• How can I configure Firefox to assume I have less memory?

  Firefox has a few different settings that automatically get tuned based on the system ram. This is all great if you're running nothing besides Firefox, but when you're running half a dozen apps at the same time and they all assume that they can take a decent chunk of mem it just kills the box. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with Firefox 14 Current workarounds: Running a Windows XP virtual machine with 512MB of ram. It actually runs smooth and takes less memory (including Windows) to run than having Firefox (or Chrome for that matter) run standalone. Install the 32 bit version of Firefox By installing the 32 bit version of firefox (apt-get install firefox:i386) the base memory usage is only about 50% of what it is with the 64 bit.

• What to do with a Blowfish Key?

  I just completed backing up 8 years of my Gmail using http://gmvault.org I selected the --encrypt option which uses Blowfish encryption. According to their site: Emails can be encrypted with the option -e --encrypt. With that option, the Blowfish encryption is used to crypt your emails and chats and the first time you activate it, a secret key is randomly generated and stored in $HOME/.gmvault/token.sec. Keep great care of the secret key as if you loose or delete it your stored emails won't be readable anymore !!! I'm using OSX Lion. I'm a software engineer but far from an encryption expert. What should I do with this key? It seems like leaving it where it is now (alongside the emails) sort of misses the point of encrypting them to begin with.

• VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED when trying to create a windows 8 image in Virtualbox

  I'm trying to create a Virtualbox image of windows 8 consumer preview. I tried this tutorial: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-install-windows-8-on-virtualbox/ I did exactly what was said in that tutorial. At the step "Now navigate to the Windows 8 developer build ISO file that you downloaded and select it." I get the error "Could not get the storage format. (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED)". I also get this if I use the regular wizard. Host OS: windows 7 Virtualbox version: 4.1.16 Both windows 8 64 bit and 32 bit tested.

• Bluetooth Headset pairs and appears in Sound Devices, but shows as Disconnected?

  I recently got a TrueBlue TB-100T3 and tried pairing it with my computer (Windows 7 64-bit). At first it paired but would not appear under Sound Devices. I updated my Broadcom Bluetooth drivers here: http://www.broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php Now my headset appears in both Playback and Recording, but shows as Disconnected. The device is on, paired, and appears under Device Manager as having no problems. I right-clicked and installed both the Hands-free Telephony and Headset services.   Hi, I recently updated my nexus one to 2.2. Now I can't connect to my uni's wifi. They use PEAP with GTC. I had it working fine on 2.1. Also it works fine on my Ubuntu laptop. I have entered my uni number (user name) in the identity box. I have entered my password in the password box. I have emailed the certificated that works on Ubuntu to my self and installed it on the nexus one. I have enabled secure credentials. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Glen.

• Client has been through 3 PSUs, now what?

  A client of mine has an XP era eMachines. The power supply has died and been replaced 3 times. I've discharged the motherboard and checked the surge protector. In the middle of a scan with ComboFix, the machine died. It powers on and hangs before the BIOS and shows a solid yellow light. I believe the model # is T5062 or something like that.

• Can't rename/move files from OSX that were copied from NTFS

  Hello- I recently had data recovered and it was sent back to me on what I think is an NTFS drive. I copied all the files over to a file share I have on a Linux box, that's ext4. Now I have that share mounted on my OSX machine, and I can't move or rename most of the files. However, in a couple cases I was able to rename a folder after the third try. Another time I was able to rename a folder once, but not again. All the permissions are showing up the same on the command-line -- I can't see any differences between the permissions on any of the files/folders. Any clues??? Thanks.

• Is Steam for Mac effectively running as superuser?

  When you download the client it does not weigh too much, and seems to do very little. Inside the app bundle there is a script that—upon inspecting the environment and deciding you're not running Linux—launches the client, which downloads the full support environment and resources. For this to happen (all of this is saved inside the bundle, the app bundle gets updated in this process) Steam wants Universal Access for Assistive Devices, and your password. Cacheable resources, preferences (like keyboard shortcuts), support files (like game hardware requirement lookup tables) live inside the bundle, not in ~/Library/{Application Support|Preferences|Cache}; games' data get dumped into ~/Documents/Steam Content. I'd describe myself as a bit OCD (which really says a lot), and I wouldn't care that much still. I'd go comb this hairy mess and find out where stuff is, when and if I need to, even if it's in an unfamiliar place; that does not actually tick me off. Well, a little bit. What makes me concerned is the way Steam needs both Access for Assistive Devices, and my password to run. The former gives it the ability to talk very intimately with running apps and the underlying system; while the latter (admin account) could very well give it and it's publishers unrestricted access to all my software, hardware and data. With publishers like Rockstar using scene NOCD cracks to publish their games on Steam, I'm not so sure I'm OK with this. I'd like more games made available for the MacOS X and all the pretty machines that run it, but this arrangement does not seem very Mac-like to me. It looks like Valve is going around system security measures and best practices, foregoing sandboxing, code signing, relatively sane structured organization; all the things that would appeal to someone who's no fun at parties at all, and will die alone, in his long dead mother's basement… wait. Right. Anyway. Can we get some input on Steam for Mac security at the end-user machine, from someone who understands how Accessibility API works, whether games distributed on Steam can read and write outside the user homefolder, collect data from other running apps, or similar?

• How do I merge MP4 files without audio going out of sync?

  Is there a tool I can use that can merge MP4 files without throwing the audio out of sync? I generated some MP4 files from a DVD using AVIDemux but whatever tool I try to use always ends up throwing the audio out of sync with the video. The further you get into the video the further off-sync the audio is. By themselves the MP4/AAC videos have perfect audio-video sync. later tonight i might try http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to examine the file before and after to see if anything changed in the media format.

• What is the official installer for Unix packages on Mac OS?

  I'm a bit confused about the installation of standard Unix packages on Mac OS X. For example, I have /usr/bin/svn, which is SVN v.1.4.4, but FinkCommander says svn is not installed. The same holds for other packages, like emacs etc. Is that just a wrong FinkCommander setting? Currently it is set to install everything in /sw, which is not even in the PATH. So, do I just have to set it to install packages to /usr, and it will recognize the installed software? I don't want to install duplicate packages of everything, and it is quite weird that the FinkCommander seems not to be in sync with the installed software. Or is there any other installer I should be using? Is Mac Ports the recommended installer to use? (I'm using Mac OS 10.5.8.)

• How do I configure an ordinary TV remote control to work with lirc on Linux?

  I am running MythTV on Ubuntu 9.10 and I would like to use a TV remote to control it. I know that lirc needs a configuration file for the remote, but none of my remotes is in the official database. If I point a remote at the receiver on my TV card (a Pinnacle PCTV "Solo", model 72e) and press a button, dmesg logs the code generated by the remote, so I assume I just have to make a config file with a list of commands assigned to these codes. I've read a few how-tos but I still don't understand exactly how to create the config file. Some of the guides I've read refer to IR receivers on TV cards working at a "higher level of abstraction", which I take to mean that they decode the signal and provide a code, like the ones I can see in dmesg, rather than just giving raw data, but none of them explain where to go from there! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Sound recognition software

  I'm looking for a software able to recognize an specific sound and then do some action. I want to leave my notebook close by the house intercom so when I hear someone ringing it, a very specific and unique sound, it will send me an email at my office or something. The main issue is that there's a lot of different noises there, but none would be as loud as the intercom for the specific place I've left the microphone. Is there any software out there able to do this? Hopefully with a mac version. I trust there's nothing closely related in this to speech or voice recognition technologies, and specially the softwares in there.

• How do TAB & SHIFT-TAB get reversed in Entourage?

  In Microsoft Entourage, I can use Tab to move the highlighted selection from "Inbox" in the left-hand column: ...to the list of email in my inbox: And Shift-Tab returns the selection to the left-hand column again. But once-in-a-while when I return to Entourage (but never immediately after launching it), Tab and Shift-Tab are reversed. That is, I need to use Shift-Tab to move the highlighted selection to the list of email and Tab to return the selection to the left-hand column. I don't know what causes this, and I find it so annoying that I'll restart Entourage just to restore Tab and Shift-Tab to what my muscle-memory expects. What is causing them to get reversed, and can I un-reverse them without restarting Entourage?

• Synaptics touchpad scroll doesn't work on many applications

  The Synaptics touchpad in my new laptop doesn't scroll at all in a number of applications, including Steam and Zune. I've narrowed the problem down to Synaptics not sending mouse wheel messages, but rather manipulating scroll bars. I'm only looking into one-finger side-of-touchpad scrolling, not two-finger scrolling. Is there a way to make it send wheel messages so that it is compatible with all applications? • Should root ever own files in my (linux) home directory?

  This question started off asking why my history file wasn't working properly. Then I noticed it was -rw------- 1 root root and hadn't been updated since 2012-09-11. I changed the ownership, problem fixed. But now I see some other files are owned by root: .gitconfig .pearrc .viminfo Can I safely change them to be owned by my normal user, not root? I'm scratching my head trying to work out if there is a downside, or a security consequence. Losing seven weeks history is actually quite painful, because I lean on it a lot (e.g. to remind how I last did an archive). Would it be reasonable to set up a cron job to email me if it finds any files in my home directory owned by anyone else but me? Rephrased: is there ever a good reason for root to own a file in my home directory?

• Looking for an application that scrolls or pans netbook screens running Windows

  I'm looking for a Windows 7 and XP compatible Windows desktop panning/scrolling tool. This is to solve a problem where some applications for example MSN have settings/preference Windows that are not resizeable. I have a Netbook with a small maximum screen resolution e.g. 1024x600. The fixed non-resizeable windows are too large for this display screen size so I cannot see all of the items on these windows, particularly the OK button to save settings. What I would like is a desktop scrolling/panning tool where if I move my mouse pointer to any edge of the display, it pans to show the region of the too-large-fixed window that I could not see. I use a Samsung N110 and Toshiba NB100 netbooks. • Win 2k3 - DNS query ?

  I'm learning about network and I configured DNS in 2k3. In forward zone : cntt.edu www.cntt.edu [ 192.168.188.4 ] . [ All IP / DNS configuration is right ] After that I use wireshark to catch packet when I enter www.cntt.edu in IE . I see there's no DNS here, I forward directly to 192.168.188.4, there's no query . • Copying OS X account settings to new user account

  Hi I hope someone can help me... I accidentally renamed my own user name on my mac running OS X 10.4.11 and tried renaming back to what it was but now I have two accounts (the one I want to use which has all my preferences, applications, mail boxes, etc etc) is it possible to copy my settings from my original into this new user name? When I open my computer it defaults to this new account but everything is setting up from new and I just need to get access to all my work documents, mail settings etc. If there is anyone who could help out, I would be very grateful. • Mac: window manager frozen, have ssh access

  I have a Mac which regularly runs into a problem. The user interface stops reponding, showing a "frozen" user interface. The mouse is still moving but clicking does not trigger anything. This happens about once a week. Solution so far is to force switch-off the Mac and reboot it. I have ssh root access to the Mac. Killing (kill -9) the active application has no visible impact on what is shown on the screen. Any ideas on how to diagnose this? Is there a way to restart the window manager from the ssh shell? Killing /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Resources/WindowServer seems not to be possible. The Mac is an early 2008 iMac and runs Lion with latest updates. /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports is empty. Update: Problem stays after update to Mountain Lion. The WindowServer process is in "uninterruptible wait" state ("U" flag in ps output set): imac:~ root# ps ax|awk "NR==1|| /WindowServer/"|grep -v awk PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 86 ?? • Joomla 1.5 Media Manager sets incorrect file permissions when uploading

  Howdy all, I have a Joomla 1.5 installation running on Windows Server 2008, installed via the Web Platform Installer. When uploading images with the media manager (native uploader, not the flash bulk uploader), the files arrive on the server correctly, but are given incorrect permissions. Specifically, the IIS_IUSRS group is not given access to the file. I might be incorrect about what group/user is SUPPOSED to get access to the files, but so far, I've found that unless I give IIS_IUSRS access to the uploaded files, they won't appear on the site or in the media manager (appear as broken images). Once I give IIS_IUSRS permission to the files, they work fine. So far, all the research I've done has led me to linux specific fixes that involve either changing the umask on the server, or directly modifying the Joomla codebase to add an appropriate chmod command to the upload process, but I really don't want to modify Joomla directly. I have to believe there's a setting here somewhere that will do the job, either on the Joomla or Windows side of the equation. Any thoughts? Scott

• Unable to connect to cable modem when connected to VPN

  the scenario is as follows: First I have a cable modem which gives the internet connection. The network is 192.168.0.0/24 and its IP is 192.168.0.1 Second line, I have a router connected to the cable modem. Its "outside" IP is 192.168.0.12. This router creates network 192.168.123.0/24 and its IP there is 192.168.123.254. My computer is wired to the router with IP 192.168.123.126. At this point I am able to access both devices web interfaces by their IPs on a browser (192.168.123.254 for the router and 192.168.0.1 for the cable modem). The problem I have is when I connect to a VPN from the computer. Then I am connected to a second network 10.0.0.0/24 and I get IP 10.0.0.200 (along with 192.168.123.126). I can connect to the router but then I loose connectivity to the cable modem: I cannot acces it through the browser, neither making a ping to it or a tracert. I have tried to add a new route to the windows routes by typing route ADD 192.168.0.1 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.123.254 but I cannot access it anyway... Am I missing something on the route adding? Which is the propper way of doing this? Thanks
