• Changed url from non www to www...Google Indexing

  I have recently changed (about 1 week ago) my url from non www version to www version. I told my hosting company to do this and they did it successfully all my urls are directed to www version. But google is indexing my non www version on the search results. I have updated new content on my website and google indexes that content with the changed url i.e with prefix www but the mainpage i.e the site name is still shown without www and its not updated. I have checked that my www.sitename.com is listed on google but not shown when I type www.sitename.com. So how much time does it take to remove the old urls from indexing and updating into new urls ??????

• Contact YouTube

  Is there any direct way do contact a „real” person, an YouTube employer? Someone created an account for the company I work for (previous employer). She entered some password and e-mail. The provided e-mail was valid, but since last login (more than two years), we changed our domain, and this e-mail is probably not valid anymore (and we even don't know it), co we can't use option to reset password. I have used all the options in YouTube help center, and no one worked. Also we can't contact this previous employer to get any data she entered in the registration form. The only data I know is the username. All the movies present the products of our company, there are links to our site in movie descriptions, so there should be no problem to prove that the account is ours. This is an urgent case, becouse the movies contain outdated information.

• Potential issues with multiple home pages

  I have a site where I want to have two different home pages: a general description page for anonymous users, and a dashboard page for logged-in users. I am debating between two implementations: Both pages live at / The page for anonymous users is located at / and the dashboard is at /dashboard, with automatic redirection between them based on whether a given user is logged in (e.g., if you're logged in and navigate to /, you are redirected to /dashboard. Is it cleaner to have both pages use the same URL or separate URLs? Also, I imagine that choices for that question will affect the following: Caching: the anonymous page would be completely cached, while the logged-in page would not be cached at all (except for static resources). This could lead to issues with server caching, request speed, and UX (such as if one version of the page is cached in a user's browser when the other version should be displayed, instead). SEO: how would search engines react to such canonical URLs? Load time (due to redirects or to the server having to always reevaluate which page to display)

• Is it good to buy multiple domains for competitive reasons?

  I am attempting to convince the higher ups at my company that spending $55 to renew one domain for a year is bad when they end up having 3-4 domains names for one website. They're reasoning for doing so is to keep these domains names out of the hands of the competition. For example, the company name is Pie Consulting & Engineering. They want to buy up pieforensicconsulting.com to keep it out of the hands of a competitor (we also do forensic engineering). Could a competitor use that domain in any kind of diabolical way? I mean I figure if someone is typing in pieforensiconsulting into the url field, they know what they're looking for and if it redirects to another company, they're not just going to stay on the site.

• Google: What does a return to PR 'Unranked' mean?

  One of my sites is very new (about 3 months). When first launched it's pages had (unsurprisingly) a Google PR of 'Unranked' [From Google toolbar stats, via the firefox SearchStatus plugin]. After a few weeks these changed to PR0. Just recently I noticed that they are showing PR 'Unranked' once more in Google Toolbar. As far as I know I'm following the Google guidelines. Results for the site still seem to be showing for its keywords. What could this mean?

• LibreOffice english spelling dictionary missing

  I've got two machines, same OS (Ubuntu 11.10 x86_64), same LibreOffice ppa's (ppa:libreoffice/ppa). One has the "English spelling dictionaries, hyphenation rules, thesaurus..." extension in the extension manager, the other doesn't. Each upgraded using the ppa from 3.5.0 to 3.5.1. Can anyone provide some insight as to how to get this extension onto the second machine? I can remove LibreOffice from the second machine and install the packages from the LibreOffice site, but would prefer to keep the ppa - as I don't then need to remember to upgrade.

  I cannot help but think that this is currently wrong.  There are two editions of StreamInsight (SI), Premium and Standard.  A link to their differences is here Points to note Developer Edition and Evaluation Edition represent Enterprise Edition in SQL Server but not SI where they represent Datacentre Edition.  Won’t this be confusing when people evaluating SI find that it is not the same animal when they move to Enterprise Edition? If SI Premium is the only thing you want out of the SQL Server box then it is going to be a high cost. The latency rates as well quoted on the site above make Premium Edition essential if you are going to be using this to do Real-Time analytics.

So, for example, this might appear on my page: <a href="/some/page">some page</a> The JavaScript then prevents the default action (following the link), and instead renders a view (using a different api, such as /getjson?some_page). $('[href]').click(function(){ history.pushState(...); handleURL(...); }); Assume my server will respond to requests at /some/page with a pre-rendered version. My questions are: will Googlebot receive the prerendered version, or allow JavaScript to instead invoke pushState, etc. if it doesn't make the direct request, will it wait for AJAX content to be loaded? does Googlebot implement pushState, so it will show the proper URL in search results?

• How to set-up a simple subversion workflow

I am new to subversion (and programming) so I have been reading the official PDF documentations but still not sure about how to set-up my repository. I am working mainly with python, bash and rsl (Renderman Shading Language) So I already have a /dev structure on my disk as this: http://imageshack.us/f/708/devstructure.png/ And I have a /site structure that links to my /dev folder: http://imageshack.us/f/651/sitestructure.png/ So obviously starting to use SVN will change this approach that I already have in place. The question is when I am setting-up my SVN repository for the work I do in my /dev folder: Will I set-up a separate repository for each different programming platform? and Where exactly I should be placing my repository? • Which languages are more conducive to telecommuting, and also less concerned with pairing?

  I don't know that it may even make a difference, and I reckon if it did the differences would be cultural rather than technical, but if one were going to set out today (2011) to learn a language, and specifically wanted to telecommute (so they could live in two different places during the year), are there any languages whose culture looks more favorably upon telecommuting than other languages / cultures? For example, I get the impression (and I am probably completely wrong) that in the Ruby community, you are more likely to be expected to be on-site and doing pair programming (though I suppose you can do pairing remotely too). As a corollary question, are there languages / communities where pair programming is less important, for people who wanted to program in part because they aren't social butterflies?

I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them. • Does using structure data semantic LocalBusiness schema markup work for local EMD URL's?

  Based on what I have read about Google's recent Panda and Penguin updates, I'm getting the impression that using semantic markup may help improve SEO results. On a EMD (exact match domain) site, that may have been hit, we list location-based products. We are now going to be adding a itemtype="http://schema.org/Product" to each product, with relevant details. However, that product may be available in Los Angeles and also in appear in a Seattle results page. We could add a LocalBusiness item type on each geo page to define the geo location for that page. While the definition states: A particular physical business or branch of an organization. Examples of LocalBusiness include a restaurant, a particular branch of a restaurant chain, a branch of a bank, a medical practice, a club, a bowling alley, etc. We could add use the location property which would simply include the city/state details. I realize that this looks like it is meant for a physical location, however could this be done without seeming black-hat?

• Constructive criticism for my bounce rate being so high [closed]

  The bounce rate on my website's product pages is 80%, which is terrible. Could you offer any opinions on whether you consider the user experience to be bad, and how I could possibly improve it? Other pages, such as the home and category pages, have acceptable bounce rates, but the vast majority of my traffic lands on the product pages. I already tried removing some Google ads for a couple of days, but this didn't seem to help at all. I'm working on doing A/B testing at the moment. (It's tricky, as the site is based on a CMS - I custom coded the [Joomla] component, so hopefully I can get this testing working.)

• Fonts totally unreadable

  I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and my fonts are all just small rectangles with nothing in them. They are completely unreadable. EVEN THE FONTS IN THE TERMINAL. Thank god the fonts in my Chromium were ok, because I wouldn't be able to find this site or write this message. So far I've tried to use the Appearance - Font thing and it doesn't work. For some reason there was an error with the fonts during the installation. Please help, this is an utter nightmare...

Despite my fairly positive experience, I somehow get the feeling that computer science in the business world will be completely different than do-it-for-fun game making. Since I'm interested in the field and I'd like to study well, I want to prepare myself for the onslaught.   I keep seeing people wanting to do this (or something very similar) and then being surprised at how much it might cost them if they went with Windows Azure. Time for a Q&A. Short answer: No, definitely not. Madness, sheer madness. (Hopefully that was clear enough) Longer answer: No because It would cost you a heck of a lot more than just about any other approach to running a blog. A site that can easily be run on a shared hosting solution (as many blogs do today) does not require the rich capabilities of Windows Azure. Capabilities such as simplified deployed and management, dedicated resources, elastic resources, “unlimited” storage etc. It is simply not the type of application the Windows Azure Platform has been designed for. • Download/submission directories are dead? Are they good for SEO?

In the past if you wanted visibility you would create a standardized pad file and you would submit it to hundreds of directories or you used web service that would do that for you. These directories would then serve as first incoming links to your web site. How about today? I think download directories are pretty much dead? Do you think this is still good SEO approach today? • Is the wireless driver from Live USB different from the standard install?

  Linux newbie here. I've been trying to use Ubuntu (x64) as my main OS since 11.10, but my wireless connection on it has been very unstable, droping every other 5-10 mins. For this reason I see myself forced to use Windows 7 (dual booting), where connection works flawlessly -- which really bothers me. My card is an Atheros 9k, which claims a reasonable amount of wireless complaints on Ubuntu forums. I've tried every suggestion given on past questions to this site but to no avail. However, while running Ubuntu Live USB for some of the tests, I noticed that my wireless connection never failed on it and wondered if its network configuration differs from the one on the default Ubuntu install. If this is the case, how could I reproduce the Live USB network environment on my hard drive install?
