  • Estimate compressed file size in tar.gz

    - by liori
I've got a set of .tar.gz files, which are duplicity backup files (either full backups or incremental ones). I'd like to compute which directories take the most space on backups. This will most probably be a different figure to calculating which directories take the most space on a live filesystem because I need to account for how often are files changing (and therefore taking space on incremental backups) and how compressible are files. I know that while many other archive formats store compressed files as different entities inside the archive file, .tar.gz files do not, and therefore it is impossible to get an exact amount of storage taken in the archive by a single file after compression. Are there any tools to calculate at least some estimates?

Hi, I started to work in unix for couple of weeks ago and can very little about unix. Everytime I edit a file, a temp file~ appears in the filesystem. What does this mean? Can I just remove all these files? What can I do for removing these files automaticaly everytime I close the original file? /Niklas

  • Abnormal hangs and restarts Ubuntu 8.04

    - by jai-ho
Hi, I am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and seeing the following behaviors: The system hangs after a while and becomes completely unresponsive. The system sometimes restarts itself ! Can you please help me identify what is the problem? Also please mention where should I look for the possible cause of this error. Thanks. EDIT: Got the following from the dmesg output (the system got hung and had to restart) [ 15.452015] Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods [ 15.456882] Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods [ 15.457987] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 52x/52x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray [ 15.457993] Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20 [ 15.458058] sr 0:0:1:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 [ 15.463028] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] 156301488 512-byte hardware sectors (80026 MB) [ 15.463051] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off [ 15.463055] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [ 15.463083] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [ 15.463151] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] 156301488 512-byte hardware sectors (80026 MB) [ 15.463167] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off [ 15.463171] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [ 15.463197] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [ 15.463202] sda:<5sr 0:0:1:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 5 [ 15.464634] sd 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0 [ 15.470120] sda1 sda2 < sda5 [ 15.495536] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk [ 15.759549] Attempting manual resume [ 15.759554] swsusp: Resume From Partition 8:5 [ 15.759556] PM: Checking swsusp image. • Mount network drives over ssh on Windows

    - by petersohn
There is a remote filesystem I can reach through ssh. On Linux, there are several ways of dealing with it. I like sshfs, because with it I can work with the remote files the same way as with my local files. Is there any similar to Windows, that can map a network drive through ssh? The best I can use is WinSCP, which is good, but not good enough.

Hello all I'm having some difficulty installing Oracle 11gR2 on RHEL 6.2 I have compiled a giant list of every single step I have taken so far I installed RHEL 6.2 on VMWARE it did it's easy install automatically I Selected 4gb of memory Selected max size of 80Gb Selected 2 processors Sorry for the bad styling copy paste isn't working correctly The version of oracle i downloaded is Linux x86-64 11.2.0.1 I am installing this on a local machine NOT a remote machine I followed the following documentation http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24326/toc.htm I bolded the steps which I was least sure about from my research Easy installed with RHEL 6.2 for VMWARE Registered with red hat so I can get updates Reinstalled vmware-tools by pressing enter at every choice Sudo yum update at the end something about GPG key selected y then y Checked Memory Requirements grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 3921368 kb uname -m x86_64 grep SwapTotal /proc/meminfo SwapTotal: 6160376 kb free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3921368 2032012 1889356 0 76216 1533268 -/+ buffers/cache: 422528 3498840 Swap: 6160376 0 6160376 df -h /dev/shm Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on tmpfs 1.9G 276K 1.9G 1% /dev/shm df -h /tmp Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 73G 2.7G 67G 4% / df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 73G 2.7G 67G 4% / tmpfs 1.9G 276K 1.9G 1% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 291M 58M 219M 21% /boot All looked fine to me except maybe for swap? • Powershell mapped network drive doesn't persist

    - by Davidw
I'm trying to create a script that maps a network drive whenever I connect to a VPN, then disconnects the drive when I disconnect from the VPN, using Task Scheduler to launch the script when the event is created. It launches the script, which creates the drive, but when Powershell closes, it disconnects the drive, so it only stays open for a few seconds, then closes it again. I have the persist parameter specified, but it doesn't persist. New-PSDrive -Name "N" -PSProvider FileSystem -Root \(Serverpath)\ndrive -Persist

  • Are file access times not properly maintained in Mac OS X?

    - by Ether
I'm trying to determine how file access times are maintained by default in Mac OS X, as I'm trying to diagnose some odd behaviour I'm seeing in a new MBP Unibody (running Snow Leopard, 10.6.2): The symptoms (drilling down to the specific behaviour that seems to be causing the issue): mutt is unable to switch to mailboxes which have recently received new mail mail is delivered by procmail, which updates the mtime of the mbox folder it is updating, but does not alter the atime (this is how new mail detection works: by comparing atime to mtime) however, both the mtime and atime of the mbox file is getting updated Through testing, it does not appear that atimes can be set separately in the filesystem: : [ether@tequila ~]$; touch test : [ether@tequila ~]$; touch -m -t 200801010000 test2 : [ether@tequila ~]$; touch -a -t 200801010000 test3 : [ether@tequila ~]$; ls -l test* -rw------- 1 ether staff 0 Dec 30 11:42 test -rw------- 1 ether staff 0 Jan 1 2008 test2 -rw------- 1 ether staff 0 Dec 30 11:43 test3 : [ether@tequila ~]$; ls -lu test* -rw------- 1 ether staff 0 Dec 30 11:42 test -rw------- 1 ether staff 0 Dec 30 11:43 test2 -rw------- 1 ether staff 0 Dec 30 11:43 test3 The test2 file is created with an old mtime, and the atime is set to now (as it is a new file), which is correct. However, test3 is created with an old atime, but is not set properly on the file. To be sure this is not just behaviour seen with new files, let's modify an old file: : [ether@tequila ~]$; touch -a -t 200801010000 test : [ether@tequila ~]$; ls -l test -rw------- 1 ether staff 0 Dec 30 11:42 test : [ether@tequila ~]$; ls -lu test -rw------- 1 ether staff 0 Dec 30 11:45 test So it would seem that atimes cannot be set explicitly (it is always reset to "now" when either mtime or atime modifications are submitted). Is this something inherent to the filesystem itself, is it something that can be changed, or am I totally crazy and looking in the wrong place? PS. the output of mount is: : [ether@tequila ~]$; mount /dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled) devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse) map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse) map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse) ...and Disk Utility says that the drive is of type "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • certain thumbdrives keep a system from going out of the boot screen

    - by The Journeyman geek
I have an old r51 which i boot off usb. Apparently, if i have a toshiba 2gb thumbdrive similar to this plugged in, or an old imation 1gb drive plugged in, it won't boot at all- it freezes in the bios loading screen until its unplugged. I need to try it on another system but i'm wondering what could be causing it- since i suppose this is at a lower level than filesystem, and the drives work fine otherwise - even being readable if inserted after the system is booted from another source, with neither drive plugged in

  • ZFS vs XFS

    - by DrJokepu
We're considering building a ~16TB storage server. At the moment, we're considering both ZFS and XFS as filesystem. What are the advantages, disadvantages? What do we have to look for? Is there a third, better option?

  • Parallel File Copy

    - by Jon
I have a list of files I need to copy on a Linux system - each file ranges from 10 to 100GB in size. I only want to copy to the local filesystem. Is there a way to do this in parallel - with multiple processes each responsible for copying a file - in a simple manner? I can easily write a multithreaded program to do this, but I'm interested in finding out if there's a low level Linux method for doing this.

  • Permission denied install Joomla CiviCRM

    - by Tim
Dear All, I am trying to install CiviCRM on a Joomla 1.5.17 web server running Ubuntu 9.10. Uploading the package to the tmp directory in /var/www/[site name]/tmp and installing creates this error: Warning: fopen(/var/www/trbcp/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/templates/CRM/common/civicrm.settings.php.tpl) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/trbcp/libraries/joomla/filesystem/file.php on line 240 Warning: fopen(/var/www/trbcp/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/templates/CRM/common/civicrm.settings.php.tpl) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/trbcp/libraries/joomla/filesystem/file.php on line 240 Warning: include_once(/var/www/trbcp/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php) [function.include-once]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/trbcp/administrator/components/com_civicrm/configure.php on line 115 Warning: include_once() [function.include]: Failed opening '/var/www/trbcp/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php' for inclusion (include_path='.') in /var/www/trbcp/administrator/components/com_civicrm/configure.php on line 115 Warning: require_once(DB.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/trbcp/administrator/components/com_civicrm/configure.php on line 140 Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'DB.php' (include_path='.') in /var/www/trbcp/administrator/components/com_civicrm/configure.php on line 140 Initially I got a permissions denied error and thought that Joomla did not have permissions to all its directories but looking at Help-System information all the necessary directories are writable. I then decided to chmod 777 all the directories and try again but it still fails. Looking at the directories afterwards it seems that the new directories being created are not being created 777. By changing them I can get at least one step further before the error appears again. My question is does anyone know how to get round this? I am thinking that the new directories being created will require sudo privileges to have mv and create actions carried out, hence the permission denied errors. Can this be configured in Joomla? Or is there a way to specify that new directories created in /var/www/[site name] take 777 by default? any help greatly appreciated! EDIT: P.S. if anyone could give me a clue as to how the insert code feature works as well that would be great! Might make this post a bit more readable! EDIT2: Well I have had a bash at changing the permissions and ownership. sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/trbcp I then tried changing the whole /var directory (insecure I know but this is a test and dev server for me to find my feet on) to 777 and still getting permission errors. It seems to be error opening stream? Not a php guy so not sure what that is but could it be that permissions to run php script need to change? any thoughts greatly appreciated.

  • Converting a Linux host to Virtual Machine

    - by Shyam
On my PC I am currently running Fedora 12. I would like to convert that and the filesystem to a Virtual Machine, so that I can install Windows 7 as the main operating system and have this Fedora 12 as a VM in VMWare or VirtualBox or some such Desktop Virtualization system. Is this possible and how if yes, how?

  • Volume group disappeared, LVs still available

    - by Ben
I've run into an issue with my KVM host which runs VMs on a LVM volume. As of last night the logical volumes are no longer seen as such (I can't create snapshots of them even though I have been for months now). Running any scans all result in nothing being found: [root@apollo ~]# pvscan No matching physical volumes found [root@apollo ~]# vgscan Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... No volume groups found root@apollo ~]# lvscan No volume groups found If I try restoring the VG conf backup from /etc/lvm/backups/vg0 I get the following error: [root@apollo ~]# vgcfgrestore -f /etc/lvm/backup/vg0 vg0 Couldn't find device with uuid 20zG25-H8MU-UQPf-u0hD-NftW-ngsC-mG63dt. Cannot restore Volume Group vg0 with 1 PVs marked as missing. Restore failed. /etc/lvm/backups/vg0 has the following for the physical volume: physical_volumes { pv0 { id = "20zG25-H8MU-UQPf-u0hD-NftW-ngsC-mG63dt" device = "/dev/sda5" # Hint only status = ["ALLOCATABLE"] flags = [] dev_size = 4292870143 # 1.99902 Terabytes pe_start = 384 pe_count = 524031 # 1.99902 Terabytes } } fdisk -l /dev/sda shows the following: [root@apollo ~]# fdisk -l /dev/sda Disk /dev/sda: 6000.1 GB, 6000069312512 bytes 64 heads, 32 sectors/track, 5722112 cylinders Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 = 1048576 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x000188b7 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 2 32768 33553408 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda2 32769 33280 524288 83 Linux /dev/sda3 33281 1081856 1073741824 83 Linux /dev/sda4 1081857 3177984 2146435072 85 Linux extended /dev/sda5 1081857 3177984 2146435071+ 8e Linux LVM The server is running a 4 disk HW RAID10 which seems perfectly healthy according to megacli and smartd. The only odd message in /var/log/messages is the following which shows up every couple of hours: Jun 10 09:41:57 apollo udevd[527]: failed to create queue file: No space left on device Output of df -h [root@apollo ~]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 1016G 119G 847G 13% / /dev/sda2 508M 67M 416M 14% /boot Does anyone have any ideas what to do next? The VMs are all running fine at the moment apart from not being able to snapshot them. Updated with extra info It's not a lack of inodes: [root@apollo ~]# df -i Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on /dev/sda3 67108864 48066 67060798 1% / /dev/sda2 32768 47 32721 1% /boot pvs, vgs & lvs either output nothing or "No volume groups found".

  • Where should the web server root directory go in linux?

    - by Xeoncross
I see that Apache and Nginx both use var/www as their web root - but that directory is not covered in the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. I also see some servers with the web root in the /home/username/www directory. So where does the web root go? Or rather, where should it go most of the time for the common web server?

  • Can I choose a sparse file as vdev for a zfs pool?

    - by Karl Richter
man zpool states that a vdev for a zfs pool can be a "regular file". Can I specify a sparse file (the warning about the integrity of the file being determined by the underlying filesystem should apply with the same relevance for a sparse file)? The ZFS administration guide on https://pthree.org/2012/12/04/zfs-administration-part-i-vdevs/ states that file vdevs "must be preallocated, and not sparse files or thin provisioned" (thanks to @jlliagre). On https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Experimenting_with_ZFS sparse files are used without any comment.

  • FAT32: setting a mixed-case volume label on Windows?

    - by BoltClock
When I try to set the volume label for my FAT32 USB drive the normal way (using Windows Explorer or Disk Management), the filesystem just makes the label uppercase when applying it. Is it possible at all to set a mixed-case volume label on the drive on Windows? I know there may be no real reason for me to do that, but I'd really like to know.

    - by agg
I have ported Linux to AT91SAM9261 board, I have compiled my own Bootstrap, Uboot, Kernel and filesystem. Now I want to debug my Linux kernel 2.6.30 using KGDB and GDB. I have host with Ubuntu installed and target (AT91SAM9261) with kernel 2.6.30, I want to debug my Linux kernel 2.6.30 using serial/Ethernet. In KGDB official site they have given KGDB patch for x86, but not for ARM. Is it possible to debug my ARM linux kernel on AT91SAM9261?
