• Facelets charset problem

  Hi! In my earlier post there was a problem with JSF charset handling, but also the other part of the problem was MySQL connection parameters for inserting data into db. The problem was solved. But, I migrated the same application from JSP to facelets and the same problem happened again. Characters from input fields are replaced when inserting to database (c is replaced with Ä), but data inserted into db from sql scripts with proper charset are displayed correctly. I'm still using registered filter and page templates are used with head meta tag as following: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-2"> If I insert into h:form tag the following attribute: acceptcharset="iso-8859-2" I get correct characters in Firefox, but not in IE7. Is there anything else I should do to make it work? Thanks in advance.

• Xcode 3.2 says the version of iPhone OS isn't supported when my iPhone OS is version 3.1.3

  I just went through the whole certificate/keychain/provisioning/appID/profile/DNA test process to get my app running on my iPhone. Turns out my iPhone OS was out of date (3.0.1 I think), so I updated it. Now it says The version of iPhone OS on “Stefanie's phone” does not match any of the versions of iPhone OS supported for development with this copy of Xcode. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below. If necessary, the latest version of Xcode is available here. OS Installed on Stefanie's phone 3.1.3 (7E18) Xcode Supported iPhone OS Versions 3.1.2 (7D11) 3.1.1 (7C146) 3.1.1 (7C145) 3.1 (7C144) 3.0.1 (7A400) 3.0 2.2.1 2.2 2.1.1 2.1 2.0.2 (5C1) 2.0.1 (5B108) 2.0 (5A347) But I have Xcode 3.2.1, which is supposed to support iPhone OS 3.1.3. What am I doing wrong? I have a cruddy internet connection (HughesNet), so I can't upgrade the Xcode SDK without it taking literally days.

• jquery ajax vs browser url

  Hello all, I'm trying to use youtube's api to bring back a listing of a user's videos. The request url looks something like: http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/users/username/uploads with 'username' being the correct username. This bring back the appropriate url in the browser. • MonoTouch & SQLite - Cannot open database after previous successful connections

  I am having difficulty in reading data from my SQLite database from MonoTouch. • How to flush data in php and disconnect user but keep the script alive

  This is a trick question, while developing a php+ajax application i felt into some long queries, nothing wrong with them, but they could be done in background. I know that there's a way to just send a reply to user while throwing the real processing to another process by exec(), however it dosen't feels right for me, this might generate exploits and it's not pratical on making it compatible with virtual servers and cross platform. PHP offers the ob_* functions although they help on flushing the cache, but the user will keep connected until the script is running. I'm wondering if there's an alternate to exec to keep a script running after sending data to user and closing connection/thread with apache, or a less "dirty" way to have processing data sent to another script.

• How would I add code that would update an online "counter" so I know how many times an iPhone app is

  So I have searched for this but not finding anything about it and if I missed it sorry about that. What I am trying to do is see how to go about adding some code to my iphone app that will connect to a php script (if connection available) and update a counter so that I can let my clients know that their app is constantly being used? Also, would apple allow that? Or would my app be denied for doing such a thing? Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

• Retrieving datatypes from underlying database

  Hi, Im making an application that displays information about an underlying database. The database can be anything, but is typically either Oracle, MSSQL or MySQL. I am trying to extract the datatype but cannot seem to get this right. I have a DbConnection because i dont know whether I need a OleDbConnection or an OdbcConnection. On this connection I make a GetSchema("Columns", "mytablename") query and gets the result back. It seems though that there are some inconsistencies with my datatypes or the query returns different datatypes for the different databases. For instance, in my MSSQL database I query and get an integer back (which seems to be the OleDbType) which I map to a datatype. My varchars is now of type char - no length - and this confuses me a bit. I guess my main question is something like: Is there any way of making a uniform way of extracting datatypes across providers and having an "accurate" representation of the datatype?

  I am using nothing but raw Socket IO. There isn't one HttpURLConnection nor any http client libs in my project.   I have a Business Layer that passes a Conn string and a SQLCommand to a Data Layer like so public void PopulateLocalData() { System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand cmd = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand(); cmd.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure; cmd.CommandText = "usp_PopulateServiceSurveyLocal"; DataLayer.DataProvider.ExecSQL(ConnString, cmd); } The DataLayer then just executes the sql like so public static int ExecSQL(string sqlConnString, System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand cmd) { int rowsAffected; using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(sqlConnString)) { conn.Open(); cmd.Connection = conn; rowsAffected = cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); cmd.Dispose(); } return rowsAffected; } Is it OK for me to pass the SQLCommand as a parameter like this or is there a better more accepted way of doing it. One of my concerns is if an error occurs when executing the query the cmd.dispose line will never execute. Does that mean it will continue to use up memory that will never be released?

• What's a better way to display a handle for resizing a view on iPhone / iPad?

  I want to display a handle at the corners of a UIView that can be used to resize the view. How can I display the handles floating on the top of everything else and still have a connection to and be in sync with a view? The solution I implemented before looks like this: I put the view into another view that shows the handles on top of the corners. The problem with this approach is that the handles add extra space to the original view's size. Since Apple recommends at least 40 x 40 px for the size of a button, it is not very little space and also goes beyond the visible bounds of the original view. Another problem is that the original view has to be encapsulated in this 'helper view' object and thus becomes a part of something although it really is the main component.

When I test out the application on my computer I want to have my connection string set as follows in ServiceConfiguration.cscfg: <Setting name="DataConnectionString" value="UseDevelopmentStorage=true" /> When I publish to the cloud I need to have it set as follows: <Setting name="DataConnectionString" value="DefaultEndpointsProtocol=https;AccountName=xxxx;AccountKey=yyy" /> I keep going from one environment to the other and keep having to change the DataConnectionString. Is there a way that I can automate this? I looked around and can't see any examples but I'm sure some others have the same problem as me. Thanks, Nancy

  I know that table sources need a data source to hold the data that the tableview will display. Lets' say that I'm going to make my AppController be the data source of my tableview and that I make the connection in interface builder. My question is since my actual data is going to be stored in an array,let's call it myArray, when I set the data source in code should I do this [tableView setDataSource:myArray]; or this [tableView setDataSource:self]; I'm confused about this. setting the data source with the keyword "self" would set it to the AppController if I'm not mistaken.

• Why does a port occasionally stop listening? This happens only on occasion

  I have a Windows Service written in C# that listens on port 8591. I also have a web application hosted in IIS on the same server that makes request to the service. On occasion the port will stop listening and throws the following error: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8591". This happened 3 times in 2 months and just resolves itself. I can also fix it manually by restarting the service. I'm wondering if any one else has run into this problem and has possible suggestions to resolve. I'm a developer and have worked with our windows group extensively and they assure me there is no firewall or AV blocking the port on occasion. This is running on Windows Server 2008 R2. Very puzzled at what could be causing this to happen. Please let me know if you need more information.

• Is it possible to programmatically switch error log providers with ELMAH?

  Is it possible to switch from using the XML provider to SQL Server using ELMAH? I need to investigate this option because of the fallibility of our SQL Server where our ELMAH errors are stored. I want to be able to fail gracefully and continue logging to XML if the server fails. I can see that programmatic connection string switching is possible, and I see that ELMAH Issue 149 announces the programmatic configuration of default error log, but I can't actually see any code examples anywhere, so I'm not too sure if this is possible. I'm guessing it is, in which case does anyone know for sure? My question is similar to this one, except that I want to try and log errors to SQL Server, and if that fails switch to XML, not log to all stores all the time.

• hosting acounts for large uploads

  Hi, im wondering if anyone knows of any host providers ( uk preferably ) that deals mostly with accepting large file uploads. Most hosts only let you push something like 1.5mb ( thats taking into account the connection and the max execution time ). What i am looking for is a host specificaly for storing files on. I was going to create an upload script onto my application which posted the file to the external host and then return back ( using headers so the user doen't even know they have left ). Does anyone know of a host for this?

  I am trying to run this code: ItemTaxonomy iTaxonomy = from itemTaxonomy in connection.ItemTaxonomy where itemTaxonomy.Item.ID == itemView.ID orderby itemTaxonomy.Taxonomy.Name select itemTaxonomy; When I compiled it I get the error: Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.Linq.IOrderedQueryable<Website.Models.ItemTaxonomy>' to 'Website.Models.ItemTaxonomy'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) I believe the issue is with orderby itemTaxonomy.Taxonomy.Name but I am just trying to order by the name of Taxonomy items instead of their IDs. Is there a way to do that?

Is there a way for my main thread to spawn a worker thread and monitor that worker thread. If worker thread succeeds, well and good. If it hangs , the main thread could log error message and continue. How can I simulate in my test code that a worker thread is hanging. please let me know what could the code look like. • How to display recently installed programs and when they were installed?

  I have a Windows XP and I just installed about 12 new programs. Big mistake! Before I installed these programs, my internet connection was running great. But now after installing and restarting my laptop, the internet is crawling. How can I see what was changed? Hint: prior to installing these 12 programs, I installed IE version 8. So probably if I removed that it would fix it, but the problem is I need IE in order for my SQL/C# web application to work properly.

• Ajax/PHP - should I use one long running script or polling?

  Hello, I have a PHP script that is kicked off via ajax. This PHP script uses exec() to run a separate PHP script via the shell. The script that is called via exec() may take 30 seconds or so to complete. I need to update the UI once it is finished. Which of these options is preferred? a) Leave the HTTP connection open for the 30 seconds and wait for it to finish. b) Have exec() run the PHP script in the background and then use ajax polling to check for completion (every 5 seconds or so). c) Something else that I haven't thought of. • Tcp Socket Closed

  I always thought that if you didn't implement a heartbeat, there was no way to know if one side of a TCP connection died unexpectedly. If the process was just killed on one side and didn't exit gracefully, there was no way for the socket to send FIN or let the other side know that it was closed. (See some of the comments here for example http://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=566568 ) But there is a stock order server that I connect to that has a new "cancel all orders on disconnect feature" that cancels live orders if the client dis-connects. It works even when I kill the process on my end, and there is definitely no heartbeat from my app to it. So how is it able to detect when I've killed the process? My app is running on Windows Server 2003 and the order server is on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10. Does Windows detect that the process associated with the socket is no longer alive and send the FIN?

• Getting all the cookies including those from google analytics from one webpage

  Hello! I use apache 4 java libs for http get connections. I get all cookies from 2 other pages. But one other webpage contains google analytics cookies(utma,utmz...) and classic session id cookie (checked with firebug). When i try to get the cookies i only get sesson id cookie. Is there any trick to get all the cookies from java in connection with google analytics? If i want to make a http post, it seems that i have to send google analytics cookies too. I can copy my code if somebody wants, but it works on other pages(for printing cookies). Thank you

• Ado.Net Entity produces "namespace cannot be found"

  I've seen several possible solutions to this, but none have worked for me. After adding a ADO.NET Entity Data Model to my .Net Forms C# web project, I am unable to use it. Perhaps I made a mistake adding it? The name of the file added is QcFormData.edmx. In my code, perhaps I'm instantiating it incorrectly? I tried adding the line: QcFormDataContainer db = new QcFormDataContainer(); It appears in Intellisense, but when compiling I get the error : Error 13 The type or namespace name 'QcFormDataContainer' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) I've followed the suggestions that I found online that did not help: 1) made sure there is "using System.Data.Entity" 2) made sure the dll exists. 3) made sure the reference exists. 4) one post said use using System.Web.Data.Entity; but I do not see that available. What am I missing? • TSQL Check Database Instance Online

  What is the best way to check if an instance of Microsoft SQL Server is up? I have a view that spans two instances of Microsoft SQL Server but before querying it in a stored procedure I would like to verify that the second instance of the server is up with a fallback option of just querying local data. The second instance is a linked server. Currently I'm considering a SQL CLR function that can attempt to open a connection with a shorter timeout but I'm wondering if it's something that can be done directly in Transact SQL.
