• Can I fork a copy command on ReadyNAS SSH?

  I have a ReadyNAS 102 with a couple of USB drives attached. There were times I wanted to copy files between volumes. Unfortunately I have also accidentally cut off copying process by accidentally closing off the SSH sessions. Is it possible for me to fork a cp or mv process on SSH? As it currently stands when I close the SSH session, be it by accidentally closing the terminal window or closing my laptop screen and putting it to sleep, the copy process stops. Can I do something like cp ~/blah /some/other/path & and have the process keep running to completion in the background even if the SSH session is terminated?

• When USB keyboard is plugged in on computer start-up, search results window is being opened multiple times

  As the title says - when my Alienware keyboard is plugged into my laptop during Windows 7 resume from sleep/hibernation, the windows search results and help window (F3, F1 on Windows 7) is being opened multiple times. This behavior won't stop until I pull out one of the two USB connectors this keyboard has. When I plug it back, everything is normal. Also, if I only connect one of the two during Windows resume, it won't happen. Do you have any idea what could cause this weird issue? Edit: Following the feedback on comments suggesting to log my keypress'es during the weird behavior, I've noticed it's actually F1, F2, F3 being spammed in an ordered sequence. Clicking on them manually didn't stop them from repeating.

• Computer Locks Up Completely When Resuming From Standby

  Okay, so I'm having a strange issue lately with my desktop, and off the top of my head I'm not sure what the problem is, so I'm hoping for some ideas on how to track down the cause. First, my PC: AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core 2.4 GHz 4 GB DDR2 160 GB boot HDD 1 TB & 120 GB secondary HDD Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit I have my power settings as follows: Turn off the display: 10 minutes Turn off hard disk: 20 minutes Sleep after: Never After a while, I'll come back to use my computer again, wiggle the mouse, and the screen comes back on like normal, but the desktop is unresponsive. I can move the cursor, but nothing responds to clicks or keyboard entry. If I click a few times with the mouse, the computer eventually locks up completely and the mouse cursor stops moving as well. After I restart, everything works just fine. Is there a log you recommend checking or really any suggestions would be welcome at this point. Thanks!

What's the easiest way to force that process to die now without losing my terminal? Summary of answers below: Usually, you can Ctrl-z to put the process to sleep, and then do "kill -9 process-pid", where you find the process's pid with 'ps' and other tools. On Bash (and possibly other shells) you can do "kill -9 %1" (or '%N' in general) which is easier. If Ctrl-z doesn't work, you'll have to open another terminal and kill from there.

• Ethernet port sleeping on PS3 running linux

  My lab has a PS3 running Ubuntu Linux 9.04 Server Edition. After a period of a few hours with no use, the Ethernet connection (eth0) seems to go to sleep, causing the connection to be lost. Pinging or trying to SSH into the machine results in no response. The fix I've been using is to access the machine locally and restart it (trying to bring eth0 down then up doesn't seem to correct it). I've tried setting up an hourly cron job that runs on the PS3 and pings another machine just to create network activity, but this doesn't seem to solve the problem either. Update: The solution was to run the above cron job much more frequently: every 10 minutes works.

• Powershell and DfsrConfigurationFromAD - how to check all servers are updated?

  I have two Win2012R2 servers (SERVER1 and SERVER2) that uses DFS Replication for keeping a couple of folders synchronized. Using the following Powershell-script that i run on SERVER1 I disconnect it from the group: Set-DfsrConnection -GroupName "Group1" -SourceComputerName "SERVER1" -DestinationComputerName "SERVER2" -DisableConnection $True; And to update both the servers with the configuration I run the command: Update-DfsrConfigurationFromAD -ComputerName "SERVER1","SERVER2" Now the question is, how can check on SERVER1 that SERVER2 has gotten the updated information from the AD so that I can be sure that the connection has been disabled? Usually it takes around 10-30 seconds after the Update-DfsrConfigurationFromAD command has been run before the DFS Management on SERVER2 gets updated but I need some kind of a "check and sleep loop" in my code. I've tried checking event logs and using Invoke-Command {Get-DfsrConnection} from PM-SERVER01 but nothing seems to work.

  The NTP documentation says: Under ordinariy conditions, ntpd adjusts the clock in small steps so that the timescale is effectively continuous and without discontinuities - http://doc.ntp.org/4.1.0/ntpd.htm However, this is not at all what I have noticed in practice. If I manually change the system time backwards or forwards 5 or 10 seconds then start ntpd, I notice that it adjusts the clock in one shot. For example, with this code: #!/usr/bin/env python import time last = time.time() while True: time.sleep(1) print time.time() - last last = time.time() When I first change the time, I'll notice something like: 1.00194311142 8.29711604118 1.0010509491 Then when I start NTPd, I'll see something like: 1.00194311142 -8.117301941 1.0010509491 Is there any way to force ntpd to make the adjustments in smaller steps?

  Hey guys. So after a prolonged period, (overnight) i lose the ability to initiate a scan directly from the unit. I'll initiate a job and after awhile, it times out and beeps. However, when i go to the PC and initiate a scan from there, the scan job goes through just fine, and i can then initiate scans directly from the unit all day. Until a prolonged period (overnight). Then i have to do the process again. Ive made sure all powersave settings were off.. The PC doesnt go to sleep or a powersave state. Any insight into this will be appreciated. • How can I make a persistent ssh tunnel?

  I have a Mac laptop and would like to have a persistent ssh tunnel so I can always log in from outside the local network. I'm looking for something that will work when the server can't be reached initially (e.g. if I don't have an Internet connection when I boot it), and will automatically start the tunnel when possible. I've tried putting an @reboot autossh line in my crontab, but I've found that sessions started with autossh disconnect every so often, and autossh quits if the first attempt fails. My current workaround is a small script and a cronjob: # crontab /home/blackl/bin/script &! # script #!/bin/sh while true; do ssh -Ngn -R $some_port:localhost:22 $server; sleep 30; done; Is there a better way to do this, or will I just have to be happy with this for now?

  i have an HP dm3t notebook which normally comes with windows 7. after some time i figured out how to install Windows XP on it. but now i am facing a problem that the brightess controls dont work so i am unable to change the brightess. the strange thing is that all the other buttons (sound volume, mute, sleep , etc... ) works but not the 2 brightess controls. i already downloaded the "HP Quick Launch Buttons" so i am asking about suggesitions how can i enable these two buttons in windows XP or even if i can change the brightess using some kind of software. thanks

• Windows 7: Screen will power off, or blank and lock, but not both.

  For some reason, my Windows 7 (Ultimate, 64bit) laptop will not power off the display and keep it off if I have the screen saver and/or the timed auto-lock enabled. Either the display blanks (and locks) but never powers off, or it powers off for less then a minute, then the back light visibly powers back on and stays on, even though the screen remains blanked until I touch a key or the trackpad. I've tried varying the screen power down time to greater than, less than, and exactly equal to the blank screen/lock time, with no success. Turning the screen saver and the timed auto-lock off does allow the timed display power down in the power settings to work properly. (Note that I am not talking about system sleep or hibernate. I'm talking about when the machine remains running, but only the display should power down.)

For each machine, shutdown the Apache Update the code Start over the server and proceed to the next server I think when my server is shutdown, ELB will not distribute request to my server, but how about the request still serving? I think a better approach is Stop accepting new request from ELB Sleep for sometimes, shutdown web server only if all requests are responded Update the codes Start the server again But how to perform (1) and (2) from my local sever?   I have installed an HP DeskJet 4620 driver on a win 7 machine. All works perfectly for several days, and than printing is not longer possible. Instead I get the message: "Unable to communicate with printer". This happened on every Win 7 PC I tried, and none of the HP/MS sites contain any relevant info... (Posting this so that the answer appears online, as I did solve it after much work) Solution: It appears that HP installation puts a unique "port" called "HP Network re-discovery". It stops working after some time (possibly after the first time the printer/pc enter sleep mode). BUT, the standard MS TCP port works just fine. So: Go to "Printers" Right click Printer Click "Printer properties" and then "Printer" or "Fax" (for both - do all this twice) Click "Add Port..." Select "Standard TCP Port" Fill in details Move printer to use the new port by un-checking the old one and checking the new one Happy printing.

  Every night except one this week my laptop froze over night. I tried to check the event viewer, but there's no real help there. Tonight I'll do a memtest to check the RAM. And this shouldn't be a temperature issue since I can play game without any problem (Diablo 3, League of legend) Is there any diagnosys tool I could use. Maybe something that would write time down every minute so I know the precise time when it freeze? • Fix two-finger Trackpad Scrolling on a Macbook running Bootcamp

  This is an issue that's annoyed me for some time. About a year ago, the two-finger scrolling in Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro stopped working. I discovered that a fix for this is to open Bootcamp from the control panel, go to the Trackpad tab, tick and untick "Tap to click" and click ok. This has to be done every time the machine is woken from sleep or rebooted. I'm now using Windows 8 and encountering the same issue. I've tried several different driver revisions, and none have helped. I'm sick of going through the motions. Has anyone got a solution for this?

• Strange PHP output buffering

• Configure PL2303-based USB-to-RS232 adapter to stay awake when no active device is present

  I am resurrecting some X10 devices with the aid of a USB-to-RS232 adapter. The problem is, that the adapter only works with the Firecracker device when there is another serial device on the line (the Firecracker is a pass-through device that monitors the RTS and DTR lines to do its magic). Is the PL2303 going to sleep without a real device on the line? Is there an option or command to keep it awake? Is there a cable configuration that would make it work without a real serial device present?

• When HDD wakes up?

  Im looking for some small script or application which could log the time when a non-system disk wakes up. I cannot identify which application or script wakes up my non-system drive (which has to be asleep until I work with it). I have already set the noatime flag, tried to use powertop and iotop to determine which application could prevent it from going to sleep - but with no result. So my plan is to set this drive asleep (hdparm -Y) and see at what time it gets regularly woken up. Thanks for any advice.
