  • I can't add PPA repository behind the proxy (with @ in the username)

    - by kenorb
    I'm trying to add the ppa repository (as a root) with the following command: export HTTP_PROXY="http://[email protected]:[email protected]:8080" add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/add-apt-repository", line 125, in <module> ppa_info = get_ppa_info_from_lp(user, ppa_name) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/softwareproperties/ppa.py", line 84, in get_ppa_info_from_lp curl.perform() pycurl.error: (56, 'Received HTTP code 407 from proxy after CONNECT') Unfortunately it doesn't work. Looks like curl is connecting to the proxy, but the proxy says that Authentication is Required. I've tried with .curlrc, http_proxy env instead, but it doesn't work. strace -e network,write -s1000 add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 socket(PF_INET6, SOCK_DGRAM, IPPROTO_IP) = 4 socket(PF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_TCP) = 4 connect(4, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(8080), sin_addr=inet_addr("165.x.x.232")}, 16) = -1 EINPROGRESS (Operation now in progress) getsockopt(4, SOL_SOCKET, SO_ERROR, [0], [4]) = 0 getpeername(4, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(8080), sin_addr=inet_addr("165.x.x.232")}, [16]) = 0 getsockname(4, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(46025), sin_addr=inet_addr("161.20.75.220")}, [16]) = 0 sendto(4, "CONNECT launchpad.net:443 HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: launchpad.net:443\r\nUser-Agent: PycURL/7.22.0\r\nProxy-Connection: Keep-Alive\r\nAccept: application/json\r\n\r\n", 146, MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0) = 146 recvfrom(4, "HTTP/1.1 407 Proxy Authentication Required\r\nProxy-Authenticate: BASIC realm=\"proxy\"\r\nCache-Control: no-cache\r\nPragma: no-cache\r\nContent-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8\r\nProxy-Connection: close\r\nSet-Cookie: BCSI-CS-91b9906520151dad=2; Path=/\r\nConnection: close\ Maybe it's because there is @ sign in the username?   • Why am I getting this "Connection to PulseAudio failed" error?

    - by Dave M G
I have a computer that runs Mythbuntu 11.10. It has an external USB Kenwood Digital Audio device. When I open up pavucontrol, I get this message: If I do as the message suggests and run start-pulseaudio-x11, I get this output: $ start-pulseaudio-x11 Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused How do I correct this error? Update: Somewhere during the course of doing the suggested tests in the comments, a new audio device has now become visible in my sound settings. I have not attached or made any new device, so this must be the result of of some setting change. The device I use and know about is the Kenwood Audio device. The "GF108" device will play sound through the Kenwood anyway, but not reliably: Command line output as requested in the comments: $ ls -l ~/.pulse* -rw------- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 256 Feb 28 2011 /home/mythbuntu/.pulse-cookie /home/mythbuntu/.pulse: total 200 -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 8192 Oct 23 01:38 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-card-database.tdb -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 69 Nov 16 22:51 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-default-sink -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 68 Nov 16 22:51 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-default-source -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 49152 Oct 14 12:30 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-device-manager.tdb -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 61440 Oct 23 01:40 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-device-volumes.tdb lrwxrwxrwx 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 23 Nov 16 22:50 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-runtime -> /tmp/pulse-EAwvLIQZn7e8 -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 77824 Nov 1 12:54 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-stream-volumes.tdb And yet more requested command line output: $ ps auxw|grep pulse 1000 2266 0.5 0.2 294184 9152 ? • Why is my Internet connection randomly dropping?

    - by Jeanno
Ever since I have installed 12.04 (clean install not an upgrade), i have been having a drop in the Internet connection. The drop in the connection can be anything from 15 seconds to about 3 mins, and then the connection comes back. This behaviour happens while I am actively browsing the Internet, or if I wake up the computer and open Firefox (sometimes I have connection and sometimes I don't) . Please note that when the internet connection is on, it is not slow (as speedtest.net results show) In the beginning, I thought it was a problem with the driver r8169 for my RTL8111/8168B Ethernet card, so I downloaded the r8168 from Realtek website, followed the detailed instructions (blacklisted r8169, changed the file to '.bsh' ...), but still the same problem persisted. So I switched to a wireless connection, and I got the same problem with internet connection dropping randomly. Any ideas? • How to get tilemap transparency color working with TiledLib's Demo implementation?

    - by Adam LaBranche
So the problem I'm having is that when using Nick Gravelyn's tiledlib pipeline for reading and drawing tmx maps in XNA, the transparency color I set in Tiled's editor will work in the editor, but when I draw it the color that's supposed to become transparent still draws. The closest things to a solution that I've found are - 1) Change my sprite batch's BlendState to NonPremultiplied (found this in a buried Tweet). 2) Get the pixels that are supposed to be transparent at some point then Set them all to transparent. Solution 1 didn't work for me, and solution 2 seems hacky and not a very good way to approach this particular problem, especially since it looks like the custom pipeline processor reads in the transparent color and sets it to the color key for transparency according to the code, just something is going wrong somewhere. At least that's what it looks like the code is doing. TileSetContent.cs if (imageNode.Attributes["trans"] != null) { string color = imageNode.Attributes["trans"].Value; string r = color.Substring(0, 2); string g = color.Substring(2, 2); string b = color.Substring(4, 2); this.ColorKey = new Color((byte)Convert.ToInt32(r, 16), (byte)Convert.ToInt32(g, 16), (byte)Convert.ToInt32(b, 16)); } ... TiledHelpers.cs // build the asset as an external reference OpaqueDataDictionary data = new OpaqueDataDictionary(); data.Add("GenerateMipMaps", false); data.Add("ResizetoPowerOfTwo", false); data.Add("TextureFormat", TextureProcessorOutputFormat.Color); data.Add("ColorKeyEnabled", tileSet.ColorKey.HasValue); data.Add("ColorKeyColor", tileSet.ColorKey.HasValue ? tileSet.ColorKey.Value : Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Color.Magenta); tileSet.Texture = context.BuildAsset<Texture2DContent, Texture2DContent>( new ExternalReference<Texture2DContent>(path), null, data, null, asset); ... I can share more code as well if it helps to understand my problem. Thank you.

  • Oracle at Information Security and Risk Management Conference (ISACA Conferences)

    - by Tanu Sood
The North America Information Security and Risk Management (ISRM) Conference hosted by ISACA will be held this year from November 14 - 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada and Oracle is a platinum sponsor. The ISRM / IT GRC event is not only designed to meet the exact needs of information security, governance, compliance and risk management professionals like you, but also gives you the tools you need to solve the issues you currently face. The event builds on and includes the key elements of information security, governance, compliance and risk management practices, and offers a fresh perspective on current and future trends. As a Platinum Sponsor Oracle will not only have an opportunity to demonstrate but talk through our strategic roadmap and support to ensure all organizations understand our key role within the industry to ensure corporate data and information remains safe. Join us at the Lunch and Learn to learn more about the latest advances in Oracle Identity Management. Lunch and Learn Session: Trends in Identity Management Speaker: Mike Neuenschwander, Senior Product Development Director, Oracle Identity Management As enterprises embrace mobile and social applications, security and audit have moved into the foreground. The way we work and connect with our customers is changing dramatically and this means, re-thinking how we secure the interaction and enable the experience. Work is an activity not a place - mobile access enables employees to work from any device anywhere and anytime. Organizations are utilizing "flash teams" - instead of a dedicated group to solve problems, organizations utilize more cross-functional teams. Work is now social - email collaboration will be replaced by dynamic social media style interaction. In this session, we will examine these three secular trends and discuss how organizations can secure the work experience and adapt audit controls to address the "new work order". We also recommend you bookmark the following session: T1 Session 301: Gone in 60 Seconds: Mitigating Database Security Risk Friday, November 16, 8:30 am – 9:30 am And, do be sure to stop by our booth, # 100 & #102, to not only network with our Product Development Team, but also get an onsite demonstration of Oracle Security Solutions. See you there? ISRM /  IT GRC November 14 – 16, 2012 Mirage Casino-Hotel 3400 Las Vegas Boulevard South Las Vegas, NV, 89109

    I use an Acer Aspire 5930G, dual booted with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10. My problem is that i cannot establish wired connection on my ubuntu. Wireless connection works in both of my OSs but the Wired connection does not, only on the Ubuntu. I have already tried the common fix: echo on | sudo tee /sys/class/net/eth0/device/power/control but without any results. Any ideas? eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1d:72:c2:21:a5 inet6 addr: fe80::21d:72ff:fec2:21a5/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:945 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:204318 (204.3 KB) Interrupt:16 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:7241 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:7241 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:645874 (645.8 KB) TX bytes:645874 (645.8 KB) wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:ea:57:7b:cc inet addr:192.168.2.2 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::216:eaff:fe57:7bcc/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:19937 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:16933 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:10877245 (10.8 MB) TX bytes:3131378 (3.1 MB) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 16)

  • Install tmux on Mac OS X

    - by unixben
This is a short run down on how to get tmux running on your Mac OS X system. The same methodology applies when compiling this on Solaris. What is tmux? According to the developer's page, "tmux is a terminal multiplexer: it enables a number of terminals (or windows), each running a separate program, to be created, accessed, and controlled from a single screen. tmux may be detached from a screen and continue running in the background, then later reattached". Why not just use screen? For me, the primary reason I switched to tmux from screen is the much easier configuration syntax that tmux offers. If you've ever struggled with formatting screen's caption or hardstatus line, then you will appreciate the ease with which you can achieve the same results in tmux. Preparing your environment You will need a C compiler installed. I believe that OS X ships by default with GNU make, but if not, then you will need to obtain it or use Xcode. Download the sources While I'm putting all this together, I like to keep everything neatly tucked away in a build directory. mkdir ~/build cd ~/build curl -OL http://downloads.sourceforge.net/tmux/tmux-1.5.tar.gz curl -OL http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/levent/libevent/libevent-2.0/libevent-2.0.16-stable.tar.gz Unpack the sources tar xzf tmux-1.5.tar.gz tar xzf libevent-2.0.16-stable.tar.gz Compiling libevent cd libevent-2.0.16-stable ./configure --prefix=/opt make sudo make install Compiling tmux cd ../tmux-1.5 LDFLAGS="-L/opt/lib" CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/include" LIBS="-lresolv" ./configure --prefix=/opt make sudo make install That's all there is to it!

  • Javascript Isometric draw optimization

    - by hustlerinc
I'm having trouble with isometric tiles drawing. At the moment I got an array with the tiles i want to draw. And it all works fine until i increase the size of the array. Since I draw ALL tiles on the map it really affects the game performance (obviously) :D. My problem is I'm no genius when it comes to javascript and I haven't managed to just draw what is in viewport. Should be fairly simple for an expert though because its fixed sizes etc. Canvas is 960x480 pixels, each tile 64x32. This gives 16 tiles on first row, 15 on the next etc. for a total of 16 rows. Tile 0,0 is in the top-right corner. And draws X up to down and Y right to left. Going through the tiles on the first row from left to right as +X -Y. Here is the relevant part of my drawMap() function drawMap(){ var tileW = 64; // Tile Width var tileH = 32; // Tile Height var mapX = 960-32; var mapY = -16; for(i=0;i<map.length;i++){ for(j=0;j<map[i].length;j++){ var drawTile = map[i][j]; var drawObj = objectMap[i][j]; var xpos = (i-j)*tileH + mapX; var ypos = (i+j)*tileH/2 + mapY; // Place the tiles isometric. ctx.drawImage(tileImg[drawTile],xpos, ypos); if(drawObj){ ctx.drawImage(objectImg[drawObj-1],xpos,ypos-(objectImg[drawObj- 1])); } } } } Could anyone please help me how to translate this to just draw the relevant tiles? It would be deeply appreciated.

  • Ubuntu update deleted entries from grub

    - by Kevin
My computer currently has Fedora, Ubuntu, and Windows installed. I just updated Ubuntu 12.04, and on restarting, the Fedora entry was gone from GRUB. Ubuntu and Windows remained, though. I have looked at these threads: Fedora login gone after Ubuntu updates on a dual boot http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=279221 GRUB's menu.lst deleted after a kernel update However, I cannot figure out how to mount the drive as suggested. It does not appear in the list on the left side of nautilus as shown in the links above. I also tried running the following as suggested above: sudo grub-install /dev/sdX sudo update-grub But this gave scary errors: /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk or to a partition. This is a BAD idea.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists. The highlighted drive below is where Fedora lives. Thanks for any help reversing Ubuntu's decision to delete this from GRUB.

  • How can I replicate the look and limitations of the Super NES?

    - by Mikalichov
I am looking to produce graphics with the same limitations / look that in the Super Nes era. I am specifically looking for graphics similar to Chrono Trigger / FF6. It would be a lot easier to do if I had an idea of the resolution / dpi I am supposed to use. I found that the technical specs for the SNES are: Progressive: 256 × 224, 512 × 224, 256 × 239, 512 × 239 Interlaced: 512 × 448, 512 × 478 But even by using these resolutions, it is pointless if I set it at 72dpi, as I will still have possibly very detailed graphics (that is the main thing, I don't want detailed graphics, I want to go pixelated). I figured it might be related to the sprite size limit, i.e.: Sprites can be 8 × 8, 16 × 16, 32 × 32, or 64 × 64 pixels, each using one of eight 16-color palettes and tiles from one of two blocks of 256 in VRAM. Up to 32 sprites and 34 8 × 8 sprite tiles may appear on any one line. This would work for sprites (characters, objects), but what about maps? Are they built entirely from 8x8 tiles? And then, at what resolution is the end result displayed? It might seem like I am giving the question and answers at the same time, but all of these are suppositions I am making, so could someone confirm or correct them?

  • Tried to install some software, it says some packages are damaged, cannot fix them

    - by lempira
So, I go to the Ubuntu Software Center, as soon as it opens, a window pops up with the following text: "Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired. Do you want to repair it now?" Then I click the "Repair" button, then a new window pops up with the following text: "Package operation failed. The installation or removal of a software package failed." Then I click on the "Details" button, which returns me the following text: installArchives() failed: Can't exec "locale": No such file or directory at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Encoding.pm line 16. • Deploying InfoPath forms &ndash; idiosyncrasies

    - by PointsToShare
Well, I have written a sophisticated PowerShell script to expedite the deployment of InfoPath forms - .XSN file.  Along the way by way of trial and error (mostly error and error), I discovered a few little things. Here they are. •    Regardless of how the install command is run – PowerShell or the GUI in Central Admin – SharePoint enwraps the XSN inside a solution – WSP, then installs and deploys the solution. •    The solution is named by concatenating “form-“ with the first 16 characters (or less if the file name is shorter than 16) of the file name and the required WSP at the end. So if the form name was MyInfopathForm.xsn the solution name will be form-MyInfopathForm.wsp, but for WithdrawalOfRequestsForRefund.xsn it will be named form-WithdrawalOfRequ.wsp •    It only gets worse! Had there already been a solution file with the same name, Microsoft appends a three digit number to the name, like MyInfopathForm-123.wsp. Remember a digit is a finger, I suspect a middle finger, so when you deploy the same form – many versions of it, or as it was in my case – testing a script time and again, you’ll end up with many such digit (middle finger) appended solutions, all un-deployed except the last one. This is not a bug. It’s a feature!   Well, there are ways around it. When by hand, remove the solution from the solution store before deploying the form again. In the script I do the same thing. And finally - an important caveat; Make sure that all your form names are unique in the first 16 characters. If you also have a form with the name forWithdrawalOfRequestForRelief.xsn, you’re in trouble! That’s all folks!

  • Spritegroups and colorkeys

    - by Fristi
I have a problem using spritegroups in pygame. In my situation I have 2 spritegroups, one for humans, one for "infected". A human is represented by a blue circle: image = pygame.Surface((32,32)) image.fill((255,255,255)) pygame.draw.circle(image,(0,0,255),(16,16),16) image = image.convert() image.set_colorkey((255,255,255)) An infected by a red one (same code, different color). I update my spritegroups as follows: self.humans.clear(self.screen, self.bg) self.humans.update(time_passed) self.humans.draw(self.screen) self.infected.clear(self.screen, self.bg) self.infected.update(time_passed) self.infected.draw(self.screen) Self.bg is defined: self.bg = pygame.Surface((SCREEN_WIDTH, SCREEN_HEIGHT)) self.bg.fill((255,255,255)) self.bg.convert() This all works, except that when a red circle overlaps with a blue one, you can see the white corners of the bounding box around the actual circle. Within a spritegroup it works, using the set_colorkey function. This does not happen with overlapping blue circles or overlapping red circles. I tried adding a colorkey to self.bg but that did not work. Same for adding a colorkey to self.screen.

  • What does the Sys_PageIn() function do in Quake?

    - by Philip
I've noticed in the initialization process of the original Quake the following function is called. volatile int sys_checksum; // **lots of code** void Sys_PageIn(void *ptr, int size) { byte *x; int j,m,n; //touch all memory to make sure its there. The 16-page skip is to //keep Win 95 from thinking we're trying to page ourselves in (we are //doing that, of course, but there's no reason we shouldn't) x = (byte *)ptr; for (n=0 ; n<4 ; n++) { for (m=0; m<(size - 16 * 0x1000) ; m += 4) { sys_checksum += *(int *)&x[m]; sys_checksum += *(int *)&x[m + 16 * 0x10000]; } } } I think I'm just not familiar enough with paging to understand this function. the void* ptr passed to the function is a recently malloc()'d piece of memory that is size bytes big. This is the whole function - j is an unreferenced variable. My best guess is that the volatile int sys_checksum is forcing the system to physically read all of the space that was just malloc()'d, perhaps to ensure that these spaces exist in virtual memory? Is this right? And why would someone do this? Is it for some antiquated Win95 reason?

  • Delete Nodes + attributes that match Xpath except specific attributes

    - by Ryan Ternier
I'm trying to find the best (efficient) way of doing this. I have a medium sized XML document. Depending on specific settings certain portions of it need to be filtered out for security reasons. I'll be doing this in XSLT as it's configurable and no code should need changing. I've looked around, but not getting much luck on it. For example: I have the following XPath: //*[@root='2.16.840.1.113883.3.51.1.1.6.1'] Whicrooth gives me all nodes with a root attribute equal to a specific OID. In these nodes I want to have all attributes except for a few (ex. foo and bar) erased, and then having another attribute added (ex. reason) I also need to have multiple XPath expressions that can be ran to zero down on a specific node and clear it's contents out in a similar fashion, with respect to nodes with specific attributes. I'm playing around with information from: XPath expression to select all XML child nodes except a specific list? and XSLT Remove Elements and/or Attributes by Name per XSL Parameters Will update shortly when I can have access what what I"ve done so far. Example: XML Before Transformation <root> <childNode> <innerChild root="2.16.840.1.113883.3.51.1.1.6.1" a="b" b="c" type="innerChildness"/> <innerChildSibling/> </childNode> <animals> <cat> <name>bob</name> </cat> </animals> <tree/> <water root="2.16.840.1.113883.3.51.1.1.6.1" z="zed" l="ell" type="liquidLIke"/> </root> After <root> <childNode> <innerChild root="2.16.840.1.113883.3.51.1.1.6.1" flavor="MSK"/> <!-- filtered --> <innerChildSibling/> </childNode> <animals> <cat flavor="MSK" /> <!-- cat was filtered --> </animals> <tree/> <water root="2.16.840.1.113883.3.51.1.1.6.1" flavor="MSK"/> <!-- filtered --> </root>

  • Steganography Experiment - Trouble hiding message bits in DCT coefficients

    - by JohnHankinson
I have an application requiring me to be able to embed loss-less data into an image. As such I've been experimenting with steganography, specifically via modification of DCT coefficients as the method I select, apart from being loss-less must also be relatively resilient against format conversion, scaling/DSP etc. From the research I've done thus far this method seems to be the best candidate. I've seen a number of papers on the subject which all seem to neglect specific details (some neglect to mention modification of 0 coefficients, or modification of AC coefficient etc). After combining the findings and making a few modifications of my own which include: 1) Using a more quantized version of the DCT matrix to ensure we only modify coefficients that would still be present should the image be JPEG'ed further or processed (I'm using this in place of simply following a zig-zag pattern). 2) I'm modifying bit 4 instead of the LSB and then based on what the original bit value was adjusting the lower bits to minimize the difference. 3) I'm only modifying the blue channel as it should be the least visible. This process must modify the actual image and not the DCT values stored in file (like jsteg) as there is no guarantee the file will be a JPEG, it may also be opened and re-saved at a later stage in a different format. For added robustness I've included the message multiple times and use the bits that occur most often, I had considered using a QR code as the message data or simply applying the reed-solomon error correction, but for this simple application and given that the "message" in question is usually going to be between 10-32 bytes I have plenty of room to repeat it which should provide sufficient redundancy to recover the true bits. No matter what I do I don't seem to be able to recover the bits at the decode stage. I've tried including / excluding various checks (even if it degrades image quality for the time being). I've tried using fixed point vs. double arithmetic, moving the bit to encode, I suspect that the message bits are being lost during the IDCT back to image. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to get this working would be hugely appreciated. (PS I am aware that the actual DCT/IDCT could be optimized from it's naive On4 operation using row column algorithm, or an FDCT like AAN, but for now it just needs to work :) ) Reference Papers: http://www.lokminglui.com/dct.pdf http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1006/1006.1186.pdf Code for the Encode/Decode process in C# below: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Drawing.Imaging; using System.Drawing; namespace ImageKey { public class Encoder { public const int HIDE_BIT_POS = 3; // use bit position 4 (1 << 3). public const int HIDE_COUNT = 16; // Number of times to repeat the message to avoid error. // JPEG Standard Quantization Matrix. // (to get higher quality multiply by (100-quality)/50 .. // for lower than 50 multiply by 50/quality. However to get the message to come through without corruption I have to adjust both coefficients as well as swap them. For example swapping (3,4) and (4,3) in the DCT matrix and then respectively adding 8 and subtracting 8 as an arbitrary constant seems to work. This survives a re-JPEG'ing of 96 but any form of scaling/cropping destroys the message again. I was hoping that by operating on mid to low frequency values that the message would be preserved even under some light image manipulation.

  • MySQL is running VERY slow

    - by user1032531
I have two servers: a VPS and a laptop. I recently re-built both of them, and MySQL is running about 20 times slower on the laptop. Both servers used to run CentOS 5.8 and I think MySQL 5.1, and the laptop used to do great so I do not think it is the hardware. For the VPS, my provider installed CentOS 6.4, and then I installed MySQL 5.1.69 using yum with the CentOS repo. For the laptop, I installed CentOS 6.4 basic server and then installed MySQL 5.1.69 using yum with the CentOS repo. my.cnf for both servers are identical, and I have shown below. For both servers, I've also included below the output from SHOW VARIABLES; as well as output from sysbench, file system information, and cpu information. I have tried adding skip-name-resolve, but it didn't help. The matrix below shows the SHOW VARIABLES output from both servers which is different. Again, MySQL was installed the same way, so I do not know why it is different, but it is and I think this might be why the laptop is executing MySQL so slowly. Why is the laptop running MySQL slowly, and how do I fix it? • MySQL is running VERY slow on CentOS 6x (not 5x)

• Disk operations freeze Debian

    - by Grzenio
Hi, I have just installed Debian testing on my new desktop and I am not very happy with performance - when I perform a disk intensive operation, e.g. upgrade packages in the system, everything seems to freeze, e.g. changing tabs in Iceweasel takes 3 seconds. I run the Debian on my 3 year old Thinkpad X60 ultra-portable, and I don't have these issues. (every single parameter of the laptop is much worse than the desktop). I am using the default packaged kernel and scripts. I run hdparm -t /dev/sda1 And I got around 96GB/s, which is expected. What else can I try to make it work better? EDIT: grzes:/home/ga# hdparm -i /dev/sda /dev/sda: Model=WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1, FwRev=80.00A80, SerialNo=WD-WMAVU1362357 Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec SpinMotCtl Fixed DTR>5Mbs FmtGapReq } RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=50 BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=unknown, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16 CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=2930277168 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120} PIO modes: pio0 pio3 pio4 DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5 *udma6 AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-1,2,3,4,5,6,7 * signifies the current active mode EDIT2: Even my wife said "on this new computer I can't do anything when I copy the photos from the camera and its much worse than on the old one". So it must be serious. EDIT3: Updated to 2.6.32, but still no improvement EDIT4: I forgot to mention that the new disk is ext4, the old was ext3. EDIT5: Still not solved. • Debian virtual memory reaching limit

    - by Gregor
    As a relative newbie to systems, I inherited a Debian server and I've noticed that virtual memory is very high (around 95%!). The server has been running slow for around 6 months, and I was wondering if any of you had any tips on things I could try, particularly on freeing up memory. The server hosts various websites and also a Postit email server. Here are the details: Operating system Debian Linux 5.0 Webmin version 1.580 Time on system Thu Apr 12 11:12:21 2012 Kernel and CPU Linux 2.6.18-6-amd64 on x86_64 Processor information Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7400 @ 2.80GHz, 2 cores System uptime 229 days, 12 hours, 50 minutes Running processes 138 CPU load averages 0.10 (1 min) 0.28 (5 mins) 0.36 (15 mins) CPU usage 14% user, 1% kernel, 0% IO, 85% idle Real memory 2.94 GB total, 1.69 GB used Virtual memory 3.93 GB total, 3.84 GB used Local disk space 142.84 GB total, 116.13 GB used Free m output: free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3010 2517 492 0 107 996 -/+ buffers/cache: 1413 1596 Swap: 4024 3930 93 Top output: top - 11:59:57 up 229 days, 13:38, 1 user, load average: 0.26, 0.24, 0.26 Tasks: 136 total, 2 running, 134 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 3.8%us, 0.5%sy, 0.0%ni, 95.0%id, 0.7%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 3082544k total, 2773160k used, 309384k free, 111496k buffers Swap: 4120632k total, 4024712k used, 95920k free, 1036136k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 28796 www-data 16 0 304m 68m 6188 S 8 2.3 0:03.13 apache2 1 root 15 0 10304 592 564 S 0 0.0 0:00.76 init 2 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:04.06 migration/0 3 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:05.67 ksoftirqd/0 4 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/0 5 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.06 migration/1 6 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:01.26 ksoftirqd/1 7 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/1 8 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.12 events/0 9 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 events/1 10 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 khelper 11 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.02 kthread 16 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:15.51 kblockd/0 17 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:01.32 kblockd/1 18 root 15 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kacpid 127 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 khubd 129 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kseriod 180 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 70:09.05 kswapd0 181 root 17 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 aio/0 182 root 17 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 aio/1 780 root 16 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 ata/0 782 root 16 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 ata/1 783 root 16 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 ata_aux 802 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 scsi_eh_0 803 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 scsi_eh_1 804 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 scsi_eh_2 805 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 scsi_eh_3 1013 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 49:27.78 kjournald 1181 root 15 -4 16912 452 448 S 0 0.0 0:00.05 udevd 1544 root 14 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kpsmoused 1706 root 13 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kmirrord 1995 root 18 0 193m 3324 1688 S 0 0.1 8:52.77 rsyslogd 2031 root 15 0 48856 732 608 S 0 0.0 0:01.86 sshd 2071 root 25 0 17316 1072 1068 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 mysqld_safe 2108 mysql 15 0 320m 72m 4368 S 0 2.4 1923:25 mysqld 2109 root 18 0 3776 500 496 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 logger 2180 postgres 15 0 99504 3016 2880 S 0 0.1 1:24.15 postgres 2184 postgres 15 0 99504 3596 3420 S 0 0.1 0:02.08 postgres 2185 postgres 15 0 99504 696 628 S 0 0.0 0:00.65 postgres 2186 postgres 15 0 99640 892 648 S 0 0.0 0:01.18 postgres
