• SQL Server 2008 EF 4 - limiting database records returned using permissions?

  In our database all tables are linked back to a single table. This table has a bit column to limit whether the record is displayed. Currently the records are filtered on the code side of the website. Is there any way to set up permission so that userA would never see any record in the database where that common bit column was set to true? We are using SQL Server 2008. Alternatively we are also using entity framework 4.0 in .net 4 (in c#) if you have any ideas how it might be accomplished there? Thanks for your feedback.

  Greetings, stack*overflow* In my database, I already have one table, 'contacts' that contains records of individual people. I also have several other tables in my database which represent "skill sets" that contain records denoting a particular skill. 1) Am I correct in plotting this as a "many-to-many" relationship? (each contact can have multiple skill sets, and each skill set can belong to multiple contacts) 2) I'm new to databases -- do I want to link the tables? 3) Is there a way to implement this in my program (C# + windows forms) such that for any given record in the 'contacts' table, either the names of all associated 'skill set' tables or all the 'skill' records associated with the 'contact' record could be retrieved?   I need a comparison table of some sort for database varieties (MySQL, SQLite etc.). I can't find one. My use case is, I am implementing storage of objects in a distributed hash table. I need a database solution that is: Fast for sorting Simplistic (no users, preferably no additional structures like multiple tables etc.) Concurrent (if possible) Multi-platform File based (not stored in memory primarily) Centralized I will be programming in Go. As I understand, I believe I need what is called a Document Orientated Database, because I am storing objects, identified by keys. EDIT: While I am implementing a DHT, I will also be storing metadata about the objects, such as access counts etc. It would also be preferable to have TLL (time to live)

  So I do this to retrieve my entire table: $result = mysql_query( 'SELECT * FROM mytable' ); Then, in another part of my PHP-page, I do another query (for a specific row): $result2 = mysql_query( 'SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE id = ' . $id ); $row = mysql_fetch_array( $result2 ); So, I'm performing two querys. However, I don't really have to do that, do I? I mean, the row that I'm retrieving in my second query already is present in $result (the result of my first query), since it contains my entire table. Therefore, instead of doing the second query, I would like to extract the desired row from $result directly (while keeping $result itself in tact). How would I do that?   I'd like to navigate images using both keyboard and mouse (clicking left and right arrow images). I'm using Jquery to do this, but the shared imgIndex seems to be off from the .keydown function and the .click function... Whenever .keydown function -- or ++ the imgIndex, isn't that changed index also used in the click function?   I have this JTable on my Swing app with the autoCreateRowSorter enabled. My table only has 3 columns, two strings and one int, it works well for all of them when I click the column headers. However, I'm looking for way to do it programatically. I wanted to set the "initial state" for this table. With the Windows look and feel, the column header (when sorted) has a little arrow showing the sort order. But at startup that doesn't show, I have to do one initial click. How can I do that by code?

In database i have a history table for old BookedResource and it can happen that the user want to look at these and to get the old data from the database entity framework uses classes with the same name as the tables to receive data from db. So i receive the data from table HistoryBookedResource in HistoryBookedResource class. Because entity framework generate the partial classes with the properties i dont know if i can make them virtual and override. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

  Usually when looking for some items not showing up in the other table, we can use: select * from gifts where giftID not in (select giftID from sentgifts); or select * from gifts where giftID not in (select distinct giftID from sentgifts); the second line is with "distinct" added, so that the resulting table is smaller, and probably let the search for "not in" faster too. So, won't using "distinct" be desirable? Often than not, I don't see it being used in the subquery in such a case. Is there advantage or disadvantage of using it? thanks.

• Wrong data retrieved from database

  So, I want to retrieve the order of the elements of a list. The order is set before by the user, and are stored in the table below. Because I also want to retrieve name and description of the list elements I need to combine two tables (see below). However, what is actually retrieved is an array containing 16 elements (should be four because it only exists four elements as for now). I don't know why since my model association are well defined and the event table has the foreign keys for the user table.   I have an incredibly simple query (table type InnoDb) and EXPLAIN says that MySQL must do an extra pass to find out how to retrieve the rows in sorted order. SELECT * FROM `comments` WHERE (commentable_id = 1976) ORDER BY created_at desc LIMIT 0, 5 exact explain output: table select_type type extra possible_keys key key length ref rows comments simple ref using where; using filesort common_lookups common_lookups 5 const 89 commentable_id is indexed. Comments has nothing trick in it, just a content field. The manual suggests that if the order by is different to the where, there is no way filesort can be avoided. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/order-by-optimization.html I also tried order by id as well as it's equivalent but makes no difference, even if I add id as an index (which I understand is not required as id is indexed implicitly in MySQL). thanks in advance for any ideas!

  Hi There, We have an old ASPsite that has been working fine for years with a MY SQL database. All of a sudden last week lots fo SQL queries stopped working. The database has a table called 'members' but the code calls 'Members'. It appears the queries used to work regardless of case sensitivity on the table names, but something has changed recently somewhere to enforce case. This has me stumped as the site has not been touched in years, the server config hasn't changed & the database provide has not changed anything. Is there any simple way to ignore case for an ASP site (without editing lots fo files :) Thanks Ben
