• How do I fake 2 discrete monitors using a DualHead2Go?

  I just got a [Matrox Dualhead2Go|http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/] for use with my MacBook Pro. I realise that the reason it works is that it fakes 1 big (wide) monitor. I also kind of depended on the software that came with it to trick OSX into accepting it as 2 monitors. Turns out the support is kind of lame: it just adds shortcuts for maximizing the window to whatever screen you want. And it even gets that wrong, since my dock doesn't auto-hide, but it doesn't take it in account while resizing, causing my window do end up "behind" my dock. (I've made a AppleScript that does the resize correctly, that I'll post below). There's two glaring issues this causes: Full screen (video, etc.) takes up both monitors, and dialogs just pops up in the middle. Is there a way to trick OSX, or at least a way to fix these issues?

• "MAS SMS-CDMA" Bluetooth service

  I have my phone (LG Rumor Touch on Sprint) connected to my Windows 7 computer by Bluetooth. Usually, one of the services is unidentified and no driver is installed. Occasionally I have an issue that is solved by removing and re-pairing my phone with my computer. The last few times I have paired my computer and phone, the unidentified service was found and installed, as "MAS SMS-CDMA". It sounds like an interface that allows sending and reading SMS messages via Bluetooth. However, there is no software available from Sprint or LG that I have found that offers such functionality. Searching Google for "MAS SMS-CMDA" (with quotes) did not provide anything useful, only what appear to be CMDA information written in Spanish. What can I use this service for, and how do I use it?

• MPEG2-TS streaming: UDP or RTP?

  Hello I'm working on an IPTV streaming server in Linux (Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS) that has a DVB-S/S2 card to obtain satellite channels. Then with MuMuDVB I map all channels in the transponder to a multicast group, for multicast transmission. Now for the MuMuDVB software I can either use UDP for transmission or I can add the RTP header. I was wondering what would be the most convenient for MPEG2-TS because I've heard that RTP is used primarily for MPEG4, but It's also said that RTP can be used for MPEG2-TS. Thanks for your help.

• How to calculate turn heading to a missile?

  I have a missile that is shot from a ship at an angle, the missile then turns towards the target in an arc with a given turn radius. How do I determine the point on the arc when I need to start turning so the missile is heading straight for the target? EDIT What I need to do before I launch the missiles is calculate and draw the flight paths. So in the attached example the launch vehicle has a heading of 90 deg and the targets are behind it. Both missiles are launched at a relative heading of -45deg or + 45 deg to the launch vehicle's heading. The missiles initially turn towards the target with a known turn radius. I have to calculate the point at which the turn takes the missile to heading at which it will turn to directly attack the target. Obviously if the target is at or near 45 degrees then there is no initial turn the missile just goes straight for the target. After the missile is launched the map will also show the missile tracking on this line as indication of its flight path. What I am doing is working on a simulator which mimics operational software. So I need to draw the calculated flight path before I allow the missile to be launched. In this example the targets are behind the launch vehicle but the precalculated paths are drawn.

• Would I be able to use code hosting services to host malware code?

  Let me start by saying that I am a computer security researcher. Part of my job is to create malware to deploy on a controlled environment in order to study or evaluate several aspects of computer security. Now, I am starting to think that using an online code hosting service (such as BitBucket, Github, etc...) to have all my code in 1 place, would allow me to work on my projects more efficiently. My question is: Are there any issues with this? I have studied those companies' privacy policies, and they state that they allow usage of their services for lawful usage. Since I am not distributing malware, but I am only using it on my machines and machines that I am authorized to use, aren't I allowed to use the service? For the usage that I am doing, malware is the same as any other software. I recognise that I should be extremely careful with code hosting, as any mistake from my part could hold me liable for damages and leave me open against legal action. As such I am recognizing that I should use private repositories, so the code is not available to the public. But how private is a private repository? How can I trust that companies like them will not leak or sell a potential (electronic) viral weaponry that I may have created in the future?

• How can I perform a controlled shutdown of a virtualbox guest using VBoxManage?

  I'm currently testing Ubuntu 10.04, and have install the VirtualBox software. I have also installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a VirtualBox guest running on the host system. I've installed the VirtualBox Utils into the guest OS, as follows: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils What I want to be able to do is to initiate a controlled shutdown of the guest, from the host system using the VBoxManage command. I first tried this command: VBoxManage controlvm guest poweroff which worked, but didn't initiate a controlled shutdown, it effectively pulls the plug on the guest. I've since found that this command should do the trick: VBoxManage controlvm guest acpipowerbutton but this doesn't appear to do anything. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? p.s. I don't want to use SSH & Certificates to do this, as I'm also going to be running Windows guests, and I want the solution to work for all guests.

• Need decent undelete utility for Windows

  So I get the phone call from a friend or relative or client: "Looks like I accidentally deleted 4 years worth of accounting data. Oh, and I don't have any backups. Can you help?" What I need is a good Windows tool (for NTFS I think) that scans blocks marked as deleted and attempts to recover the file. And I need one that can be run from a thumb drive or since installing new software has a decent chance of overwriting the data before it can be recovered. Googling for such tools turns up mostly carefully-crafted advertisements for moderately expensive products with a "Free! Demo! Version!" which is not exactly reassuring. Any recommendations for a good tool?

  I'm a software developer currently stuck to support CyberArk at a large company. I need to pull up a list of accounts that is belong to a certain user. For example, let's said I have a user account named Bob and I want to find all the accounts that belong to Bob in AD meaning on the Organization tab of a user properties, the Manager should be Bob. I've absolutely zero knowledge regarding AD except the very basic. Is there a way to do it? I only have access to "Active Directory Users and Computers" tool and I'm not even sure if I have enough privilege to run script or install powershell to do it but would like to know the script or powershell command to do so if there is one.

• Can't add printer on Windows XP

  I've added a HP 4250 printer to about half a dozen Windows XP PCs in our office without any problems whatsoever, but for some reason I haven't been able to add it to one particular PC today. I go through the Add Printer wizard to add a local printer attached to the PC, enter the new port number as a Standard TCP/IP Port, install the driver. At the end of the wizard I get the following error message: Full error message: "windows cannot connect to the printer. either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server." This doesn't make any sense as I am able to ping the printer from the PC. The print spooler is running, and any firewall software on the local PC is switched off.

However, today I installed the Vimperator extension on Firefox, and through there are some problems (all of which will be solved after using it until I get used to it), I found it great. However, I'm still in the "Holy fuck this is totally awesome" phase of software testing, and in some time will go back to the "I have this thing" phase.   In my current position as Software Engineering Manager I have been through a lot of ups and downs with staffing, ranging from laying-off everyone who was on my team as we went through the great economic downturn in 2007-2008, to numerous rounds of interviewing and hiring contractors, full-time employees, and converting some contractors to employee status.  I have not yet blogged much about my experiences, but I plan to do that more in the next few months.  But before I do that, let me point you to a great article that somebody else wrote on The Unspoken Truth About Managing Geeks that really hits the target.  If you are a non-technical person who manages technical employees, you definitely have to read that article.  And if you are a technical person who has been promoted into management, this article can really help you do your job and communicate up the line of command about your team.  When you move into management with all the new and different demands put on you, it is easy to forget how things work in the tech subculture, and to lose touch with your team.  This article will help you remember what’s going on behind the scenes and perhaps explain why people who used to get along great no longer are, or why things seem to have changed since your promotion. • Current alternative to the old CHECKSUM program

  I'm looking for an application that does md5/sha hash check on specific files/folders periodically and store an index file per folder for future verification. I remember such application exist in DOS days, to detect files infected by virus. The main purpose for this is to detect corrupted copy of backup, as I understand that consumer grade hardware are not 100% error free when doing backup or file transfer from device to device. The hash can also be used to generate a list of changed files for backup. Most of the software I can find is hash manually. EDIT: Windows based application, preferably a shell extension which I can right click on a folder and do a checksum/verify all files in that folder. Even better if that can integrate with a backup/sync program like BeyondCopy

• How to create a virtual input in windows from an audio stream

  Great to find this forum full of knowledge. I was wondering if anyone knew of an application or other work around to create a virtual input device in windows. I have a IP cam app on my android phone, that I would like to use for skype webcam. It comes with a port for getting the video feed into skype, and that works great. However, the only audio available, is a OGG stream. Both video and audio work great with media players such as VLC etc, but ot with skype, since skype only works with windows input devices. Is there such software outthere, in which I could simply name my audio stream address, and pipe that to a virtual input device to allow skype to find it?

• Preparing a new physical system with VMWare

  I need to create a new installation of Windows, but at the same time I need this computer. So I decided to create a new physical disk from within VMWare, install windows/drivers/software and then just replace the HDD in the computer. I've bought a new HDD, split it into two partions and installed Windows 7 using the VMWare's ability to use phusical disks. I can see the windows files and directories that have been created on this partition, but when I'm replacing the HDD in the host machine it cannot boot from it. Why is that? Is it at all possible to create a bootable physical disk with VMWare or I should create a virtual disk and then use some HDD imaging tool to copy the HDD image to a physical disk? Maybe there's a better way of installing a new system and working on the computer at the same time?

• PASS Location fixed for the next 2 years - Are they listening?

  I've just received the PASS connector newsletter with details of the decision of where to locate the next summits. To me it shows you how you can spin statistics they way you want to. I am very suprised by the numbers 81% said that they would like an east coast event. The spin is that "When we look at responses from only 2008 and 2009 Summit attendees (our most successful ones by far), the number who want a future Summit outside of Seattle drops to 69%." Wow the number drops thats bad. We must stay in Seattle then. My take however is that 69% of those willing to travel to Seattle want an event NOT in Seattle. Doesn't that suggest that people would like an event not in Seattle. I appreciate the comment about the launch years however 2012 isn't going to be a launch year because they need to get SQL out of the door before then to meet the 3 year software assurance cycle. So sticking 2012 in Seattle is IMHO a bad decision. It might keep the cost down for the PASS org, Microsoft and the attendees that live near Seattle but does it keep the cost down for the rest of the SQL Community? They do mention a possibility of an event on the East Coast and I do hope that its not just lip service. Flights for me to the East coast look ~30% cheaper than to Seattle and I've never been to the East Coast. Come on PASS show you are listening to the community.

Oracle just released a Security Alert to announce the availability of fixes for two vulnerabilities (CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887) affecting Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. Both vulnerabilities only affect Java when running in a 32-bit web browser. These vulnerabilities are not present in Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications and do not impact any Oracle server based software. The first vulnerability (CVE-2010-0886) affects the Java Deployment Toolkit (version 6 update 10 through 19) on Windows only. The second vulnerability (CVE-2010-0887) affects the Java Plug-in (version 6 update 18 and 19) on Windows, Solaris and Linux. Both vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to run commands on the user's system with the privileges of the user, whose system may have become compromised by visiting a malicious web site. Oracle rated the severity of both vulnerabilities with a CVSS Base Score of 10.0 because many Windows users grant themselves administrative privileges. However, on other platforms, or for Windows users with limited privileges, the CVSS Base Score is only 7.5, because a successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities cannot result in a full compromise of the affected system.   Hi, My last shop did not have a process. Agile essentially meant they did not have a plan at all about how to develop or manage their projects. It meant "hey, here's a ton of work. Go do it in two weeks. We're fast paced and agile." They released stuff that they knew had problems. They didn't care how things were written. There were no code reviews--despite there being several developers. They released software they knew to be buggy. At my previous job, people had the attitude as long as it works, it's fine. When I asked for a rewrite of some code I had written while we were essentially exploring the spec, they denied it. I wanted to rewrite the code because code was repeated in multiple places, there was no encapsulation and it took people a long time to make changes to it. So essentially, my impression is this: programming boils down to the following: Reading some book about the latest tool/technology Throwing code together based on this, avoiding writing any individual code because the company doesn't want to "maintain custom code" Showing it and moving on to the next thing, "as long as it works." I've always told myself that next job I'm going to get a better shop. It never happens. If this is it, then I feel stuck. The technologies always change; if the only professional development here is reading the latest MS Press technology book, then what have you built in 10 years but a superficial knowledge of various technologies? • Should I upgrade Exchange 2003 or just upgrade the hardware?

  My organization currently has a 4 y/o Exchange 2003 email server (32-bit, Intel Pentium D @ 3GHz, 3GB RAM). It's run very well over the past 4 years but it is time to upgrade its hardware. This server would handle email for approximately 30 clients, a few OWA users with iPhones. My (somewhat ambiguous) question is, when I receive the new hardware should I build out a new Exchange 2003 deployment or should I look at Exchange 2007 / 2010? I've heard that Exchange 2010 requires Sharepoint 2010 (which I am currently not running). Are there benefits that a small-medium sized business can or can't do without? Am I making a horrible mistake staying with antiquated software? Other details: Exchange 2003 (v6.5 + SP2) single front-end server All opinions and thoughts are very much appreciated.

• How can I solve Windows PPTP VPN issues?

  I'm having persistent problems with Windows PPTP VPN connections. The VPN appears up whilst the tunnel won't transfer traffic (ping to a remote IP within the VPN works for a while, and then fails). The client receives routing information via DHCP. When the connection fails, the routing table is still correct so I don't think it's a routing problem. My internet connection is via an ADSL2 line. There's software to deal with PPTP problems, like TunnelRat, but I don't want to install v1.1 of the .NET framework and I'd rather get to the bottom of the problem (I have multiple VPN connections and some are more unreliable than others). What can I do to get to the bottom of this? Alternatively, what can I do to keep the connection alive?

• How to hire support people?

  I manage a tech support team at a mid-sized software company. We are the last line of support, so issues that we can't fix need to be escalated to the development team. When I joined the company, our team wasn't capable of much beyond using a specific set of troubleshooting steps to solve known issues and escalating anything else to the developers. It's always been a goal of mine for our team to shoulder as much of the support burden as possible without ever bothering a developer. Over the past few years, I, along with several new hires I've made, have made pretty good progress in that direction. We've coded our own troubleshooting tools which now ship with several of our products. When users have never-before-seen issues, we analyze stack traces and troubleshoot down to the code level, and if we need to submit a bug, half the time we've already identified in the code where in the code the bug is and offered a patch to fix it. Here's the problem I've always had: finding support people capable of the work I've described above is really difficult. I've hired 3 people in the past 3 years, and I've probably looked at several thousand resumes and conducted several hundred phone screens to do so. I know it's pretty well accepted that hiring good people is tough in the tech industry, but it seems that support is especially difficult -- there are clearly thousands of people walking around calling themselves support analysts, but 99%+ of them seemingly aren't capable of anything beyond reading a script. I'm curious if anyone has experience recruiting the sort of folks I'm talking about, and if you have any suggestions to share. We've tried all sorts of things -- different job titles/descriptions, using headhunters, etc. And while we've managed to hire a few good folks, it's basically taken us a year to find an appropriate candidate for each opening we've had, and I can't help but wonder if there's something we could be doing differently.
