  • Absolute path of a file object

    This has been discussed on StackOverflow before - I am trying to find a good way to find the absolute path of a file object, but I need it to be robust to os.chdir(), so cannot use f = file('test') os.path.abspath(f.name) Instead, I was wondering whether the following is a good solution - basically extending the file class so that on opening, the absolute path of the file is saved: class File(file): def __init__(self, filename, *args, **kwargs): self.abspath = os.path.abspath(filename) file.__init__(self, filename, *args, **kwargs) Then one can do f = File('test','rb') os.chdir('some_directory') f.abspath # absolute path can be accessed like this Are there any risks with doing this?

    Starting a new project and was planning on storing all of my web content in XML. I do not have access to a database so this seemed like the next best thing. One thing I'm struggling with is how to structure the XML for links (which will later be transformed using XSLT). It needs to be fairly flexible as well.     Hello. I am running a script that walks a directory structure and generates new files in each folder in the directory. I want to delete some of the files right after creation. This is my idea, but it is quite wrong I imagine: directory = os.path.dirname(obj) m = MeshExporterApplication(directory) os.remove(os.path.join(directory,"*.mesh.xml")) How to you put wildcards in a path?     Does anyone know how to break out of a for loop when it's typed directly into the windows command-line? I know you can use gotos and labels to break out of it when it's in a batch file, but I can't find anything about breaking out of one on the command line. Here's a simple example: C:> for /l %i in (1,0,1) do @ping -n 1 google.com || (echo ^G & msg user "Google is down!" & QUIT) This should infinitely ping google.com. If it ever fails, it beeps (echo ^G), displays a message box to the user "user" that says "Google is down!", and QUITs. I don't know how to do the quit part though. I guess I could do something like taskkill /f /im cmd.exe, but I was looking for something more elegant. Any tips?

  • Authenticating GTK app to run with root permissions

    I have a UI app (uses GTK) for Linux that requires to be run as root (it reads and writes /dev/disk*). Instead of requiring the user to open a root shell or use "sudo" manually every time when he launches my app, I wonder if the app can use some OS-provided API to ask the user to relaunch the app with root permissions. (Note: gtk app's can't use "setuid" mode, so that's not an option here.) The advantage here would be an easier workflow: The user could, from his default user account, double click my app from the desktop, and the app then would relaunch itself with root permission after been authenticated by the API/OS. I ask this because OS X offers exactly this: An app can ask the OS to launch an executable with root permissions - the OS (and not the app) then asks the user to input his credentials, verifies them and then launches the target as desired. I wonder if there's something similar for Linux (Ubuntu, e.g.) Update: The app is a remote operated disk repair tool for the unsavvy Linux user, and those Linux noobs won't have much understanding of using sudo or even changing their user's group memberships, especially if their disk just started acting up and they're freaking out. That's why I seek a solution that avoids technicalities like this.

  • How can I get six Xbox controllers to provide input to an HTML5 game?

    I'm creating a six player HTML 5 game designed to be played locally (Red Ice). I've previous set up handling 7 Wiimotes using something along the lines of Joy2Key to map each input for each player to a separate keyboard key, but Wiimotes are pretty hard on the hands for these types of games and not very ergonomic so I thought I'd try and get Xbox controller support. I don't believe that any simple key mapping solution will work due to the nature of the directional stick. My inclination is that this will require a browser plugin and if so I'd prefer to write the plugin for Google Chrome. How do I create a Chrome browser plugin to handle multiple Xbox controllers or is there some other way? Please do not answer this question saying it can't be done, because it absolutely can. EDIT: I don't believe any keymapping/mouse simulating solution will work unless it can reliably distinguish six axis of inputs, one per player.
