• Why is the network speed on my Mac Pro (early 2009) so slow?

  I have a really weird networking issue on my Mac Pro (Early 2009). I can’t get higher network speeds than about 2MBit/s. It doesn’t matter if this is over AirPort or one of the Ethernet ports. An iMac and a Mac mini in the same network with almost the same configuration get about 25-30 MBit/s. I’ve read a couple of things about this on the official Apple forums, but there is no helpful information. Anyone else with Mac Pro network speed issues and who knows how to solve them?

• Severe latency only on one machine and only when accessing intranet site

  I have one desktop machine that is having consistently high latency only when trying to load a page from an intranet site. Using the Chrome Developer Tools, the site shows a "Waiting" time of 4-5 seconds each page load. Other machines have <50ms, and the problem machine loads regular internet sites with <1s latency, so the problem is only on one machine and only when accessing the intranet site. This is a small business and all the hosts are on 192.168.0.1/24 I would have suspected a connection issue with the problem machine but normal internet sites are not having latency. Then I would have looked at connection issues with the intranet web server but other machines are not having latency to it. What else can I look at to troubleshoot this?

• How to force my laptop to use the discrete GPU?

  My laptop (Asus X7BSV) is stuck using only the integrated GPU. It has a nVidia GT540M as well, but I cannot get it to work. I am using a Windows 7 x64 with latest drivers. This occurred after I attached an external USB monitor I need for work, and since then I cannot swap back to the nVidia GPU (dxdiag for example says that the primary GPU is the Intel integrated one). Asus support asked me to completely reinstall the system, but that is something I do not want to do. I checked the BIOS, there is no option as to what GPU to use. The nVidia card itself is working, since I can use CUDA on it, and it worked with a Ubuntu Live CD. In the nVidia software management I tried setting it to global setting, high performance GPU (nVidia), but that had no impact. What am I missing here? I did uninstall/delete all drivers and software related to the external monitor, but that did not help.

  Thought one of the issues I'm experiencing with the following question is due to MTU rightfully so. ESXi 5 VM Putty session hangs, vSphere client timing out However, when I tried testing the maximum MTU size it seems there's just no limit. Thought Ethernet only allows maximum MTU.   I wonder if anyone could recommend resource or resources such as a good book that: explains how all the important protocols work and interact. I’m interested in those that are relevant in a typical home network and used over the Internet explains in detail how ADSL Internet connections work to the level of depth necessary so that I’m able to tweak and measure performance settings starts from the beginning but attempts to provide proper understanding rather than idiot-oriented steps to follow Basically, I’m interested in how these technologies work and tend to be implemented in hardware and software rather than “here’s what to do if…” I’m interested in Computer Networking by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and I wonder if anyone else has any experience with that title. It’s expensive but I could probably loan a copy for £3 from the library or so.

• How do ulimit -n and /proc/sys/fs/file-max differ?

  I notice that on a new CentOS image that I just booted up off of EC2 that the ulimit default is 1024 open files, but /proc/sys/fs/file-max is set at 761,408 and I'm wondering how these two limits work together. I'm guessing that ulimit -n is a per-user limit of number of file descriptors while /proc/sys/fs/file-max is system-wide? If that's the case, say I've logged in twice as the same user -- does each logged-in user have a 1024 limit on number of open files, or is it a limit of 1024 combined open files between each of those logged-in users? And is there much performance impact to setting your max file descriptors to a very high number, if your system isn't ever opening very many files?

• Timeouts when connecting to SQL Server since installing SP1 for Windows 7

  Hi, I just installed SP1 for windows 7 and I have severe performance degradation when connecting to SQL Server 2005 since then. Establishing connection takes more than 30 seconds while it's instantaneous on another computer. Firewall is disabled and I didn't make any change to the configuration. It happens both when trying to connect with a hostname and with an ip address. Everything else seems to be fine (for instance, I'm have no issue connecting to other computers with remote desktop) What can cause such a problem? Thanks in advance! Edit : uninstalling the SP1 solves the issue instantly.

  Here is my issues, which i am currently having, in my windows 7, When i go to one specific folder, .Please take a look, This is not my file, but just to get an idea, there is 10 file max no more than 500 MB, i am not able to remove it, or cut it, or move it, it starts that green bar loading and never finish, The problem is, after getting into this folder, my SONY VAIO starts, overheating and if i did not restart, nothing can stop it to be cool down . • What is the easiest way to get XtraDB for MySQL running on CentOS 5

  I'm having a lot of issues with a dedicated MySQL server and it seems like upgrading to the XtraDB version of InnoDB will probably have a positive effect, but I'm hesitant to get involved with it since I am not really a sysadmin and prefer to stick with things that start with "yum update". What is the easiest way to get XtraDB installed? Should I use the Percona server? MariaDB? OurDelta? Is there a way to avoid using custom RPMs and sticking to a repo instead? The current yum version of MySQL is 5.0.xx, whereas a lot of the alternate MySQL builds are based on 5.1.xx. How does this factor in? Do I need to figure out 5.1 on CentOS before working on getting XtraDB in? For bonus points: Do I need to seriously test XtraDB with my server before implementing it, or is it relatively safe to have the brief downtime for switching servers followed by putting the site back online with XtraDB?

• Sync a specific folder of contacts to iPhone

  Is there a simple way to organize contacts in Outlook/Entourage and only have a subset of them synchronize with the iPhone over Exchange ActiveSync? Our CEO has thousands of contacts in his mailbox, but would prefer if only a small portion of them synched to his phone over the air... The iPhone's performance takes a huge hit keeping that massive dataset in order. If he could put some of the records in subfolders or something and only sync the top level, I think that would work for him. Does anyone know if this is possible?

  I am new to handling issues on server. when my system tried to reboot I could see two installables to boot from. windows server 2012- current os windows server secondary plex. So when ever there is a system restart the system it stops at this screen. And since I am connecting to this server using RDP I have to wait for the hetzner console to click on of the os to boot. Even though the current os is set as default and time given is 30 sec, it still waits for a user input. So I want to know which of the two should I be using to boot and I just want one os.

• How can Facebook's session get mixed up because of NAT and/or Proxy

  Have received some reports from a customer (a very large company) they reported issues from clients who are using Facebook. These clients claim that once in a while when they log in to Facebook they end up in someone else's session. I know that network is NATed then Proxied before getting to Facebook.com. Although I'm not able to explain how this issue can occur. Is it possible that the Proxy is not sending the right session back to the clients? How can they end up with someone else's session since Facebook is cookie based session?? Anyone seen this before?

• DoubleCommand Non-Functional on 10.6.3.

  I have a 1st or 2nd generation MacBook running 10.6.3. I want to remap my enter key to Ctrl and my right option key to enter (Emacs… yeah) and DoubleCommand seems to be precisely what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately, after having installed the latest version, it seems to be doing absolutely nothing. The correct settings are saved and active, but none of the remapping is taking effect. Are there any known issues with other OS X plug-ins (I run pretty heavily modified) or extensions that I should be aware of? What could the issue be? I initially tried to set only the User settings and then logged out and logged back in but nothing happened. I then tried saving them to System as well and logged out and in and nothing. Then I restarted the machine… twice… and nothing happened. Thanks in advance!

  I'm looking for a simple way to share digital images and videos over a network to both Macs and PCs. I'm currently looking into three options: NAS, WD MyBook Mirror drives attached to a router, or an HP WHS product like the Data Vault. I'm looking for something easy to implement that allows for drive mirroring but also has good performance for both Macs and PCS. I've read that the HP WHS devices rebalance on their own schedules, making them useless for streaming video, and hope someone can definitively confirm or deny this as it's a dealbreaker if true.   I have some php code that runs fine in a browser but now I want to use the same code and execute it from a cron script I'm getting issues. i tried the command on cron wget -O /dev/null http://www.mydomain.com/test.php but if i try that in the terminal i get the error below. What is the correct command to run a php file from cron? and do I need to add extra line of code to the top of my php file? I've been reading a good book (Networking Bible by Sosinki) but I have been finding that there is a lot of "assumed" information contained, where terms/concepts are thrown at the reader without a proper introduction to them. I understand that a "route" is a path through a network. But I am struggling with visualizing some routing-based concepts. Namely: How do routes actually manifest themselves in the hardware? Are they just a list of IP addresses that get computed at the network layer, and then executed by the transport? What kind of data exists in a so-caleld routing table? Is a routing-table just the mechanism for holding these lists of IP address (read above)? What are the performance pros/cons for having a static route, as opposed to a dynamic route?

Nevertheless I still have some unsolved issues: I want to change my keyboard-layout to german but I don´t know where to start since I only have the "basic-DOS" with IO.sys, MSDOS.sys + command.com. I already created Autoexec.bat + config.sys but don´t know which files I need and which I have to change in order to get a german keyboard. • ldirectord refusing connection when nginx redirects from http to https

  I am running ldirector as a load balancer to an nginx front end server. If I setup a redirect from http to https and connect directly to the nginx server, all is well. Connecting via ldirector causes my connection to be refused. I can connect normally via http or https through ldirector when I don't have the redirect in place. To add to my confusion, if my application issues a redirect from http to https, it works. I am testing this via curl on the command line. (curl: (7) couldn't connect to host vs a response) I am using the standard ldirectord config (http://www.ultramonkey.org/3/topologies/config/lb/non-fwmark/linux-director/ldirectord.cf) the http and https parts. • using nmap to guess remote OS and probe service details on a single port only

  I am looking at scanning with nmap a large network in order to identify the OS of devices (-O--osscan-limit) probe for details of a service on a single port (I would have used -sV for all open ports) The problem is that -sV will probe all the ports (which I do not want to do for performance reasons) and I cannot use -p to limit the ports to the one I am interested in as this impacts the OS fingerprinting. I could not find anything in the manual to limit the service probing. Thank you for any ideas (including other approaches outside of nmap, though I would prefer to stick to nmap)

Here is my needs. - 6g/b SATA 3 - USB 3.0 - Cheaper is better - Support for up to 24gb of RAM, I will start out with only 12gb though - I will use 64bit v. of Windows 7 so the 4gb RAM limit should not be a problem from my OS - Should be able to boot even if I have a USB keyboard plugged in. I'm a bit confused as to how to do the redirection bits over ssh: i.e. ssh [email protected] mysqldump $dbname -u admin -p > dbdump.dmp && tar cvzf dbdump.tar.gz dbdump.dmp Issues: 1) I'm not providing the password because I want it to prompt me. Will an ssh remote command deal with this? 2) What's the deal with the syntax? Do I want to use quotations, or don't I? What happens with the redirects and pipes? Do those have to be escaped or formatted in some special fashion.

  I am planning on moving my static files to Google's App Engine. I was wondering if this is a good idea to do. I have read that is it possible that Google will cache your files on multiple locations, which is a good thing in my opinion. The setup should also be quite easy in eclipse with the GAE plugins.
