  • Huge page buffer vs. multiple simultaneous processes

    One of our customer has a 35 Gb database with average active connections count about 70-80. Some tables in database have more than 10M records per table. Now they have bought new server: 4 * 6 Core = 24 Cores CPU, 48 Gb RAM, 2 RAID controllers 256 Mb cache, with 8 SAS 15K HDD on each. 64bit OS. I'm wondering, what would be a fastest configuration: 1) FB 2.5 SuperServer with huge buffer 8192 * 3500000 pages = 29 Gb or 2) FB 2.5 Classic with small buffer of 1000 pages. Maybe some one has tested such case before and will save me days of work :) Thanks in advance.

  • JSF tags not being rendered as HTML

    I'm following the Java EE firstcup tutorial using Netbeans and Glassfish. When I execute the JSF web tier I've been instructed to code, the browser gets the same JSF markup coded in the .xhtml file, and the tags are not rendered as HTML tags. I know this by using the view source code in my browser. For example, for this code: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html"> <h:head> <title>Page title here</title> </h:head> <h:body> <h2> <h:outputText value="#{bundle.WelcomeMessage}" /> </h2> </h:body> </html> The browser should get something like: <html ...> <head> <title>Page title here</title> </head> <body> <h2> the welcome message goes here </h2> </body> </html> Right? Well, my browser is getting jsf code (the first piece of code above) and not the html code (the second piece of code above). It seems to be a configuration problem in netbeans or glassfish but don't know what. Any ideas?   • What's a good way to detect wrap-around in a fixed-width message counter?

    I'm writing a client application to communicate with a server program via UDP. The client periodically makes requests for data and needs to use the most recent server response. The request message has a 16-bit unsigned counter field that is echoed by the server so I can pair requests with server responses. Since it's UDP, I have to handle the case where server responses arrive out of order (or don't arrive at all). Naively, that means holding on to the highest message counter seen so far and dropping any incoming message with a lower number. But that will fail as soon as we pass 65535 messages and the counter wraps back to zero. Is there a good way to detect (with reasonable probability) that, for example, message 5 actually comes after message 65,000? The implementation language is C++.

But what's the usage of the last parameter 'onRequestCompleted'. The Doc says it's the call back function. But, what if I do not want to execute a call back function? In this case, what will be a valid values to the parameter onRequestCompleted?

  • Tool for checking source for dependencies on specific Java versions

    Is there a quick way (e.g. tool) to detect, from the source (or maybe even from compiled classes), which parts of an application call Java API methods that are only implemented in a specific Java version? (e.g. which parts of my app are Java6-specific) I don't necessarily want to hop through all ClassMismatchErrors and avoid the trial-and-error-method. Let's say I only want to document which parts of an application won't work if they were writte for, e.g., Java6 and I want to run it in a version 5 JDK. Is there something like this? Google did not help this time, nor did I find any solution here (a rare case indeed:)

  • Can I show a single country (masked out) in GoogleMaps?

    Hello! Is it possible to mask away neighbor countries in GoogleMap? In my case I just want to show Sweden on one view. On a second view just Norway, Denmark etc etc... I know it is possible to draw polygon lines and fill them accordingly on to Maps API. Problem is that or the result sets get huge or the lines get very rough etc... Would be nice if GoogleMaps could deliver a country at the time without neighbors. Does anyone know about a good coordinate database with country borders? Best best regards, Niclas

  • correct way to turn EAR module into OSGI bundle

    Greetings to all! There is a necessity to turn part of EAR (namely - war) into OSGI bundle and retain it's interoperability. Glassfish 3.0.1 already has osgi-web-container module and I succeeded to deploy standalone OSGI war. But in case of of ex-enterprise war it looks a bit difficult to me. What do I do with EJB calls from inside future OSGI war? Is it enough to replace @EJB injections with true JNDI lookups? What about APIs and libraries shared across EAR? I could split and rearrange them, but still I will have at least one jar needed by both EAR and OSGI war. Duplicate, make it as OSGI-bundle itself and make it available to ear somehow, place it GF domain's library path? Any other ideas, advices which could make that hybrid working? So, here is what I am using: $ perl -e 'require "scrpt.pl"; loadConfigFile(); GetVariable("My Variable")' This works exactly as expected, but I need to read the XML file every time I am getting a variable. Is there a way I could "preserve" $data across shell calls? The idea is that I read the XML file only once. If no, is there is a more simple way I could do this?     I've noticed that MySql has an extensive search capacity, allowing both wildcards and regular expressions. However, I'm in somewhat in a bind since I'm trying to extract multiple values from a single string in my select query. For example, if I had the text "<span>Test</span> this <span>query</span>", perhaps using regular expressions I could find and extract values "Test" or "query", but in my case, I have potentially n such strings to extract. And since I can't define n columns in my select statement, that means I'm stuck. Is there anyway I could have a list of values (ideally separated by commas) of any text contained with span tags? In other words, if I ran this query, I would get "Test,query" as the value of spanlist: select <insert logic here> as spanlist from HtmlPages ...

    In using the m4_ax_python_module.m4 macro in configure.ac (AX_PYTHON_MODULE), one can know at configure time if a given module is installed. It takes two arguments, the module name, and second argument which if not empty, will lead to an exit, useful when the module is a must-have. In the case where you don't want a fatal exit, how do you test in configure.ac which modules were found or not? They output "yes" or "no" when configure is run, but that's all I've found so far. Basically If I have these lines in configure.ac: AX_PYTHON_MODULE(json,[]) AX_PYTHON_MODULE(simplejson,[]) How do I test which of the two modules were found?   • How to avoid automatic renaming of sub signature parameters in visual basic 6.

    In Visual basic 6, i declare a sub like this: Private Sub test1(ByRef XmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub after that, i declare another sub like the following one: Private Sub test2(ByRef xmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub automagically, the first method is transformed in: Private Sub test1(ByVal xmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub so the XmlFooOutput parameter is transformed in xmlFooOutput. This is a pretty dangerous feature because, method like those could be mapped to different XSL presentation files that read XML values through Xpath. So when test1 parameter is renamed, XSL bound to test1 method goes broken because Xpath point to XmlFooOuput but the correct value is now in xmlFooOutput. Is it possible to remove this weird feature? I'm using microsoft visual basic 6.0 (SP6). What are the disadvantages? **For my particular case I am using Apache CXF, I'm not sure what other libraries allow "dynamic" clients. -I thought I didn't need to add this, but...   • Prevent unauthorised write access to a part of filesystem or partition

    Hello all I have some very important system files which I want to protect from accidental deletion even by root user. I can create a new partition for that and mount it with readonly access but the problem is that I want my application which handles those system files to have write access to that part and be able to modify them. Is that possible using VFS? As VFS handles access to the files I could have a module inserted in the VFS layer which can see if there is a write access to that part then see the authorization and allow it or otherwise reject it. If not please provide me suggestions regarding how can such a system be implemented what would I need in that case. If there exists a system like this please suggest about them also. I am using linux and want to implement this in C, I think it would be possible in C only. Edit: There are such kind of programs implemented in windows which can restrict access to administrator even, to some important folders, would that be possible in linux?

  • Using IF in T-SQL weakens or breaks execution plan caching?

    It has been suggest to me that the use of IF statements in t-SQL batches is detrimental to performance. I'm trying to find some confirmation of this assertion. I'm using SQL Server 2005 and 2008. The assertion is that with the following batch:- IF @parameter = 0 BEGIN SELECT ... something END ELSE BEGIN SELECT ... something else END SQL Server cannot re-use the execution plan generated because the next execution may need a different branch. This implies that SQL Server will eliminate one branch entirely from execution plan on the basis that for the current execution it can already determine which branch is needed. Is this really true? In addition what happens in this case:- IF EXISTS (SELECT ....) BEGIN SELECT ... something END ELSE BEGIN SELECT ... something else END where it's not possible to determine in advance which branch will be executed?

  • How to filter Delphi 2010 compiler output (hints)?

    I'm trying to get rid of some hints(*) the Delphi compiler emits. Browsing through the ToolsAPI I see a IOTAToolsFilter that looks like it might help me accomplish this through it's Notifier, but I'm not sure how to invoke this (through what xxxServices I can access the filter). Can anyone tell me if I´m on the right track here? Thanks! (*) In particular, H2365 about overridden methods not matching the case of the parent. Not so nice when you have about 5 million lines of active code with a slightly different code convention than Embarcadero's. We've been working without hints for months now, and we kinda miss 'm. :-)

  • Problem with notification bar in fullscreen app

    I run an app in fullscreen mode where fullscreen is defined as a theme in xml for the entire app. <style name="AskTingTingTheme" parent="android:Theme"> <item name="android:windowNoTitle">true</item> <item name="android:windowFullscreen">true</item> <item name="android:windowBackground">@null</item> </style> Generally it works ok, but there are some issues in some cases: 1) when I open the search dialog via search button - Screenshot: http://tinyurl.com/3xzadft 2) when I open spinner widgets that are very long and fill the screen (so that the list is usually scrollable) - Screenshot: http://tinyurl.com/39q5ya2 The problem is that when I open the search dialog or spinner widget, the system notification bar occurs for a few millisecs and then scrolls off the screen again. Please see the screenshots linked above. I'm currently on 2.2 with NexusOne, but same thing happened on 2.1update1 (esp. case 2) as well before.

  • TToolButton Height Grows with Style = tbsDropdown

    I noticed that the height of a TToolButton increases when you set the button's Style to tbsDropdown. I can understand the width increasing, so the button has space to draw the down arrow, but I'm not sure a height increase is necessary. Steps to reproduce the issue (Delphi 2010, Windows 7 x64): Add TToolbar to a form, ShowCaptions=True Right click to add a button to the Toolbar Set button Style=tbsDropDown and notice the button grows in height The same height increase happens when there are images assigned to the toolbar, in which case there is already plenty more vertical space available in the button to draw the drop down. Here's a visual example: Is there a workaround for this without hacking the VCL, or is this hardcoded into the Windows control?

    Hi, I cannot initialize a non-const reference to type T1 from a convertible type T2. However, I can with a const reference. long l; const long long &const_ref = l; // fine long long &ref = l; // error: invalid initialization of reference of // type 'long long int&' from expression of type // 'long int' Most problems I encountered were related to r-values that cannot be assigned to a non-const reference. This is not the case here -- can someone explain? Thanks.

    Hi, Because of a strange C++ warning about the visibility of some symbols and an interesting answer, linking to a paper which describes the different visibility types and cases (section 2.2.4 is about C++ classes), I started to wonder if it is needed for a standalone application to export symbols at all (except main - or is that needed?). Why exactly are they needed to be exported in standalone applications? Is "an exported symbol" an synomym for "visible symbol"? I.e. a hidden symbol is a symbol which is not exported? Do the object files already differ between visible symbols and hidden symbols? Or is this made at the linking step, so that only the visible symbols are exported? Does the visibility of symbols matter in case for debug information? Or is that completely independent, i.e. I would also get a nice backtrace if I have all symbols hidden? How is STABS/DWARF related to the visibility of symbols?

  • Retrieve Storage and Programs Memory on .NET Compact Framework 2 and WM5

    Hi! I've been looking for quite a while already and still couldn't find a solution for this. All I need is to retrieve the memory levels and percentage of use. OpenNETCF has a MemoryManagement class, which seems to encapsulates a data structure returned through a P/Invoke or something like that, and it gives me the TotalPhysicalMemory, TotalVirtualMemory, AvailablePhisicalMemory and such, but those do not directly relate to Storage and Programs, nor could I find a way to "convert" these attributes to those I need. Has anyone there already done this? It must be easy, I just need the very same values available on Settings System Memory. Thanks in advance! edit: I'm already being able to retrieve Available and total Storage memory through the GetDiskFreeSpaceEx P/Invoke. Since Storage and Programs memory seem to rely into the same hardware, maybe it's just a case of finding out what path to pass as the method's first parameter.

  • Relvance of 'public' contructor in abstract class.

    Is there any relevance of a 'public' constructor in an abstract class? I can not think of any possible way to use it, in that case shouldn't it be treated as error by compiler (C#, not sure if other languages allow that). Sample Code: internal abstract class Vehicle { public Vehicle() { } } The C# compiler allows this code to compile, while there is no way i can call this contructor from the outside world. It can be called from derived classes only. So shouldn't it allow 'protected' and 'private' modifiers only. Please comment.

Basically I want to see the people booking online, and see how and where they got me... and hoping there's a better and more elegant way than to have a field that asks "What did you type into Google to find us?"

  • C# property in a form class only accessable after formload event

    using vs2008, c# Howdy, Im instantiating and calling Form B from Form A. FormB has some custom properties, to allow me to pass it things like sqlAdaptors and dataset instances. When i instantiate and show Form B from Form A as a dialog form with a Using statement, it all works fine, but i find the properties i pass are not available in Form B until after the form_load event has fired. I was under the impression the properties when passed to a instantiated class should be available from a constructor, but this is not the case. If it try to access the properties before the form load event i get a null reference exception. Is this correct behavior ? It is very annoying. thanks for any help
