  • Tracing spoofed mobile phone numbers

    I am being harassed by some prank caller that is spoofing his/her number neither T-Mobile nor the police can do anything about it. I have been told from one of my friends that if I set up an Asterisk server, I can accomplish the tracing of the prank caller. I am hardly knowledgeable in terms of networking, so a lot of what they told me was filled with jargon I couldn't really understand. But first things first, I downloaded Asterisk 1.5.0 and was finally able to install it (had issues with partitioning... In the end I just had Asterisk hog the entire HDD space). I tried out Asterisk, and it was slightly complicated for me so I decided to install trixbox 2.8.0.4 instead. It looks very similar to Asterisk... I'm not entirely sure what to do from here. I know I have to get the server up and running, but do I need a PBX card or something to accomplish what I'm trying to do? I'm running trixbox on a laptop to minimize electricity usage. Also, will I have to open any ports for the server? I have limited administrative permissions because of my father who is very uncomfortable with opening ports.

View.py includes: def pics(request): p = Photo.objects.all() return render_to_response('Shots.html', {'p': p}) The following simple code in the template will generate associated images: {% for p in p %} <img src = "{{ p.display.url }}"> <img src = "{{ p.thumbnail_image.url }}"> {% endfor %} I'm attempting to generate a series of thumbnails {{ p.thumbnail_image.url }} which, when mouseover'd, will generate the slightly larger version of the image, {{ p.display.url }} via Javascript. I believe it has to do with how I'm specifying the variable {{ p.display.url }}.

  • How to move the Windows 7 bootloader to the Windows 7 partition?

    I recently installed Windows 7 in a triple boot setup alongside XP and Linux. When I was finished and was in the process of restoring the bootloader for Linux I discovered something strange about what Windows 7 had done. I discovered that Windows 7 had not installed a bootloader to it's own partition, and instead had instead set up a bootloader on the pre-existing XP partition that offers a choice between 7 and XP. This behaviour has been noticed by others. Now my booting is slightly odd. I have GRUB on the MBR which lets me choose between Linux and Windows. When I select Windows I have Grub boot to the XP partition where I get the 2nd choice between 7 and XP. Why doesn't the Windows 7 installer put the Windows 7 bootloader on the Windows 7 partition like all previous MS OSs? This is now going to be a real problem for me, as I now want to wipe the XP partition and install something else there (probably another non-MS OS). How can I move the bootloader for Windows 7 onto the Windows 7 partition, thus making it bootable and allowing me to safely wipe the XP partition?

  • Eclipse (Aptana) Typing Lag

    Hello SO, I've been using Aptana for some time now, and as of recent I've been dealing with files that are really, really big (500+ lines of code, which is huge for me, being a novice developer). Whenever I deal with smaller files, I get that weird sensation that I'm "in front of" what's typing, but now I'm quite sure of it--there is a significant lag between when I type something and when I see the text appear on screen. I don't have this issue with Dreamweaver CS3, so I know my computer has the capability to edit these files without this happening, but Eclipse still lags. I also don't see when something is being deleted if I hold down backspace, I see the first few characters get deleted, but then everything "hangs." Once I release the backspace key, the characters that would've been shown deleting instantly vanish all at once. The same thing happens with the forward delete key. I'm beginning to think this is an issue with Java, since I have the same feeling that everything is slightly "behind me" when I'm using -any- Java application. The computer is an intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Prescott, with 2GB's of DDR400 RAM and a Radeon HD3650 graphics card. If anyone knows how to fix this lagging issue, I'm all ears (eyes?); if anyone can recommend a different IDE with capabilities similar to Aptana (I do Python, HTML, CSS and JS; I use Git for SCM), I'd be glad to give it a try.   • ASP.NET MVC on GoDaddy Not Working (Not Primary Domain Deployment)

    I am trying to get ASP.NET MVC working on GoDaddy and I'm not having much luck. I have read the post on SO that covers the subject, but I must have a slightly different configuration or must be missing somehting along the way because the main MVC page comes up, but all links seem to fail and no amount of tweaking the URLs seems to get it to work. A little back ground. I have a single hosting plan with many domains pointed to sub folders of the main domain. Basic ASP.NET web forms pages work just fine, but of course I wanted to try and host a sample MVC site in one of these non-primary domains. You can go to the URL here. As you can see this first page comes up, but if you click on Home or About it doesn't work. Clicking on Home creates this link "http://www.jprescottsanders.com/jps/" and clicking on about creates this link "http://www.jprescottsanders.com/jps/Home/About". As you can see JPS sneaks in there, this of course is the sub folder that i place my web app files in. I would like to know if this is a MVC related issue or a GoDaddy issue. I suspect that MVC may want to sit in the root directory of the site, and when it puts the "jps" into the URLs it breaks the routing mechanisms (but this is conjecture). I know Dan said this was possible so I'm hoping he sees this and helps me get to the bottom of this deployment strategy for MVC.

    I have the following Tables: Players id playerName Weapons id type otherData Weapons2Player id playersID_reference weaponsID_reference That was nice and simple. Now I need to SELECT items from the Weapons table, according to some of their characteristics that i previously just packed into the otherData column (since it was only needed on the client side). The problem is, that the types have varying characteristics - but also a lot of similar data. So I'm trying to decide on the following possibilities, all of which have their pros and cons. Solution A Kill the Weapons table, and create a new table for each Weapon-Type: Weapons_Swords id bladeType damage otherData Weapons_Guns id accuracy damage ammoType otherData But how will i Link these to the Players ? create Weapons_Swords2Players, Weapons_Guns2Players for each weapon-type? (Will result in a lot more JOINS when loading the player with all his weapons...and it's also more complicated to insert a new player) or add another column to Weapons2Players called WeaponsTypeTable, then do sub-selects to the correct Weapons sub-table (seems easier, but not really right, slightly easier insert i guess) Solution B Keep the Weapons table, and add all the fields i need to it. The Problem is that then there will be NULL fields, since not all Weapon-Types use all fields (can't be right) Weapons id type accuracy damage ammoType bladeType otherData This seems to be pretty basic stuff, but i just can't decide what's best. Or is there a correct Solution C? many thanks.

  • How do you localize/internationalize an MVC Controller when using a SQL based localization provider?

    Hopefully this isn't too silly of a question. In MVC there appears to be plenty of localization support in the views. Once I get to the controller, however, it becomes murky. Using meta:resourcekey="blah" is out, same with <%$ Resources:PageTitle.Text%. ASP.NET MVC - Localization Helpers -- suggested extensions for the Html helper classes like Resource(this Controller controller, string expression, params object[] args). Similarly, Localize your MVC with ease suggested a slightly different extension like Localize(this System.Web.UI.UserControl control, string resourceKey, params object[] args) None of these approaches works while in a controller. I put together the below function and I'm using the controllers full class name as my VirtualPath. But I'm new to MVC and assume there's a better way. public static string Localize (System.Type theType, string resourceKey, params object[] args) { string resource = (HttpContext.GetLocalResourceObject(theType.FullName, resourceKey) ?? string.Empty).ToString(); return mergeTokens(resource, args); } Thoughts?     I'm working on a project which includes some slightly more complex dynamic layout of interface elements than what I'm used to. I always feel stupid writing complex code that checks if so-and-so is close to such-and-such and in that case move it x% in some direction, etc. That's just not how programming should be done. Programming should be as declarative as possible! Precisely because what I'm going to do is fairly simple, I thought it would be a good opportunity to try something new, and I thought of using NSPredicate as a simple constraints solver. I've only used NSPredicate for very simple tasks so far, but I know that it capable of much more. Are there any ideas, experiences, examples, warnings, insights that could be useful here? I'll give a very simple example so there will be something concrete to answer. How could I use NSPredicate to solve the following constraints: viewB.xmid = (viewB.leftEdge + viewB.width) / 2 viewB.xmid = max(300, viewA.rightEdge + 20 + viewB.width/2) ("viewB should be horizontally centered on coordinate 300, unless its left edge gets within 20 pixels of viewB's right edge, in which case viewA's left edge should stay fixed at 20 pixels to the right of viewB's right edge and viewA's horizontal center get pushed to the right.") viewA.rightEdge and viewB.width can vary, and those are the 'input variables'. EDIT: Any solution would probably have to use the NSExpression method -(id)expressionValueWithObject:(id)object context:(NSMutableDictionary *)context. This answer is relevant.

  • Standardizing a Release/Tools group on a specific language

    I'm part of a six-member build and release team for an embedded software company. We also support a lot of developer tools, such as Atlassian's Fisheye, Jira, etc., Perforce, Bugzilla, AnthillPro, and a couple of homebrew tools (like my Django release notes generator). Most of the time, our team just writes little plugins for larger apps (ex: customize workflows in Anthill), long-term utility scripts (package up a release for QA), or things like Perforce triggers (don't let people check into a specific branch unless their change description includes a bug number; authenticate against Active Directory instead of Perforce's internal passwords). That's about the scale of our problems, although we sometimes tackle something slightly more sizable. My boss, who is reasonably technical, has asked us to standardize on one or two languages so we can more easily substitute for each other. He's advocating bash scripts and Perl, due to their universality and simplicity. I can see his point--we mostly do "glue", so why not use "glue" languages rather than saddle ourselves with something designed for much larger projects? Since some of the tools we work with are Java-based, we do need to use something that speaks JVM sometimes. (The path of least resistance for these projects is BeanShell and Groovy.) I feel a tremendous itch toward language advocacy, but I'm trying to avoid saying "We should use Python 'cause I like it and Perl is gross." Instead, I'm trying to come up with a good approach to defining our problem set: what problems do we solve with scripts? Would we benefit from a library of common functions by our team, or are most of our projects more isolated? What is it reasonable to expect my co-workers to learn? What languages give us the most ease of development and ease of modification? Can you folks suggest some useful ways to approach this problem, both for my own thinking process and to help me facilitate some brainstorming among my coworkers?

  • Help with animating an element in jQuery

    I have an unordered list with a few list elements. #tags { width: 300px; height: 300px; position: relative; border: 1px solid red; list-style: none none; } #tags li { position: absolute; background: gray; } I have also started writing a jQuery plugin to animate the list elements. So far, I place the list elements randomly in the parent container, and choose a random font size for the text. My next step (which I am a bit stuck on) is to animate the list elements... essentially, I want the list elements to do something like this Slide from left to right whilst getting slightly larger up to the middle and then dropping in size back to normal when it hits the right border. Then, it should do the same in reverse, however it should also set a negative 'z-index' and maybe fade in opacity a bit. The first bit I'm really stuck on, is how to determine if the element is near the middle, in a way that I can have a value that starts at 0.1 on the far left hand size and is 1 in the middle and then back to 0.1 on the far right hand size. Basically, I want them to appear as if they are going around in a faux 3D circle into the page. Then I could do something like this $(this).css({ fontSize: percentageTowardsMiddle * 14, }); Do you know how I could do this? Thanks

  • PHP fails silently when php-code is within html tag

    PROBLEM UPDATED, READ BELOW For some reason my CI fails silently when loading view. Loading view is simply called from controller $this->load->view('templates/default.php'); Now. There are some functions in the loaded view that are not defined unless a proper helper is loaded as well. Normally, php would throw an error, but instead it fails silently here. I have no idea why. The template gets outputted till the line containing the undefined function. It took me long time to realise where my script is failing. Here's my setup: Windows 7 Ultimate Apache 2.2.15 PHP 5.3.2 with following error reporting settings: display_errors = On display_startup_errors = On error_reporting = E_ALL | E_STRICT CodeIgniter 1.7.2 Any ideas why would that be? UPDATE After further debugging, it turned out that PHP fails to report any errors when php code is inline with HTML and within the HTML tag. Now this is bizarre. This returns Fatal Error: <p><?php echo $bogus(); ?></p> This doesn't and fails silently: <p class="<?php echo $bogus(); ?>">paragraph</p> Why? :O UPDATE 2 Further investigation showed that if an error_log in PHP is specified, the errors are in fact reported in that file, but still not in the browser... Again, why? UPDATE 3 Actually my code should be slightly different. Checked another PHP installation on completely different machine and it confirmed the PHP bug.   • Get available screen area in autohotkey

    I'm trying to write a few simple AutoHotkey scripts for moving windows around, and I'm having trouble getting the correct screen size values. I'm trying to get the size of the usable area on the screen (generally the full screen resolution minus the taskbar, and maybe any other docked windows like the sidebar in Vista). Neither of the methods I've found for getting the screen width seems to work. None of the 3 methods I found to get the screen size are giving me the right values. Here's the test script I'm using (running on XP with the taskbar on the bottom at its default size): #7:: WinMove A,,0,0,A_ScreenWidth,A_ScreenHeight return #8:: ;SM_CXMAXIMIZED and SM_CYMAXIMIZED SysGet, ScreenWidth, 61 SysGet, ScreenHeight, 62 WinMove A,,0,0,ScreenWidth,ScreenHeight return #9:: ;SM_CXFULLSCREEN and SM_CYFULLSCREEN SysGet, ScreenWidth, 16 SysGet, ScreenHeight, 17 WinMove A,,0,0,ScreenWidth,ScreenHeight return #7 causes the window to take up the entire resolution, so it overlaps the taskbar. #8 causes the width to be larger than the resolution (I see the window's right edge show up on my secondary monitor) and the height is slightly too large, so the window partially overlaps the taskbar area. Looks like this is correct except for not taking into account the window decorations at the edges. #9 seems to have the correct width, but the height is too short. It looks like it's subtracting the taskbar's height from the resolution's height, but then subtracting another 30 pixels from it. I could just use what I have in #9 and add 30 to the height I get, but that feels too much like a hack that would break in other configurations. It seems like there has to be a way to get the available screen size properly, but I can't find it in AutoHotkey. For reference, this seems to give me what I need in Java: Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize();

(Though, I understand in variant one, the copy constructor is not called and thus is slightly better than variant II). Also, for comparison, I made the following changes. BoundingBox Player::GetBoundingBox(void) { return BoundingBox( &GetBoundingSphere() ); } with Variants: I BoundingBox& l_Bbox = l_pPlayer->GetBoundingBox(); and II: BoundingBox l_Bbox = l_pPlayer->GetBoundingBox(); The objet l_Bbox still does not out scope. So, I don't see how "bind it to a const reference in the calling function, its lifetime would be extended to the scope of the calling function", really extends the lifetime of the object to the scope of the calling function ?     I have an UIImageView and taking the raw touch input. I need to check if a touch is within a certain set of squares. At the moment... I have this if statement.... if(46 < touchedAt.x && touchedAt.x < 124 && 18 < touchedAt.y && touchedAt.y < 75) but I have tried to simplify it to this one... if(46 < touchedAt.x < 124 && 18 < touchedAt.y < 75) It didn't work. Is it possible to simplify like this or am I stuck with the slightly lengthier version at the top? Is there a reason why the types of comparisons in the bottom if don't work? Many Thanks.

  • Hybrid EAV/CR model via WCF (and statically-typed language)?

    Background I'm working on the architecture for a cloud-based LOB application, using Silverlight for the client, WCF, ASP.NET/C# for server and SQL Server for storage. The data model requires some flexibility per user (ability to add custom properties and define validation rules for them, for example), and a hybrid EAV/CR persistence model on the server side will suit nicely. Problem I need an efficient and maintainable technology and approach to handle the transformation from the persisted EAV model to/from WCF (and similarly allow the client to bind to the resulting data - DataGrid is a key UI element)? Admission: I don't yet know enough about WCF to understand if it supports ExpandoObject directly, but I suspect it will. Options I started off looking at WCF RIA services, but quickly discovered they're heavily dependent upon both static type data and compile-time code generation. Neither of these appeal. The options I'm considering include: Using WCF RIA services and pass the data over the network directly in EAV form (i.e. Dictionary), and handle the binding issue purely on the client side (like this) Using a dynamic language (probably IronPython) to handle both ends of the communication, with plumbing to generate the necessary CLR type data on the client to allow binding, and transform to/from EAV form on the server (spam preventer stopped me from posting a URL here, I'll try it in a comment). Dynamic LINQ (CreateClass() and friends), although I'm way out of my depth there and don't know what the limitations on that approach might be yet. I'm interested in comments on these approaches as well as alternative approaches that might solve the problem. Other Notes The Silverlight client will not be the only consumer of the service, making me slightly uncomfortable with option #1 above. While the data model is flexible, it's not expected to be modified heavily. For argument's sake, we could assume that we might have 25 distinct data models active at a given time, with something like 10-20 unique data fields/rules each. Modifications to the data model will happen infrequently (typically when a new user is initially configured).

  • Why are my CATransitions acting up?

    I am using the following code to switch between views with CATransition. CATransition *applicationLoadViewIn = [CATransition animation]; [applicationLoadViewIn setDuration:20]; [applicationLoadViewIn setType:kCATransitionPush]; [applicationLoadViewIn setSubtype:kCATransitionFromTop]; [applicationLoadViewIn setTimingFunction:[CAMediaTimingFunction functionWithName:kCAMediaTimingFunctionEaseIn]]; ViewToSwitchTo *myviewcontroller = [[ViewToSwitchTo alloc] init]; [self.view.layer addAnimation:applicationLoadViewIn forKey:kCATransitionPush]; [self.view addSubview:myviewcontroller.view]; It functions mostly how I want it to. It pushes from the top like it should, however it for some reason acts strangely. First, the view I am switching to starts coming in from the bottom like it should, but for some reason, the view that I am switching FROM appears over the top of it with low opacity, so you see both of them. However, you also see the view that is coming in, shifted maybe 100 pixels upwards, on top of itself and the other view, once again with low opacity. Just before the halfway point of the the transition, everything works fine, you only see the view that is coming in and the view going out, doing what they should be doing. But slightly after the halfway point, the view I am switching to appears in its final destination, under the view I am switching from, and the view I am switching from has been reduced in opacity. What is going on here?

    Hi, I'm trying to have this block element to be horizontally aligned in the middle but at the same time I would like the width to be the minimum possible for the contents inside. But I don't think it's possible or I'm not able to do it myself... a#button-link { background: url("images/button-link.png") no-repeat scroll center left; margin: 12px auto 0 auto; display: block; width: 125px; height: 32px; line-height: 32px; padding-left: 35px; font-weight: bold; } This is my current code... The idea behind this is that the text for that tag could be slightly bigger or smaller depending on the user language and how much characters the same sentence has for that specific user's language. There's no way I can control but I still would like to have this element horizontally aligned to center. Is this possible with CSS?

  • Problems with utf-8 encoding in php

    Hi, Another utf-8 related problem I believe... I am using php to update data in a mysql db then display that data elsewhere in the site. Previously I have run into utf-8 problems before where special characters are displayed as question marks when viewed in a browser but this one seems slightly different. I have a number of records to enter that contain the è character. If I enter this directly in the db then it appears correctly on the page so I take this to mean that utf-8 content is being output correctly. However when I try and update the values in the db through php, then the è character is replaced. What appears instead is & Atilde ; & uml ; (without the spaces) which appears in the browser as è I have the tables in the database set to use UTF-8. I believe this is correct cos, as mentioned, if I update the db through phpMyAdmin, its all ok. Similarly I have set the character encoding for the page which seems to be correct. I am also running the sql statement "SET NAMES 'utf8';" before trying to update the db. Anyone have any other ideas as to where the problem may lie? Many thanks

  • Obtaining Current Fiscal Year from Hierarchy with MDX

    I'm building a report in Reporting Services 2005 based on a SSAS 2005 cube. The basic idea of the report is that they want to see sales for this fiscal year to date vs. last year sales year to date. It sounds simple, but being that this is my first "real" report based on SSAS, I'm having a hell of a time. First, how would one calculate the current fiscal year, quarter, or month. I have a Fiscal Date Hierarchy with all that information in it, but I can't figure out how to say: "Based on today's date, find the current fiscal year, quarter, and month." My second, but slightly smaller problem, is getting last years sales vs. this years sales. I have seen MANY examples on how to do this, but they all assume that you select the date manually. Since this is a report and will run pretty much on it's own, I need a way to insert the "current" fiscal year, quarter, and month into the PERIODSTODATE or PARALLELPERIOD functions to get what I want. So, I'm begging for your help on this one. I have to have this report done by tomorrow monring and I'm beginning to freak out a bit. Thanks in advance.

  • django powering multiple shops from one code base on a single domain

    Hey, I am new to django and python and am trying to figure out how to modify an existing app to run multiple shops through a single domain. Django's sites middleware seems inappropriate in this particular case because it manages different domains, not sites run through the same domain, e.g. : domain.com/uk domain.com/us domain.com/es etc. Each site will need translated content - and minor template changes. The solution needs to be flexible enough to allow for easy modification of templates. The forms will also need to vary a bit, e.g minor variances in fields and validation for each country specific shop. I am thinking along the lines of the following as a solution and would love some feedback from experienced django-ers: In short: same codebase, but separate country specific urls files, separate templates and separate database Create a middleware class that does IP localisation, determines the country based on the URL and creates a database connection, e.g. /au/ will point to the au specific database and so on. in root urls.py have routes that point to a separate country specific routing file, e..g (r'^au/',include('urls_au')), (r'^es/',include('urls_es')), use a single template directory but in that directory have a localised directory structure, e.g. /base.html and /uk/base.html and write a custom template loader that looks for local templates first. (or have a separate directory for each shop and set the template directory path in middleware) use the django internationalisation to manage translation strings throughout slight variances in forms and models (e.g. ZA has an ID field, France has 'door code' and 'floor' etc.) I am unsure how to handle these variations but I suspect the tables will contain all fields but allowing nulls and the model will have all fields but allowing nulls. The forms will to be modified slightly for each shop. Anyway, I am keen to get feedback on the best way to go about achieving this multi site solution. It seems like it would work, but feels a bit "hackish" and I wonder if there's a more elegant way of getting this solution to work. Thanks, imanc

    Hello! I'm referring to this Nimbus reference. I tried to set global Font to be slightly larger: UIManager.put("defaultFont", new Font(Font.SANS_SERIF, 0, 16)); ...works only for the menu but nothing else (buttons, labels). I tried to change labels and buttons fonts with UIManager.put("Button.font", new Font(Font.SANS_SERIF, 0, 16)); UIManager.put("Label.font", new Font(Font.SANS_SERIF, 0, 16)); but the font remains. The only thing that worked for me was deriving a font: someButton.setFont(someButton.getFont().deriveFont(16f)); But this is not an option, since this must be done for each element manually. Note, that deriving a font for UIManager doesn't work either: UIManager.put("Label.font", UIManager.getFont("Label.font").deriveFont(16f)); I tested everything under Linux and Windows: same behavior. I just can't understand how an API can be so messy. If a method is called setFont(..) then I expect it to set the font. If this method fails to set the font in any thinkable circumstances, then it should be deprecated. EDIT: The problem not only applies to Nimbus, but also to the default LAF.

  • "Link" against a SWC in Flex

    I'm trying to do a very simple app in Flash/Flex, that loads an image embedded in the swf itself and then shows it. The thing is I'm trying to do it using the command line only (mxmlc and compc) and without using @Embed, and failing miserably. I have a very simple Main.as : package { import flash.display.*; import flash.utils.*; public class Main extends Sprite { public function Main () : void { var pDef:Class = getDefinitionByName("icon_big.png") as Class; var _image:BitmapData = new pDef(0, 0); var pSprite:Sprite = new Sprite(); pSprite.graphics.beginBitmapFill(_image); pSprite.graphics.drawRect(0, 0, _image.width, _image.height); pSprite.graphics.endFill(); addChild(pSprite); } } } This works fine if I add icon_big.png to the Library using the Flash IDE, but I can't figure out how to do it from the command line. I'm using compc to put the png inside a swc : compc --include-file icon_big.png icon_big.png -output assets.swc This generates a 17 kb assets.swf, slightly bigger than icon_big.png. Then I try to compile and link Main.as : mxmlc -include-libraries+=assets.swc Main.as This produces a 944 byte Main.swf, which clearly doesn't include the asset, and fails at runtime. According to the mxmlc docs I found, -include-libraries should link with every class, including the ones not directly referenced by code (as is the case here, since I'm getting the class from code), and it unsurprisingly fails at runtime. Note that this same code (or, more precisely, quite equivalent code) works when used within a Flash project - I'm not looking to fix the code, but how to do in the command line whatever Flash does internally. I feel I'm just "not getting" something... any clues?

  • Unable to access Java-created file -- sometimes

    In Java, I'm working with code running under WinXP that creates a file like this: public synchronized void store(Properties props, byte[] data) { try { File file = filenameBasedOnProperties(props); if ( file.exists() ) { return; } File temp = File.createTempFile("tempfile", null); FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(temp); out.write(data); out.flush(); out.close(); file.getParentFile().mkdirs(); temp.renameTo(file); } catch (IOException ex) { // Complain and whine and stuff } } Sometimes, when a file is created this way, it's just about totally inaccessible from outside the code (though the code responsible for opening and reading the file has no problem), even when the application isn't running. When accessed via Windows Explorer, I can't move, rename, delete, or even open the file. Under Cygwin, I get the following when I ls -l the directory: ls: cannot access [big-honkin-filename] total 0 ?????????? ? ? ? ? ? [big-honkin-filename] As implied, the filenames are big, but under the 260-character max for XP (though they are slightly over 200 characters). To further add to the sense the my computer just wants me to feel stupid, sometimes the files created by this code are perfectly normal. The only pattern I've spotted is that once one file in the directory "locks", the rest are screwed. Anybody ever run into something like this before, or have any insights into what's going on here?

  • Casting to a struct from LPVOID - C

    Hello, I am writing a simple console application which will allow me to create a number of threads from a set of parameters passed through the arguments I provide. DWORD WINAPI ThreadFunc(LPVOID threadData) { } I am packing them into a struct and passing them as a parameter into the CreateThread method and trying to unpack them by casting them to the same type as my struct from the LPVOID. I'm not sure how to cast it to the struct after getting it through so I can use it in the method itself, i've tried various combinations (Example attatched) but it won't compile. Struct: #define numThreads 1 struct Data { int threads; int delay; int messages; }; Call to method: HANDLE hThread; DWORD threadId; struct Data *tData; tData->threads = numThreads; tData->messages = 3; tData->delay = 1000; // Create child thread hThread = CreateThread( NULL, // lpThreadAttributes (default) 0, // dwStackSize (default) ThreadFunc, // lpStartAddress &tData, // lpParameter 0, // dwCreationFlags &threadId // lpThreadId (returned by function) ); My attempt: DWORD WINAPI ThreadFunc(LPVOID threadData) { struct Data tData = (struct Data)threadData; int msg; for(msg = 0; msg<5; msg++) { printf("Message %d from child\n", msg); } return 0; } Compiler error: error C2440: 'type cast' : cannot convert from 'LPVOID' to 'Data' As you can see I have implemented a way to loop through a number of messages already, I'm trying to make things slightly more advanced and add some further functionality.
