• Possible boot conflict?

  I was installing Ubuntu on a computer on which Windows XP was already installed. The computer has multiple hard drive bays, so I decided to remove the XP HDD and install Ubuntu on a blank HDD when it was the only HDD in the system. Unfortunately, if I now try to boot Ubuntu with the Windows XP drive in the second slot, nothing will boot. However, if Windows XP is in the first slot, it will boot fine. Can anybody explain why this happens? When I was checking out the BIOS to see if something was messed up, I discovered that when Ubuntu is in the first slot, the BIOS doesn't recognize any HDDs. However, if XP is in the first slot, the BIOS recognizes both drives. Any hypotheses about why this happens? Edit: Here's the setup. I have an old server with seven SCSI HDD slots. I have five identical 68 Gb SCSI drives, but I can keep only two plugged in. XP is still installed on the first drive, but I reinstalled Ubuntu on the second drive and had Grub overwrite the XP bootloader on the first drive. Now, the setup works fine, and I can use Grub to load either XP or Ubuntu. However, if I plug in another identical blank HDD in the third slot, the computer recognizes only the XP drive and doesn't boot. Grub starts to load, then gives me a "disk not found" error. Running ls from the grub rescue prompt only shows one drive with two partitions. I guess this is a BIOS problem, but I'd still like to know what triggers it. What about a blank drive could cause the BIOS to freak out?

• Suggestion for boot manager in external hard disk

  Hi, I just bought an 1TB External Hard drive with eSATA, USB, FW400/800 (LaCie if you are interested). I already put the windows 7 installation in a FAT32 active partition so i can plug the HDD via USB, since my notebook or other computers doesn't support boot via eSATA commonly, and it works. Now i want to do more partitions so i'm looking for a way to have a boot manager as active partitions that allows me to boot from different partitions in my HDD (win7, ubuntu installations for example) I want to know if you know any software to do this or you already have this system. • Wireless technology - which is better: more single radio APs or less dual radio APs?

  We are currently talking to vendors of wireless solutions for a wireless deployment in a university campus with some 5000 students. One vendor is offering us a Cisco solution with a WLC 5508 controller and 69 2x2 MIMO Dual-band/Dual radio APs (Aironet AP 1042 model) The other vendor is offering us an Aruba solution with a 3600 controller and 96 2x2 MIMO dual band BUT single radio APs (Aruba AP93) Both vendors are charging 82.000 US$ (support, 3y service contracts, switches and additional required options all included of course) The Aruba vendor is trying to convince me that 96 single radio APs will give us more connection/users/capacity then the 69 dual radio APs. I have my doubts about that and since it is my core competence-domain I wanted to ask here the opinion of people that have a more profound knowledge and experience in this area. When you talk to vendors it's often hard to get objective information. So try to answer only if you are sure and please mention it if you are affiliated with one of the vendors. • Use one home directory for more than one operating system

  I want to configure the same user account across multiple operating systems. Right now, I'm set up for general use in Mac OS 10.6.6 "Snow Leopard," and I have about 200gb of files in my home directory (/Users/justjake/). I want to use this user (and home directory) for other operating systems on other partitions. For example, I have Mac OS 10.5 installed on a 12gb partition. How can I share permissions, user accounts across my two operating systems? Would moving the my /Users directory from 10.6 to it's own partition then mounting it using /etc/fstab solve my issue?

  Since I have my new computer, I have a very weird problem. Facts: New Computer: Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Pro 3 Graphics-card: Asus1GB D5 X EN GTX560 DCII OC/2DI R CPU: Intel i5-3570 Windows 7 64bit 500W beQuiet special edition (92% efficiency) 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Corsair RAM (CL9) Scythe Mugen 2 2 magnetic HDDs + 1 SDD 1 DVD-R Old Computer: Motherboard: Asus P55 something Graphics-card: Asus1GB D5 X EN GTX560 DCII OC/2DI R CPU: Intel i7-870 Windows 7 64bit 550W Corsair 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Corsair RAM (CL9) Scythe Mugen 3 2 magnetic HDDs + 1 SDD 1 DVD-R On the old computer it worked fine with two monitors. Moving to the new (I took the same Graphics-card) it only works with one. The weird thing I mentioned is: not matter which one. But if I put both there, only one is available. There is no reaction at the start (where normally (at least if I remember correctly) the monitor shortly went from "standby" to "on"). Windows does not recognize a second monitor in the Device Manager. I have the latest drivers for Motherboard and Graphics-card. I have the latest BIOS drivers. I am out of ideas. • Does Windows 7 support multiple simultaneous nVidia graphics cards with different drivers?

  On one of my dev machines at work (currently running XP), I have two nVidia graphics cards: Quadro NVS 440 (my original card, for my three primary monitors) GeForce GTX 275 (just added, for CUDA development) I can get both cards to work OK by installing the latest GeForce drivers, but I get some annoying-but-not-crippling display artifacts on the Quadro's screens (mostly scattered black rectanges where repainting fails for a few bits of UI in certain applications). Under XP, this seems to be the best I can do. I can use Device Manager to supposedly install different nVidia drivers for the two cards (the latest Quadro drivers for the NVS, the latest GeForce drivers for the GTX), but I actually end up with the same driver for both, because the driver dlls all have the same names and get installed on top of one another in the system directory. I have read that Win7 has a new video driver architecture that better supports multiple heterogeneous cards. Does anyone know if that will handle my scenario? If so, it will give me a compelling reason to get that machine on Win7 ASAP.

Also, would you recommend getting a keyboard to use instead of the laptop's one? It seems like it would be awkward otherwise. • MacBook Pro and Backtrack 5R1 Configuration

  I have a Macbook pro Quad core (2.2/8gb ram/750gb hdd). I have went through tons of forums on the Internet, but none of them seemed to be updated for the current Backtrack 5R1, or the question of getting it to correctly work on the MBP. Can anyone help? I don’t have a USB Dongle, and I want to be able to use the internal airport extreme wireless of the MBP to use BT 5R1. I have downloaded Backtrack 5R1 onto VMWare Fusion, and got it up and running, but to no avail. It keeps recognizing my card as a Ethernet connection. Kismac wont recognize the card either. So what I am asking for is this: The proper “download method.” for Backtrack 5R1 to my MacBook Pro. (YES I AM WILLING TO RE-DOWNLOAD BT 5R1). The Complete process from start to finish, UP TO DATE, from someone who has done this using an MBP Running Lion OSX. The proper tweaks, settings, or commands to get my airport extreme wireless card to work (it is BROADCOM 4331 I think). The wireless connection I need to use the tools on both Backtrack 5R1 and Kismac. I mainly need to test WEP cracking on my network for security. The difference between running BT 5R1 on VMWARE Fusion and running from downloading it directly to the MBP, if there is, How to download it directly to the MBP?

• Control which os is booted on multi-boot system

  I am setting up a server with multiple operating systems for the automatic testruns of my company's product. I'd like to be able to control with a script which OS boots up after a restart, so I could say for example "after the windows run, boot into linux". I thought of using the windows bootloader for all OSes, because it should be easy to just change the default entry in C:\boot.ini to whichever system I want to boot. Is this a feasible way of doing this? Are there better options?

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks.

  i have ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 with nvidia 9800 gt and nvidia driver version 270.41.06 my video card has two DVI sockets, but i only use single monitor configuration. Now, i think the main DVI socket might be busted, so i want to try to enable the other as the main one, however, i don't know how to achieve that. I tried just plugging the monitor in that socket but it won't just auto-detect (it would have been way too easy to just work)

• Creating Windows partition in Boot Camp without an install disc

  I have an old Macbook1,1 which has Snow Leopard on it. I'd like to get Win 7 on it by using Boot Camp Assistant, however my superdrive is not working (It just spits out any disc I put in within 10 seconds). I know how to get Win 7 installed by using USB drive, but I still need Boot Camp to create the Windows partition for me. I've made an ISO file of the install disc which I've mounted, but Boot Camp won't pick it up. It seems to only look in the superdrive. How can I get Boot Camp to skip requirement of an install disc? edit: nevermind, as it turns out the partition was already created by the time it asked for the disc!

• Best way to split LAN computers on two WANs (not load balancing)

  What is the best way to split the computers of a LAN (about 50 computers) to go on two WANs, depending on the computers' IP address or computers' configuration (gateway). I'm not looking for load-balancing, I need to be able to route which computer uses which Internet connection. A solution would be to rewire the old office to split the two distinct groups that need to use two different Internet connections but I'm not sure it's worth it at the moment. I have a pfSense router configured with the LAN (DHCP), WAN1 and WAN2. I also have the IP addresses (and ability to configure) the next router on WAN1 and the one on WAN2. What would you suggest? Routing based on IP addresses ranges? Different gateways? VLANs would be difficult for the same reason as to why rewire is a bit complicated. Thanks!

  Dear all, I've some questions regarding basic routing, can't seem to relate to other questions posted in this site. My architecture: Windows 2008 server with 2 nics in the server. NIC1: IP 10.198.6.xxx, submask 255.255.252.0, gateway 10.198.4.xxx NIC2: IP 192.168.168.xxx, submask 255.255.255, no gateway defined both NICS are just connected to two separate switches, with other computers. I want to be able that all the requests that have a destination of 192.168.168.xxx are redirected to the NIC2, all the other to the NIC1. I know it's possible to do it with the route command, but normally we have to specify a gateway? (route ADD 192.168.168.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 ???) How can this be archived? • Shortcut Keys for external monitor with XP

  Last night my laptop (samsung nc20 running XP) fell off the table and the screen cracked leaving me unable to see anything. I have arranged for a it to be repaired but want to make a back up of several folders before it gets sent away. I was planning to use my parents LG LCD tv as an external monitor so I can see what I am doing when copying things to but after plugging it in nothing seems to happen (works instantly on another laptop running vista) and hotkeys seem to be of no use at all. Does anyone know the series of shortcut keys I will need to do to get XP to use an external monitor? Thanks in advance

• Second monitor stopped being recognized by Windows

  One of the developer PC's running Windows Vista Ultimate had the second monitor stop being recognized in Windows overnight. There were no hardware or driver changes at the time, though I have subsequently updated to the latest nVidia drivers (card is NVIDIA GeForce 210). The non-recognized monitor IS recognized during the boot sequence. In fact, only the "bad" one shows the POST or the Windows loading screen. At some point during Windows initialization after the loading screen disappears and before the logon screen appears, the active monitor switches. Any thoughts? UPDATE: When I open the Vista monitor properties window, I see my primary display and secondary display depicted. The primary one is portrayed as the regular blue box, but the secondary one is portrayed greyed-out. I have the option to "Extend desktop to this monitor", the only resolution is 800x600, and all of the advanced monitor properties are greyed out as well. If I opt to extend the desktop, the greyed-out box turns blue, when I then select Apply the screens flash as usual and I'm given the 15 second countdown to accept the new settings and when I do, everything returns to the previously broken state... secondary monitor is portrayed greyed-out again. At no point is the desktop shown on the secondary monitor.

• Hibernate between OS X and Bootcamp Win 7

  Wouldn't it be great if someone wrote a guide or an app which allowed you to switch instantly between OS X and Windows using Hibernate in both OS:s? Windows 7 already has an option "Hibernate" which allows you to boot back to your OS X partition, but OS X does not exactly offer the same. However, there are possibilities here. It seems that the recent Mac's have 3 different kinds of sleeping mode: Sleep: Low power consumption, RAM still active. Legacy Safe Sleep: No power consumption(?), writes RAM to disk and shuts down (is this the same as Hibernate?) Safe Sleep: Writes RAM to disk and enters sleep mode. If battery level drops too low it goes into Hibernate (is this Hibernate the same as #2 in this list? This is the Hibernate I will be referring to int he rest of this post) It seems that I am unable to force my MacBook Pro (Late 2011) OS X 10.7.3 into a true hibernate using either command line or apps that are supposed to do this. I believe the Mac should show that white loading bar whilst waking up if it was truly put into hibernate (which it does not). But I can get this white bar to show by letting my battery level drop to 0% so there is obviously a system function for it (obviously, duh! :). When Win 7 goes into hibernate it shuts down completely and you can then boot into OS X on startup. On OS X however, hibernate forces you to wake up into OS X. Can you hack this so that you're allowed to select boot partition after OS X hibernates? Would it be possible to use the true hibernate system functionalities of Win 7 and OS X to create a kind of instant switching between the two? Imagine this on a quick SATA-3 SSD like my 180GB Intel 520. Thanks / Willem

• Proper end of day sequence to maintain monitor config

  I've got an HP EliteBook 6930p that travels from home, where it is connected to individual cables, and work where there is a docking station. At both locations I have an external monitor as the secondary monitor and like to have the laptop screen as the primary, i.e. with the task bar. At the end of the day I close the laptop, which is supposed to set it to standby. When I get home I plug in the power cord and the external monitor cord and open the computer. When heading into work I close the computer and unplug everything. Inevitably when I open the computer at the new location the monitors are reversed, i.e. the primary, task bar display is on the external monitor and the laptop shows the secondary, even though when i click identify the laptop has the 1. I then have to disable the secondary display, switch the primary to the laptop and re-enable the secondary. I've tried locking the computer before closing and occasionally that works to keep the setup in place but not always. Any suggestions for how to keep the config in place during transport? ed

• Finding Bluetooth link key in Windows 7, to double pair a device on dualboot computer

  How can I dig up the Bluetooth link key for a paired device in Windows 7? Is this something that is dependent on the Bluetooth stack I'm using (Toshiba), or is there a generic place to store these in Windows 7? Note: I'm not talking about the six-digit code usually typed by the user during pairing - that is worthless since it's discarded after pairing process. What I mean is the 128-bit link key that the devices exchange during pairing, and use thereafter to encrypt all their Bluetooth traffic. Background: I dualboot Windows 7 / Ubuntu on my laptop, and I would like to have my phone paired to both OS's. Since the dualbooting computer has only one Bluetooth adapter and thus only one Bluetooth address, I cannot do two pairings to the phone, since on the second pairing (Windows) the phone just replaces the previous pairing (Linux) to the same Bluetooth address. A thread on Ubuntu forums pointed me to what I have to do - pair first on Linux, then on Windows, and then replace the link key on Linux side with the one Windows negotiated. I can find the Linux side pairing key from /var/lib/Bluetooth/[BD_ADDR]/linkkeys - no problems there. However, on Windows side I can't find the key. According to the forum post, on Windows side the key should be in SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys\[BD_ADDR] but while that registry key does exist, it has no subkeys. (And a similar registry path in ControlSet001 didn't have any subkeys either.) One thing I've been instructed to do is to capture all events during pairing with Sysinternals Process Monitor. I did this, but I haven't been able to find any useful information from the captured events, not even by exporting the data to a huge XML and grepping that with the BD_ADDRs (with or without colons). • Borked ubuntu uninstall - need to delete boot partition (i think)

  I just got a new pc laptop with windows 7 and wanted to install Ubuntu on it. Which i did, no problem there, by downloading the installer, burning it to dvd then booting off the dvd and installing. Then, i realised that the new Ubuntu 12.04 uses the Unity desktop, which i immediately disliked, and after some research, began to hate. So, i decided (after a little googling) to install Linux Mint instead. So, thinking i'd better start from scratch, i went to the Windows 7 disk manager and wiped the Ubuntu partition that had been created. Now, when i start up, i get an error from grub, the ubuntu boot manager: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue> _ and a blinking cursor where i can enter commands. I suspect that what i've done is deleted the main ubuntu partition but NOT deleted another partition which is a boot partition, or something like that? Can anyone tell me how i can rescue or unbork this? I'd like to either a) get back to my original windows-only setup OR b) install linux mint off dvd (which i have), into the empty partition, fixing any grub confusion in the process. Any suggestions? • How do I maximize a window in one monitor and do other things on the other monitor

  Hi, I have windows 7 installed on my laptop which is a Dell studio XPS 16. I recently set up a second monitor for it. I've noticed that when I load up "full maximisation" applications (I don't know the term) like a game or media center on one monitor, I can't seem to do anything with the other monitor. With the game, I can see the other monitor, I can play a movie on it even, but if I click the mouse button on it, it'll stop the game and alt-tab away. In Media Center, I can't even cross my mouse over the other monitor. So my question is, in Windows 7, is it possible to run programs like this that are designed to be run in one maximised window and still be able to do things on the other window?

• Two screens hooked to one laptop

  Hi, I'm thinking of getting rid of my desktop, and using my (much better) laptop instead. I'm only wondering if I would be able to hook the two screens I have with it, so I'd end up with three screens. I've seen people doing it to desktops, but am not sure the same could be accomplished with a laptop. My laptop is a sony vaio, and it's got both a VGA output, and an HDMI output. It'd be great is I could simply hook two screens to it, and have three independent screens (not mirrored). on my desktop, I have pretty much the same thing, but with an extra DVI port. I connect the DVI to one screen, and the VGA to an older one. Trying to connect anything to the HDMI simply mirrors whatever is on the DVI (I've tried it a long time ago) So I was wondering if with the laptop I'd be able to do it, and end up with three independent screens. I don't know if there's anything else I could be using instead (i.e. any extra hardware), so recommendations are more than welcome. Thanks in advance, Marcos
