that maintains a database of files of a certain type in a given folder (and all subfolders) Initially the program will recurse the folders and add any file it finds of that type to the database. I want the application to have the ability to re-scan the folder and add any files that were not there the last time the folders were scanned. It can't use the date created property of the file because there is a high chance of a file being added to the folders that isn't a new file. I am wondering what the most efficient way of doing this is, and if there is a way that doesn't involve checking each file is in the database already (which, if there are 5000 files would mean 5000 queries of a list 5000 items in size, or 25 million 'checks' for the sql engine to perform) I suppose a more specific question to acheive the same goal would be - is there a property of a file (in Microsoft Windows) that will reliably tell you when that file arrived in that folder.

• Reassessment: What's a good analytics package to use for tracking user behavior in a native iOS app?

  Hello. I've been poking around google and SO for answers on this, but it doesn't seem to be very well discussed, so I thought I revisit the question. Is anyone using any analytics packages (like Google Analytics or Mixpanel) to track user behavior in their native iOS apps? The three I've come across are Flurry, Mixpanel, and Google Analytics. It sounds like Apple is still peeved at Flurry, so I don't want to mess with that. Mixpanel looks simple and easy to use, but I'd first like to hear from someone who has used it. Same goes with Google Analytics for the iPhone. I've just finished building an iPhone game and I'd like to begin tweaking it based on how the users are playing it. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with any of these analytics packages? Thanks so much!

  In Objective-C, there are several methods like initWithContentsOfFile:encoding:error: where one passes in a reference to an NSError object for the error: parameter. In this example, the value of the NSError object passed in can change based on what goes on at runtime when the method is being called and whether the body of the method was executed in a certain way successfully. In a way I think of this NSError object as sort of like a second return value from the method, and only differs from an object anObject in the statement return anObject; in that when this statement is called, execution leaves the method. So my question is, not only in the context of error handling in Objective-C, but in general, when should one use an "out" parameter in place of returning said value in a return statement?

• sell applications that run only on a GPL v2 Server

  I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. • How relevant is PHP today for browser games?

  I was the lead developer of 2 moderately successful browser games quite a few years back, and plan on working on a new game soon. At the time, I wrote them in pure PHP (no template engine or anything of the sort). I'd like to start working on a new game, but have been out of the web development world for a while. Reading around, I hear a lot of good about Rails, Django, Node.js, etc., with which I have no experience (although I know my way around Python, Javascript, and the others quite well). So my question is the following- if I were to go in my old ways and go with PHP again, would I be making things hard for myself? Would picking something more "trendy" have a real impact on my development? In addition, does anyone have any pointers relating to specifically developing browser games with these more modern tools?

• How do I clear all gnome shell notifications?

  I use Jupiter as a power manager. Now I get a good number of notifications from it. I do not have problem with the fact that I get all these notifications. I do however, want to be able to clear all gnome shell notifications with a few clicks. Currently, my entire bottom edge of the screen is filled with notifications and I do not wish to clear each item one by one. So my question is, how do I clear these notifications? If this is not possible in the ui, is it possible to write an extension to do it? Where should I suggest this feature to gnome developers? Gnome forums are almost dead now, the administrator has not activated my created account since 5 days!

  Replaceable parameter syntax for the console object in C#. I am taking the O'Reilly C# Course 1 and it is asking for a replaceable parameter syntax and it is not very clear on what that means. Currently I used this: double trouble = 99999.0009; double bubble = 11111.0001; Console.WriteLine(trouble * bubble); Am I missing the meaning of replaceable parameter syntax? Can someone provide an example for what I am looking for? Original question for the quiz: "Create two variables, both doubles, assign them numbers greater than 10,000, and include a decimal component. Output the result of multiplying the numbers together, but use replaceable parameter syntax of the Console object, and multiply the numbers within the call to the Console.WriteLine() method."

• Ubuntu cannot access internet, LAN is fine

  I have an Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server that is directly connected to our Comcast Business Gateway modem and I have configured it with 1 of our 5 allotted Static IPs. My other machines on our LAN can connect to this server (via ssh, web, ping, etc.) but I cannot access this server from outside our network, and this machine cannot get out to the internet either (ping google.com fails with unknown host).   I'm really hoping somebody with more experience can edit the question as per my examples of answers: • using version control • test driven development • debugging code (xdebug for php) • use of UML diagrams • use of OOP for maintainable, reusable code • use of frameworks (like Zend Framework for php) for rapid application development Anything else or an elaboration of what I mentioned above? Basically, I'm in the middle of forming a team of developers (I'm a developer myself) and I'd like some advice on how professional programmers/designers etc should work together and what standards/paradigms they should use.
