• WCF: connecting to service over internet times out

  Still on the WCF learning curve: I've set up a self-hosted WCF Service (WSDualHttpBinding), which works fine on my own computer, which resides behind a firewall. If I run the client on my own computer, everything works great. Now I installed the client on a computer outside my network, and I'm trying to access the service via a dynamic DNS, like so: http://mydomain.dyndns.org:8000/MyService. My port forwarding issues were taken care of in a previous question; I can now see the service is up in my browser. But now when I try to run the client on the other machine, I get the following error message: "The open operation did not complete within the allotted timeout of 00:01:00. The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout." I have disabled security on the service, so that's not it. What else might be preventing the connection from happening?

• Connecting to hosted MySQL server with Java

  Hi, I've been recently trying to connect to a hosted MySQL using Java but can't get it to work. I can connect to a local MySQL with localhost using: connect = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost/lego?" + "user=******&password=*******"); (Replacing the astrisks withmy username and password) I can connect to the hosted MySQL database fine with PHP using: mysql_connect('mysql.hosts.co.uk','******','**********'); mysql_select_db('test'); My problem is, I cannot connect via Java. I have an Exception which is caught if the connection doesn't work and this is always printed out. Any ideas why it isn't working? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your time, InfinitiFizz

• jquery load php file - result is not complete

  I'm trying to load or better reload a DIV with content from an included php file. so the file is included in the webadmin.php from the location webadmin/pages.php. Then i alter some data in the DB through serializing. Now I would like to reload the pages.php from the callback of the serialize POST with load();. This all works fine up until the moment the data is supposed to be displayed in the div - i believe its because the php file is loaded from a different location, so the include paths for the DB Connection etc are probably wrong... Should I really write an extra PHP File for jquery or is there a way to tell jquery where to load it from? Its the first time I'm doing this - so bear with me for a moment on this one... Thanks! The number is 747-772-3101 (repalce 7's with 6's) This number is registered to t-mobile, also verified by t-mobile to be a valid subscriber sending 160,000+ text messages monthly and that all they have is an unlimited text messaging plan on top of the cheapest voice plan. This company of the number verified to me that they don't use gsm modems as they are too slow. So I know it's possible but who would I contact, Sales or anyone else reachable through a 1-800 is ignorant to these services and developer.t-mobile is worthless and doesn't reply to emails. Any info??

  I've seen other questions about this exception, but all of them seem to be resolved with the solution that a row with the primary key specified already exists. This doesn't seem to be the case for me. I have tried replacing all single quotes in my strings with double quotes, but the same problem occurs.   What is the best way to check if an instance of Microsoft SQL Server is up? I have a view that spans two instances of Microsoft SQL Server but before querying it in a stored procedure I would like to verify that the second instance of the server is up with a fallback option of just querying local data. The second instance is a linked server. Currently I'm considering a SQL CLR function that can attempt to open a connection with a shorter timeout but I'm wondering if it's something that can be done directly in Transact SQL.

• Applet problem with IPlanet and Firefox (class not found)

  I have an applet which loads nicely when accessed locally (both IE and Firefox). However, when I put my webpage in a webserver (local IPlanet), it refuses to load on Firefox (but still fine on IE).   I'm using MSSQLExpress named instance in my Silverlight 4 application. The database located in the web application data folder. I attached the db via VS2010. The program works, but the db doesn't show up in Management Studio Express. If I delete the connection from within VS2010, and Try to attach to db via Management Studio Express, on writes, that the database with same the name already exists. Why the database connected via VS2010 doesn't show up in Management Studio Express? Thanks in advance Gabor

I've tried something like this: Socket s = new Socket("www.google.com", 80); String ip = s.getLocalAddress().getHostAddress(); s.close(); This seem to work on some cases, but sometimes it returns the loopback-address or something completely different. Also, it requires internet connection. Does anyone got a more accurate method of doing this?

• Verifying serialisation streams when used for messaging

  I want to add distributed messaging to some applications. One target would be embedded and the other applications would be running on Windows. I'm thinking of having a connection manager, to which all of the applications would connect and communicate. I only need some simple kind of RPC mechanism. I've looked at Google Protocol Buffers, but I don't really like the idea of code generation. I'd rather use serialisation and somehow verify the format of the serialised stream. I.e. Perhaps send metadata about what the stream would contain so that each endpoint can verify it is reading the correct version. Does anyone know of any examples of this? Perhaps the message format could be read from a file which all the applications read to verify the stream format?

• Entity Framework 6: Alpha2 Now Available

  The Entity Framework team recently announced the 2nd alpha release of EF6.   The alpha 2 package is available for download from NuGet. Since this is a pre-release package make sure to select “Include Prereleases” in the NuGet package manager, or execute the following from the package manager console to install it: PM> Install-Package EntityFramework -Pre This week’s alpha release includes a bunch of great improvements in the following areas: Async language support is now available for queries and updates when running on .NET 4.5. Custom conventions now provide the ability to override the default conventions that Code First uses for mapping types, properties, etc. to your database. Multi-tenant migrations allow the same database to be used by multiple contexts with full Code First Migrations support for independently evolving the model backing each context. Using Enumerable.Contains in a LINQ query is now handled much more efficiently by EF and the SQL Server provider resulting greatly improved performance. All features of EF6 (except async) are available on both .NET 4 and .NET 4.5. This includes support for enums and spatial types and the performance improvements that were previously only available when using .NET 4.5. Start-up time for many large models has been dramatically improved thanks to improved view generation performance. Below are some additional details about a few of the improvements above: Async Support .NET 4.5 introduced the Task-Based Asynchronous Pattern that uses the async and await keywords to help make writing asynchronous code easier. EF 6 now supports this pattern. This is great for ASP.NET applications as database calls made through EF can now be processed asynchronously – avoiding any blocking of worker threads. This can increase scalability on the server by allowing more requests to be processed while waiting for the database to respond. The following code shows an MVC controller that is querying a database for a list of location entities:     public class HomeController : Controller     {         LocationContext db = new LocationContext();           public async Task<ActionResult> Index()         {             var locations = await db.Locations.ToListAsync();               return View(locations);         }     } Notice above the call to the new ToListAsync method with the await keyword. When the web server reaches this code it initiates the database request, but rather than blocking while waiting for the results to come back, the thread that is processing the request returns to the thread pool, allowing ASP.NET to process another incoming request with the same thread. In other words, a thread is only consumed when there is actual processing work to do, allowing the web server to handle more concurrent requests with the same resources. A more detailed walkthrough covering async in EF is available with additional information and examples. Also a walkthrough is available showing how to use async in an ASP.NET MVC application. Custom Conventions When working with EF Code First, the default behavior is to map .NET classes to tables using a set of conventions baked into EF. For example, Code First will detect properties that end with “ID” and configure them automatically as primary keys. However, sometimes you cannot or do not want to follow those conventions and would rather provide your own. For example, maybe your primary key properties all end in “Key” instead of “Id”. Custom conventions allow the default conventions to be overridden or new conventions to be added so that Code First can map by convention using whatever rules make sense for your project. The following code demonstrates using custom conventions to set the precision of all decimals to 5. As with other Code First configuration, this code is placed in the OnModelCreating method which is overridden on your derived DbContext class:         protected override void OnModelCreating(DbModelBuilder modelBuilder)         {             modelBuilder.Properties<decimal>()                 .Configure(x => x.HasPrecision(5));           } But what if there are a couple of places where a decimal property should have a different precision? Just as with all the existing Code First conventions, this new convention can be overridden for a particular property simply by explicitly configuring that property using either the fluent API or a data annotation. A more detailed description of custom code first conventions is available here. Community Involvement I blogged a while ago about EF being released under an open source license.  Since then a number of community members have made contributions and these are included in EF6 alpha 2. Two examples of community contributions are: AlirezaHaghshenas contributed a change that increases the startup performance of EF for larger models by improving the performance of view generation. The change means that it is less often necessary to use of pre-generated views. UnaiZorrilla contributed the first community feature to EF: the ability to load all Code First configuration classes in an assembly with a single method call like the following: protected override void OnModelCreating(DbModelBuilder modelBuilder) {        modelBuilder.Configurations            .AddFromAssembly(typeof(LocationContext).Assembly); } This code will find and load all the classes that inherit from EntityTypeConfiguration<T> or ComplexTypeConfiguration<T> in the assembly where LocationContext is defined. This reduces the amount of coupling between the context and Code First configuration classes, and is also a very convenient shortcut for large models. Other upcoming features coming in EF 6 Lots of information about the development of EF6 can be found on the EF CodePlex site, including a roadmap showing the other features that are planned for EF6. One of of the nice upcoming features is connection resiliency, which will automate the process of retying database operations on transient failures common in cloud environments and with databases such as the Windows Azure SQL Database. Another often requested feature that will be included in EF6 is the ability to map stored procedures to query and update operations on entities when using Code First. Summary EF6 is the first open source release of Entity Framework being developed in CodePlex. The alpha 2 preview release of EF6 is now available on NuGet, and contains some really great features for you to try. • Rails with DB2 and multiple schemas

  I have a 'legacy' DB2 database that has many other applications and users. Trying to experiment with a rails app. Got everything working great with the ibm_db driver. Problem is that I have some tables like schema1.products, schema1.sales and other tables like schema2.employees and schema2.payroll. In the ibm_db adapter connection, I specify a schema, like schema1 or schema2, and I can work within that one schema, but I need to be able to easily (and transparently) reference both schemas basically interchangeably. I don't want to break the other apps, and the SQL I would normally write against DB2 doesn't have any of these restrictions (schemas can be mixed in SQL against DB2 without any trouble at all). I would like to just specify table names as "schema1.products" for example and be done with it, but that doesn't seem to jive with the "rails way" of going about it. Suggestions?

• Intentionally get a "MySQL server has gone away" error

  I'm trying to cope with MySQL's error MySQL server has gone away in a django env. The quick workaround was to set the global wait_timeout MySQL variable to a huge value, but in the long run this would accumulate to many open connections. I figured I'll get the wait_timeout variable and poll the server in smaller intervals. After implementing this I tried to test it but am failing to get the error. I set global wait_timeout=15 and even set global interactive_timeout=15 but the connection refuses to disappear. I'm sure I'm polling the database in larger intervals than 15sec. What could be the cause for not being able to recreate this error?

• Combining features from other projects in an ASP.NET MVC application

  Hello, I am writing an ASP.NET MVC application that combines a set of features from existing applications. The new application is suppose to use UI features and logic created (especially for this purpose) in the existing applications. For that reason I wanted to create in the existing applications some kind of a "blackbox" that I will be able to drop in my new application along with a matching connection string, and it will work independently, binding data on it's own. I thought about using partial views, but I am having trouble with passing the model data to it, since the controller of the new application should not know about the model of the existing applications. I can not use ASP.NET WebForms, since my application should be a "postback-less" application, and ASP.NET AJAX toolkit or frameworks alike are out of the question. • http://localhost/ not working on Windows 7. What's the problem?

  I have a big problem opening http://localhost/ on Windows 7 (beta). I installed this os and everything went great; when I installed Wamp I saw that localhost is not working at all. I just see this error: Failed to Connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost. in Mozilla and Explorer. I removed Wamp and after some weeks (that means two weeks from today) I installed NetBeans on Windows 7. I created a test PHP script and when I debug it, I get the same error again. I tried to access it with ip 127.... but still the same. What is the problem? When i installed NetBeans I installed it in port 8080.

• Excel Spreadsheet - Best way to perform an Oracle Query on a cell

  Hi there, I have an Excel Spreadsheeet. There is a cell containing a concatenated name and surname (don't ask why), for example: Cell A2 BLOGGSJOE On this cell, I would like to run the following SQL and output it to cell A3, A4 and A5 SELECT i.id, i.forename, i.surname FROM individual i WHERE UPPER(REPLACE('" & A2 & "', ' ', '')) = UPPER(REPLACE(i.surname|| i.forename, ' ', '')) AND NVL(i.ind_efface, 'N') = 'N' Any idea how I could perform an oracle query on each cell and return the result? I have enabled an oracle datasource connection in Excel, just not sure what to do now. Is this a stupid approach, and can you recommend a better more proficient way? Thanks muchly! I lack the necessary experience in this type of thing! :-) EDIT: I am aware that I could just write a simple ruby/php/python/whatever script to loop through the excel spreadsheet (or csv file), and then perform the query etc. but i thought there might be a quick way in excel itself.

• Sending file over socket

  I'm have a problem sending data as a file from one end of a socket to the other. What's happening is that both the server and client are trying to read the file so the file never gets sent. I was wondering how to have the client block until the server's completed reading the file sent from the client. I have this working with raw packets using send and recv, but figured this was a cleaner solution... Client: connects to server creating socket connection creates a file on socket and sends data waits for file from server Server: waits for file from client Complete interraction: client sends data to server server sends data to client

Authentication works well, bur roles always returns empty roles array for connected user. Similarly, if I try to add a user to a known, existing role, an exception is thrown : If Not Roles.IsUserInRole(userName, "club") Then Roles.AddUserToRole(userName, "club") End If Exception msg is: Cannot find role '' (I mean the role name isn't given back in exception.) Any clue? Please do not tell me to use Windows Client Administration within project services, I need my own SQL DB connection + the client app services is a bloated dfeature, bug prone.
