  • How is a switch statement better than a series of if statements? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Should I use switch statements or long if…else chains? I'm working on a small program that will conduct an Insertion Sort. A number will be inputted through the keyboard and stored in a variable I called "num." I've decided to use a switch statement in order to obtain the number inputted. switch( e.getKeyCode() ) { case KeyEvent.VK_0: num = 0; break; case KeyEvent.VK_1: num = 1; break; case KeyEvent.VK_2: num = 2; break; case KeyEvent.VK_3: num = 3; break; case KeyEvent.VK_4: num = 4; break; case KeyEvent.VK_5: num = 5; break; case KeyEvent.VK_6: num = 6; break; case KeyEvent.VK_7: num = 7; break; case KeyEvent.VK_8: num = 8; break; case KeyEvent.VK_9: num = 9; break; } I realized one other course of action could have been to use a set of if statements. if( e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_0 ) num = 0; else if( e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_1 ) num = 1; etc. for every number up until 9. I then wondered what the essential difference is between a switch statement and a series of if statements. I know it saves space and time to write, but it's not that much. So, my question is, aside from the space, does a switch statement differ from a series of if statments in any way? Is it faster, less error-prone, etc.? This question really doesn't affect my code that much. I was just wondering. Also, this question pertains to the JAVA language, not any other programming language.

  • Play Framework Plugin for NetBeans IDE

    The start of minimal support for the Play Framework in NetBeans IDE 7.3 Beta would constitute (1) recognizing Play projects, (2) an action to run a Play project, and (3) classpath support. Well, most of that I've created already, as can be seen, e.g., below you can see logical views in the Projects window for Play projects (i.e., I can open all the samples that come with the Play distribution). Right-clicking a Play project lets you run it and, if the embedded browser is selected in the Options window, you can see the result in the IDE. Make a change to your code and refresh the browser, which immediately shows you your changes: What needs to be done, among other things: A wizard for creating new Play projects, i.e., it would use the Play command line to create the application and then open it in the IDE. Integration of everything available on the Play command line. Maybe the logical view, i.e., what is shown in the Projects window, should be changed. Right now, only the folders "app" and "test" are shown there, with everything else accessible in the Files window, as can be seen in the screenshot above. More work on the classpath, i.e., I've hardcoded a few things just to get things to work correctly. Options window extension to register the Play executable, instead of the current hardcoded solution. Scala integrations, i.e., investigate if/how the NetBeans Scala plugin is helpful and, if not, create different/additional solutions. E.g., the HTML templates are partly in Scala, i.e., need to embed Scala support into HTML. Hyperlinking in the "routes" file, as well as special support for the "application.conf" file. Anyone interested, especially if you're a Play fan (a "playboy"?), in joining me in working on this NetBeans plugin? I'll be uploading the sources to a java.net repository soon. Saving the Data: To sabe the data in the DB, we are going to call “SaveChanges” method of the Object Context. After invoke it, the property will be EntityState.Unchanged.   What does SaveChanges Method? This function will synchronize and send all pending changes to DB. It will add, modify or delete all Entities, whose EntityState property, is setted to Added, Deleted or Modified. After finishing, all added or modified entities will be change the State to “Unchanged”, and deleted Entities must take the “Detached” state.

Many times developers would like to insert a new row in a table or, if the row already exists, update it with new data.   • Really weird GL Behaviour, uniform not "hitting" proper mesh? LibGdx

    Ok, I got some code, and you select blocks on a grid. The selection works. I can modify the blocks to be raised when selected and the correct one shows. I set a color which I use in the shader. However, I am trying to change the color before rendering the geometry, and the last rendered geometry (in the sequence) is rendered light. However, to debug logic I decided to move the block up and make it white, in which case one block moves up and another block becomes white. I checked all my logic and it knows the correct one is selected and it is showing in, in the correct place and rendering it correctly. When there is only 1 it works properly.   • MVVM and Animations in Silverlight

    I wanted to spin an icon to show progress to my user while some content was downloading. I'm using MVVM (aren't you) and made a satisfactory Storyboard to spin the icon. However, it took longer than expected to trigger that animation from my ViewModel's property.I used a combination of the GoToState action and the DataTrigger from the Microsoft.Expression.Interactions dll as described here.Then I had problems getting it to start until I found this approach that saved the day.   • Event-Driven Debugging

    Most application troubleshooting involves getting an error, analyzing the error message, and at worst, attaching a debugger to work out the real cause. What is not really covered is how to troubleshoot an applicaiton that is not errant, but is having a performance issue, and more than likely, in the middle of the night when you are snug in your bed, sawing logs. What you need is an ever-vigilant cyborg who never sleeps to sit in front of your server all night, but as SkyNet is not live yet, you can settle for the next-best thing. Windows provides performance counters and alerts that can tell you when an applicaiton reaches an unacceptable threshold of naughty behavior, but although it can tattle on your brainchild, it won't be the child psychiatrist that you need to tell you why he's pulling your server's pigtails and pulling faces at the teacher. What you need is to plug a debugger into performance monitor and have it tell you what's going on with your applicaiton at the time. For this purpose, I'd used Microsoft's MDbgEngine as the basis for an applicaiton that will dump a program's stacks, I call it Application Slicer Dicer Wonder Dumper Super Cyborg, or StackOMatic for short. StackOMatic can look at a program's behavior and tell you if the stacks are not moving, but it can also work on the command-line to dump all managed methods on the stack at will. Now that there is a command you can use to dump the stacks, all you need to do is politely tell Windows to run it when you're displeased with your creation as it's trashing the CPU of your server at 3 AM. The first step is to create a scheduled task to tell StackOMatic to dump your applicaiton. Start Task Scheduler and right-click Task Scheduler Library and then Create Task. For this exercise I'm creating a task that will dump the Red Gate SQL Monitor Base Monitor Service. In the Actions tab, I enter the path to StackOMatic and use the arguments to log the stack dump to a file: /PN:RedGate.Response.Engine.Alerting.Base.Service /OUT:c:\users\administrator\MonitorLog.txt Next, I go into Windows Server 2008's Reliability and Performance Monitor and add a new Data Collector Set. This set will produce an alert on the %Processor Time for the service. When the processor time breaches 50%, it will run the StackDumpBaseService task I created. Whenever the service misbehaves, it will append to the log file. Now when I go to work in the morning, I can see what the service was doing when it overloaded the processor and take action.

  • Is Ubuntu recognizing and/or using my NVIDIA graphics card?

    This is my first post here, and I'm pretty new to Ubuntu/Linux. I currently have no other OS except for Ubuntu 13.10. (I used to have Win7 until i got a new terabyte hard drive). My current PC build, if any of this helps: CPU: Intel i5 quad-core Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 RAM: 8 GB HDD: 1 TB SATA 3 Motherboard: MSi Z77 A-G41 OS Ubuntu 13.10 So I recently installed Ubuntu 13.10 and put Steam on it, and I'm seeing that my games run a lot slower than they did when I had Win7. I figured it was a graphics problem, so I checked System Settings Details Overview. It says in "Graphics" that I have "Gallium 0.4 on NVE7" (don't really know what that is). Does this mean that Ubuntu is not using my graphics card? In System Settings Software & Updates Additional Drivers, it clearly shows like this: NVIDIA Corporation: GK107 [GeForce GTX 650] -This device is using an alternative driver (And then it shows a list of drivers that I can switch back and forth to) So this is a bit confusing. In Software and Updates, it clearly shows that I have my NVIDIA card installed, and that I have a driver selected for it. But in System Settings, it shows I have some Gallium 0.4 thing. I had done a bit of research, and ended up typing command: "lspci|grep VGA" in the Terminal. It showed this in response: VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107 [GeForce GTX 650] (rev a1) The Terminal seems to recognize my graphics card. What it looks like to me, is that I don't have the proper driver, and I might be using my CPU's integrated graphics. When I switch around which driver I am using in that list, it still does not see my card in System Settings. Some of the drivers in the list give me some sort of OpenGL error when I try to run a game. It might just be that my games are running slow because the game developers have not optimized it for Ubuntu that well. However, that still doesn't take away from the fact that System Settings is not showing my NVIDIA card. TL;DR Version: How do I know if my video card is being recognized/used? If my video card is not being used, what is the best way fix that? Please make your answers easy to understand. I do not mind wordy responses, as long as I can follow what you're saying.   • What is the right way to group this project into classes?

    I originally asked this on SO, where it was closed and recommended that I ask it here instead. I'm trying to figure out how to group all the functions necessary for my project into classes. The goal of the project is to execute the following process: Get the user's FTP credentials (username & password). Check to make sure the credentials establish a valid connection to the FTP server. Query several Sharepoint lists and join the results of those queries to create a list of items that need to have action taken on them. Each item in the list has a folder. For each item: Zip the contents of the folder. Upload the folder to the FTP server using SFTP Update the item's Sharepoint data. Email the user an Excel report showing, e.g., Items without folder paths Items that failed to zip or upload Steps 2-5 are performed on a periodic basis; if step 2 returns an invalid connection, the user is alerted and the process returns to step 1. If at any point the user presses a certain key, the process terminates. I've defined the following set of classes, each of which is in its own .cs file: SFTP: file transfer processes DataHandler: Sharepoint data retrieval/querying/updating processes. Also makes and uploads the zip files. Exceptions: Not just one class, this is the .cs file where I have all of my exception classes. Report: Builds and sends the report. Program: The main class for running the program. I recognize that the DataHandler class is a god object, but I don't have a good idea of how to refactor it. I feel like it should be more fine-grained than just breaking it into Sharepoint, Zip, and Upload, but maybe that's it. Also, I haven't yet worked out how to combine the periodic behavior with the "wait for user input at any point in the process" part; I think that involves threads, which means other classes to manage the threads... I'm not that well-versed in design patterns, but is there one that fits this project well? If this is too big of a topic to neatly explain in an SO answer, I'll also accept a link to a good tutorial on what I'm trying to do here.

  • Reasons NOT to use JSF [closed]

    I am new to StackExchange, but I figured you would be able to help me. We're crating a new Java Enterprise application, replacing an legacy JSP solution. Due to many many changes, the UI and parts of the business logic will completely be rethought and reimplemented. Our first thought was JSF, as it is the standard in Java EE. At first I had a good impression. But now I am trying to implement a functional prototype, and have some really serious concerns about using it. First of all, it creates the worst, most cluttered invalid pseudo-HTML/CSS/JS mix I've ever seen. It violates every single rule I learned in web-development. Furthermore it throws together, what never should be so tightly coupled: Layout, Design, Logic and Communication with the server. I don't see how I would be able to extend this output comfortably, whether styling with CSS, adding UI candy (like configurable hot-keys, drag-and-drop widgets) or whatever. Secondly, it is way too complicated. Its complexity is outstanding. If you ask me, it's a poor abstraction of basic web technologies, crippled and useless in the end. What benefits do I have? None, if you think about. Hundreds of components? I see ten-thousands of HTML/CSS snippets, ten-thousands of JavaScript snippets and thousands of jQuery plug-ins in addition. It solves really many problems - we wouldn't have if we wouldn't use JSF. Or the front-controller pattern at all. And Lastly, I think we will have to start over in, say 2 years. I don't see how I can implement all of our first GUI mock-up (Besides; we have no JSF Expert in our team). Maybe we could hack it together somehow. And then there will be more. I'm sure we could hack our hack. But at some point, we'll be stuck. Due to everything above the service tier is in control of JSF. And we will have to start over. My suggestion would be to implement a REST api, using JAX-RS. Then create a HTML5/Javascript client with client side MVC. (or some flavor of MVC..) By the way; we will need the REST api anyway, as we are developing a partial Android front-end, too. I doubt, that JSF is the best solution nowadays. As the Internet is evolving, I really don't see why we should use this 'rake'. Now, what are pros/cons? How can I emphasize my point to not use JSF? What are strong points to use JSF over my suggestion?

  • MVC Can the model know ANYTHING about the view?

    I'm working on a game, and without getting into any details I am using MVC "patterns", "rules" or whatever you want to call it to make the game. The view includes everything needed to draw things on the screen, the controller passes input to the model. And the Model contains game logic. Here's my problem, the game is being made for mobile devices that vary in screen sizes. I feel my model needs to know the view size so it can appropriately adjust for it. I've thought about it for a while I could put all the adjustments in the view, but it just seems inefficient to translate the model positioning to the view's needed positioning every time. If the model knows the size it only needed to adjust itself once. So my question is can I pass the view size to the model without 'breaking' MVC? I feel personally they are still decoupled this way because a size is just a number, I could still change the view any time as long as it has a size. But I wanted to get a community response on this because I haven't seen many discussions of MVC being used in a game. (And to be clear I don't want an answer of why I shouldn't use it in a game, but do I break MVC by letting it know the view's size) EDIT - More details on the game's needs and why I wanted to pass the view. Some objects positions need to be set relative to the edge of the screen (such as UI elements) so that they appear relatively in the same place. Sprite sizes are not stretched if the window size is wider such as an IPhone 5 screen. They will just be placed relatively to the screen edge. .If I gave it to the view to handle this, I will need a flag saying that this element is positioned say x number of pixels from TOP BOTTOM RIGHT LEFT. Then allow the view to draw it with that information. Its acceptable, I just wanted to know if there was a better way while still being MVC because it seems this way will be repeating a logic over and over, where as if I knew the view size in the model, I could convert all the relative positions into absolute positions in one run, but with this I have to convert on every update to the screen.

  • ant ftp doesn't download files in subdirectories

    Hello, I'm trying to download files in subdirectories from an ftp server with ant. The exact set of files is known. Some of them are in subdirectories. Ant only seems to download the ones in the root directory. It does work if I download all files without listing them. The first ftp action should do the exact same thing as the second. Instead it complains about "Hidden files" and seems to prefix the paths with "\\". Does anyone know what's wrong here?     I decided to try this suggestion to install Android x86 on Virtual Box. I'm following those steps and I'm at #4. I used the android-x86-4.0-RC1-amd_brazos.iso (because I have a ThinkPad that this might be compatible with and it seemed as good as any of the other choices...) For storage, I made a VDI image sized at 4.0 GB (dynamically allocated) attached on SATA Port 0. Background and more details: I'm running Kubuntu 12.04. I installed VirtualBox 4.1.12 after adding deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian precise contrib to my sources. EDIT: Now I'm wondering if I installed the right package. I verified that I'm running 4.1.12. But I installed it with apt-get install virtualbox instead of the recommended apt-get install virtualbox-4.1. I checked just now and see this: apt-cache search virtualbox virtualbox - x86 virtualization solution - base binaries virtualbox-4.1 - Oracle VM VirtualBox But when I run VirtualBox, I get the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager version 4.1.12, so I think I'm OK. I did see one minor issue (possibly related to this question) when installing VB, but in my case I don't think it is actually an error at all: * No suitable module for running kernel found [fail] invoke-rc.d: initscript virtualbox, action "restart" failed. VirtualBox installed and seems to be running fine. I just can't get the ISO image to install. The error is as shown above.

  • MS NPS denying access, can't validate server certificate

    At my office we use a Cisco WLC2504 wireless controller and starting about a week ago we started having problems with users connecting to one of our secure wireless network. We are running AD on Windows Server 2008 R2 and use network policy server to control access to our wireless network. When I look at the logs in event viewer after a failed connection attempt I see an access reject message: Reason Code: 262 Reason: The supplied message is incomplete. The signature was not verified. Looking this up on Google I found this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838502 I tried disabling server certificate validation on my computer and as soon as I did that I was able to connect to the network, so it seems that there is some sort of certificate validation issue. I'm not sure which certificate is unable to be validated or how to fix it. This used to work and stopped suddenly by itself so I am thinking a certificate may have expired. When I go to NPS Policies Network Policies My policy Constraints Auth methods Microsoft PEAP and view the properties, the certificae specified here expires in 2016, so doesn't seem as though this could be the problem. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this issue?

    I'm in trouble... Server: HP Microserver N36L Storage: HP P212/256 with BBWC Drives: 4 WD 2 Tb While expanding the RAID 5 array from 3 to 4 drives, the server rebooted itself. Expansion was at 76%. Now at boot the P212 seems to hang on initializing. After some time screen resets and the server boots, but in the os (Windows Server 2008R2) the P212 has errors (error code 10) and it's not seen by the HP ACU. Whats' going on? It's trying to complete the expansion? It's trying to make all over the expansion? It's simply stuck? What should I do? I NEED the data on the array! PS In the server BIOS, on the hd boot priority, the server still reports the array logical drive... maybe it's a good sign... PPS I'm not at the server physical location, so I cannot tell if the drives in the array are being accessed (that would be the case if the controller it's redoing/completing the expansion process) or not right now.     I have serious problems setting up port forwarding on a Fortigate 50B. The unit is basically running as factory default, the wan1 interface is connected to my fibre optic internet modem, and my lan is connected to the internal switch of the Fortigate. The factory default firewall policy allowing traffic from the internal interface to wan1 is kept and I'm able to access the interet as normal. Then I added a virtual ip and a firewall policy for allowing access from the internet to my local servers (ip 192.168.9.51) webserver (standard port 80). The settings I made are as follows. Edit Virtual IP Mapping Name : Server VIP External interface : wan1 Type : Static NAT Extermal IP Address/Range : 0.0.0.0 Mapped IP Address/Range : 192.168.9.51 Port Forwading : not checked Firewall policy Source interface/Zone : wan1 Source address : all Destination interface/Zone : internal Destination address : Server VIP Schedule : always Service : HTTP Action : ACCEPT no other settings checked What happens now is that I'm unable to access internet from my server, I'm not getting through to the webserver from internet either. I'm able to ping a site on the outside, but all web traffic is blocked, both ways. I've checked the documentation, but as far as I can tell I have set this up correctly. Anyone here with knowledge of Fortigate port forwading/NAT?

  • Outlook 2007 unable to connect to exchange server

    I came into the office a week ago and outlook has refused to connect ever since, it just says "Disconnected" in the bottom right-hand corner. I've tried restarting it, rebooting Windows etc. I'm the only one if our office who is having this problem, so it's not a general problem with the server. Things I've tried Pinging the server via IP address and host name, both work fine Connecting via OWA, this works using the same machine name Connecting to Exchange via HTTP ("Outlook Anywhere") doesn't work None of the suggestions in this question helped, http://serverfault.com/questions/21755/can-ping-exchange-server-cant-connect-outlook-to-it Disabling Windows firewall on my laptop also has no effect. There are no items in the event viewer that indicate that anything it up. Also no permissions have changed on the server since when it worked. Update: I've just tried logging onto a completely different PC, using my domain controller user-name/password. When I setup outlook on there it also fails, so the problem isn't specific to 1 pc/outlook it's something about my particular user name, but not when using OWA? What else can I do to diagnose this, any suggestions?

Pertinent Information We have multiple domains hooked up to our Exchange server. We changed our company name in January of this year, and the old primary domain (olddomain.com) will accept e-mails from Hotmail accounts, however e-mails sent to the new primary domain (newdomain.com) bounce back with the NDR listed above. The bounces only appear to be happening when the Hotmail sender is sending a new e-mail, and not if they are responding to an e-mail sent from our end. We have made no changes to the configuration of our server recently. This e-mail first appeared last Friday. As far as I can tell, the mail doesn't even seem to get to our server We performed an Exchange 2003 to 2010 migration last year. The 2003 acts as a Smart Host Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated! I'm at a loss

  • Windows 7 intermittently drops wired internet/lan connection.

    In a nutshell, my Windows 7 Ultimate PC intermittently drops it's internet connection. Why? Background: My PC is wired to my ADSL modem/router which is directly connected to the phone line. I also have wireless connectivity turned on within the router for a laptop to connect wirelessly. Every few hours or so, when using my PC, I find I cannot access the internet and pages will not load. Eventually, Windows7 will update the network icon in the task-tray to show the exclamation mark symbol on the network icon. Opening up the Network And Sharing Centre will show the red cross between the "Multiple Networks" and "The Internet". Here's a picture of the "Network And Sharing Centre" (grabbed when everything was working!) As you can see, I'm running Sun's VirtualBox on this machine and that creates a Network connection for itself. This doesn't seem to affect the intermittent dropping (i.e. the intermittent drops occur whether the VirtualBox connection is in use or not). When the connection does drop, I cannot access any internet pages, nor can I access the router's web admin page at http://192.168.1.1/, so I'm assuming I've lost all local LAN access too. It's definitely not the router (or the internet connection itself) as my laptop, using the wireless connection (and running Vista Home Premium) continues to be able to access the internet (and the router's web admin pages) just fine. Every time this happens, I can immediately restore all internet and LAN access by opening Network Adapter page, disabling the "Local Area Connection" and then re-enabling it. Give it a few seconds and everything is fine again. I assume this is because, beneath the GUI, it's effectively doing an "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew". Why does this happen in the first place, though? I've googled for this and seen quite a few other people (even on MSDN/Technet forums) experiencing the same or almost the same problem, but with no clear resolution. Suggestions of turning off IPv6 on the LAN adapter, and ensuring there's no power management "sleeping" the network adapter have been tried but do not cure the problem. There does not seem to be any particular sequence of events that cause it to happen either. I've had it go twice in 20 minutes when just randomly browsing the web with no other traffic, and I've also had it go once then not go again for 2-3 hours with the same sort of usage. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how to make it stop? EDIT: Additional information based upon the answer provided so far: Firstly, I forgot the mention that this is Windows 7 64 bit if that makes any difference at all. I mentioned that I don't think the VirtualBox network adpater is causing this problem in any way, and I also have VirtualBox installed on two other machines, one running Vista Home Premium and the other running XP. Neither of these machine experience the same network connectivity issues as the Windows 7 machine. The IP assignment for the Windows 7 machine is the same both before and after the "drop". I have a DHCP server on the router issuing IP Addresses, however my Windows 7 machine uses a static address. The network adapter chipset is Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller and I have confirmed that this is the correct chipset for the motherboard (Asus M4A77TD PRO), and in fact, Windows Update installed an updated driver for this on 12/Jan/2009. The details of the update say that it's a Realtek software update from December 2009. Incidentally, I was still having the same intermittent problems prior to this update. It seems to have made no difference at all. EDIT 2 (1 Feb 2010): In my quest to solve this problem, I have discovered some more interesting information. On another forum, someone suggested that I should try running Windows in "Safe Mode With Networking" and see if the problem continues to occur. This was a fantastic suggestion and I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner myself. So, I proceeded to run in Safe Mode with Networking for a number of hours, and amazingly, the "drops" didn't occur once. It was a positive discovery, however, due to the intermittent nature of the original problem, I wasn't completely convinced that the problem was cured. One thing I did note is that the fan on my GFX card was running alot louder than normal. This is due to the fact that I have an ASUS ENGTS250 graphics card (http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=B6imcoax3MRY42f3) which had a known problem with a noisy fan until a BIOS update fixed the issue. (See the "Manufacturer Response" here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121334 for details). Well, running in safe mode had the fan running (incorrectly) at full speed (as it did before the BIOS update), but with an (apparently) stable network connection. Obviously some driver was not loaded for the GFX card when in Safe Mode so this got me thinking about the GFX card (since the very noisy fan was quite obvious when running in Safe Mode). I rebooted into normal mode, and found that Nvidia had a very up-to-date new driver for my GFX card (only about 1 week old), so I downloaded the appropriate driver and installed it. After installation and a reboot, I was able to use my PC for an entire day with NO NETWORK DROPS!!! This was on Saturday. However, on the Sunday, I also had my PC for pretty much the entire day and experienced 2 network drops. No other changes have been made to my PC in this time. So, the story seems to be that updating my graphics card drivers seems to have improved (if not completely fixed) the issue, however, I'm still searching for a proper fix for this problem. Hopefully, this information may help anyone who may have additional ideas as to why this problem is occuring in the first place. (And why does new GFX card drivers have anything to do with the network?) I appreciate everyone's feedback so far. However, I'll have to ask once more if anyone has any further ideas of how to fix this particular problem? Thanks in advance.
