  • How to make PuTTY X11 forwarding work in a screen session?

    I'm using PuTTY with X11 forwarding enabled, using Xming as my X server on Windows 7. When I SSH to a Linux host, X11 forwarding works fine. If I start a "screen" screen manager session, it still works fine. If I disconnect from the screen session, then later resume in a different PuTTY window using "screen -rd", X11 forwarding doesn't work any more - I get an error: xterm X connection to localhost:11.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). This seems to be because $DISPLAY is different in each PuTTY SSH session (localhost:11.0 in the first session, then localhost:12.0 in the next, and so on). If I manually set $DISPLAY to localhost:12.0 in the screen session, X11 forwarding works again. Is there a way to automatically set $DISPLAY in the screen session, each time it's resumed, so that it always matches the parent PuTTY session's?

  • Can't set acl for afs even though i'm in the right group

    I've got a dir that i've lost controll over in an afs system. According to the system adminstrators my adminin subgroup (dsekt:admin) got rlidwka on the dir. I'm a member of this group (and i can list the members of the group and see my nick there) though I can't set the acl's for the dir. The pts: $pts membership dsekt:admin Members of dsekt:admin (id: -6813) are: /.../ taran And my klist. $>klist Credentials cache: FILE:/tmp/krb5cc_56782 Principal: [email protected] Both dsekt:admin and the dir is on the NADA.KTH.SE node.

  • Consolidated queue for video on demand?

    It's great having lots of video on demand options, but actually choosing something to watch is turning into a mess - I have to jump from one website or application to another. I'd like to have a single queue where I can add and prioritize movies and TV I want to watch from any source: iTunes purchases, iTunes rentals, Netflix on demand, Amazon video on demand, Hulu, etc. I'd like the consolidated queue to be accessible from Front Row on my Mac Mini. Does such a thing exist?

    I recently purchased and installed a MS-7050 v. 1.3 motherboard into a regular non-HP case and thus the front panel connectors are different than the original OEM connectors which are all bundled together. The HP support website does not have this information available and someone from HP indicated in response to a support forum question that this information is not available. What is the motherboard pin schematic for the front panel i/o connectors (power, reset, hdd led, and power led)?

  • How to play an MKV 3D side-by-side video?

    I have a video in Matroska format (MKV, file extension .mkv), 3D half-SBS, where the 1280x720 frame shows the left-eye frame on the left and the right-eye frame on the right. I don't have a 3DTV, but I have NVidia 3D Vision: I tried to open it with PowerDVD 10 with no result (program hangs). With the same PowerDVD, I tried to play the Avatar 3D trailer downloaded from YouTube (MP4 format), but it now shows it the two frames. PowerDVD 10 is advertised to support 3D and 3D Vision. Why can't I play these videos? NVidia Stereoscopic player plays the Avatar trailer fine, but it doesn't support MKV.

What confuses me, is that when I use something special (like two finger scroll) in guest OS, I can see the cursor change to the scrolling one.   • Windows XP error message: "Windows cannot find 'explorer.exe'"

    In Windows XP I can open "My Computer" and see all the hard drives. I can also see the explorer.exe process running among other processes in Task Manager. But after opening "My Computer", when I double click on one of the drives to open it, I get the following error message: Windows cannot find 'explorer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search. Although I could detect and remove several suspicious files using Malwarebytes & Microsoft Security Essentials, the problem still remains. The interesting point is that if I right click on one folder and select Open or Explore from the menu bar, I can open the folder! but if I double click on the folder, it does not open and I get the above error message. How can I fix this problem? Any advice would be appreciated! Update: I formatted the C: drive (NTFS), a deep format, and installed a fresh Windows XP on it. I am not getting this error when I double click on C drive icon anymore. But the same error appears when I double click on other drive names. Maybe I should format them too!

  • Smartphone Emulator for checking emails are readable

    Is there an emulator that would enable me to test the appearance of an email as it is being read on a smartphone (without specifying the phone type)? What I would like to be able to do, is to send an email to this emulator, and then scroll down through the email using the emulator. Ive searched online, and any emulators I found are for testing software rather than exploring the visual appearance of email. I'm using Mac OSX - thanks in advance.

  • Can I "reprogram" an American Express USB drive?

    I recently received a USB drive that looks like a credit card as a promotion. The drive portion flips out to plug it in. When you plug it in, it opens the run dialog, and opens a URL to an American Express web page. I was able to find it in the Device Manager: But I don't know what else to do? Is there a way I can convert this into a plain old USB drive? Or better yet, can I modify the command that it runs when inserted into a computer?

I called their technical support and they ask me to install PPTP (I have forgot the exact name) and then provide our server name, my username and passowrd. I downloaded(from windows internet) PPTP debian and install it but I did not find it after installation.   • Dell PR03X port replicator and DisplayPort to DVI adapter not detecting second monitor

    Hi, I have a dell M4400 connected to a PR03X port replicator/docking station. I use the DVI port to connect it to a first Dell 2208WFP monitor and I'm trying to use a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter to connect it to a second Dell 2208WFP monitor. The second monitor, connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter immediately goes into sleep mode and the laptop doesn't detect it. What is really weird is that it did detect it the first time I plugged it in but after I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in it stopped working. I swapped the monitors round and it detected them both but after unplugging the monitor connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI and plugging it in again it stopped working. Both monitors work if plugged in directly to the DVI port. Is there some way to force re-detection? Any ideas? Thanks, Mark

    I'm not a Windows SuperUser, but neither just the regular user. I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems. I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows? Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills. I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally.   • Intel Rapid Storage / Smart Response SSD caching issue

    Background Recently built my own PC. It works! Almost. It's been a while since getting into the guts of these things, so I'm familiar but may be missing something simple. FYI, I don't care about blowing the OS away -- it's brand new and we can go back from scratch as many times as necessary. Goal / Issue I'd like to use the SSD to take advantage of Intel's Smart Response technology (allows the SSD to act as a cache for HDDs) I would like the SSD cache to act as a cache for my HDDs, which I would like to be in a RAID1 array (so I get the speed from the SSD and the redundancy from the RAID1) However, Windows only sees the drive in device manager (not as a drive), so I'm unsure what to do about that. Related: as far as I know, for this to work, the drives all have to be in a single RAID array (i.e. a RAID0 pairing of the SSD and the RAID1 HDD array). However, when attempting this at the BIOS level, I am told there is not enough space for an array. Steps so Far Moved the SSD onto the Intel controller (I'd had it on the Marvel 6.0 controller instead of the Intel controller, so the BIOS was only seeing it in a strange way) Updated the BIOS of the motherboard to the latest version Reinstalled Intel's RST (iRST?) software several times, as some forums reported it working after reinstalling 3 times (which does not inspire confidence). Checked Intel storage: it does see the SSD as a physical, non-RAID device. However, it says no space exists if I try to create an array. Checked the BIOS: it does not show up in the boot order, but is an option that can be selected under boot options. Tried the firmware update for that model. Issue: the firmware CD doesn't detect a drive; maybe the Intel storage controller is making it difficult? moved the ssd to the marvel controller. The firmware update cd appeared to hang while searching for drives. swapped out the SATA cable for the manufacturer's and moved back to the intel storage controller. Noticed at this point that in the Intel RST software, a device DOES show up in addition to the RAID set -- only shown as a "60 GB internal disk". Windows doesn't appear to see it as a drive, but it does still show in device manager. Move SSD to port from 0-3 on MOBO and set SATA mode to IDE (after disconnecting RAID1 config) to allow the firmware update to work. Firmware was already at the latest version. Next Steps ? Components involved ASUS P8Z68-V PRO motherboard (Intel Z68 Chipset) Intel i7 2600k Processor 2 x 1TB 7200 RPM HDDs 64 GB Crucial M4 SSD (M4-CT064M4SSD2) For Reference -- Storage Configuration Intel 3 gbps Intel 3gbps Intel 6gbps Marvel 6gbps +----------+ +----------+ +----------+ +----------+ | | <----+ | | +-+ | | | |----------| | |----------| |-|--------| |----------| | | | | + | | | | | | +----------+ | +--|-------+ +-|--------+ +----------+ | | | + v v | 1 TB HDD 64 GB SSD + +> 1 TB HDD For Reference -- Intel RST (v10.8.0.1003) Screenshot Don't mind the "rebuilding" -- knocked a power cable out at one point; it's doing its job, not an indicator of a bad HDD.   • Going to directory using bash variables doesn't work when directory names have spaces

    Let's say I want to store the following command in a variable cd "/cygdrive/c/Program Files/" So I do this dir="cd \"/cygdrive/c/Program Files/\"" That should store the command to navigate to the Program Files directory, so when I type $dir it takes me to that directory. To check that the quotations have been properly escaped, I type echo $dir which gives me cd "/cygdrive/c/Program Files/" So everything should be working fine. However, when I type, $dir I get bash: cd: "/cygdrive/c/Program: No such file or directory What am I doing wrong? I'm using Cygwin, but I assume this problem applies to bash in general.

    We're using Ubuntu 12.04.1 with Xfce 4.8. We have a script which sets environment variables needed by our software. In the past, I figured out how to run this script in the Xfce start up so that these environment variables are set up and available to gui based programs launched via icons. Recently an OS upgrade wiped out this setting and I can't remember or find how to do this. I've tried sourcing the script from ~/.profile, ~/.xinitrc, and ~/.config/xfce4/xinitrc, but no luck.

  • Connecting mother board, power supply, and tower

    I am working on putting together a desktop for the first time and and ran into a problem, I am not sure how to connect the fans that came in my tower, my power supply, and connect them all to the mother board. Tower Mobo Power Supply There are 3 fans in the tower, each have 3 pin male and female connector that come connected, and 4 pin (larger?) male and female connector which are hanging. How would I go about connecting The fans together then to the power supply and mobo so it is easiest control (or suggest me a smart / better option). Pictures are from fans on HAF 922 Tower. Thanks

  • Folder Aliases in Dock or List View cannot be expanded?

    I have been increasingly frustrated with the fact that you cannot expand a folder alias in the Finder "List View" via the "expand triangle" or in the dock. If I add a folder to the dock that contains folders and aliases to other folders, I can drill-down the "real" folders, but cannot on the aliases. Does anyone know a way to make this work?

  • How do you test if a PCI slot is working - motherboard diagnostic software?

    I suspect that my motherboard is bad, and that my PCI-E slot is not working. I have a Gigabyte motherboard that had a Hauppage 2250 working fine in the PCI-E slot for many months. However - recently - would not get TV channels that I used to get --- until finally Media center cant detect any channels at all. Got a new tuner card (ATI 350 card) - cant detect any channels. The cable signal is good - I have it connected directly to a TV - all channels come in clear. SO that is why I suspect a motherboard problem. Are there any motherboard diagnostic scanner utilities that can verify I need a new motherboard
