• looking for a clean way of how to bring down a ftp server for maintenance

  hello, i'm currently thinking of a clean way of how to bring an ftp server down for maintenance. i wonder, if anybody out there could give me some hints of how to solve this: i don't want to interrupt any current uploads, but want to block any new connects / uploads and wait, till uploads have finished, before taking down the ftp server is there a way of dynamically prevent user-logins and show a message eg.: "ftp currently down for maintenance" when a user tries to log in? are my thoughts on this very uncommon or how do others handle this -- i feel, that just halting ftp server and killing any current uploads is not the right way for this ... i use proftpd (with SQL backend) btw, maybe there are some specific solutions for this -- or are there any generic tools to achieve this? many thanks!

• vector quality of svg and pdf

  I'm converting pdf files to svg as it is easier to use svg files on webpages. I first thought the quality of svg must be similar to pdf, as they are both vector graphics. However, now I look a little better on it, it seems that pdf is a bit superior: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58922976/Photos/1.png) I wonder if I could change this in some way. Is this because pdf vectors are just better quality ? Or is this because chrome renders svg in lower quality than adobe reader renders pdf ? Is this a setting in the svg file that I could change ? • Laptop battery: is voltage really important to respect?

  I got an Acer Aspire 5100 and I just bought a new battery (after the stock battery just died yesterday). But I saw something after buying and I'm wondering whether it's really important or not. My stock battery was a 6-cell 4000mah 11.1v and the new battery is an 8-cell 4800mah 14.8v . I know that 8-cell and 4800mah is okay, but what about the 14.8v instead of 11.1v? The battery description says it's compatible with my laptop model (AS5100, model BL51), but the voltage difference makes me wonder. Will the laptop only take what it needs? Or will it be getting 14.8v straight in the brain? I know that my wall plug claims to output 19v, so logically I'm thinking a higher voltage battery shouldn't be a problem. Am I correct in thinking this? Thanks in advance for your answers!

• Use Dynamic DNS to access Java servlet, still need port forward ?

  If I use Dynamic DNS such as the free service at https://www.dyndns.com, do I still need to set up static IP and do port forward ? I have a DSL, most likely with dynamic IP address, and I run a Java servlet to get Paypal IPN messages on my notebook, in order for the messages to reach my notebook, I : [1] set up static IP and [2] did port forwarding. But I found each time the PC re-starts, it has a different external IP, so I was suggested to [3] get Dynamic DNS service like the free one mentioned above, but now I'm a bit confused, if I have step [3], do I still need to do [1] and [2], isn't step [3] supposed to do [1] and [2] for me ? But since I've already done [1],[2], now I wonder if they would cause trouble for step [3], do I need to undo them ? Or do I need all of them together ?

• Keep programs from using My Documents

  Is there any way to keep programs from using the My Documents folder (on Windows 7)? Everything program seems to want to get in there. I know I could manually symlink each folder a program decides to create, but I would rather not have to do that for each program. Another alternative is to put my stuff in a different location than My Documents, but then I wonder why Microsoft named it 'My Documents' and not 'Applications: put all your stuff here'... probably because filenames cannot have colons on them, but still. I'll probably end up partitioning my drive as I have been doing before, but I was wondering if there was any way to fix this painful annoyance.

• Handling Junk Email with Apple Mail.app and Gmail

  I've just setup my Apple Mail client to work with Google Apps through IMAP. One lingering question is how to best handle SPAM (Junk Mail), however. In their Help section, Google recommends that we disable junk filtering on the client. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892 This leads me to wonder what we should do when a junk message makes it past Google's filter? Do I just delete the message? If I do, the Google spam filter will never improve and "learn" that the message was junk. Do I have to log in to the web interface at Google to mark the message as spam? That seems a bit arduous for every spam email I get. What's the best way to handle this? Thanks!

• Is email encryption practical enough?

  All emails I have ever sent were sent as plain text. Like postcards, everybody on the way to the addressee could easily read and store them. This worries me. I know privacy is something of the past, but encrypting email is possible, at least in theory. However, I wonder whether it is practical enough. Is there anybody who has experience with email security? Is it easy to set up? And can you still send and receive email from all you friends and acquaintances?

  Hi All, I eventually sometimes watch most initial tcp connection attempts like this: tcpdump -nn -Z somepcapuser not src host (12x.x5.109.xxx or 62.75.160.xxx ) and not (port 9001 or 443 or 8080 ) and tcp[tcpflags]&(tcp-syn) !=0 and not tcp[tcpflags]& (tcp-ack) !=0 or icmp this works pretty well to quickly identify oddness so far. However, I now have a question on the following output: 03:53:52.227884 IP 203.81.166.20.53786 62.75.160.xxx.80: S 846930886:846930886(0) win 61690 "<"mss 1460,nop,nop,sackOK,opt-178:f04700000000,nop,wscale 4"" I wonder what the marked portion means, haven't seen that before. • Google Chrome Enterprise - Any Gotchas?

  Has anyone rolled out Google Chrome to a medium / large organisation? I would like to suggest it to our management (because I think it would work very nicely with some of our intranet applications), and I would like to find out what problems (if any) the rest of the world has been experiencing with it. Have you found any problems? I'm thinking of enterprise-level problems. I'm thinking that we can solve anything that requires a specific configuration / proxy setting / etc. I don't really know what I think might be a problem, but I wonder if there are any usability problems that occur when non-geeks use it? Or problems which only rear their ugly heads when you've got 50 users all doing something unexpected. Any helpful information or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. UPDATED: We tend to use Microsoft stuff, so Sharepoint, IIS, SQL Server, are typical building blocks of internal sites. (Thanks, @Jim, for reminding me to mention that).

• Snap Server 18000 connection help!

  I wonder if anyone here can help me. I have a home server setup made up of old secondhand computers, 2 servers running Windows Server 2003, 1 workstation running Windows 7, a 16 port switch & an adsl ethernet modem. All these connect and talk to each other fine but then I got a "Snap Server 18000" and a "Snap disk 30sa" sata array. When I turn the Snap on, it boots past the BIOS, runs a kernel, then displays: This device cannot be managed via the video/kbd/mouse interface. The video is now disabled. You may access the management functions from your web browser. Only, none of the other PCs detect it, so no browser can find it! I have checked all cables, and all LEDs indicate there's a connection. I have installed the windows "iscsi" and the adaptec "Snap Server Manager" on all PCs but still it's not detected. I don't know what else to do, please advise!

  for a project there will be me and one more programmer to develop a web service. i wonder how the development environment should be like. cause we need central storage (documents, pictures, business materials etc), file version handling, lamp (testing the web service) etc. i have never set up an environment for this before and want to have suggestions from experienced people which tools to use for effective collaboration. what crossed my mind: seperate applications: - google wave (for communication forth and back, setting up guide lines, other information) - team viewer (desktop sharing) - skype (calling) vps (ubuntu server): - svn (version tracking) - ftp (central storage) - lamp (testing the web service) - ssh (managing the vps) is this an appropriate programming environment? and regarding the vps, is it best practice to use ONE vps for all tasks listed up there? all suggestions and feedbacks are welcome!

We currently have one dedicated server with Rackspace in the UK of the following spec: HPDL385_G2_PrevGen HP Single Dual Core Opteron 2214 (2.2Ghz) 4GB RAM 2x 10,000 SCSI Drives in RAID 1 Our traffic is up to 550,000 UVs per month. The site runs off a PHP and MySQL setup. The database gets an absolute hammering, we have many complex queries joining multilpe tables. We are using APC for PHP caching. I'm getting to the stage where I've done as much DB and query optimisation as I can and wonder what the next step should be...... I've looked at memcache, but I've got the impression that his requires a large amount of RAM and ideally a dedicated box.... So is the next step to have two boxes; one for database, one for Apache? Or is there a step I've overlooked. Our load is usually around the 2 mark, but right now it's up at 20!

  More and more I see programmers developing web based applications that are based on what I call "ping-then-do" mentality. An example would be the application that pings the mail server before sending the mail. In a rather heated debate in another forum I made this statement, "If you are going to write programs that use the internet, you should at least have a basic idea of the fundamentals. The desire to "ping-then-do" tells me that many who are, don’t." On this forum and at Stack Overflow I see numerous questions about ping / trace route and wonder why? • Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8?

  Last year I got a new Western Digital WD Blue 500GB HDD to replace my old drive. The first thing I did was to install latest Windows 8. While installing Windows 8 I created 3 partitions, C drive for the OS and others for storage. The OS partition is 120GB (which at the time I thought would be plenty big) but I'm now realizing its too small! I wonder if it's possible to re-size HDD partition without reformatting and re-install my Windows 8. So that is my question, Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8 without having to re-format? I've used the Norton Partition Magic and Disk Management to make this happen but there doesn't seem to be any options to make it happen. Thanks for any help you guys can give regarding my question. I've worked hard to optimize my current install of Windows 8 and would hate to start all over again.

• kill process but fail

  Hi, I am running a bash script as a background job. The bash script calls a time-consuming executable. If I am not wrong, the running of the bash script is the parent process and the running of the executable is the child process. I now want to stop the whole running by killing the parent process which is the background job kill -9 $(jobs -p) The terminal shows that the running of the bash script is killed. But the running of the executable still hangs on the output of top. I just wonder how to also kill the child process? Thanks and regards!

• would unexpected power cuts harm the Linux OS?

  I am developing an application on a Linux embedded board (runs Debian) e.g. Raspberry Pi, Beagle Board/Bone, or olimex. The boards works on an environment that the electricity is cut unexpectedly (it is far complicated to place PSU, etc.) and it would happen every day couple times. I wonder if the unexpected power cuts would cause crash/problem on the Linux Operation System? If it is something that I should worry, what would you suggest to prevent the damages on OS against the unexpected power cuts? PS. The application needs to writes some data to the storage medium (SD card), I think it would not be suitable to mount it as read-only.

• Temporarily disable an AD server

  Topology and setup We have main office A, and branch office (abroad) B. Our ISP somehow messed up the MPLS, and office A<B will not be connected until a few days. At location B, we have an AD (and the other two ADs at location A). Location A also have an exchange server. The problems A few users at A have problem to login to their computers running Windows XP, the logon process kind of hangs where "Applying computer policies". Additionally, I can't start the Exchange management shell, it fails on get-recipient because the AD abroad (location B) is unreachable. Solution? I could delete the AD at B, but Im pretty sure it will be a hazzle to re-join it, and since the office is abroad it's not an option to just go there and re-install it - re join, I now wonder how I in location As primary and secondary ADs can temporarily disable AD at location B.

  I wonder how stuff like this works in windows (xp and other that have telnet): Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> http Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> pop3 Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> smtp Are these "named" ports? Only windows knows that it has to substitute port numbers coz these are standard ports? Is there way I could create such a named port on windows? • Online OCR website for processing an entire pdf file at one time?

  I am looking for an online OCR website for processing a multi-page pdf file at one time. Free preferably. I know http://www.newocr.com/. If I am correct, it can only OCR one page at a time, by manually clicking "Preview" and then clicking "OCR" for each page. After each page is OCRed, I have to copy out the text result manually too. If my pdf file has 30~ pages, it will be tedious to repeat the above process for each page. I wonder if there is some other online websites that OCR a whole pdf file, without asking me for manual operation? Thanks!

• debian mysql server always down

  I am hosting a mysql server in a debian 6.0.4 server hosted in linode, the new data is frequently written into the mysql server using R, about 30-40 "write" per minute, about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Recently I found that the mysql server seem to down frequently, always give me error that mysql server cannot be connected through socket. I wonder if this is caused by my high demand to my mysql server, and if this can be solved. I am definitely a newbie in manage server.   I just got myself a wifi capable cell phone, but I dont have a wireless internet at home. I do have a wired unlimited internet connection on my computer, and I wonder whether there is any gadget that I can plug into my computer (maybe at the usb port?) with which I can turn my computer into a wifi access point? I mean, a dongle or something which will enable me to connect my phone to my computer's internet through wi-fi? Also, I dont know anything about networking, so would it be hard for me to set up a secure wifi point? Thank you for reading this question through. • make vnc server listen on guest's ip address

  My host system has the IP 192.168.0.250. Now I want to create a kvm guest using a tap device (so the network card of the guest just acts like a "real" one). The guest has a static ip 192.168.0.249 which it setups on his own (no dhcp). To connect to the guest using VNC I can to use the host's IP. So far everything works fine. Now I wonder how I can make the VNC server to listen on the guest's IP address, so I can use the guest's IP address to connect using my vnc client. Of course I cannot use -vnc 192.168.0.249:1 as this IP is not active on the host and so fails with Cannot assign requested address. Can this be done with tap networking at all? If not, how to get it working?

• Mapping drives on MacOSX (Leopard/Snow Leopard) permanently inside LAN

  Hi, How do I "map" shared folders on a Mac, permanently? With map, I do not mean 'connect', but permanently add it to the system so it exists after reboot. Since workstations tend to shutdown, I wonder also the symptoms and cures in case that happens. In Linux, this can be done using the fstab file, but I noticed that volumes are mounted in a different structure than Linux. I need this to backup some workstations, doing a recursive job over a single directory, that should contain the shared folders. I use Terminal to access the main system, so by preference, the solution would be nice that works within a bash shell vs GUI. I can access all folders in Finder. Thanks!
